Polyfluorene (PF) is a class of typical blue electroluminescent (EL) material, but it exhibits undesired feature in the green spectral region under operation condition. We investigated the spectral properties of different device structures of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO)-based light-emitting diodes, and found that the interaction between cathode and PFO is the main origination of green emission in EL devices. The general method of inserting a buffer layer between the PFO and cathode can decrease the low energy band emission to purify the color and improve the EL performance of devices.

In this paper, it is reported for the first time that a carbon-supported Au (Au/C) catalyst for the cathodic catalyst in a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) was prepared using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) protection method. The results indicated that for oxygen reduction, the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst prepared with the PVA protection method is much better than that of a Au/C catalyst prepared with the pre-precipitation method. This is due to the small average size and low relative crystallinity of the An particles in the Au/C catalyst prepared by the PVA protection method, compared to that of the Au/C catalyst prepared by the pre-precipitation method, illustrating that the average size and the relative crystallinity of the ALL particles has an effect on the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst for oxygen reduction. In addition, because An has no electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of formic acid, the Au/C catalyst possesses a high formic acid tolerance. After the electrocatalytic activity of the Au/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction is improved, it is suitable to be used as the cathodic catalyst in DFAFC.

Plasticized poly(L-lactide)-silica nanocomposite materials have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel process. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), Tensile testing and scanning electron microscope (SEM). IR measurements show that vibration of C-O-C group is confined by silica network. Also the crystallization of poly (L-lactide) is partly confined by silica network. The presence of even small amount of silica largely improves the tensile strength of the samples, TGA results reveal that the thermal stability of samples is improved with silica loading.

By doping a fluorescent dye in the emissive layer, we realized high efficient red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on a europium complex. The OLEDs realized by this method showed pure red emission at 612 nm with a full width at half maximum Of 3 nm. The Commission International de L'Eclairage Coordination keeps approximately the same as the emission of pure Eu3+. The maximum brightness and EL efficiency reached 2450 cd/m(2) at 20 V and 9.0 cd/A (6.0 lm/w) at a current density of 0.012 mA/cm(2), respectively. At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the current efficiency reached 4.4 cd/A.

N-type organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) employing hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) as active layer and p-type copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as buffer layer are demonstrated. The highest field-effect mobility is 7.6x10(-2) cm(2)/V s. The improved performance was attributed to the decrease of contact resistance due to the introduction of highly conductive F16CuPc/CuPc organic heterojunction. Therefore, current method provides an effective path to improve the performance of OTFTs.

A simple, efficient and quick method has been established for the synthesis of CePO4:Tb nanorods and CePO4:Tb/LaPO4 core/shell nanorods via ultrasound irradiation of inorganic salt aqueous solution under ambient conditions for 2 h. The as-prepared products were characterized by means of powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction ( SAED), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and lifetimes. TEM micrographs show that all of the as-prepared cerium phosphate products have rod-like shape, and have a relatively high degree of crystallinity and uniformity. HRTEM micrographs and SAED results prove that these nanorods are single crystalline in nature. The emission intensity and lifetime of the CePO4:Tb/LaPO4 core/shell nanorods increased significantly with respect to those of CePO4: Tb core nanorods under the same conditions. A substantial reduction in reaction time as well as reaction temperature is observed compared with the hydrothermal process.

Organic thin film transistors based on pentacene are fabricated by the method of full evaporation. The thickness of insulator film can be controlled accurately, which influences the device operation voltage markedly. Compared to the devices with a single-insulator layer, the electric performance of devices by using a double-insulator as the gate dielectric has good improvement. It is found that the gate leakage current can be reduced over one order of magnitude, and the on-state current can be enhanced over one order of magnitude. The devices with double-insulator layer exhibit field-effect mobility as large as 0.14 cm(2)/Vs and near the zero threshold voltage. The results demonstrate that using proper double insulator as the gate dielectrics is an effective method to fabricate OTFTs with high electrical performance.

A suitable method for the pretreutment of dissolved nitrate samples in seawaters for nitrogen isotopic analysis was established. First, the seawater samples were processed by removing nitrite and amonium. Then Devard's alloy was added in sample for conversion of dissolved nitrate to ammonium. The sample was distilled, and then the ammonium condensate was collected with zeolite. after distillation, the collected condensate was filtered and prepared for determining nitropic values. Some tests of the method were conducted. The distillation condition, the influence of salinity on nitrogen isotopic analysis, absorption of ammonium onto zeolite and an improved method on a large volume of seawater were discussed in this study. The results showed that the distillation step had an average recovery of (104.9 +/- 4.2) % (n = 6) when distillating every 300 mL aliquot of the sample under a strong alkaline condition with 0.5 g devard's alloy and a distillation time of 30 min. The nitrogen isotopic fractionation decreased markedly when salinity was increased from 0% to 0.5%; further increase(1% - 3.5%) showed little effect. The adsorption rate of ammonium onto zeolite had a high yield of (95.96 +/- 1.08) % (n = 6) in average. An improved collection method was used to process a large volume of seawater with several distillations, and had good effect on analysis. The method had been applied to analyze water samples collected from Changjiang estuary. The analytical results indicate that the method is suitable for delta N-15 analysis of dissolved nitrate in seawaters. The present method could provide valuable information about the source and cycle mechanism of dissolved nitrogen in estuary waters.

