O presente estudo analisou a implantação e a prática educativa do trabalho da missionária metodista norte-americana Martha Hite Watts na virada do século XIX e início do século XX, na cidade de Piracicaba, situada no estado de São Paulo. Os eixos de análise para interpretar as interfaces históricas do período baseiam-se em três aspectos: gênero, educação e missão. Martha Watts, é considerada a primeira educadora metodista no Brasil. Sua atuação se deu a partir de 1881, na cidade de Piracicaba, onde fundou o Colégio Piracicabano, que permanece em funcionamento até o presente momento. Sua experiência educacional foi relevante para o desempenho das escolas metodistas ao adotar uma pedagogia inovadora, nos moldes dos países europeus e de sua terra natal. No Brasil do final do século XIX, Martha Watts mostrou determinação ao enfrentar as diferenças de uma nova cultura e novo ambiente com hábitos, gestos e palavras estranhas para ela. O estudo procurou, a partir do diálogo com as cartas deixadas pela missionária, contribuir para a linha de pesquisa em História da Educação Brasileira. A obra da missionária Martha Watts se configura como um valioso legado para o estudo da História da Educação, História das Mulheres e Gênero.(AU)

As a result of exclusionary tactics, social, cultural or economic disadvantage or disability, vast numbers of pupils have poor educational experiences and are either marginalised or demonised due to 'difficult differences'. In the context of Martha Nussbaum's capabilities approach, where she suggests that we ought to be who we want to be, this paper addresses intellectual disability, inclusion and inclusive education. It proposes that care, compassion, creativity and ethics are critical in understanding the education for all children and young people, rather than necessarily pedagogical process. In addition, it suggests that learning should take place within and through relationships and that these relationships are important in developing a healthy sense of self. Therefore politically, rather than following a path of blame whether it is the dysfunctional family, the deficit child or the economically deprived nation, this paper says that we require socially just practices, compassion and care as fundamental to human development, social inclusion and inclusive education. Ultimately, education is failing a large sum of children and young people and therefore needs to be radically reconsidered.

During the 2004 growing season, five raspberry cultivars were evaluated in terms of their susceptibility to the raspberry cane midge (Resseliella theobaldi Barnes). The trial was carried out at Berkenye, Nógrád County, Hungary. The cultivars evaluated were ‘Rubaca’ from Germany, ‘Fertődi Zamatos’ from Hungary, ‘Tulameen’ from Canada, and ‘Autumn Bliss’ and ‘Golden Bliss’ from the United Kingdom. Every other week, twenty-five split primocanes of each cultivar were randomly collected for laboratory examination. Data recorded for each cultivar included the mean number of larvae, the mean split length, and the mean extent of bark peeling per primocane. Pearson’s linear correlation coefficients were calculated for the correlations between the annual mean number of larvae per primocane on the one hand, and the annual cumulative mean split length per primocane and annual mean extent of bark peeling per primocane on the other hand. There was a weak correlation between annual mean number of larvae and annual cumulative mean split length, and a stronger correlation between annual mean number of larvae and annual mean extent of bark peeling. Annual mean number of larvae per primocane and annual mean extent of bark peeling per primocane were both highest in ‘Rubaca’, which means that the number of larvae per cane largely depends on the extent of stem peeling, although longitudinal splitting may also play a role. Therefore, cultivars with hardly any bark peeling and few and small longitudinal splits can be presumed to be less susceptible to infestation by the raspberry cane midge. Using these criteria, the least susceptible of the five cultivars evaluated would be ‘Tulameen’ and ‘Fertődi Zamatos’. Further research is needed to confirm this conclusion and to gather data on other factors which affect cultivar choice for new plantations, including winter hardiness, and susceptibility to cane diseases.
