In this work, a series of transparent di-ureasil hybrids containing different amounts of methacrylic acid modified zirconium tetrapropoxide (ZrMcOH) nanoclusters (5-85 mol%) and incorporating EuCl3 and [Eu(tta)(3)(H2O)(2)](tta = thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) complex were prepared. These hybrids are multi-wave-length emitters due to the convolution of the host intrinsic emission (electron-hole recombinations occurring in siliceous and urea cross-linkages) Eu3+ intra-4f(6) transitions. The ZrMcOH incorporation deviates the maximum excitation wavelength of the hybrid host intrinsic emission from the UV (365 nm) to the blue (420 nm) and enhances the absolute emission quantum yield from 6.0 +/- 0.6% to 9.0 +/- 0.9%, and contributes to an increase in the D-5(0) lifetime values, quantum efficiency due to a decrease in the non-radiative transition probability and OH groups coordinated to the Eu3+ ions. The understanding of biological membranes may be improved by investigating physical properties of vesicles from natural or synthetic amphiphiles. The application of vesicles as mimetic agents depends on the knowledgment of their structure and properties. Vesicles having different curvature and size may be obtained using different preparation protocols. We have used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and steady-state fluorescence to investigate the gel to liquid-crystal phase transition of vesicles prepared by sonication (SUV) and non-sonication (GUV) of the synthetic dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) in aqueous solution. DSC thermograms for a non-sonicated dispersion show a well-defined pre- and main transition corresponding to two narrow peaks at 36 and 45°C in the first upscan, while in a second upscan, only the main peak was observed. The sharpness of the peaks indicate a cooperative phase behavior for GUV. For a sonicated DODAB dispersion, the first upscan shows a third peak at 40.3°C, whereas for the second upscan the peaks are not well-defined, indicating a less cooperative phase behavior. Alternatively, the fluorescence quantum yield (Φ f) and the anisotropy (r) of trans, trans, trans-1-[4-(3-carboxypropyl)-phenyl]-6-[4-butylphenyl]-1,3,5-hexatriene (4H4A) and the ratio I 1/I 3 of the first to the third vibronic peaks of the pyrene emission spectrum as function of temperature are used as well to describe the phase behavior of DODAB sonicated and non-sonicated dispersions. It is in good agreement with the DSC results that the cooperativity of the thermotropic process is diminished under sonication of the DODAB dispersion, meaning that sonication changes from homogeneous to heterogeneous populations of the amphiphile aggregates. The pre- and main transitions obtained from these techniques are in fairly good accord with results from the literature.

Sol-gel derived hybrids that contain OCH2CH2 (polyethylene glycol, PEG) repeat units grafted onto a siliceous backbone by urea, -NHC(=O)NH-, or urethane, -NHC(=O)O-, bridges have been prepared. It is demonstrated that the white light PL of these materials results from an unusual convolution of a longer lived emission that originates in the NH groups of the urea/urethane bridges with shorter lived electron-hole recombinations occurring in the nanometer-sized siliceous domains. The PL efficiencies reported here (maximum quantum yields at room temperature of ≈ 0.20 ± 0.02 at a 400 nm excitation wavelength) are in the same range as those for tetramethoxysilane-formic acid, and APTES-acetic acid, sol-gel derived phosphors. The high quantum yields combined with the possibility of tuning the emission to colors across the chromaticity diagram present a wide range of potential applications for these hybrid materials.

