Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

The rheological parameters of raisins were obtained after three different drying methods: convective, osmo-convective and solar drying. Compression tests were applied to rehydrated samples by using a Texture Analyzer TAXT2i. A mathematical trick was used to determine the stress and area was calculated along the deformation. A power law model could adequately fit stress-true strain curves and parameters; K (measure of stiffness) and n (solid behavior index) were obtained as a function of water activity between 0.755 to 0.432. Results showed that these parameters were strongly dependent on water activity for all drying methods. The constant K, which indicates the resistance against deformation, increased with decreasing water activity. on the other hand, increasing water activity resulted in higher solid behavior indexes, showing a large deviation from the Hookean behavior.

Laboratory time scale experiments were conducted on soils from the Mendip Hills area, England, with the purpose of evaluating the release of Rn-222 and their parent nuclides U-238 and U-234 to the water phase and to determine the influence of parameters that can affect the geochemical behaviour of these nuclides in natural systems. The specific surface area of the samples ranged from 43.8 to 52.5 cm(2) g(-1), where the particle size for all soil horizons is lognormally distributed, with modal values of the particle radius undersize ranging from 107 up to 203 mu m. The values for the released radon were between 26 and 194 pCi, which allowed to estimate emanation coefficients for these materials between 0.1 and 0.2, within the context of other values reported elsewhere. Soils derived from Carboniferous limestone and characterized by higher pH, exchangeable calcium, and the presence of U, but with a lower U-231/U-238 activity ratio, yielded the highest values for released Rn; however, this trend was not observed for dissolved U and its respective U-234/U-238 activity ratio, when considering the less aggressive etchant. Uranium is mobilized from rock matrix to A and B horizons in the analysed soil profiles, where its enrichment is about 10 times higher in soils derived from Carboniferous limestone. These data also permitted an evaluation of a theoretical model for the generation of Rn in soils and its transfer to water, in order to interpret the radioactivity due to this gas in groundwaters from the Mendip Hills district, England. Pb0.91Ca0.1TiO3 powders (PCT) were prepared by mechanochemical synthesis from high-energy ball milling process. The influence of milling time on the phase formation, crystal structure, specific surface area, density and powder morphology was observed. We adopted the Rietveld refinement technique to investigate the crystal structure of the PCT powders. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that PCT powders milled for 5 h showed a wide distribution of particle agglomerates while milled for 35 h showed a decrease in agglomerates size. Further prolongation of milling time resulted in the agglomerates growth. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The influence of yttrium oxide, Y2O3, on the microstructure development of the SnO(2)center dot Co(3)O(4)center dot Nb2O5 typical varistor system was studied with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The different phases present in the studied samples were characterized through XRD, EDS and selected area diffraction patterns (SAD). Particles of Co2SnO4 were observed with TEM in every sample, whereas clusters of the pyrochlore phase T2Sn2O7 were observed with SEM in samples with 0.05, 0.10 and 0.25 mol% of Y2O3. The higher non-linearity (a = 16) was achieved with the addition of 0.05 mol% of Y2O3. The influence of the secondary phases on the electrical properties is also addressed in this work. THE INFLUENCE OF CHEMICAL PLAQUE CONTROL, using topically applied 0.12% chlorhexidine, on the severity of cyclosporin A (CsA)-induced gingival overgrowth (GO) was evaluated. Forty Holtzman rats were divided into four groups: 1) control; 2) cyclosporin A: a 10mg/kg/day subcutaneous dose of CsA; 3) chlorhexidine: 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) was applied to the buccal surface of the right mandibular molars; and 4) cyclosporin A/chlorhexidine: a combination of the treatment described for cyclosporin A and chlorhexidine groups. The animals were fed a high sucrose diet during the experiment and were sacrificed after 14 and 21 days. The histometric analysis revealed a significant increase in buccal gingival area in the cyclosporin A group compared to other groups (P < 0.01) after 21 days. The epithelium thickness of the buccal gingiva was significantly increased in the cyclosporin A group, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The cyclosporin A/chlorhexidine group exhibited statistically significantly lower gingival overgrowth than the cyclosporin A group. These findings, if replicated in human studies, suggest that topically applied 0.12% chlorhexidine may be a valuable measure in the management of cyclosporin-induced gingival overgrowth.

