Recent advances in vacuum sciences and applications are reviewed. Novel optical interferometer cavity devices enable pressure measurements with ppm accuracy. The innovative dynamic vacuum standard allows for pressure measurements with temporal resolution of 2 ms. Vacuum issues in the construction of huge ultra-high vacuum devices worldwide are reviewed. Recent advances in surface science and thin films include new phenomena observed in electron transport near solid surfaces as well as novel results on the properties of carbon nanomaterials. Precise techniques for surface and thin-film characterization have been applied in the conservation technology of cultural heritage objects and recent advances in the characterization of biointerfaces are presented. The combination of various vacuum and atmospheric-pressure techniques enables an insight into the complex phenomena of protein and other biomolecule conformations on solid surfaces. Studying these phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces is regarded as the main issue in the development of alternative techniques for drug delivery, tissue engineering and thus the development of innovative techniques for curing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. A review on recent advances in plasma medicine is presented as well as novel hypotheses on cell apoptosis upon treatment with gaseous plasma. Finally, recent advances in plasma nanoscience are illustrated with several examples and a roadmap for future activities is presented.

A swift chemical route to synthesize Co-doped SnO2 nanopowders is described. Pure and highly stable Sn1-xCoxO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.15) crystalline nanoparticles were synthesized, with mean grain sizes <5 nm and the dopant element homogeneously distributed in the SnO2 matrix. The UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra of the Sn1-xCoxO2-delta samples reveal red shifts, the optical bandgap energies decreasing with increasing Co concentration. The samples' Urbach energies were calculated and correlated with their bandgap energies. The photocatalytic activity of the Sn1-xCoxO2-delta samples was investigated for the 4-hydroxylbenzoic acid (4-HBA) degradation process. A complete photodegradation of a 10 ppm 4-HBA solution was achieved using 0.02% (w/w) of Sn0.95Co0.05O2-delta nanoparticles in 60 min of irradiation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Titanate nanotubes (TNT) with different sodium contents have been synthesised using a hydrothermal approach and a swift and highly controllable post-washing processes. The influence of the sodium/proton replacement on the structural and morphological characteristics of the prepared materials was analysed. Different optical behaviour was observed depending on the Na+/H+ samples’ content. A band gap energy of 3.27±0.03 eV was estimated for the material with higher sodium content while a value of 2.81±0.02 eV was inferred for the most protonated material, which therefore exhibits an absorption edge in the near visible region. The point of zero charge of the materials was determined and the influence of the sodium content on the adsorption of both cationic and anionic organic dyes was studied. The photocatalytic performance of the TNT samples was evaluated in the rhodamine 6G degradation process. Best photodegradation results were obtained when using the most protonated material as catalyst, although this material has shown the lowest R6G adsorption capability.

This article reports on a new and swift hydrothermal chemical route to prepare titanate nanostructures (TNS) avoiding the use of crystalline TiO2 as starting material. The synthesis approach uses a commercial solution of TiCl3 as titanium source to prepare an amorphous precursor, circumventing the use of hazardous chemical compounds. The influence of the reaction temperature and dwell autoclave time on the structure and morphology of the synthesised materials was studied. Homogeneous titanate nanotubes with a high length/diameter aspect ratio were synthesised at 160 degrees C and 24 h. A band gap of 3.06 +/- 0.03 eV was determined for the TNS samples prepared in these experimental conditions. This value is red shifted by 0.14 eV compared to the band gap value usually reported for the TiO2 anatase. Moreover, such samples show better adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance on the dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) photodegradation process than TiO2 nanoparticles. A 98% reduction of the R6G concentration was achieved after 45 min of irradiation of a 10 ppm dye aqueous solution and 1 g L-1 of TNS catalyst.

