Health and the Built Environment, Sources of Information

The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) has produced a series of reviews which look at the health impacts of identified subject areas. Four reviews have been produced in the areas of employment, transport, the built environment and education. All reviews may be found at http://www.publichealth.ie/ireland/hiaresources. This resource supplements the ‘Health Impacts of Built Environment’ report. It highlights a number of organisations whose work considers issues relevant to the relationship between health and built environment.

Aplicació de gestió web per a la Fundació CIM

Mantenir la informació ordenada i accessible és essencial per qualsevol empresa avui en dia. Es desenvoluparà una aplicació en base web que serveixi per integrar la informació de l’empresa “Fundació CIM” respecte als clients, factures i ofertes (pressupostos). A més, el software permetrà també la creació i el manteniment de factures i albarans d’una manera ràpida i intuïtiva, millorant així el mètode actual basat en fulls de Microsoft Excel i Microsoft Access. S’establiran diferents rangs de permisos als diferents usuaris segons els seus rols.

Coach basket : aplicación para los entrenadores de baloncesto

Los objetivos principales de esta aplicación para dispositivo móvil son: administrar los datos de un club de baloncesto de manera que podamos reducir la pérdida de información y cumplamos la LOPD; recoger las estadísticas de los jugadores del equipo tanto local como visitante para su posterior explotación; mostrar en un documento Excel o en gráficos las estadísticas recogidas; gestionar la planificación de entrenamientos, y ejercicios y crear ejercicios con imágenes e información de los mismos para nuestros entrenamientos.

X-ray mosaic nanotomography of large microorganisms.

Full-field X-ray microscopy is a valuable tool for 3D observation of biological systems. In the soft X-ray domain organelles can be visualized in individual cells while hard X-ray microscopes excel in imaging of larger complex biological tissue. The field of view of these instruments is typically 10(3) times the spatial resolution. We exploit the assets of the hard X-ray sub-micrometer imaging and extend the standard approach by widening the effective field of view to match the size of the sample. We show that global tomography of biological systems exceeding several times the field of view is feasible also at the nanoscale with moderate radiation dose. We address the performance issues and limitations of the TOMCAT full-field microscope and more generally for Zernike phase contrast imaging. Two biologically relevant systems were investigated. The first being the largest known bacteria (Thiomargarita namibiensis), the second is a small myriapod species (Pauropoda sp.). Both examples illustrate the capacity of the unique, structured condenser based broad-band full-field microscope to access the 3D structural details of biological systems at the nanoscale while avoiding complicated sample preparation, or even keeping the sample environment close to the natural state.

Health Impact of Physical Inactivity (HIPI) Tool

Regular physical activity has substantial health benefits, yet only a minority (approximately 21%) of the population in England achieve the minimum levels as recommended by the four home countries’ Chief Medical Officers, in their Start Active, Stay Active report HIPI has been developed to estimate how many cases of certain diseases could be prevented in each local authority in England, if the population aged 40-79 were to engage in recommended amounts of physical activity. This first release (March 2013) includes the following health impacts: preventable cases of diabetes (only shown for Counties and Unitary Authorities) preventable emergency admissions to hospital with a coronary heart disease preventable new cases of breast and colon cancer total number of preventable deaths (all causes). Users can select geographical areas from a map or list. The data is also provided in a downloadable excel spreadsheet. HIPI uses estimates of local levels of physical activity from the Sport England Active People survey. It models the potential benefit from increased levels of physical activity for each local authority. This is pre-calculated to show the health impacts if 100%, 75%, 50% or 25% of the local population undertake the UK Chief Medical Officers’ recommended levels of physical activity. Other assumptions and sources of data are described in the technical document.

Construcción y explotación de un almacén de datos para el análisis de información inmobiliaria

El objetivo de este Trabajo Final de Carrera (TFC) es consolidar los conocimientos adquiridos a lo largo de nuestros estudios de Ingeniería Técnica en Informática de Sistemas. Es un documento que contiene el enunciado de un problema del mundo real, que se describe, desgrana, analiza, etc, y que al final se detalla la solución técnica final escogida. Este Trabajo Final de Carrera, a partir de ahora TFC, está enmarcado dentro del área de Almacenes de Datos, utilizando el siguiente software: ORACLE EXPRESS v10.2.0.1 y SQL DEVELOPER. La empresa inmobiliaria Un Techo para Todos, tiene un catalogo de inmuebles de España y Andorra. Necesitan un sistema de información que le permita comparar diferentes zonas, tipos de pisos y precios, para intentar ser más eficientes ajustando la oferta y la demanda, y por consiguiente obteniendo mayores beneficios. El principal problema que nos plantean es que aunque disponen de mucha información, esta no la tienen integrada en un sistema informático optimo( lo tienen en unas hojas de Excel), por lo que no pueden sacarle el rendimiento adecuado.

