The aim of the present study was to determine the size at sexual maturity in the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson, 1861, from a population located in Mendonça, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The crabs were sampled monthly (July 2005 to June 2007), at Barra Mansa reservoir. The specimens were captured manually or in sieves passed through the aquatic vegetation. The crabs were captured and separated by sex based on morphology of the pleon and on the number of pleopods. The following dimensions were measured: carapace width (CW); carapace length (CL); propodus length (PL); and abdomen width (AW). The morphological analysis of the gonads was used to identify and categorize individuals according to their stage of development. The morphological maturity was estimated based on the analysis of relative growth based on the allometric equation y = ax b. The gonadal maturity was based on the morphology of the gonads by the method CW50 which indicates the size at which 50% of the individuals in the population showed gonads morphologically mature to reproduction. The biometric relationships that best demonstrated the different patterns of growth for the juvenile and adult stages were CW vs. PL for males and CW vs. AW for females (p<0.001). Based on these relationships, the estimated value to morphological sexual maturity was 21.5 mm (CW) in males and 19.7 mm (CW) in females. The determination of the size at sexual maturity and the adjustment of the data based on the logistic curve (CW50) resulted in a size of 38.2 mm for males and 39.4 mm for females (CW). Based on the data obtained for sexual maturity for D. pagei, we can estimate a minimum size for capture of 40 mm (CW). This minimum size allows at least half of the population to reproduce and retains the juveniles and a portion of the adults in the population.

The purpose of this paper is to review the scientific literature from August 2007 to July 2010. The review is focused on more than 420 published papers. The review will not cover information coming from international meetings available only in abstract form. Fingermarks constitute an important chapter with coverage of the identification process as well as detection techniques on various surfaces. We note that the research has been very dense both at exploring and understanding current detection methods as well as bringing groundbreaking techniques to increase the number of marks detected from various objects. The recent report from the US National Research Council (NRC) is a milestone that has promoted a critical discussion on the state of forensic science and its associated research. We can expect a surge of interest in research in relation to cognitive aspect of mark and print comparison, establishment of relevant forensic error rates and statistical modelling of the selectivity of marks' attributes. Other biometric means of forensic identification such as footmarks or earmarks are also covered in the report. Compared to previous years, we noted a decrease in the number of submission in these areas. No doubt that the NRC report has set the seed for further investigation of these fields as well.

This letter describes a data telemetry biomedical experiment. An implant, consisting of a biometric data sensor, electronics, an antenna, and a biocompatible capsule, is described. All the elements were co-designed in order to maximize the transmission distance. The device was implanted in a pig for an in vivo experiment of temperature monitoring.

Este trabajo presenta una metodología para detectar y realizar el seguimiento de características faciales. En el primer paso del procedimiento se detectan caras mediante Adaboost con cascadas de clasificadores débiles. El segundo paso busca las características internas de la cara mediante el CSR, detectando zonas de interés. Una vez que estas características se capturan, un proceso de tracking basado en el descriptor SIFT, que hemos llamado pseudo-SIFT, es capaz de guardar información sobre la evolución de movimiento en las regiones detectadas. Además, un conjunto de datos públicos ha sido desarrollado con el propósito de compartirlo con otras investigaciones sobre detección, clasificación y tracking. Experimentos reales muestran la robustez de este trabajo y su adaptabilidad para trabajos futuros.

Este trabajo presenta un sistema para detectar y clasificar objetos binarios según la forma de éstos. En el primer paso del procedimiento, se aplica un filtrado para extraer el contorno del objeto. Con la información de los puntos de forma se obtiene un descriptor BSM con características altamente descriptivas, universales e invariantes. En la segunda fase del sistema se aprende y se clasifica la información del descriptor mediante Adaboost y Códigos Correctores de Errores. Se han usado bases de datos públicas, tanto en escala de grises como en color, para validar la implementación del sistema diseñado. Además, el sistema emplea una interfaz interactiva en la que diferentes métodos de procesamiento de imágenes pueden ser aplicados.

