A new scheme for the code of chemical environments of compounds is described in this paper, and three molecular similarity methods have been used to select nearest neighbors from four different types of probe compounds. One of the methods is based on the C-13 NMR spectra. The second method is based on the code of chemical environments and molecular topological index A(x). The third approach, i.e. the Tanimoto coefficient, is also based on the code of chemical environments, but not to use the topological index. Five nearest neighbors for each probe compound using these three molecular similarity methods were determined and taken from the database of 7309 structures. The results indicate that the scheme of the chemical environment code and the method for similarity measure of intermolecules suggested in this study are reasonable. The blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-beta-hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB-co-HV)/poly(p-vinylphenol)(PVPh) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy and high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR techniques. Single glass transition temperatures existing in the whole composition range indicates that these blends are miscible. The presence of hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl of PVPh and carbonyl of P(HB-co-HV), shown by FT-IR spectra, is the origin of the miscibility. Furthermore, results obtained by high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR give more information about the structure of the blends. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polymerization of styrene with the neodymium phosphonate Nd(P-507)/H2O/Al(i-Bu)(3) catalytic system has been examined. The polymer obtained was separated into a soluble and an insoluble fraction by 2-butanone extraction. C-13-NMR spectra indicate that the insoluble fraction is isotactic polystyrene and the soluble one is syndiotactic-rich atactic polystyrene. The polymerization features are described and discussed. The optimum conditions for the polymerization are as follows: [Nd] = (3.5-5.0) x 10(-2) mol/L; [styrene] = 5 mol/L; [Al]/[Nd] = 6-8 mol/mol; [H2O]/[Al] = 0.05-0.08 mol/mol; polymerization temperature around 70 degrees C. The percent yield of isotactic polystyrene (TY) is markedly affected by catalyst aging temperature. With increase of the aging temperature from 40 to 70 degrees C, TY increases from 9% to 48%. Using AlEt3 and Al(i-Bu)(2)H instead of Al(i-Bu)(3) decreases the yield of isotactic polystyrene. Different neodymium compounds give the following activity order: Nd(P-507)(3) > Nd(P-204)(3) > Nd(OPri)(3) > NdCl3 + C2HF5OH > Nd(naph)(3). With Nd(naph)(3) as catalyst, only atactic polystyrene is obtained. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Copolymers based on monomers phenolphthalein (PP)/4,4'-thiodiphenol (Bis-T)/4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone (DCDPS) were prepared by a route involving the toluene, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and anhydrous potassium carbonate synthesis. The range of optimum reaction temperature was between 185 and 195 degrees C. The copolymers were characterized by C-13 NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and torsion braid analysis. It was found that all of the copolymers were random and homogeneous and their glass transition temperatures (T-g) decreased linearly with an increase of Bis-T contents in the copolymers. The thermal stability determined by thermogravimetry analysis in air atmosphere indicated that the copolymer had better resistance to thermo-oxidative degradation. Dynamic mechanical measurement showed that (PP/Bis-T) PES copolymers containing 0-50 mol% of Bis-T components had two secondary relaxations. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible blends of LLDPE with styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) has been investigated by means of C-13 CPMAS n.m.r. and d.s.c. techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/SBS blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and SBS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the amorphous region of LLDPE acid PS block domain of SBS, respectively. It was also found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, with serious effects on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE. The effect of LLDPE-g-PS on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE in the LLDPE/SBS blends obviously depends on the composition of the blends, but has little dependence on the PS grafting yields of LLDPE-g-PS. A series of novel aromatic diamines (1-3) containing kinked cyclohexylidene moieties was synthesized by a reaction of excess aniline and corresponding methyl-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives. The structures of (1-3) were identifield by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, and FT-IR. The polymers were synthesized from the obtained diamines and various aromatic dianhydrides by the conventional polycondensation reaction followed by chemical imidization as well as high-temperature one-step polymerization. The inherent viscosities and weight-average molecular weights of the resulting polyimides were in the ranges of 0.55-1.58 dL/g and (7.4-15.2) x 10(4) g/mol, respectively. The prepared polyimides showed excellent thermal stabilities and good solubility. All polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, tetrachloroethane, etc., and the glass transition temperatures were observed at 290-372 degrees C.