Um número crescente de casos de angiostrongilíase abdominal tem sido detectado no sul do Brasil. O principal hospedeiro do Angiostrongylus costaricensis na América Central, o rato do algodão (Sigmodon hispidus), não ocorre na América do Sul, exceto no norte do Peru, Colômbia e Venezuela. Foram realizadas capturas na área endêmica do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), visando identificar hospedeiros para obtenção de vermes em laboratório e produção de antígeno. Pela primeira vez no Brasil foi constatada a infecção em roedores: Oryzomys nigripes e Oryzomys ratticeps. O. nigripes é um roedor silvestre de pequeno porte e parece ser o principal hospedeiro definitivo do A. costaricensis na região serrana do RS.

Fez-se o registro, pela primeira vez, do isolamento de Leishmania (V.) lainsoni de um mamífero silvestre, o roedor Agouti paca (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), no Estado do Pará, Brasil. As amostras do parasita foram isoladas da pele, aparentemente íntegra, de 3 espécimes desse roedor, capturados no município de Tucuruí (ilha de Tocantins), em área que seria inundada pela formação do lago da hidrelétrica construída naquele município. Nenhum isolamento foi obtido de vísceras de qualquer dos animais. A identificação das amostras de L. (V.) lainsoni baseou-se na morfologia de amastigotas e promastigotas, no comportamento da infecção em "hamsters", na análise bioquímica de isoenzimas e, ainda, através de testes com anticorpos monoclonais. A natureza inaparente da infecção nos animais faz supor que o mamífero em questão possa representar um hospedeiro definitivo do parasita na região Amazônica.

A 20 de outubro celebra-se o Dia Mundial da Estatística, esta data foi instituída pela Assembleia Geral da ONU e celebrada pela primeira vez em 2010. Com esta iniciativa pretende-se destacar o papel que a Estatística desempenha a nível mundial para o conhecimento e desenvolvimento das nossas sociedades, bem como a importância das instituições nacionais e internacionais que produzem estatísticas oficiais. Este trabalho que apresentamos resulta da reflexão dos alunos do 1º ano do curso de Relações Públicas e Comunicação Empresarial sobre o tema deste ano – Melhores Dados. Melhores Vidas.

RESUMO - Portugal, país de imigração, viu aumentar a população imigrante em 4,56% de 2006 a 2008. Assim, torna-se importante conhecer não só as características socioeconómicas desta população imigrante, mas também quais as suas necessidades em saúde e que utilização fazem dos cuidados de saúde. Este trabalho baseou-se no IV Inquérito Nacional de Saúde realizado em 2005 e 2006 pelo INSA e analisou as populações portuguesa e imigrante nas variáveis de saúde e de utilização dos cuidados. Para a análise do rendimento utilizou-se a Curva de concentração proposta por Wagstaff, Índices de Concentração da Doença, de Utilização e Índice de LeGrand. Os resultados sugeriram melhor estado de saúde da população imigrante relativamente à população portuguesa (estado de saúde auto-reportado, sensação de mal-estar ou adoentado, dias de actividade limitada e dias de acamamento). Nas doenças crónicas (diabetes, asma e dor crónica), a população imigrante apresentou piores resultados na asma. Foram encontrados piores resultados em saúde entre as mulheres nos dois grupos de população, mas também mais frequência de utilização. Os imigrantes revelam também menor acessibilidade a consultas médicas e consumo de medicamentos. A análise do rendimento enquanto factor gerador de desigualdades em saúde permitiu concluir que existem desigualdades na distribuição do rendimento que condicionam tanto a população portuguesa como a população imigrante. Outros estudos poderão ser considerados para análise da saúde da população imigrante, especialmente os que incluam os cidadãos indocumentados, análise das populações por país de nascimento, os anos de permanência em Portugal e as causas de mortalidade. ---------------------------- ABSTRACT - Portugal, a country of immigration, has seen its immigrant population increasing 4.56% from 2006 to 2008. Therefore, it is important to analyse, not only the socioeconomic characteristics of immigrant population, but also their health needs and utilization of health care. This work was based on the IV National Health Survey conducted in 2005 and 2006 by INSA and analyzed the Portuguese and Immigrant populations in the variables of Health and Utilization of Health Services. In order to analyse the income, the Concentration Curve proposed by Wagstaff and the Concentration Index was used. The results suggested a better health in immigrant population compared with Portuguese population (state of self-reported health, feeling sick or ill, days of limited activity and days of lodging). For the variables of chronic diseases (diabetes, asthma and chronic pain), immigrants have shown worse results in asthma. In both groups (Immigrants and Portuguese), women have had more health problems than men. Lower utilization among Immigrants was found in outpatient visits and in prescription drug utilization. In conclusion, it can be stated that the analysis of the income as a generator of health inequalities showed inequalities in the income distribution that affects both Portuguese and immigrants’ health. Other studies may be considered to analyze immigrants’ health especially those that include undocumented immigrants, analysis of populations by country of birth, years of residence in Portugal and the causes of mortality.

