We present the results of our detailed pseudospectral direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies, with up to 1024(3) collocation points, of incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions, without a mean magnetic field. Our study concentrates on the dependence of various statistical properties of both decaying and statistically steady MHD turbulence on the magnetic Prandtl number Pr-M over a large range, namely 0.01 <= Pr-M <= 10. We obtain data for a wide variety of statistical measures, such as probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the moduli of the vorticity and current density, the energy dissipation rates, and velocity and magnetic-field increments, energy and other spectra, velocity and magnetic-field structure functions, which we use to characterize intermittency, isosurfaces of quantities, such as the moduli of the vorticity and current density, and joint PDFs, such as those of fluid and magnetic dissipation rates. Our systematic study uncovers interesting results that have not been noted hitherto. In particular, we find a crossover from a larger intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at large Pr-M, to a smaller intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at low Pr-M. Furthermore, a comparison of our results for decaying MHD turbulence and its forced, statistically steady analogue suggests that we have strong universality in the sense that, for a fixed value of Pr-M, multiscaling exponent ratios agree, at least within our error bars, for both decaying and statistically steady homogeneous, isotropic MHD turbulence.

This paper deals with the evaluation of the component-laminate load-carrying capacity, i.e., to calculate the loads that cause the failure of the individual layers and the component-laminate as a whole in four-bar mechanism. The component-laminate load-carrying capacity is evaluated using the Tsai-Wu-Hahn failure criterion for various layups. The reserve factor of each ply in the component-laminate is calculated by using the maximum resultant force and the maximum resultant moment occurring at different time steps at the joints of the mechanism. Here, all component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber reinforced laminates and have thin rectangular cross-sections. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. They are linked to each other by means of revolute joints. We restrict ourselves to linear materials with small strains within each elastic body (beam). Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically nonlinear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and nonlinear 1-D analyses along the three beam reference curves. For the thin rectangular cross-sections considered here, the 2-D cross-sectional nonlinearity is also overwhelming. This can be perceived from the fact that such sections constitute a limiting case between thin-walled open and closed sections, thus inviting the nonlinear phenomena observed in both. The strong elastic couplings of anisotropic composite laminates complicate the model further. However, a powerful mathematical tool called the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) not only enables such a dimensional reduction, but also provides asymptotically correct analytical solutions to the nonlinear cross-sectional analysis. Such closed-form solutions are used here in conjunction with numerical techniques for the rest of the problem to predict more quickly and accurately than would otherwise be possible. Local 3-D stress, strain and displacement fields for representative sections in the component-bars are recovered, based on the stress resultants from the 1-D global beam analysis. A numerical example is presented which illustrates the failure of each component-laminate and the mechanism as a whole.

Literature suggests that apart from a significant percentage of water loss from seepage, downward seepage from the channel causes an increase in the mobility of channel bed materials and thus changes the channel stability. Consequently, regime conditions (which provide the relationship among hydraulic parameters) should also be revised by incorporating downward seepage as an additional parameter. In the present work, regime conditions for the prediction of channel geometry in alluvial channels affected by downward seepage have been formulated on the basis of experimental observations. The mechanism of folding of the small protein barstar in the pre-transition zone at pH 7, 25 degrees C has been characterized using rapid mixing techniques. Earlier studies had established the validity of the three-state U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N mechanism for folding and unfolding in the presence of guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) at concentrations greater than 2.0 M, where U-S and U-F are the slow-refolding and fast-refolding unfolded forms, respectively, and N is the fully folded form. It is now shown that early intermediates, I-S1 and I-S2 as well as a late native-like intermediate, I-N, are present on the folding pathways of U-S, and an early intermediate I-F1 on the folding pathway of U-F, when bars tar is refolded in concentrations of GdnHCl below 2.0 M. The rates of formation and disappearance of I-N, and the rates of formation of N at three different concentrations of GdnHCl in the pre-transition zone have been measured. The data indicate that in 1.5 M GdnHCl, I-N is not fully populated on the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway because the rate of its formation is so slow that the U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N pathway can effectively compete with that pathway. In 1.0 M GdnHCl, the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N transition is so fast that I-N is fully populated. In 0.6 M GdnHCl, I-N appears not to be fully populated because an alternative folding pathway, U-S --> I-S2 --> N, becomes available for the folding of U-S, in addition to the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway Measurement of the binding of the hydrophobic dye 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulphonate (ANS) during folding indicates that ANS binds to two distinct intermediates, I-M1 and I-M2, that form within 2 ms on the U-S --> I-M1 --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N and U-S --> I-M2 --> I-S2 --> N pathways. There is no evidence for the accumulation of intermediates that can bind ANS on the folding pathway of U-F.

