Silver-assisted laser desorption ionization for high spatial resolution imaging mass spectrometry of olefins from thin tissue sections.

Silver has been demonstrated to be a powerful cationization agent in mass spectrometry (MS) for various olefinic species such as cholesterol and fatty acids. This work explores the utility of metallic silver sputtering on tissue sections for high resolution imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) of olefins by laser desorption ionization (LDI). For this purpose, sputtered silver coating thickness was optimized on an assorted selection of mouse and rat tissues including brain, kidney, liver, and testis. For mouse brain tissue section, the thickness was adjusted to 23 ± 2 nm of silver to prevent ion suppression effects associated with a higher cholesterol and lipid content. On all other tissues, a thickness of at 16 ± 2 nm provided the best desorption/ionization efficiency. Characterization of the species by MS/MS showed a wide variety of olefinic compounds allowing the IMS of different lipid classes including cholesterol, arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and triacylglyceride 52:3. A range of spatial resolutions for IMS were investigated from 150 μm down to the high resolution cellular range at 5 μm. The applicability of direct on-tissue silver sputtering to LDI-IMS of cholesterol and other olefinic compounds presents a novel approach to improve the amount of information that can be obtained from tissue sections. This IMS strategy is thus of interest for providing new biological insights on the role of cholesterol and other olefins in physiological pathways or disease.

Femmes dans le journalisme sportif en Suisse. Comment s'ajuster aux passions masculines ?

Cet article présente les résultats d'une enquête socio-ethnographique (entretiens et observations) au sein de la presse quotidienne sportive romande. Il révèle deux registres vocationnels au sein des journalistes de sport, dans un contexte de féminisation de ce groupe professionnel: là où les hommes évoquent une vocation pour le journalisme sportif, déclinée sur le mode de la passion sportive, les femmes revendiquent plus volontiers un amour de l'écriture et du journalisme. Liés à des modalités d'accès à la profession, des ressources et des socialisations professionnelles bien différenciés, ils induisent d'une part des modes d'investissement de la profession différents et d'autre part expliquent en grande part les ségrégations horizontales et verticales auxquelles les femmes journalistes doivent faire face.

A comment on the cost of capital for investments with non-homogeneous components

In this paper, the expression for the cost of capital is derived when net and replacement investments exhibit differences in their effective prices due to a different fiscal treatment. It is shown that, contrary to previous results in the literature, the cost of capital should be constructed under an opportunity cost criterion rather than a historical one. This result has some important economic consequences, since the optimizing firm will take into account not only the effective price for the new investments but also consider the opportunity cost of replacing them.

Comment on the plasmon model for image-potential-induced surface states

Calculations of the binding energy of bound positron states in metal surfaces, with explicit inclusion of plasmon dispersion and single-particle effects, are presented. The binding energy is greatly reduced with respect to the undispersed case.

Comment on "Kinetics of spinodal decomposition in the ising model with vacancy diffusion"

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 50, 3477 (1994)], P. Fratzl and O. Penrose present the results of the Monte Carlo simulation of the spinodal decomposition problem (phase separation) using the vacancy dynamics mechanism. They observe that the t1/3 growth regime is reached faster than when using the standard Kawasaki dynamics. In this Comment we provide a simple explanation for the phenomenon based on the role of interface diffusion, which they claim is irrelevant for the observed behavior.

Thérapie par cryoablation percutanée ciblée : comment dois-je faire?

Objectifs: Etudier et décrire étape par étape les aspects techniques de la thérapie par cryoablation percutanée ciblée (CPC). Matériels et méthodes: CPC est réalisée par un : adiologue interventionnel sous guidage échographique et/ou tomodensitométrique. Résultats: CPC est un traitement peu invasif qui utilise un froid extrême pour geler et détruire des tumeurs localisées dans le foie, les reins, la prostate, les poumons, les os, les seins et la peau. L'imagerie est utilisée pour guider le placement d'un ou plusieurs applicateurs à travers la peau jusqu'au site cible et surveiller le processus de congélation. De l'azote liquide ou du gaz d'argon circule au sein d'une aiguille-applicateur (CryoPhobe) créant froid intense au contact de la cible. Une sonde indépendante surveille la température du tissu environnant. Le froid est maintenu pendant au moins 20 minutes suivi d'un dégel actif de la "boule de glace". La procédure est ensuite répétée pour maximiser la destruction tumorale. La procédure dure environ 1 heure et se fait de manière ambulatoire. Conclusion: CPC est un traitement alternatif efficace du cancer chez des patients sélectionnés. Les propriétés destructrices des tissus tumoraux sont bien établies pour le cancer du rein, cependant des investigations supplémentaires sont nécessaires pour déterminer l'efficacité de CPC à long terme dans d'autres indications.

Comment on "Reappraisal of experimental values of third-order elastic constants of some cubic semiconductors and metals"

In a recent paper A. S. Johal and D. J. Dunstan [Phys. Rev. B 73, 024106 (2006)] have applied multivariate linear regression analysis to the published data of the change in ultrasonic velocity with applied stress. The aim is to obtain the best estimates for the third-order elastic constants in cubic materials. From such an analysis they conclude that uniaxial stress data on metals turns out to be nearly useless by itself. The purpose of this comment is to point out that by a proper analysis of uniaxial stress data it is possible to obtain reliable values of third-order elastic constants in cubic metals and alloys. Cu-based shape memory alloys are used as an illustrative example.

Temporary Traffic Control and Enforcement of Traffic Laws in Closed Road Sections, June 2007

Public travel by motor vehicles is often necessary in road and street sections that have been officially closed for construction, repair, and/or other reasons. This authorization is permitted in order to provide access to homes and businesses located beyond the point of closure. The MUTCD does address appropriate use of specific regulatory signs at the entrance to closed sections; however, direct guidance for temporary traffic control measures within these areas is not included but may be needed. Interpretation and enforcement of common practices may vary among transportation agencies. For example, some law enforcement officers in Iowa have indicated a concern regarding enforcement and jurisdiction of traffic laws in these areas because the Code of Iowa only appears to address violations on roadways open to “public travel.” Enforcement of traffic laws in closed road sections is desirable to maintain safety for workers and for specifically authorized road users. In addition, occasional unauthorized entry by motor vehicles is experienced in closed road areas causing property damage. Citations beyond simple trespass may be advisable to provide better security for construction sites, reduce economic losses from damage to completed work, and create safer work zones.