Coffea arabica is considered to be sensitive to low temperatures, being affected throughout its entire life cycle. Injury caused by chilling (low temperatures above zero degree centigrade) is characterized primarily by inhibition of the photosynthetic process. The objective of this work was to evaluate the role of photosynthetic pigments in the tolerance of coffee (C. arabica L.) seedlings to chilling. The evaluation the photosynthetic activity was made by emission of Chl a fluorescence at room temperature (25°C) in vivo and in situ, using a portable fluorometer. The pigment content was obtained by extraction with 80% acetone, while estimation of membrane lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the MDA content in leaf tissue extracts. The results indicated a generalized reduction in the quantum yield of PSII when the seedlings were maintained in the dark. The reduction occurred in the seedlings submitted to chilling treatment as well as in the control ones. This demonstrates that not only chilling acts to cause an alteration in PSII. It is possible that the tissue storage reserves had been totally exhausted, with the respiratory rate exceeding the photosynthetic rate; the later was nil, since the seedlings were kept in the dark. The efficiency in the capture, transfer and utilization of light energy in PS11 photochemical reactions requires a sequence of photochemical, biochemical and biophysical events which depend on the structural integrity of the photosynthetic apparatus. However, this efficiency was found to be related to the protective action of chloroplastid pigments, rather than to the concentration of these pigments.

Coffea arabica L. is considered to be sensitive to low temperatures throughout its life cycle. In some Brazilian regions, seedling production occurs under shade conditions and during the winter, with average temperatures of around 10 °C. The formation and functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus are strongly controlled by temperature. This study aimed to assess the changes that occurred in pigment contents, lipid peroxidation and variables of chlorophyll a fluorescence during the greening process of coffee seedlings submitted to chilling. Results indicate that saturation of the photosynthetic activity of coffee seedlings occurred before saturation of the accumulation of chloroplastid pigments. Pigment accumulation during the greening process is far beyond the metabolic needs for the maintenance of photosynthetic activity, more specifically of photosystem II. Coffee seedlings attained a quantum yield equivalent to that of the control with approximately half the chlorophyll a and b contents and around 40% of the carotenoid. Low temperature decreases the metabolism of seedlings, consequently reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation. The chilling temperature (10 °C) used inhibited the accumulation of chloroplast pigments, in turn altering the capacity of the photosynthetic tissue of etiolated coffee seedlings to capture and transfer photon energy to the photosystem II reaction centre. These alterations were better demonstrated by O-J-I-P chlorophyll a fluorescence transients, rather than F v/F m and F v/F 0 ratios. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of insoluble, chemically inert and thermally stable compounds La1-xEux(DPP)3 (x = 0.50, 0.20, 0.10, and 0.050; DPP = diphenylphosphinate) was synthesized and characterized by elemental and thermogravimetric analysis, FT Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. Luminescence spectroscopy at both 77 and 298 K showed changes in the intensity of the hypersensitive transition 5D 0 → 7F2 of Eu3+ which are dependent of the excitation wavelength, suggesting that the europium occupies two different sites in the compounds. The large quantum efficiency and quantum yield, as well as the long radiative lifetime of the 5D0 Eu3+ level of the series of compounds, which are desirable qualities for light-conversion molecular devices, are discussed in terms of the interactions and the energy transfer process between the ligands and the metal ion. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Relative to the Er3 +:gold-nanoparticle (Er3 +:Au-NP) axis, the polarization of the gold nanoparticle can be longitudinal (electric dipole parallel to the Er3 +:Au-NP axis) or transverse (electric dipole perpendicular to the Er3 +:Au-NP axis). For longitudinal polarization, the plasmon resonance modes of gold nanoparticles embedded in Er3 +-doped germanium-tellurite glass are activated using laser lines at 808 and 488 nm in resonance with radiative transitions of Er3 + ions. The gold nanoparticles were grown within the host glass by thermal annealing over various lengths of time, achieving diameters lower than 1.6 nm. The resonance wavelengths, determined theoretically and experimentally, are 770 and 800 nm. The absorption wavelength of nanoparticles was determined by using the Frohlich condition. Gold nanoparticles provide tunable emission resulting in a large enhancement for the 2H11/2 → 4I13/2 (emission at 805 nm) and 4S 3/2 → 4I13/2 (emission at 840 nm) electronic transitions of Er3 + ions; this is associated with the quantum yield of the energy transfer process. The excitation pathways, up-conversion and luminescence spectra of Er3 + ions are described through simplified energy level diagrams. We observed that up-conversion is favored by the excited-state absorption due to the presence of the gold nanoparticles coupled with the Er3 + ions within the glass matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