This work covers two aspects. First, it generally compares and summarizes the similarities and differences of state of the art feature detector and descriptor and second it presents a novel approach of detecting intestinal content (in particular bubbles) in capsule endoscopy images. Feature detectors and descriptors providing invariance to change of perspective, scale, signal-noise-ratio and lighting conditions are important and interesting topics in current research and the number of possible applications seems to be numberless. After analysing a selection of in the literature presented approaches, this work investigates in their suitability for applications information extraction in capsule endoscopy images. Eventually, a very good performing detector of intestinal content in capsule endoscopy images is presented. A accurate detection of intestinal content is crucial for all kinds of machine learning approaches and other analysis on capsule endoscopy studies because they occlude the field of view of the capsule camera and therefore those frames need to be excluded from analysis. As a so called “byproduct” of this investigation a graphical user interface supported Feature Analysis Tool is presented to execute and compare the discussed feature detectors and descriptor on arbitrary images, with configurable parameters and visualized their output. As well the presented bubble classifier is part of this tool and if a ground truth is available (or can also be generated using this tool) a detailed visualization of the validation result will be performed.

S'ha estudiat una població de tortuga de rierol (Mauremys leprosa) present al curs principal del riu Llobregat, al seu pas pel municipi d'Abrera (Baix Llobregat). El tram té una longitud de 4.140 metres de recorregut sinuós, inclòs a l'EIN Riu Llobregat, amb predomini d'albaredes i pollancredes. S'ha caracteritzat el tram de riu segons el tipus de secció que presenta al llarg de l'àrea d'estudi. L'activitat de les tortugues comprèn de mitjans de febrer a mitjans de novembre, sense que s'hagi detectat una disminució a l'estiu. L'ús de l'espai no és uniforme amb una marcada preferència per trams del riu amb una certa fondària i velocitat de l'aigua alentida. S’han capturat 68 tortugues de rierol mitjançant nanses de pesca adaptades i, un cop marcades, s'han alliberat al mateix lloc. Per a cada animal es van obtenir les dades biomètriques i es va determinar el sexe. Mitjançant el mètode de captura-recaptura s'ha estimat la mida de la població en 100 ± 11 individus. La ràtio de sexes de la població és de 2:1 a favor dels mascles. La distribució de classes d'edats permet comprovar que la població està ben estructurada. No s'ha comprovat la reproducció, tot i que el nombre de femelles reproductores és elevat. La falta de captures de nounats i d’individus d'un hivern d’edat, i el baix nombre de juvenils capturats fa pensar que la taxa de reclutament és baixa. La mobilitat dels animals aigües amunt està limitada per la presència de dos assuts a l'àrea d'estudi, la qual cosa compromet la connectivitat de la població dins i fora de l'àrea d'estudi. També s'ha detectat la presència de tortuga de Florida (Trachemys scripta spp.) sense que s'hagi observat cap interacció entre ambdues espècies. Es proposen un seguit de mesures per afavorir la conservació de la tortuga de rierol.

Abstract-Due to the growing use of biometric technologies inour modern society, spoofing attacks are becoming a seriousconcern. Many solutions have been proposed to detect the use offake "fingerprints" on an acquisition device. In this paper, wepropose to take advantage of intrinsic features of friction ridgeskin: pores. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential ofusing pores to detect spoofing attacks.Results show that the use of pores is a promising approach. Fourmajor observations were made: First, results confirmed that thereproduction of pores on fake "fingerprints" is possible. Second,the distribution of the total number of pores between fake andgenuine fingerprints cannot be discriminated. Third, thedifference in pore quantities between a query image and areference image (genuine or fake) can be used as a discriminatingfactor in a linear discriminant analysis. In our sample, theobserved error rates were as follows: 45.5% of false positive (thefake passed the test) and 3.8% of false negative (a genuine printhas been rejected). Finally, the performance is improved byusing the difference of pore quantity obtained between adistorted query fingerprint and a non-distorted referencefingerprint. By using this approach, the error rates improved to21.2% of false acceptation rate and 8.3% of false rejection rate.