In this paper, we propose the first approximation for thickness of Quaternary sediment and late Quaternary early Tertiary topography for the part of lower reaches of Narmada valley in a systematic way using the shallow seismic method, that records both horizontal and vertical components of the microtremor (ambient noise) caused by natural processes. The measurements of microtremors were carried out at 31 sites spaced at a grid interval of 5 km s using Lennartz seismometer (5 s period) and City shark-II data acquisition system. The signals recorded were analysed for horizontal to the vertical (H/V) spectral ratio using GEOPSY software. For the present study, we concentrate on frequency range between 0.2 Hz and 10 Hz. The thickness of unconsolidated sediments at various sites is calculated based on non-linear regression equations proposed by Ibs-von Seht and Wohlenberg (1999) and Parolai et al. (2002). The estimated thickness is used to plot digital elevation model and cross profiles correlating with geomorphology and geology of the study area. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A natural velocity field method for shape optimization of reinforced concrete (RC) flexural members has been demonstrated. The possibility of shape optimization by modifying the shape of an initially rectangular section, in addition to variation of breadth and depth along the length, has been explored. Necessary shape changes have been computed using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) technique. Genetic algorithm (Goldberg and Samtani 1986) has been used to optimize the diameter and number of main reinforcement bars. A limit-state design approach has been adopted for the nonprismatic RC sections. Such relevant issues as formulation of optimization problem, finite-element modeling, and solution procedure have been described. Three design examples-a simply supported beam, a cantilever beam, and a two-span continuous beam, all under uniformly distributed loads-have been optimized. The results show a significant savings (40-56%) in material and cost and also result in aesthetically pleasing structures. This procedure will lead to considerable cost saving, particularly in cases of mass-produced precast members and a heavy cast-in-place member such as a bridge girder.

This paper presents an assessment of the flexural behavior of 15 fully/partially prestressed high strength concrete beams containing steel fibers investigated using three-dimensional nonlinear finite elemental analysis. The experimental results consisted of eight fully and seven partially prestressed beams, which were designed to be flexure dominant in the absence of fibers. The main parameters varied in the tests were: the levels of prestressing force (i.e, in partially prestressed beams 50% of the prestress was reduced with the introduction of two high strength deformed bars instead), fiber volume fractions (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%), fiber location (full depth and partial depth over full length and half the depth over the shear span only). A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted using ANSYS 5.5 [Theory Reference Manual. In: Kohnke P, editor. Elements Reference Manual. 8th ed. September 1998] general purpose finite element software to study the flexural behavior of both fully and partially prestressed fiber reinforced concrete beams. Influence of fibers on the concrete failure surface and stress-strain response of high strength concrete and the nonlinear stress-strain curves of prestressing wire and deformed bar were considered in the present analysis. In the finite element model. tension stiffening and bond slip between concrete and reinforcement (fibers., prestressing wire, and conventional reinforcing steel bar) have also been considered explicitly. The fraction of the entire volume of the fiber present along the longitudinal axis of the prestressed beams alone has been modeled explicitly as it is expected that these fibers would contribute to the mobilization of forces required to sustain the applied loads across the crack interfaces through their bridging action. A comparison of results from both tests and analysis on all 15 specimens confirm that, inclusion of fibers over a partial depth in the tensile side of the prestressed flexural structural members was economical and led to considerable cost saving without sacrificing on the desired performance. However. beams having fibers over half the depth in only the shear span, did not show any increase in the ultimate load or deformational characteristics when compared to plain concrete beams. Such closed-form solutions are used here in conjunction with numerical techniques for the rest of the problem to predict multi-body dynamic responses, more quickly and accurately than would otherwise be possible. The analysis methodology can be viewed as a three-step procedure: First, the cross-sectional properties of each bar of the mechanism is determined analytically based on an asymptotic procedure, starting from Classical Laminated Shell Theory (CLST) and taking advantage of its thin strip geometry. Second, the dynamic response of the nonlinear, flexible fourbar mechanism is simulated by treating each bar as a 1-D beam, discretized using finite elements, and employing energy-preserving and -decaying time integration schemes for unconditional stability. Finally, local 3-D deformations and stresses in the entire system are recovered, based on the 1-D responses predicted in the previous step. With the model, tools and procedure in place, we shall attempt to identify and investigate a few problems where the cross-sectional nonlinearities are significant. This will be carried out by varying stacking sequences and material properties, and speculating on the dominating diagonal and coupling terms in the closed-form nonlinear beam stiffness matrix. Numerical examples will be presented and results from this analysis will be compared with those available in the literature, for linear cross-sectional analysis and isotropic materials as special cases.

