Marine invertebrates with open circulatory system establish low and constant oxygen partial pressure (Po2) around their tissues. We hypothesized that as a first step towards maintenance of low haemolymph and tissue oxygenation, the Po2 in molluscan mantle cavity water should be lowered against normoxic (21 kPa) seawater Po2, but balanced high enough to meet the energetic requirements in a given species. We recorded Po2 in mantle cavity water of five molluscan species with different lifestyles, two pectinids (Aequipecten opercularis, Pecten maximus), two mud clams (Arctica islandica, Mya arenaria), and a limpet (Patella vulgata). All species maintain mantle cavity water oxygenation below normoxic Po2. Average mantle cavity water Po2 correlates positively with standard metabolic rate (SMR): highest in scallops and lowest in mud clams. Scallops show typical Po2 frequency distribution, with peaks between 3 and 10 kPa, whereas mud clams and limpets maintain mantle water Po2 mostly <5 kPa. Only A. islandica and P. vulgata display distinguishable temporal patterns in Po2 time series. Adjustment of mantle cavity Po2 to lower than ambient levels through controlled pumping prevents high oxygen gradients between bivalve tissues and surrounding fluid, limiting oxygen flux across the body surface. The patterns of Po2 in mantle cavity water correspond to molluscan ecotypes.

Results of heat-flow measurements in the western Black Sea and within the African-Sicilian region of the Mediterranean Sea are presented. New data reveal a well-defined correlation with the deep-seated geologic structure of the regions examined. A heat-flow anomaly within the Pantelleria graben, in the authors' opinion, is a consequence of connective heat transfer along channels of disjunctive faults.

New results of geothermal studies at 18°N in the Red Sea rift zone are discussed. It was established that the thermal field of the African plate in this area has a higher than ordinary level, and averages 3.0-3.5 UTF. Heat flow of the Arabian plate is characterized by negative anomalies and is local in character in comparison to adjoining areas of the rift.

A semiconductor based scheme has been proposed for generating entangled photon pairs from the radiative decay of an electrically pumped biexciton in a quantum dot. Symmetric dots produce polarization entanglement, but experimentally realized asymmetric dots produce photons entangled in both polarization and frequency. In this work, we investigate the possibility of erasing the “which-path” information contained in the frequencies of the photons produced by asymmetric quantum dots to recover polarization-entangled photons. We consider a biexciton with nondegenerate intermediate excitonic states in a leaky optical cavity with pairs of degenerate cavity modes close to the nondegenerate exciton transition frequencies. An open quantum system approach is used to compute the polarization entanglement of the two-photon state after it escapes from the cavity, measured by the visibility of two-photon interference fringes. We explicitly relate the two-photon visibility to the degree of the Bell-inequality violation, deriving a threshold at which Bell-inequality violations will be observed. Our results show that an ideal cavity will produce maximally polarization-entangled photon pairs, and even a nonideal cavity will produce partially entangled photon pairs capable of violating a Bell-inequality.

Clinical evaluation of arterial potency in acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is unreliable. We sought to identify infarction and predict infarct-related artery potency measured by the Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) score with qualitative and quantitative intravenous myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE). Thirty-four patients with suspected STEMI underwent MCE before emergency angiography and planned angioplasty. MCE was performed with harmonic imaging and variable triggering intervals during intravenous administration of Optison. Myocardial perfusion was quantified offline, fitting an exponential function to contrast intensity at various pulsing intervals. Plateau myocardial contrast intensity (A), rate of rise (beta), and myocardial flow (Q = A x beta) were assessed in 6 segments. Qualitative assessment of perfusion defects was sensitive for the diagnosis of infarction (sensitivity 93%) and did not differ between anterior and inferior infarctions. However, qualitative assessment had only moderate specificity (50%), and perfusion defects were unrelated to TIMI flow. In patients with STEMI, quantitatively derived myocardial blood flow Q (A x beta) was significantly lower in territories subtended by an artery with impaired (TIMI 0 to 2) flow than those territories supplied by a reperfused artery with TIMI 3 flow (10.2 +/- 9.1 vs 44.3 +/- 50.4, p = 0.03). Quantitative flow was also lower in segments with impaired flow in the subtending artery compared with normal patients with TIMI 3 flow (42.8 +/- 36.6, p = 0.006) and all segments with TIMI 3 flow (35.3 +/- 32.9, p = 0.018). The aim of the present study was to compare the protein-free diet, guanidinated casein (GuC) and enzyme hydrolysed casein (EHC) methods for the quantification of endogenous amino acid (AA) flow in the avian ileum. Growing broiler chickens (5 weeks old) were used. All three assay diets were based on dextrose, and in the GuC and EHC diets GuC or EHC were the sole source of N. Endogenous AA flows determined with the use of protein-free diet were considerably lower (P < 0.05) than those determined by the GuC and EHC methods. The, total endogenous AA flows determined by the GuC and EHC methods were almost 3-fold greater (P < 0.05) than those determined by the protein-free diet. The endogenous AA values obtained from GuC and EHC methods were similar (P >0.05), except for the flow of arginine, which was lower (P < 0.05) in the EHC method. Glutamic acid, aspartic acid, threonine and glycine were the predominant endogenous AA present in digesta from the distal ileum. The contents of methionine, histidine and cystine were lower compared with other AA. The method of determination had no effect on the AA composition of endogenous protein, except for threonine, glutamic acid, lysine, arginine and cystine. The concentrations of threonine and arginine were lower (P < 0.05) and that of lysine was higher (P < 0.05) with the EHC method compared with the other two methods. The concentration of glutamic acid was greater (P < 0.05) and that of cystine was lower (P < 0.05) in the EHC and GuC methods compared with the protein-free diet method. The results showed that the ileal endogenous flows of N and AA are markedly enhanced by the presence of protein and peptides, above those determined following feeding of a protein-free diet. It is concluded that the use of EHC and GuC methods enables the measurement of ileal endogenous losses in chickens under normal physiological conditions.