L'objectiu d'aquest projecte és el d'integrar les aplicacions de Microsoft Office (Excel, Word i Access) mitjançant. NET i la creació de documents / plantilles necessàries per tal de crear un entorn que permeti a un professional / empresa gestionar de manera automatitzada les factures que envia als seus clients.

Gestió de compres d'una petita empresa.

L'empresa Llibres i multimèdia, S.L ens ha encarregat una petita aplicació que porti un control dels articles i proveïdors que té actualment. L'objectiu d'aquesta aplicació bàsicament és tenir unes dades mínimes d'aquests ítems per tal d'elaborar un llistat Excel que serveixi de punt de partida per a fer-lo evolucionar segons les circumstàncies de l'empresa en cada moment.

Construcció i explotació d'un magatzem de dades de planificació hidrològica

El projecte que constitueix la base de aquest TFC, consisteix en la construcció d'un magatzem de dades, com a eina de treball, per als tècnics de la Confederació Hidrogràfica Nord-Est (CHNE), que és l'entitat encarregada de la gestió de l'aigua i infraestructures hidràuliques del nord-est de la península ibèrica. Aquest magatzem ha de permetre automatitzar la recollida de la informació provinent de fulls Excel i explotar aquesta informació amb eines de Business Intelligence adients.

Construcció i explotació d'un magatzem de dades d'informació cinematogràfica

En aquest treball es realitzarà l'estudi dels Magatzems de dades amb un cas pràctic en l' àmbit de la industria cinematogràfica concretament estarà centrat en els premis atorgats per a diferents festivals. La informació dels premis s'ha lliurat en format Excel y representa diversos festivals.

Construcción y explotación de un almacén de datos de información cinematográfica

Este proyecto tiene como finalidad el diseño, el desarrollo y la puesta en marcha de un almacén de datos destinado, tanto al almacenamiento de la información que nuestro cliente la Academia de Cine Andorrana dispone de los diferentes premios de los Festivales cinematográficos más importantes, como al análisis y la explotación de los datos. El proyecto parte del conjunto de documentos en formato Microsoft Excel que la Academia de Cine Andorrana utiliza como repositorio de información cinematográfica, los cuales tras un proceso de análisis y diseño darán lugar a modelo conceptual, lógico y físico de un cubo multidimensional de procesamiento Analítico Relacional o ROLAP en esquema de copo de nieve. Así mismo, el proyecto incluye el diseño y desarrollo de los procesos necesarios de extracción, transformación y carga (ETL) de las fuentes operacionales de información, previamente exportadas a formato CSV, sobre la base de datos multidimensional. Por último, el proyecto contempla la construcción de un área de negocio que sirve como base y entorno de trabajo para el desarrollo de los informes de extracción y explotación de los datos requeridos por la Academia de Cine Andorrana.

DESARROLLO DE UNA BASE DE DATOS Y UNA APLICACIÓN WEB DE ACCESO A LA MISMA PARA UN GRUPO DE INVESTIGACIÓN MARINA DE ORGANISMOS DE PROFUNDIDAD (DEEP-SEA)