We obtain, by extensive direct numerical simulations, time-dependent and equal-time structure functions for the vorticity, in both quasi-Lagrangian and Eulerian frames, for the direct-cascade regime in two-dimensional fluid turbulence with air-drag-induced friction. We show that different ways of extracting time scales from these time-dependent structure functions lead to different dynamic-multiscaling exponents, which are related to equal-time multiscaling exponents by different classes of bridge relations; for a representative value of the friction we verify that, given our error bars, these bridge relations hold.

Charts relating the capacitance to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. These are used to design hairpin line and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using microstrip comb line filters. The experimental results agree reasonably well with the design specifications. Getsinger's original charts for parallel coupled bars between parallel plates have been formulated for the microstrip case. Corresponding charts relating the capacitances to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. Examples of the use of these charts are shown in the design of hairpin lines and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using comb line filters. The hairpin line/hybrid hairpin line filters were designed to operate at a central frequency of 9÷5 GHz with 11 per cent bandwidth and 0÷5 dB ripple. The three filters constituting the comb line filters have center frequencies of 2÷4, 3÷0 and 3÷6 GHz. The components so designed were fabricated and tested. The dielectric used for the microstrip was teflon. Experimental curves for the attenuation (insertion loss) and VSWR are given. The design specifications arc satisfied quite well.

Nanocrystalline delta-NbNx samples have been synthesized by reacting NbCl5 and urea at three different temperatures. A comparison of their structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties is reported in the present study. The size of the particles and their agglomeration extent increase with increasing reaction temperature. The sample prepared at 900 degrees C showed the highest superconducting transition temperature (T-c) of 16.2 K with a transition width, similar to 1.8 K, as obtained from the resistivity measurement on cold-pressed bars. Above T-c, magnetization measurements revealed the presence of surface ferromagnetism which coexists with superconductivity below T-c. Heat capacity measurements confirm superconductivity with strong electron-phonon coupling constant. The sample prepared at 800 degrees C shows a lower T-c (10 K) while that prepared at 700 degrees C exhibit no superconductivity down to the lowest temperature (3 K) measured.

In this paper we calculate the potential for a prolate spheroidal distribution as in a dark matter halo with a radially varying eccentricity. This is obtained by summing up the shell-by-shell contributions of isodensity surfaces, which are taken to be concentric and with a common polar axis and with an axis ratio that varies with radius. Interestingly, the constancy of potential inside a shell is shown to be a good approximation even when the isodensity contours are dissimilar spheroids, as long as the radial variation in eccentricity is small as seen in realistic systems. We consider three cases where the isodensity contours are more prolate at large radii, or are less prolate or have a constant eccentricity. Other relevant physical quantities like the rotation velocity, the net orbital and vertical frequency due to the halo and an exponential disc of finite thickness embedded in it are obtained. We apply this to the kinematical origin of Galactic warp, and show that a prolate-shaped halo is not conducive to making long-lived warps - contrary to what has been proposed in the literature. The results for a prolate mass distribution with a variable axis ratio obtained are general, and can be applied to other astrophysical systems, such as prolate bars, for a more realistic treatment.

In the present study, high strength bulk ultrafine-grained titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V bars were successfully processed using multi-pass warm rolling. Ti-6Al-4V bars of 12 mm diameter and several metres long were processed by multi-pass warm rolling at 650 degrees C, 700 degrees C and 750 degrees C. The highest achieved mechanical properties for Ti-6Al-4V in as rolled condition were yield strength 1191 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1299 MPa having an elongation of 10% when the rolling temperature was 650 degrees C. The concurrent evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied using optical microscopy, electron back scattered diffraction and x-ray diffraction. The significant improvement in mechanical properties has been attributed to the ultrafine-grained microstructure as well as the morphology of alpha and beta phases in the warm rolled specimens. The warm rolling of Ti-6Al-4V leads to formation of < 10 (1) over bar0 >alpha//RD fibre texture. This study shows that multi-pass warm rolling has potential to eliminate the costly and time consuming heat treatment steps for small diameter bar products, as the solution treated and aged (STA) properties are achievable in the as rolled condition itself.
