The air-water interface has traditionally been employed to prepare particle assemblies and films of metals and semiconductors. The interface between water and an organic liquid, however, has not been investigated sufficiently for possible use in preparing nanocrystals and thin films of materials. In this article, we demonstrate the use of the liquid-liquid interface as a medium for preparing ultrathin films of metals, chalcogenides and oxides. The method involves the reaction at the interface between a metal-organic compound in the organic layer and an appropriate reagent for reduction, sulfidation, etc. in the aqueous layer. Some of the materials discussed are nanocrystalline films of gold, CuS, CuSe, CuO, and Cu(OH)(2) formed at the liquid-liquid interface. The results reported in this article should demonstrate the versatility and potential of the liquid-liquid interface for preparing nanomaterials and ultrathin films and encourage further research in this area. Foreign compounds, such as drugs are metabolised in the body in numerous reactions. Metabolic reactions are divided into phase I (functionalisation) and phase II (conjugation) reactions. Uridine diphosphoglucuronosyltransferase enzymes (UGTs) are important catalysts of phase II metabolic system. They catalyse the transfer of glucuronic acid to small lipophilic molecules and convert them to hydrophilic and polar glucuronides that are readily excreted from the body. Liver is the main site of drug metabolism. Many drugs are racemic mixtures of two enantiomers. Glucuronidation of a racemic compound yields a pair of diastereomeric glucuronides. Stereoisomers are interesting substrates in glucuronidation studies since some UGTs display stereoselectivity. Diastereomeric glucuronides of O-desmethyltramadol (M1) and entacapone were selected as model compounds in this work. The investigations of the thesis deal with enzymatic glucuronidation and the development of analytical methods for drug metabolites, particularly diastereomeric glucuronides. The glucuronides were analysed from complex biological matrices, such as urine or from in vitro incubation matrices. Various pretreatment techniques were needed to purify, concentrate and isolate the analytes of interest. Analyses were carried out by liquid chromatography (LC) with ultraviolet (UV) or mass spectrometric (MS) detection or with capillary electromigration techniques. Commercial glucuronide standards were not available for the studies. Enzyme-assisted synthesis with rat liver microsomes was therefore used to produce M1 glucuronides as reference compounds. The glucuronides were isolated by LC/UV and ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)/MS, while tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were employed in structural characterisation. The glucuronides were identified as phenolic O-glucuronides of M1. To identify the active UGT enzymes in (±)-M1 glucuronidation recombinant human UGTs and human tissue microsomes were incubated with (±)-M1. The study revealed that several UGTs can catalyse (±)-M1 glucuronidation. Glucuronidation in human liver microsomes like in rat liver microsomes is stereoselective. The results of the studies showed that UGT2B7, most probably, is the main UGT responsible for (±)-M1 glucuronidation in human liver. Large variation in stereoselectivity of UGTs toward (±)-M1 enantiomers was observed. Formation of M1 glucuronides was monitored with a fast and selective UPLC/MS method. Capillary electromigration techniques are known for their high resolution power. A method that relied on capillary electrophoresis (CE) with UV detection was developed for the separation of tramadol and its free and glucuronidated metabolites. The suitability of the method to identify tramadol metabolites in an authentic urine samples was tested. Unaltered tramadol and four of its main metabolites were detected in the electropherogram. A micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) /UV method was developed for the separation of the glucuronides of entacapone in human urine. The validated method was tested in the analysis of urine samples of patients. The glucuronides of entacapone could be quantified after oral entacapone dosing.

The solvation time correlation function for solvation in liquid water was measured recently. The solvation was found to be very fast, with a time constant equal to 55 fs. In this article we present theoretical studies on solvation dynamics of ionic and dipolar solutes in liquid water, based on the molecular hydrodynamic approach developed earlier. The molecular hydrodynamic theory can successfully predict the ultrafast dynamics of solvation in liquid water as observed from recent experiments. The present study also reveals some interesting aspects of dipolar solvation dynamics, which differs significantly from that of ionic solvation.