Triatoma delpontei Romaña y Abalos, 1947 es una especie de triatomineo silvestre, de marcada ornitofilia, que se asocia preferentemente al psitácido Myiopsitta monachus (Boddaert, 1783) colonizando sus nidos. Especie que se identifica con zonas de forestas subtropicales secas o xerofíticas propias de las provincias biogeográficas continentales chaqueñas, es notificada para Brasil en la microregión de la campaña de Río Grande do Sul (barra de Quaraí, Municipio de Uruguaiana).

The synthesis of nanocomposite materials combining titanate nanofibers (TNF) with nanocrystalline ZnS and Bi2S3 semiconductors is described in this work. The TNF were produced via hydrothermal synthesis and sensitized with the semiconductor nanoparticles, through a single-source precursor decomposition method. ZnS and Bi2S3 nanoparticles were successfully grown onto the TNF's surface and Bi2S3-ZnS/TNF nanocomposite materials with different layouts. The samples' photocatalytic performance was first evaluated through the production of the hydroxyl radical using terephthalic acid as probe molecule. All the tested samples show photocatalytic ability for the production of this oxidizing species. Afterwards, the samples were investigated for the removal of methylene blue. The nanocomposite materials with best adsorption ability were the ZnS/TNF and Bi2S3ZnS/TNF. The dye removal was systematically studied, and the most promising results were obtained considering a sequential combination of an adsorption-photocatalytic degradation process using the Bi2S3ZnS/TNF powder as a highly adsorbent and photocatalyst material. The optimal design of cold-formed steel columns is addressed in this paper, with two objectives: maximize the local-global buckling strength and maximize the distortional buckling strength. The design variables of the problem are the angles of orientation of cross-section wall elements the thickness and width of the steel sheet that forms the cross-section are fixed. The elastic local, distortional and global buckling loads are determined using Finite Strip Method (CUFSM) and the strength of cold-formed steel columns (with given length) is calculated using the Direct Strength Method (DSM). The bi-objective optimization problem is solved using the Direct MultiSearch (DMS) method, which does not use any derivatives of the objective functions. Trade-off Pareto optimal fronts are obtained separately for symmetric and anti-symmetric cross-section shapes. The results are analyzed and further discussed, and some interesting conclusions about the individual strengths (local-global and distortional) are found.

A infecção experimental pelo Trypanosoma cruzi foi estudada em nove caprinos jovens. Os animais foram inoculados via intraperitoneal com 10³ tripomastigotas sangüíneos/Kg de peso com as cepas 147 (Grupo 1) e 229 (Grupo 2), isoladas de pacientes chagásicos crônicos de Bambuí, MG. Realizaram-se exames de sangue a fresco, xenodiagnóstico, hemocultura e sorologia (RIFI e ELISA). O período de acompanhamento da infecção variou de 7 a 30 meses. Pôde-se observar uma acentuada diferença no curso da infecção entre os dois grupos. Demonstrou-se pela primeira vez em caprinos experimentalmente inoculados com T. cruzi, o parasita através de exames de sangue a fresco e xenodiagnóstico no período agudo e pela hemocultura e xenodiagnóstico no período crônico da infecção chagásica. Os resultados sugerem que caprinos, em determinadas condições epidemiológicas, podem ser importantes no ciclo de transmissão silvestre e peridoméstico do T. cruzi, especialmente aqueles animais mais jovens.
