Ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) during melt processing by free radical grafting with peroxide initiation in the presence and absence of a reactive comonomer trimethylolpropane triacrylate (Tris). Increasing the peroxide concentration resulted in an increase in the GMA grafting yield, albeit the overall grafting level was low and was accompanied by higher degree of crosslinking of EPDM which was found to be the major competing reaction. The presence of Tris in the grafting system gave rise to higher grafting yield produced at a much lower peroxide concentration though the crosslinking reactions remained high but without the formation of GMA-homopolymer in either of the two systems. The use of these functionalized EPDM (f-EPDM) samples with PET as compatibilisers in binary and ternary blends of PET/EPDM/f-EPDM was evaluated. The influence of the different functionalisation routes of the rubber phase (in presence and absence of Tris) and the effect of the level of functionality and microstructure of the resultant f-EPDM on the extent of the interfacial reaction, morphology and mechanical properties was also investigated. It is suggested that the mechanical properties of the blends are strongly influenced by the performance of the graft copolymer, which is in turn, determined by the level of functionality, molecular structure of the functionalized rubber and the interfacial concentration of the graft copolymer across the interface. The cumulative evidence obtained from torque rheometry, scanning electron microscopy, SEM, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile mechanical tests and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) supports this. It was shown that binary and ternary blends prepared with f-EPDM in the absence of Tris and containing lower levels of g-GMA effected a significant improvement in mechanical properties. This increase, particularly in elongation to break, could be accounted for by the occurrence of a reaction between the epoxy groups of GMA and the hydroxyl/carboxyl end groups of PET that would result in a graft copolymer which could, most probably, preferentially locate at the interface, thereby acting as an 'emulsifier' responsible for decreasing the interfacial tension between the otherwise two immiscible phases. This is supported by results from FTIR analysis of the fractionated PET phase of these blends which confirm the formation of an interfacial reaction, DMA results which show a clear shift in the T s of the blend components and SEM results which reveal very fine morphology, suggesting effective compatibilisation that is concomitant with the improvement observed in their tensile properties. Although Tris has given rise to highest amount of g-GMA, it resulted in lower mechanical properties than the optimized blends produced in the absence of Tris. This was attributed to the difference in the microstructure of the graft and the level of functionality in these samples resulting in less favourable structure responsible for the coarser dispersion of the rubber phase observed by SEM, the lower extent of T shift of the PET phase (DMA), the lower height of the torque curve during reactive blending and FTIR analysis of the separated PET phase that has indicated a lower extent of the interfacial chemical reaction between the phases in this Tris-containing blend sample. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted on ethylene-propylene copolymer during melt processing with peroxide initiation in the presence and absence of a more reactive comonomer (coagent), trimethylolpropane triacrylate (Tris). The characteristics of the grafting systems in terms of the grafting reaction yield and the nature and extent of the competing side reactions were examined. The homopolymers of GMA (Poly-GMA) and Tris (Poly-Tris) and the GMA-Tris copolymer (GMA-co-Tris) were synthesized and characterized. In the absence of the coagent, high levels of poly-GMA, which constituted the major competing reaction, was formed, giving rise to low GMA grafting levels. Further, this grafting system resulted in a high extent of gel formation and polymer crosslinking due to the high levels of peroxide needed to achieve optimum GMA grafting and a consequent large drop in the melt index (increased viscosity) of the polymer. In the presence of the coagent, however, the grafting system required much lower peroxide concentration, by almost an order of magnitude, to achieve the optimum grafting yield. The coagent-containing GMA-grafting system has also resulted in a drastic reduction in the extent of all competing reactions, and in particular, the GMA homopolymerization, leading to improved GMA grafting efficiency with no detectable gel or crosslinking. The mechanisms of the grafting reactions, in the presence and absence of Tris, are proposed.