In the present investigation, Al 2024-15vol.%Al2O3 particulate (average size, 18 mu m) composites were fabricated using the liquid metallurgy route. The wear and friction characteristics of Al alloy 2024 and Al 2024-15vol.%Al2O3p, composite in the as-extruded and peak-aged conditions were studied using a pin-on-disc machine (with a steel disc as the counterface material). The worn surfaces, subsurfaces and the debris were analysed in a scanning electron microscope. The performance of the composite in the as-extruded condition is slightly inferior to that of the unreinforced alloy. However, in the T6 condition, although the wear rates of two materials are initially comparable, the unreinforced alloy seizes while the composite does not within the tested range employed. In the as-extruded condition, the presence of Al2O3 particles is not particularly beneficial as they fracture and result in extensive localized cracking and removal of material from the surface. In the peak-aged condition, however, while the unreinforced alloy exhibits severe plastic deformation and undergoes seizure, there is no significant change in the mechanism in the case of the composite. Except in the case of the peak-aged unreinforced alloy, worn surfaces of all other materials show the presence of an iron-rich layer.

Chalcopyrite in contact with water is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of oxygen. Oxidation of chalcopyrite may take place due to various factors, e.g., geological environment, mining/comminution, and storage. In this work oxidation of chalcopyrite has been investigated through interfacial electrokinetics. The characteristics of samples obtained from different geological locations as well as the effects of ageing and laboratory oxidation have been delineated. Variation of the solid-liquid ratio was found to have a significant effect on the zeta-potential characteristics of chalcopyrite. The role of constituent metal ions, namely copper and iron, has been studied in the absence and presence of externally added metal ions. The results indicated that the ratio of Cu/Fe on the surface of oxidized chalcopyrite determines the Stern layer potential and under appropriate solution chemistry conditions influences charge reversals. The mineral surfaces, thus, could be either copper-rich or iron-rich as reflected by a shift in pH(iep),,(s). The observed charge reversals have been explained on the basis of a model proposed by James and Healy. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

The coordinating behavior of a new dihydrazone ligand, 2,6-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine towards manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) has been described. The metal complexes were characterized by magnetic moments, conductivity measurements, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Vis, FAB-Mass and EPR) and thermal studies. The ligand crystallizes in triclinic system, space group P-1, with alpha=98.491(10)degrees, beta=110.820(10)degrees and gamma=92.228(10)degrees. The cell dimensions are a=10.196(7)angstrom, b=10.814(7)angstrom, c=10.017(7)angstrom, Z=2 and V=1117.4(12). IR spectral studies reveal the nonadentate behavior of the ligand. All the complexes are neutral in nature and possess six-coordinate geometry around each metal center. The X-band EPR spectra of copper(II) complex at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature showed unresolved broad signals with g(iso) = 2.106. Cyclic voltametric studies of copper(II) complex at different scan rates reveal that all the reaction occurring are irreversible. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, 6061 Al metallic matrix was reinforced by 12.2 wt% df SiC particulates using liquid metallurgy route. The composite material thus obtained was extruded and characterized in the as-solutionized and peak aged conditions in order to delineate the effect of aging associated precipitation of secondary phases on the tensile fracture behavior of the composite samples. The results' of microstructural characterization studies carried out using scanning electron microscope revealed the increased presence of precipitated secondary phases in the metallic matrix and a more pronounced interfacial segregation of alloying elements in case of peak aged samples when compared to the as-solutionized samples. The results of the fractographic studies conducted on the as-solutionized samples revealed that the failure was dominated by the SiC particulates cracking while for the peak aged samples the fracture surface revealed a comparatively more pronounced SiC/6061 Al debonding and reduced SiC particulates cracking. This change in the failure behavior was rationalized in terms of embrittlement of the interfacial region brought about by the aging heat treatment and is correlated, in addition, with the mechanical properties of the composite samples in as-solutionized and peak aged conditions.