An improved method for the determination of phosphorus in natural waters, aquatic organisms and sediments by ignition method is proposed. The recoveries of phosphorus (P) from selected inorganic and organic P-containing compound standards after ignition with different auxiliaries, such as MgSO4, Mg(NO3)(2), MgO2, Mg(Ac-2) and CaCl2, were compared. We found that the phosphorus from most compound standards could not be completely recovered when these compounds were ignited (450-500degreesC) with the MgSO4 as auxiliary and the baked residue was extracted with 0.2 mol l(-1) HCl for 30min at 80degreesC or at room temperature. P recoveries, for example, were poor, less than 85%, if pyrophosphate and metaphosphate were ignited with the addition Of MgSO4 prior to the extraction of the baked residue with 0.2 mol l(-1) HCl at 80degreesC for 30 min. In contrast, MgO2, Mg(Ac)(2) and CaCl2, as well as Mg(NO3)(2), could all yield complete P recoveries at routine ashing temperatures (450-500degreesC). The results demonstrate that MgC12 is a more effective auxiliary agent for the determination of phosphorus in natural waters, aquatic organisms and sediments by ignition method than MgSO4 which is commonly used. The classical method for preparation of covalently boned cellulose derivative chiral stationary phases (CSP) with diisocyanate as spacer was improved. Diisocyanate was firstly allowed to react with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the resulting product was then applied as the spacer reagent to immobilize cellulose derivatives onto silica gel. Influences of the amount and the length of the spacer on the optical resolution ability of the CSP were investigated. Comparing improved procedure to classical diisocyanate method, the cross-linking between the glucose units of the cellulose derivatives was avoided to the most extent. With the improved procedure, regio-nonselective ways could be adopted to prepare covalently bonded CSP, which showed an advantage for the rapid preparation.

New compensation methods are presented that can greatly reduce the slit errors (i.e. transition location errors) and interval errors induced due to non-idealities in optical incremental encoders (square-wave). An M/T-type, constant sample-time digital tachometer (CSDT) is selected for measuring the velocity of the sensor drives. Using this data, three encoder compensation techniques (two pseudoinverse based methods and an iterative method) are presented that improve velocity measurement accuracy. The methods do not require precise knowledge of shaft velocity. During the initial learning stage of the compensation algorithm (possibly performed in-situ), slit errors/interval errors are calculated through pseudoinversebased solutions of simple approximate linear equations, which can provide fast solutions, or an iterative method that requires very little memory storage. Subsequent operation of the motion system utilizes adjusted slit positions for more accurate velocity calculation. In the theoretical analysis of the compensation of encoder errors, encoder error sources such as random electrical noise and error in estimated reference velocity are considered. Initially, the proposed learning compensation techniques are validated by implementing the algorithms in MATLAB software, showing a 95% to 99% improvement in velocity measurement. However, it is also observed that the efficiency of the algorithm decreases with the higher presence of non-repetitive random noise and/or with the errors in reference velocity calculations. The performance improvement in velocity measurement is also demonstrated experimentally using motor-drive systems, each of which includes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for CSDT counting/timing purposes, and a digital-signal-processor (DSP). Results from open-loop velocity measurement and closed-loop servocontrol applications, on three optical incremental square-wave encoders and two motor drives, are compiled. While implementing these algorithms experimentally on different drives (with and without a flywheel) and on encoders of different resolutions, slit error reductions of 60% to 86% are obtained (typically approximately 80%).

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer and the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease worldwide. HPV vaccines require a multi-dose regimen to provide immunity, contributing to low patient compliance. We addressed this problem by formulating biodegradable poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microparticles and assessing their viability for use in controlled-release vaccines. We hypothesized that we could alter fabrication parameters to produce 1-10 μm microparticles in order to encapsulate ovalbumin (OVA) and HPV virus-like particles (VLPs). Microparticles were fabricated using a double emulsion method and used to elicit an immune response in JAWSII cells. Our results contribute to knowledge of vaccine delivery mechanisms and controlled-release technology, and could contribute to the creation of a viable controlled-release HPV vaccine.

A novel circuit design technique is presented which improves gain-accuracy and linearity in differential amplifiers. The technique employs negative impedance compensation and results demonstrate a significant performance improvement in precision, lowering sensitivity, and wide dynamic range. A theoretical underpinning is given together with the results of a demonstrator differential input/output amplifier with gain of 12 dB. The simulation results show that, with the novel method, both the gain-accuracy and linearity can be improved greatly. Especially, the linearity improvement in IMD can get to more than 23 dB with a required gain.

Purpose: To develop an improved mathematical model for the prediction of dose accuracy of Dosators - based upon the geometry of the machine in conjunction with measured flow properties of the powder. Methods: A mathematical model has been created, based on a analytical method of differential slices - incorporating measured flow properties. The key flow properties of interest in this investigation were: flow function, effective angle of wall friction, wall adhesion, bulk density, stress ratio K and permeability. To simulate the real process and (very importantly) validate the model, a Dosator test-rig has been used to measure the forces acting on the Dosator during the filling stage, the force required to eject the dose and the dose weight. Results: Preliminary results were obtained from the Dosator test-rig. Figure 1 [Omitted] shows the dose weight for different depths to the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and different levels of pre-compaction of the powder bed. A strong influence over dose weight arising from the proximity between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and the conditions of the powder bed has been established. Conclusions: The model will provide a useful tool to predict dosing accuracy and, thus, optimise the future design of Dosator based equipment technology – based on measured bulk properties of the powder to be handled. Another important factor (with a significant influence) on Dosator processes, is the condition of the powder bed and the clearance between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed.