Este proyecto se fraguó previamente a la elección de un trabajo final de carrera. Para poder entenderlo debo mencionar que trabajo como titulado superior de investigación y laboratorio en el Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM)del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), dentro de un grupo de investigación en oceanografía biológica, concretamente en recursos marinos renovables. En base a mi experiencia con este tipo de entorno de investigación, observe que existían una serie de mejoras de carácter técnico que se podrían introducir, y que ha la larga iban a facilitar mucho más el trabajo científico del grupo.Este grupo durante muchos años se ha dedicado a la obtención de datos de dos especies marinas de interés comercial del mar Mediterráneo que tienen su hábitat en aguas profundas: la gamba rosada (Aristeus antennatus) y la cigala (Nephrops norvegicus). Por ende, de manera colateral, datos de las especies que interaccionan con ellas, y que por este hecho se ven influenciadas al ser pescadas las anteriores. En estos años ha ido en aumento la evidencia de que ecosistemas más someros de nuestros mares tienen una relación mucho mayor de lo que se suponía con los ecosistemas profundos de los mismos. Además estos ecosistemas profundos influyen en los someros, también más de lo que cabía esperar, actuando de refugio de larvas y especies que tienen capacidad de sobrevivir en rangos batimétricos amplios. Si desean tener una visión más profunda al respecto pueden ver algunas de las últimas referencias bibliográficas a las que hago referencia en este párrafo acerca de este hecho, así como del incremento de la importancia de los grupos de investigación en el mundo dedicados a este tipo de investigación. En algunas de estas publicaciones han participado miembros del grupo al cual va dirigido el trabajo que aquí expongo.A medida que crecía el número de miembros del grupo, la importancia del mismo, la mejora tecnológica empleada en los muestreos, las colaboraciones internacionales con otras instituciones y la cantidad de proyectos en el grupo de investigación, crecía a su vez proporcionalmente, la cantidad de datos y la disparidad en formatos y sistemas de almacenaje (Hojas MS Excel o bases de datos MS Access, archivos de texto, etc.). Se ha hecho necesaria entonces la creación de una herramienta que los gestione de una forma común, y una base de datos para el almacenaje de los mismos de una forma coherente y robusta. Así mismo el hecho de tener los datos en una fuente común, posibilitará su distribución a otras bases de datos mundiales sobre la materia con las cuales se colabora, dependientes de organismos tan en la cresta a de la ola, como el Census of marine life (COML), el Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) y el Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (MARUM)de Alemania. Estos a su vez carecen de datos de las zonas geográficas pertenecientes al mar Mediterráneo foco de la investigación del grupo.

CODAPACK3D. A new version of Compositional Data Package

The statistical analysis of compositional data should be treated using logratios of parts,which are difficult to use correctly in standard statistical packages. For this reason afreeware package, named CoDaPack was created. This software implements most of thebasic statistical methods suitable for compositional data.In this paper we describe the new version of the package that now is calledCoDaPack3D. It is developed in Visual Basic for applications (associated with Excel©),Visual Basic and Open GL, and it is oriented towards users with a minimum knowledgeof computers with the aim at being simple and easy to use.This new version includes new graphical output in 2D and 3D. These outputs could bezoomed and, in 3D, rotated. Also a customization menu is included and outputs couldbe saved in jpeg format. Also this new version includes an interactive help and alldialog windows have been improved in order to facilitate its use.To use CoDaPack one has to access Excel© and introduce the data in a standardspreadsheet. These should be organized as a matrix where Excel© rows correspond tothe observations and columns to the parts. The user executes macros that returnnumerical or graphical results. There are two kinds of numerical results: new variablesand descriptive statistics, and both appear on the same sheet. Graphical output appearsin independent windows. In the present version there are 8 menus, with a total of 38submenus which, after some dialogue, directly call the corresponding macro. Thedialogues ask the user to input variables and further parameters needed, as well aswhere to put these results. Metagenomics, paratransgenesis and the Anopheles microbiome: a portrait of the geographical distribution of the anopheline microbiota based on a meta-analysis of reported taxa

Anophelines harbour a diverse microbial consortium that may represent an extended gene pool for the host. The proposed effects of the insect microbiota span physiological, metabolic and immune processes. Here we synthesise how current metagenomic tools combined with classical culture-dependent techniques provide new insights in the elucidation of the role of the Anopheles-associated microbiota. Many proposed malaria control strategies have been based upon the immunomodulating effects that the bacterial components of the microbiota appear to exert and their ability to express anti-Plasmodium peptides. The number of identified bacterial taxa has increased in the current “omics” era and the available data are mostly scattered or in “tables” that are difficult to exploit. Published microbiota reports for multiple anopheline species were compiled in an Excel® spreadsheet. We then filtered the microbiota data using a continent-oriented criterion and generated a visual correlation showing the exclusive and shared bacterial genera among four continents. The data suggested the existence of a core group of bacteria associated in a stable manner with their anopheline hosts. However, the lack of data from Neotropical vectors may reduce the possibility of defining the core microbiota and understanding the mosquito-bacteria interactive consortium.

The Common Strategy on the Mediterranean Region: Evidence and Analysis

The present working paper aims at assessing the Common Strategy on the Mediterranean, taking into account its possible articulation as a coherent instrument of the European Foreign Policy. The study wants to answer some questions related to this instrument. The Common Strategy on the Mediterranean is an excellent case study and is a potential source of several questions about the external action of the European Union. Specifically, the present study has in mind two main questions to answer. Firstly, which are the main reasons behind the adoption of this instrument of the European Foreign Policy? In other words, which was/is the rationale for the existence of this Common Strategy? Secondly, which is the real impact of the Common Strategy? Which are its real achievements?