We consider the Finkelstein action describing a system of spin-polarized or spinless electrons in 2+2epsilon dimensions, in the presence of disorder as well as the Coulomb interactions. We extend the renormalization-group analysis of our previous work and evaluate the metal-insulator transition of the electron gas to second order in an epsilon expansion. We obtain the complete scaling behavior of physical observables like the conductivity and the specific heat with varying frequency, temperature, and/or electron density. We extend the results for the interacting electron gas in 2+2epsilon dimensions to include the quantum critical behavior of the plateau transitions in the quantum Hall regime. Although these transitions have a very different microscopic origin and are controlled by a topological term in the action (theta term), the quantum critical behavior is in many ways the same in both cases. We show that the two independent critical exponents of the quantum Hall plateau transitions, previously denoted as nu and p, control not only the scaling behavior of the conductances sigma(xx) and sigma(xy) at finite temperatures T, but also the non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the specific heat (c(v)proportional toT(p)). To extract the numerical values of nu and p it is necessary to extend the experiments on transport to include the specific heat of the electron gas.

The spectra of molecules oriented in liquid crystalline media are dominated by partially averaged dipolar couplings. In the 13C–1H HSQC, due to the inefficient hetero-nuclear dipolar decoupling in the indirect dimension, normally carried out by using a π pulse, there is a considerable loss of resolution. Furthermore, in such strongly orienting media the 1H–1H and 13C–1H dipolar couplings leads to fast dephasing of transverse magnetization causing inefficient polarization transfer and hence the loss of sensitivity in the indirect dimension. In this study we have carried out 13C–1H HSQC experiment with efficient polarization transfer from 1H to 13C for molecules aligned in liquid crystalline media. The homonuclear dipolar decoupling using FFLG during the INEPT transfer delays and also during evolution period combined with the π pulse heteronuclear decoupling in the t1 period has been applied. The studies showed a significant reduction in partially averaged dipolar couplings and thereby enhancement in the resolution and sensitivity in the indirect dimension. This has been demonstrated on pyridazine and pyrimidine oriented in the liquid crystal. The two closely resonating carbons in pyrimidine are better resolved in the present study compared to the earlier work [H.S. Vinay Deepak, Anu Joy, N. Suryaprakash, Determination of natural abundance 15N–1H and 13C–1H dipolar couplings of molecules in a strongly orienting media using two-dimensional inverse experiments, Magn. Reson. Microwave-based methods are widely employed to synthesize metal nanoparticles on various substrates. However, the detailed mechanism of formation of such hybrids has not been addressed. In this paper, we describe the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reduction of metal salts by ethylene glycol under microwave heating conditions. On the basis of this analysis, we identify the temperatures above which the reduction of the metal salt is thermodynamically favorable and temperatures above which the rates of homogeneous nucleation of the metal and the heterogeneous nucleation of the metal on supports are favored. We delineate different conditions which favor the heterogeneous nucleation of the metal on the supports over homogeneous nucleation in the solvent medium based on the dielectric loss parameters of the solvent and the support and the metal/solvent and metal/support interfacial energies. Contrary to current understanding, we show that metal particles can be selectively formed on the substrate even under situations where the temperature of the substrate Is lower than that of the surrounding medium. The catalytic activity of the Pt/CeO(2) and Pt/TiO(2) hybrids synthesized by this method for H(2) combustion reaction shows that complete conversion is achieved at temperatures as low as 100 degrees C with Pt-CeO(2) catalyst and at 50 degrees C with Pt-TiO(2) catalyst. Our method thus opens up possibilities for rational synthesis of high-activity supported catalysts using a fast microwave-based reduction method.