A study was conducted to determine the morphological and biometric characteristics of Trypanosoma isolated from 50 capybaras animals, raised in captivity in the Peruvian Amazon. Trypanosoma was found in 14 blood samples using the microhaematocrit, wide drop, and Giemsa-stain methods and T. evansi was identified through morphological details in all 14 positive samples (the subterminal kinetoplast, the developed undulating membrane, and a long free flagellum were used for the identification of the agent).

Objectives: Birth defects are a major health burden. Primary prevention is at present emerging, i.e. folate supplementation. When it is not possible, as is still the case for most birth defects, research is needed to determine how an optimal provision of prenatal diagnosis and use of services can be achieved. Ultrasound scans in the midtrimester of pregnancy are now a routine part of antenatal care in most European countries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies by fetal ultrasonographic examination across Europe. Methods: Data from 20 registries of congenital malformations in 12 European countries were included. The prenatal ultrasound screening programs in the countries ranged from no routine screening to 3 fetal scans offered, including 2 for biometric purposes and 1 for search of congenital anomalies, the anomaly scan. Results: There were 8,126 cases with congenital anomalies with an overall prenatal detection rate of 44.3%. Termination of pregnancy was performed in 1,657 cases (21.8%). There was significant variation in the prenatal detection rate between regions with the lowest detection rate in registries of countries without routine fetal screening (Denmark and The Netherlands) and the highest detection rate in registries of countries with at least 1 anomaly scan (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK). However, there were large variations among the registries with a high detection rate. There were significant differences in the prenatal detection rate and proportion of induced abortions between isolated anomalies and associated anomalies (chromosomal aberrations, recognized syndromes, and multiple without chromosomal aberrations or recognized syndromes). Conclusions: Prenatal detection rate of congenital anomalies by fetal scan varies significantly between registries of European countries even with the same screening policy. Prenatal detection of congenital anomalies is significantly higher when associated malformations are present. The rate of induced abortions varies between registries of countries even with the same detection rate of congenital anomalies. The variation described may be due to cultural and policy differences. Synthetic combinatorial peptide libraries in positional scanning format (PS-SCL) have recently emerged as a useful tool for the analysis of T cell recognition. This includes identification of potentially cross-reactive sequences of self or pathogen origin that could be relevant for the understanding of TCR repertoire selection and maintenance, as well as of the cross-reactive potential of Ag-specific immune responses. In this study, we have analyzed the recognition of sequences retrieved by using a biometric analysis of the data generated by screening a PS-SCL with a tumor-reactive CTL clone specific for an immunodominant peptide from the melanocyte differentiation and tumor-associated Ag Melan-A. We found that 39% of the retrieved peptides were recognized by the CTL clone used for PS-SCL screening. The proportion of peptides recognized was higher among those with both high predicted affinity for the HLA-A2 molecule and high predicted stimulatory score. Interestingly, up to 94% of the retrieved peptides were cross-recognized by other Melan-A-specific CTL. Cross-recognition was at least partially focused, as some peptides were cross-recognized by the majority of CTL. Importantly, stimulation of PBMC from melanoma patients with the most frequently recognized peptides elicited the expansion of heterogeneous CD8(+) T cell populations, one fraction of which cross-recognized Melan-A. Together, these results underline the high predictive value of PS-SCL for the identification of sequences cross-recognized by Ag-specific T cells.