The synthesis and characterization of new organosilicon derivatives of N3P3Cl6, N3P3[NH(CH2)3Si(OEt)3]6 (1), N3P3[NH(CH2)3Si(OEt)3]3[NCH3(CH2)3CN]3 (2), and N3P3[NH(CH2)3Si(OEt)3]3[HOC6H4(CH2)CN]3 (3) are reported. Pyrolysis of 1, 2, and 3 in air and at several temperatures results in nanostructured materials whose composition and morphology depend on the temperature of pyrolysis and the substituents of the phosphazenes ring. The products stem from the reaction of SiO2 with P2O5, leading to either crystalline Si5(PO4)6O, SiP2O7 or an amorphous phase as the glass Si5(PO4)6O/3SiO2·2P2O5, depending on the temperature and nature of the trimer precursors. From 1 at 800 °C, core−shell microspheres of SiO2 coated with Si5(PO4)6O are obtained, while in other cases, mesoporous or dense structures are observed. Atomic force microscopy examination after deposition of the materials on monocrystalline silicon wafers evidences morphology strongly dependent on the precursors. Isolated islands of size ∼9 nm are observed from 1, whereas dense nanostructures with a mean height of 13 nm are formed from 3. Brunauer−Emmett−Teller measurements show mesoporous materials with low surface areas. The proposed growth mechanism involves the formation of cross-linking structures and of vacancies by carbonization of the organic matter, where the silicon compounds nucleate. Thus, for the first time, unique silicon nanostructured materials are obtained from cyclic phosphazenes containing silicon.

This study describes the design and characterisation of the rheological and mechanical properties of binary polymeric systems composed of 2-Hydroxypropylcellulose and ɩ-carrageenan, designed as ophthalmic viscoelastic devices (OVDs). Platforms were characterised using dilute solution, flow and oscillatory rheometry and texture profile analysis. Rheological synergy between the two polymers was observed both in the dilute and gel states. All platforms exhibited pseudoplastic flow. Increasing polymer concentrations significantly decreased the loss tangent and rate index yet increased the storage and loss moduli, consistency, gel hardness, compressibility and adhesiveness, the latter being related to the in-vivo retention properties of the platforms. Binary polymeric platforms exhibited unique physicochemical properties, properties that could not be engineered using mono-polymeric platforms. Using characterisation methods that provide information relevant to their clinical performance, low-cost binary platforms (3% hydroxypropylcellulose and either 1% or 2% ɩ-carrageenan) were identified that exhibited rheological, textural and viscoelastic properties advantageous for use as OVDs.

Low density suburban development and excessive use of automobiles are associated with serious urban and environmental problems. These problems include traffic congestion, longer commuting times, high automobile dependency, air and water pollution, and increased depletion of natural resources. Master planned development suggests itself as a possible palliative for the ills of low density and high travel. The following study examines the patterns and dynamics of movement in a selection of master planned estates in Australia. The study develops new approaches for assessing the containment of travel within planned development. Its key aim is to clarify and map the relationships between trip generation and urban form and structure. The initial conceptual framework of the paper is developed in a review of literature related to urban form and travel behaviour. These concepts are tested empirically in a pilot study of suburban travel activity in master planned estates. A geographical information systems methodology is used to determine regional journey-to-work patterns and travel containment rates. Factors that influence selfcontainment patterns are estimated with a regression model. This research is a useful preliminary examination of travel self-containment in Australian master planned estates.

Its key aim is to clarify and map the relationships between trip generation and urban form and structure. The initial conceptual framework of the report is developed in a review of literature related to urban form and travel behaviour. These concepts are tested empirically in a pilot study of suburban travel activity in master planned estates. A geographical information systems (GIS) methodology is used to determine regional journey-to-work patterns and travel containment rates. Factors that influence self-containment patterns are estimated with a regression model. The key research findings of the pilot study are: - There is a strong relation between urban structural form and patterns of trip generation; - The travel self-containment of Australian master planned estates is lower than the scholarly literature implies would occur if appropriate planning principles to achieve sustainable urban travel were followed; - Proximity to the central business district, income level and education status are positively correlated with travel containment; - Master planned estates depend more on local and regional centres for employment than on the central business district; - The service sector is the major employer in and around master planned estates. It tends to provide part-time and casual employment rather than full-time employment; - Travel self-containment is negative correlated with car dependency. Master planned estates with less car dependent residents, and with good access to public transport, appear to be more self-contained and, consequently, more sustainable than the norm. This research is a useful preliminary examination of travel self-containment in Australian master planned estates. It by no means exhausts the subject. In future research we hope to further assess sustainable travel patterns with more detailed spatial analysis.

