We evaluated the frequency of different HLA-DRB1 alleles in Plasmodium vivax-infected individuals and in healthy blood donors from malaria endemic areas of Brazil. Low-resolution human leukocyte antigen-DRB1 genotyping was performed for 73 malaria patients and 29 healthy blood donors. The most frequent alleles in individuals from northern Brazil were human leukocyte antigen-DRB1*04, *08, *07 and *13. The frequency of human leukocyte antigen-DRB1*07 was higher in malaria-infected individuals than in the control group, which reinforces the theory that this allele plays an important role in susceptibility to malaria. This study offers new information about a potential susceptibility factor for P. vivax malaria in a Brazilian population that is naturally exposed to malaria.

This paper aims at describeconstruction and installation sequences of a new design of appliance that allows continuously protraction of the mandible, using the telescopic mechanism of the Herbst appliance. This appliance has the advantage to be easily assembled by the orthodontist, without the necessity of molding and the assistance of a specialized laboratory, as well as the constant permanence in the mouth of the patient for being fixed.

Introduction: The orthodontic treatment using lingual brackets has been desired by adult patients for esthetic factors. In this paper it is described the clinical steps of an orthodontic treatment using Incognito™ system, individualized lingual brackets and archwires designed by CAD/CAM technology. Methods: The presented case describes the treatment of a patient with mesofacial growth pattern,Class I malocclusion, with mandibular crowding and diastema between the upper central incisors, treated using 100% individualized lingual brackets. Results: After treatment, the molar relation of Class I was kept, the spaces between upper central incisors were closed and mandibular crowding corrected. Conclusion: This case report demonstrated the efficiency of the new method for lingual orthodontic treatment.

This research evaluated the surgical stabilily in patients with mandibular prognathism and retrognathism in which was used sagital split technic to correct those detormities. Twelve patients were selected from the clinic of only one experienced surgeon. Six patients presenter a Class III 6 a Class II molar relationship. A comparative cefalometric analysis using linear and angular measurements was performed of pre-surgery, imediate pós-surgery and 1 year follow-up. The following conclusions were obtained. 1 The Dal Pont sagital split technic modified by Epker to correct mandibular prognathisn and retroghnatism is a stable technic and must be indicated to correct those deformities. 2 Small relapses are easily corrected by the post-surgical orthodontic treatment. 3 A small over correction is advised in cases of large mandibular advancements or set bascks. 4 In those cases which a large amount of mandibular retrusion on advancement need to be performed, a combination of maxillary and mandibular surgery should be used. Rigid fixation technic is also indicated in those cases

Time series tendencies are an important tool for different sectors such as the scientific community, industries and environmental protection agencies who can evaluate the variability of a specific parameter in time, what is very important piece of information for establishing corrective and preventive actions. This work presents a time series model of main physical, chemical and biological parameters of the Water Quality Index (WQI) determined for different selected points of a hydrographical basin form May/2006 to Aug/2010. The statistical model Arima enabled a better understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes that most clearly influences WQI. The Arima model allowed the assessment of the trend of several parameters used in the calculation of the WQI, showing that dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total nitrogen, and fecal E. coli were highly correlated and are the parameters that caused the index changes over time.
