In marine environments, sediments from different sources are stirred and dispersed, generating beds that are composed of mixed and layered sediments of differing grain sizes. Traditional engineering formulations used to predict erosion thresholds are however, generally for unimodal sediment distributions, and so may be inadequate for commonly occurring coastal sediments. We tested the transport behavior of deposited and mixed sediment beds consisting of a simplified two-grain fraction (silt (D50 = 55 µm) and sand (D50 = 300 µm)) in a laboratory-based annular flume with the objective of investigating the parameters controlling the stability of a sediment bed. To mimic recent deposition of particles following large storm events and the longer-term result of the incorporation of fines in coarse sediment, we designed two suites of experiments: (1) "the layering experiment": in which a sandy bed was covered by a thin layer of silt of varying thickness (0.2 - 3 mm; 0.5 - 3.7 wt %, dry weight in a layer 10 cm deep); and (2) "the mixing experiment" where the bed was composed of sand homogeneously mixed with small amounts of silt (0.07 - 0.7 wt %, dry weight). To initiate erosion and to detect a possible stabilizing effect in both settings, we increased the flow speeds in increments up to 0.30 m/s. Results showed that the sediment bed (or the underlying sand bed in the case of the layering experiment) stabilized with increasing silt composition. The increasing sediment stability was defined by a shift of the initial threshold conditions towards higher flow speeds, combined with, in the case of the mixed bed, decreasing erosion rates. Our results show that even extremely low concentrations of silt play a stabilizing role (1.4% silt (wt %) on a layered sediment bed of 10 cm thickness). In the case of a mixed sediment bed, 0.18% silt (wt %, in a sample of 10 cm depth) stabilized the bed. Both cases show that the depositional history of the sediment fractions can change the erosion characteristics of the seabed. These observations are summarized in a conceptual model that suggests that, in addition to the effect on surface roughness, silt stabilizes the sand bed by pore-space plugging and reducing the inflow in the bed, and hence increases the bed stability. Measurements of hydraulic conductivity on similar bed assemblages qualitatively supported this conclusion by showing that silt could decrease the permeability by up to 22% in the case of a layered bed and by up to 70% in the case of a mixed bed.

Chalcogenide suspended core fibers are a valuable solution to obtain supercontinuum generation of light in the mid-infrared, thanks to glass high transparency, high index contrast, small core diameter and widely-tunable dispersion. In this work the dispersion and nonlinear properties of several chalcogenide suspended core mi-crostructured fibers are numerically evaluated, and the effects of all the structural parameters are investigated. Optimization of the design is carried out to provide a fiber suitable for wide-band supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared.

A 2 × 2 factorial combination of thinned or unthinned, and pruned or unpruned 11-year-old Eucalyptus dunnii (DWG) and 12-year-old Corymbia citriodora subsp. variegata (CCV) was destructively sampled to provide 60 trees in total per species. Two 1.4 m long billets were cut from each tree and were rotary veneered in a spindleless lathe down to a 45 mm diameter core to expose knots which were classified as either alive, partially occluded or fully occluded. Non-destructive evaluation of a wider range of thinning treatments available in these trials was undertaken with Pilodyn and Fakopp tools. Disc samples were also taken for basic density and modulus of elasticity. Differences between treatments for all wood property assessments were generally small and not significantly different.Thinning and pruning had little effect on the stem diameter growth required to achieve occlusion, therefore occlusion would be more rapid after thinning due to more rapid stem diameter growth. The difference between the treatments of greatest management interest, thinned and pruned (T&P) and unthinned and unpruned (UT&UP) were small. The production of higher value clear wood produced after all knots had occluded, measured as the average stem diameter growth over occlusion of the three outermost knots, was approximately 2 centimetres diameter. Two of the treatments can be ruled out as viable management alternatives: (i) the effect of thinning without pruning (T&UP) is clear, leading to a large inner core of stem wood containing knots (large knotty core diameter) and (ii) pruning without thinning (UT&P) results in a small knotty core diameter, however the tree and therefore log diameters are also small.