A series of macrocyclic arylate dimers have been selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation of o-phthaloyldichloride with bisphenols. A combination of GPC, FAB-MS, H-1 and C-13 NMR unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature. Although single-crystal X-ray analysis of two such macrocycles reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structures, these macrocycles can undergo facile melt polymerization to give high molecular weight polyarylates.

Macrocyclic arylene ether ketone dimer was isolated from a mixture of cyclic oligomers obtained by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of bisphenol A and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone and easily polymerized to high molecular weight linear poly(ether ketone). The cyclic compound was characterized by FTIR, H-1- and C-13-NMR, and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Analysis of the spectral and crystal structure reveals extreme distortions of he phenyl rings attached to the isopropylidene center and of the turning points of the molecular polygons. The release of the ring strain on ring-opening combined with entropical difference between the linear polymer chain and the more rigid macrocycle at temperatures of polymerization may be the proposed motivating factors in the polymerization of this precursor to high molecular weight poly(ether ketone). The influence of the syndiotacticity on the crystallization behaviour of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) has been investigated. The syndiotacticity has been measured by C-13-NMR spectroscopy and the phase formation has been observed by electron diffraction of oriented samples. It is shown that the crystal phase formation depends strongly on the perfection of the tacticity of the macromolecules.
Compatibility and specific interactions in poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) and poly(p-vinylphenol) blends
Resumo:
The miscibility and specific interactions in poly (beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) , fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometer and high resolution solid state C-13 NMR, A single composition-dependent glass transition temperatures were obtained by DSC which indicate the blends of PHB/PVPh were miscible in the melt state, The experimental glass transition temperatures were fitted quite well with those obtained from Couchman-Karasz equation. The FTIR study shows that the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding exists in blends of PHB with strong proton acceptor and PVPh with strong proton donor and is the origin of its compatibility. The CPMAS C-13 NMR spectra also show that the strong hydrogen bonding exists in PHB/PVPh blends. From the T-1 rho(H) relaxation time it follows that the blends of PHB/PVPh(40/60, 20/80) studied are completely homogeneous on the scale of about 3.2 nm.

The compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible LLDPE/PS blends has been studied by means of C-13 CP-MAS NMR and DSC techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/PS blends, and the compatibilizing effect of LLDPE-g-PS on LLDPE/PS blends depends on the PS grafting yield and molecular structure of the compatibilizers and also on the composition of the blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and PS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the noncrystalline region of the LLDPE and PS domain, respectively. Meanwhile, LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, resulting in an obvious change in the crystallization behavior of LLDPE. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PSAm)-titanium complexes (PSAm . Ti) were prepared and characterized. It is found that the coordination number of acrylamide (Am) to Ti in the complexes is strongly dependent on Am content in PSAm, but not on [Am]/[Ti] ratio in the feed. The infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectra suggest that the polymer-supported complexes possess the structure [GRAPHICS] The catalytic behavior of the complexes in styrene polymerization is described. The catalytic activity is markedly affected by [Al]/[Ti] ratio in the complexes. C-13 NMR, IR, and DSC data indicate that the polystyrene obtained with PSAm . Ti/MAO (MAO = methylaluminoxane) is highly syndiotactic. Use of Et(3)Al and i-Bu(3)Al in place of MAO gives atactic polystyrene. The activities of the various aluminum compounds used as the cocatalysts decrease in the order: MAO > Et(3)Al > i-Bu(3)Al. The polymer-supported complexes show relatively high activity even after the complexes had been exposed to air for 19 h or higher polymerization temperature. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