Organic residues may cause major health and environmental problems. This is the case in our study area, where more than 10 billion L per year of residential and industrial waste are produced. Land application of biosolids can be an economical solution by recycling waste and can provide valuable fertilizer if used correctly. The aim of this work was to study the effect of biosolids on the chemical properties of an Oxisol. The experiment was located at Ilha Solteira northwest of São Paulo State, Brazil. The soil was cropped to Sorghum bicolor. The field experimental design consisted of random blocks with six treatments and four replications of each treatment. Biosolids were surface applied to four treatments at rates of 5, 10, 20, and 40 Mg ha(-1) on a dry matter basis; in addition, a treatment with mineral fertilizer and a control were included. One year after biosolids application, soil samples were taken at 0-10, 10-20, and 20-40 cm. Organic matter content (Walkley-Black) and pH (CaCl2) were routinely determined. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases (Ca, Mg, K), and P were determined by exchange resin extraction. No significant differences in any of the analyzed properties were found below the 20 cm depth. Extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) increased with increasing biosolids rate in the top 20 cm, whereas calcium (Ca) and (Ma) magnesium content were not significantly influenced by biosolids. Soil pH decreased with increasing biosolids application. The sewage sludge application did not influence the sorghum production in the first year of culture, under unfavorable soil moisture conditions, but it influenced the dry matter.

Rheological properties of rehydrated prunes were obtained applying compression-relaxation tests by using a Texture Analyzer TAXT2i. A mathematical development was adopted to determine the stress and area, along the deformation. Experimental data of stress versus time was fitted by using three different rheological models: generalized Maxwell, Normand & Peleg and Maxwell. Results showed that generalized Maxwell model can be used to describe the viscoelastic behavior of the samples. The rheological parameters obtained indicated that prunes exhibited elastic behavior more pronounced at low moisture content and drying air temperature. At high moisture content and temperature the sample became a more viscous and less rigid.

Electrodes of RhxTi(1-x) O-y nominal composition were prepared by thermal decomposition of the chloride or nitrate precursor salts dissolved in strongly acidic medium and applied by brush to both sides of a Tidegrees support. A systematic study of the influence of calcination temperature and time as well as oxygen flux was conducted. The coatings were characterised by SEM, EDAX, XRD, open circuit potential measurements and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Visible-ultraviolet spectrophotometry was employed to identify the chemical form of the precursor in solution while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the decomposition temperature ranges. Optimisation of the coating preparation parameters showed coatings obtained from [Rh(H2O)(6)](NO3)(3) precursor dissolved in HNO3 1:2 (v/v) and fired at 430 degreesC for 2 h in a 5 1 min (-1) oxygen stream-furnished stable electrodes having the highest electrochemically active surface area. Statement of problem. It is not clear how different glass ceramic surface pretreatments influence the bonding capacity of various luting agents to these surfaces.Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) of 3 resin cements to a lithia disilicate-based ceramic submitted to 2 surface conditioning treatments.Material and methods. Eighteen 5 X 6 X 8-mm ceramic (IPS Empress 2) blocks were fabricated according to manufacturer's instructions and duplicated in composite resin (Tetric Ceram). Ceramic blocks were polished and divided into 2 groups (n=9/treatment): no conditioning (no-conditioning/control), or 5% hydrofluoric acid etching for 20 seconds and silanization for 1 minute (HF + SIL). Ceramic blocks were cemented to the composite resin blocks with I self-adhesive universal resin cement (RelyX Unicem) or 1 of 2 resin-based luting agents (Multilink or Panavia F), according to the manufacturer's instructions. The composite resin-ceramic blocks were stored in humidity at 37 degrees C for 7 days and serially sectioned to produce 25 beam specimens per group with a 1.0-mm(2) cross-sectional area. Specimens were thermal cycled (5000 cycles, 5 degrees C-55 degrees C) and tested in tension at 1 mm/min. Microtensile bond strength data (MPa) were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparisons tests (alpha=.05). Fractured specimens were examined with a stereomicroscope (X40) and classified as adhesive, mixed, or cohesive.Results. The surface conditioning factor was significant (HF+SIL > no-conditioning) (P<.0001). Considering the unconditioned groups, the mu TBS of RelyX Unicem was significantly higher (9.6 +/- 1.9) than that of Multilink (6.2 +/- 1.2) and Panavia F (7.4 +/- 1.9). Previous etching and silanization yielded statistically higher mu TBS values for RelyX Unicem (18.8 +/- 3.5) and Multilink (17.4 +/- 3.0) when compared to Panavia F (15.7 +/- 3.8). Spontaneous debonding after thermal cycling was detected when luting agents were applied to untreated ceramic surfaces.Conclusion. Etching and silanization treatments appear to be crucial for resin bonding to a lithia disilicate-based ceramic, regardless of the resin cement used.