En aquest treball es descriu l'ús de les mesures de semblança molecular quàntica (MSMQ) per a caracteritzar propietats i activitats biològiques moleculars, i definir descriptors emprables per a construir models QSAR i QSPR. L'estudi que es presenta consisteix en la continuació d'un treball recent, on es descrivien relacions entre el paràmetre log P i MSMQ, donant així una alternativa a aquest parimetre hidrofòbic empíric. L'actual contribució presenta una nova mesura, capaç d'estendre l'ús de les MSMQ, que consisteix en l'energia de repulsió electró-electró (Vee). Aquest valor, disponible normalment a partir de programari de química quàntica, considera la molècula com una sola entitat, i no cal recórrer a l'ús decontribucions de fragments. La metodologia s'ha aplicat a cinc tipus diferents de compostos on diferents propietats moleculars i activitats biològiques s'han correlacionat amb Vee com a únic descriptor molecular. En tots els casos estudiats, s'han obtingut correlacions satisfactòries.

The family Acrochordiceratidae Arthaber, 1911 ranges in age from latest Spathian to the middle/late Anisian boundary, and it represents a major component of ammonoid faunas during that time. The middle Anisian genus Acrochordiceras Hyatt, 1877 is the most widespread taxon of the family and occurs abundantly worldwide within the low paleolatitude belt. However, there is a profusion of species names available for Acrochordiceras. This excessive diversity at the species level essentially results from the fact that sufficiently large samples were not available, thus leading to a typological approach to its taxonomy. Based on new extensive collections obtained from the Anisian (Middle Triassic) Fossil Hill Member (Star Peak Group, north-west Nevada) for which a high resolution biostratigraphic frame is available, the taxonomy and biostratigraphy of the genus Acrochordiceras Hyatt, 1877 is herein revised with respect to its intra-specific variation. Morphological and biometric studies (c. 550 bedrock-controlled specimens were measured) show that only one species occurs in each stratigraphic level. Continuous ranges of intra-specific variation of studied specimens enable us to synonymize Haydenites Diener, 1907, Silesiacrochordiceras Diener, 1916 and Epacrochordiceras Spath, 1934 with Acrochordiceras Hyatt, 1877. Three stratigraphically successive species are herein recognized in the low paleolatitude middle Anisian faunas from Nevada: A. hatschekii (Diener, 1907), A. hyatti Meek, 1877 and A. carolinae Mojsisovics, 1882. Moreover, an assessment of intra-specific variation of the adult size range does not support recognition of a dimorphic pair (Acrochordiceras and Epacrochordiceras) as previously suggested by other workers (Epacrochordiceras is the compressed and weakly ornamented end-member variant of Acrochordiceras). The successive middle Anisian species of Acrochordiceras form an anagenetic lineage characterized by increasing involution, adult size and intra-specific variation. This taxonomic revision based on new bedrock-controlled collections is thus an important prerequisite before studying the evolution of the group.

The problem of stability analysis for a class of neutral systems with mixed time-varying neutral, discrete and distributed delays and nonlinear parameter perturbations is addressed. By introducing a novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and combining the descriptor model transformation, the Leibniz-Newton formula, some free-weighting matrices, and a suitable change of variables, new sufficient conditions are established for the stability of the considered system, which are neutral-delay-dependent, discrete-delay-range dependent, and distributeddelay-dependent. The conditions are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and can be efficiently solved using convex programming techniques. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method

Lack of physical activity can cause health problems and diminish organizational productivity. We conducted a 12-months long field experiment in a financial services company to study the effects of slow-moving treadmills outfitted for office work on employee productivity and health. 43 sedentary volunteers were assigned randomly to two groups to receive treadmill workstations 7 months apart. Employees could opt at will for standard chair-desk arrangement. Biometric measurements were taken quarterly and weekly online performance surveys were administered to study participants and to more than 200 non-participants and their supervisors.In this study we explore three questions concerning the effects of the introduction of treadmills in the workplace. (1) Does it improve overall physical activity? (2) Does it improve health measures? (3) Does it improve performance? The answers are as follows. (1) Yes (net effect of almost half an hour a day). (2) Yes (small gains, one minor decline). (3) No and yes (initial decline followed by increase to recover to initial level within one year) – based on weekly employee self reports.