Graded-index (GRIN) fiber lens arrays are fabricated from commercial GRIN fibers to collimate a high-power laser diode array. The beam divergence angles are reduced to 4.2 and 14.7 mrad in the fast and slow axes, respectively. The influences of smile and fluctuation in fiber length are discussed. Using an aspherical focal lens system, about 74% power can be launched into a fiber with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.22 and a core diameter of 400 mu m. In this paper, 4-ferrocene thiophenol was employed as a novel capping agent to synthesize electroactive gold nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy showed an average core diameter of 2.5 nm. The optical and electrochemical properties of the 4-ferrocene thiophenol capped gold nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammograms. Surface plasmon absorbance was detected at 522 nm. Cyclic voltammograms revealed the adsorbed layer reaction controlled electrode process, and the formal potential of electroactive ferrocene centers shifted anodically compared with ferrocene in solution, which could be attributed to the electron-withdrawing phenyl moiety linked to ferrocene.

In this article, we employed triphenylmethanethiol (TPMT) as a novel rigid agent for capping gold nanoparticles and the TPMT monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles were characterized by various analytical techniques. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed a narrow dispersed gold core with an average core diameter of ca. 3.6 nm. The UV/vis spectrum revealed the surface plasmon absorbance at 528 nm. The p-pi conjugated structure of the TPMT ligand was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the rigid nature of the TPMT chains.

Numerous reports have focused on ferrocene-terminated electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a flat An surface but only a few on ferrocene SAMs on An colloid. In this paper, we employ 4-ferrocene thiophenol as a novel capping agent to produce electroactive gold nanoparticles in consideration of the peculiar pi-conjugated structure. Transmission electron microscopy shows the narrow-dispersed gold core with an average core diameter of ca. 2.5 nm. UV/vis spectra examine the pi-conjugated structure of 4-ferrocene thiophenol and surface plasmon absorbance of the indicated gold nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals electronic properties of the An core and thiol ligands. Electrochemical measurement shows that the oxidation peak current is proportional to the scan rate, indicating the electrode process is controlled by adsorbed layer reaction. The formal potential of the Fc-MPCs is compared with that of free ferrocene in MeCN solution and the Fc-SAMs. The shifts are attributed to the phenyl moiety in the 4-ferrocene thiophenol and dielectric constant of the solvation environment.

The formation of chemically etched fibre tips for use in optical scanning probe microscopy is addressed. For tips formed at a cleaved fibre end in the bulk of a buffered HF acid solution the morphological features (tip height, cone angle) are found to depend strongly on the temperature and etchant composition. The tip formation process is analysed and explained in terms of a simple model in which the only pertinent physical parameters are the fibre core diameter and etch rates of the fibre core and cladding. The etch rates are determined in separate experiments as a function of temperature (in the range 24-50 degreesC) for etchant solutions of de ionised water: 50% HF acid: 40% NH4F in the volume ratio 1 : 1 : X for X=2, 4 and 6, and used in the model to yield a correct description of the experimental tip cone angles. The model is successfully extended to the intriguing case of negative tip formation which initiates in a normal, positive tip structure. By contrast, tip formation in the meniscus region of a bare fibre/etchant/organic solvent system is found to be independent of etchant composition and temperature. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. We demonstrate experimentally that the relativistic electron flow in a dense plasma can be efficiently confined and guided in targets exhibiting a high-resistivity-core-low-resistivity-cladding structure analogous to optical waveguides. The relativistic electron beam is shown to be confined to an area of the order of the core diameter (50 mu m), which has the potential to substantially enhance the coupling efficiency of electrons to the compressed fusion fuel in the Fast Ignitor fusion in full-scale fusion experiments.

Arrays of vertically aligned gold nanotubes are fabricated over several square centimetres which display a geometry tunable plasmonic extinction peak at visible wavelengths and at normal incidence. The fabrication method gives control over nanotube dimensions with inner core diameters of 15–30 nm, wall thicknesses of 5–15 nm and nanotube lengths of up to 300 nm. It is possible to tune the position of the extinction peak through the wavelength range 600–900 nm by varying the inner core diameter and wall thickness. The experimental data are in agreement with numerical modelling of the optical properties which further reveal highly localized and enhanced electric fields around the nanotubes. The tunable nature of the optical response exhibited by such structures could be important for various label-free sensing applications based on both refractive index sensing and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