A cross-linked polymer ``gel'' electrolyte obtained from free radical polymerization of a vinyl monomer (acrylonitrile; AN) in a room temperature ionic liquid electrolyte (N,N-methyl butyl pyrrolidinium-bis (trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl) imide;LiTFSI-[Py(1,4)-TFSI]) for application in high rate capability rechargeable lithium-ion batteries is discussed here. This is a novel alternative compared to the often employed approach of using a molecular liquid as the medium for performing the polymerization reaction. The polymer ``gel'' electrolytes (AN:Py(1,4)-TFSI = 0.16-0.18, w/w) showed remarkable compliable mechanical strength and higher thermal stability compared to LiTFSI-[Py(1,4)-TFSI]. Despite two orders increase in magnitude of viscosity of polymer ``gels'', the room temperature ionic conductivity of the ``gels'' (1.1 x 10(-3)-1.7 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1)) were nearly identical to that of the ionic liquid (1.8 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1)). The present ``gel'' electrolytes did not exhibit any ageing effects on ionic conductivity similar to the conventional polymer gel electrolytes (e.g. high molecular weight polymer + salt + high dielectric constant molecular solvent). The disorder (ionic liquid) to a relative order (cross-linked polymer electrolyte) transformation does not at all influence the concentration of conducting species. The polymer framework is still able to provide efficient pathways for fast ion transport. Unlike the ionic liquid which is impossible to assemble without a conventional separator in a cell, the polymer ``gel'' electrolyte could be conveniently assembled without a separator in a Li vertical bar lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO(4)) cell. Compared to the ionic liquid, the ``gel'' electrolyte showed exceptional cyclability and rate capability (current density: 35-760 mA g(-1) with LiFePO(4) electronically wired with carbon (amorphous or multiwalled nanotube [MWCNT]).

It is important to know and to quantify the liquid holdups both dynamic and static at local levels as it will lead to understand various blast furnace phenomena properly such as slag/metal.gas.solid reactions, gas flow behaviour and interfacial area between the gas/solid/liquid. In the present study, considering the importance of local liquid holdup and non-availability of holdup data in these systems, an attempt has been made to quantify the local holdups in the dropping and around raceway zones in a cold model study using a non-wetting packing for liquid. In order to quantify the liquid holdups at microscopic level, a previously developed technique, X-ray radiography, has been used. It is observed that the liquid flows in preferred paths or channels which carry droplets/rivulets. It has been found that local holdup in some regions of the packed bed is much higher than average at a particular flow rate and this can have important consequences for the correct modelling of such systems.

An equation has been derived for predicting the activity coefficient of oxygen or sulphur in dilute solution in binary alloys, based on the quasichemical approach, where the metal atoms and the oxygen atoms are assigned different bond numbers. This equation is an advance on Alcock and Richardson's earlier treatment where all the three types of atoms were assigned the same coordination number. However, the activity coefficients predicted by this new equation appear to be very similar to those obtained through Alcock and Richardson's equation for a number of alloy systems, when the coordination number of oxygen in the new model is the same as the average coordination number used in the earlier equation. A second equation based on the formation of “molecular species” of the type XnO and YnO in solution is also derived, where X and Y atoms attached to oxygen are assumed not to make any other bonds. This equation does not fit experimental data in all the systems considered for a fixed value of n. Howover, if the strong oxygen-metal bonds are assumed to distort the electronic configuation around the metal atoms bonded to oxygen and thus reduce the strength of the bonds formed by these atoms with neighbouring metal atoms by approximately a factor of two, the resulting equation is found to predict the activity coefficients of oxygen that are in good agreement with experimental data in a number of binary alloys.

The solubility of oxygen in liquid gallium in the temperature range 775 –1125 °C and in liquid gallium-copper alloys at 1100 °C, in equilibrium with β-Ga2O3, has been measured by an isopiestic equilibrium technique. The solubility of oxygen in pure gallium is given by the equation log (at.% O) = −7380/T + 4.264 (±0.03) Using recently measured values for the standard free energy of formation of β-Ga2O3 and assuming that oxygen obeys Sievert's law up to the saturation limit, the standard free energy of solution of oxygen in liquid gallium may be calculated : View the MathML sourceΔ°298 = −52 680 + 6.53T (±200) cal where the standard state for dissolved oxygen is an infinitely dilute solution in which the activity is equal to atomic per cent. The effect of copper on the activity of oxygen dissolved in liquid gallium is found to be in good agreement with that predicted by a recent quasichemical model in which it was assumed that each oxygen is interstitially coordinated to four metal atoms and that the nearest neighbour metal atoms lose approximately half their metallic cohesive energies.