In this paper, a new power sharing control method for a microgrid with several distributed generation units is proposed. The presence of both inertial and noninertial sources with different power ratings, maximum power point tracking, and various types of loads pose a great challenge for the power sharing and system stability. The conventional droop control method is modified to achieve the desired power sharing ensuring system stability in a highly resistive network. A transformation matrix is formed to derive equivalent real and reactive power output of the converter and equivalent feedback gain matrix for the modified droop equation. The proposed control strategy, aimed for the prototype microgrid planned at Queensland University of Technology, is validated through extensive simulation results using PSCAD/EMTDC software.

Isolation of a faulted segment, from either side of a fault, in a radial feeder that has several converter interfaced DGs is a challenging task when current sensing protective devices are employed. The protective device, even if it senses a downstream fault, may not operate if fault current level is low due to the current limiting operation of converters. In this paper, a new inverse type relay is introduced based on line admittance measurement to protect a distribution network, which has several converter interfaced DGs. The basic operation of this relay, its grading and reach settings are explained. Moreover a method is proposed to compensate the fault resistance such that the relay operation under this condition is reliable. Then designed relay performances are evaluated in a radial distribution network. The results are validated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and MATLAB calculations.

This paper shows how the power quality can be improved in a microgrid that is supplying a nonlinear and unbalanced load. The microgrid contains a hybrid combination of inertial and converter interfaced distributed generation units where a decentralized power sharing algorithm is used to control its power management. One of the distributed generators in the microgrid is used as a power quality compensator for the unbalanced and harmonic load. The current reference generation for power quality improvement takes into account the active and reactive power to be supplied by the micro source which is connected to the compensator. Depending on the power requirement of the nonlinear load, the proposed control scheme can change modes of operation without any external communication interfaces. The compensator can operate in two modes depending on the entire power demand of the unbalanced nonlinear load. The proposed control scheme can even compensate system unbalance caused by the single-phase micro sources and load changes. The efficacy of the proposed power quality improvement control and method in such a microgrid is validated through extensive simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC software with detailed dynamic models of the micro sources and power electronic converters

Raman spectroscopy of the mineral partzite Cu2Sb2(O,OH)7 complimented with infrared spectroscopy were studied and related to the structure of the mineral. The Raman spectrum shows some considerable complexity with a number of overlapping bands observed at 479, 520, 594, 607 and 620 cm-1 with additional low intensity bands found at 675, 730, 777 and 837 cm-1. Raman bands of partzite in the spectral region 590 to 675 cm-1 are attributable the ν1 symmetric stretching modes. The Raman bands at 479 and 520 cm-1 are assigned to the ν3 antisymmetric stretching modes. Raman bands at 1396 and 1455 cm-1 are attributed to SbOH deformation modes. A complex pattern resulting from the overlapping band of the water and OH units is found. Raman bands are observed at 3266, 3376, 3407, 3563, 3586 and 3622 cm-1. The first three bands are assigned to water stretching vibrations. The three higher wavenumber bands are assigned to the stretching vibrations of the OH units. It is proposed that based upon observation of the Raman spectra that water is involved in the structure of partzite. Thus the formula Cu2Sb2(O,OH)7 may be better written as Cu2Sb2(O,OH)7 •xH2O

The hydrotalcite based upon manganese known as charmarite Mn4Al2(OH)12CO3•3H2O has been synthesised with different Mn/Al ratios from 4:1 to 2:1. Impurities of manganese oxide, rhodochrosite and bayerite at low concentrations were also produced during the synthesis. The thermal stability of charmarite was investigated using thermogravimetry. The manganese hydrotalcite decomposed in stages with mass loss steps at 211, 305 and 793°C. The product of the thermal decomposition was amorphous material mixed with manganese oxide. A comparison is made with the thermal decomposition of the Mg/Al hydrotalcite. It is concluded that the synthetic charmarite is slightly less stable than hydrotalcite.
