Effective dielectric responses of graded cylindrical composites are investigated when an external uniform field is applied to the composites. Considering linear random composites of cylindrical particles with a specific dielectric function, which varies along the radial direction of the particles, we have studied three cases of dielectric profiles: exponential function, linear and power-law profiles. For each case, the effective dielectric response of graded composites is given on the basis of exact solutions of the local potentials of composites in the dilute limit. For a larger volume fraction, we have proposed an effective medium approximation to estimate the effective dielectric response.

The effective property has been investigated theoretically in graded elliptical cylindrical composite's consisting of inhomogeneous graded elliptical cylinders and an isotropic matrix under external uniform electric field. As a theoretical model, the dielectric gradient profile in the elliptical cylinder is modeled by a power-law function of short semi-axis variable parameter (xi(2) - 1) in the elliptical cylindrical coordinates, namely epsilon(i)(xi) = c(k) (xi(2) - 1)(k), where c(k) and k are the parameters, and xi is the long semi-axis space variable in an elliptical cylindrical inclusion region. In the dilute limit, the local analytical potentials in inclusion and matrix regions are derived exactly by means of the hyper-geometric function, and the formulas are given for estimating the effective dielectric responses under the external lfield along (x) over cap- and (y) over cap -directions, respectively. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that our effective response formulas can be reduced to the well-known results of homogeneous isotropic elliptical cylindrical composites if we take the limit k -> 0 in graded elliptical cylindrical composites. Under an external alternating current (ac) field, the effective ac dielectric response of graded composites consisting of the graded cylindrical inclusion having complex permittivity profiles has been investigated theoretically. A model that the dielectric function is assumed to be a constant while the conductivity has a power-law dependence on the radial variable r, namely epsilon(i)(r) = A + cr(k)/i omega. is studied and the local analytical potentials of the inclusion and the host regions are derived in terms of hyper-geometric function. In the dilute limit, the effective ac dielectric response is predicted. Meanwhile, we have given the exact proof of the differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) method, which is suitable to arbitrary graded profiles. Furthermore, we have given the analytical potentials and the effective ac dielectric responses of coated graded cylindrical composites for two cases, case (a) graded core and case (b) graded coated layer, having the graded dielectric profiles, respectively. The liquid metal flow in induction crucible models is known to be unstable, turbulent and difficult to predict in the regime of medium frequencies when the electromagnetic skin-layer is of considerable extent. We present long term turbulent flow measurements by a permanent magnet incorporated potential difference velocity probe in a cylindrical container filled with eutectic melt In-Ga-Sn. The parallel numerical simulation of the long time scale development of the turbulent average flow is presented. The numerical flow model uses an implicit pseudo-spectral code and k-w turbulence model, which was recently developed for the transitional flow modelling. The results compare reasonably to the experiment and demonstrate the time development of the turbulent flow field and the turbulence energy.

We present here evidence for the observation of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) sausage modes in magnetic pores in the solar photosphere. Further evidence for the omnipresent nature of acoustic global modes is also found. The empirical decomposition method of wave analysis is used to identify the oscillations detected through a 4170 Å "blue continuum" filter observed with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument. Out of phase, periodic behavior in pore size and intensity is used as an indicator of the presence of magnetoacoustic sausage oscillations. Multiple signatures of the magnetoacoustic sausage mode are found in a number of pores. The periods range from as short as 30 s up to 450 s. A number of the magnetoacoustic sausage mode oscillations found have periods of 3 and 5 minutes, similar to the acoustic global modes of the solar interior. It is proposed that these global oscillations could be the driver of the sausage-type magnetoacoustic MHD wave modes in pores.

We have tested soft X-ray lasing in neon-like germanium with cylindrical targets where wave guiding and plasma confinement may affect lasing. An intense soft X-ray laser beam of 0.05 MW peak power and a narrow beam divergence (8 mrad) was produced at 23.6 nm with a 4 cm long straight cylindrical target of 0.72 mm inner diameter. Bending the cylindrical target to form a toroidal shape increased the lasing intensity by a factor of 3 accompanied with reduction of the beam divergence from 8 to 6 mrad.

Film cooling is extensively used to provide protection against the severe thermal environment in gas turbine engines. Most of the computational studies on film cooling flow have been done using steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes calculation procedures. However, the flowfield associated with a jet in a crossflow is highly unsteady and complex with different types of vortical structures. In this paper, a computational investigation about the unsteady phenomena of a jet in a crossflow is performed using detached eddy simulation. Detailed computation of a single row of 35 deg round holes on a flat plate has been obtained for a 1.0 blowing ratio and a 2.0 density ratio. First, time-step size, grid resolution, and computational domain tests for an unsteady simulation have been conducted. Comparison between the results of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes calculation, detached eddy simulation, and large eddy simulation is also performed. Comparison of the time-averaged detached eddy simulation prediction with the measured film-cooling effectiveness shows that the detached eddy simulation prediction is reasonable. From present detached eddy simulations, the influential coherent vortical structures of a film cooling flow can be seen. The unsteady physics of jet in a crossflow interactions and a jet liftoff in film cooling flows have been explained.
