Mg-Al hydrotalcite coatings have been grown on alumina via a novel alkali- and nitrate-free impregnation route and subsequent calcination and hydrothermal treatment. The resulting Mg-HT/AlO catalysts significantly outperform conventional bulk hydrotalcites prepared via co-precipitation in the transesterification of C-C triglycerides for fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) production, with rate enhancements increasing with alkyl chain length. This promotion is attributed to improved accessibility of bulky triglycerides to active surface base sites over the higher area alumina support compared to conventional hydrotalcites wherein many active sites are confined within the micropores. © 2014 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Hierarchical macroporous-mesoporous SBA-15 silicas have been synthesised via dual-templating routes employing liquid crystalline surfactants and polystyrene beads. These offer high surface areas and well-defined, interconnecting macro- and mesopore networks with respective narrow size distributions around 300 nm and 3-5 nm for polystyrene:tetraethoxysilane ratios ≥2:1. Subsequent functionalisation with propylsulfonic acid yields the first organized, macro-mesoporous solid acid catalyst. The enhanced mass transport properties of these new bi-modal solid acid architectures confer significant rate enhancements in the transesterification of bulky glyceryl trioctanoate, and esterification of long chain palmitic acid, over pure mesoporous analogues. This paves the way to the wider application of hierarchical catalysts in biofuel synthesis and biomass conversion. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dwindling oil reserves and growing concerns over CO2 emissions and associated climate change are driving the utilisation of renewable feedstocks as alternative, sustainable fuel sources. While rising oil prices are improving the commercial feasibility of biodiesel production, many current processes still employ homogeneous acid and/or base catalysts to transform plant or algae oil into the fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) components of biodiesel. Fuel purification requires energy intensive aqueous quench and neutralization steps, thus the rational design of new high activity catalysts is required to deliver biodiesel as a major player in the 21st century sustainable energy portfolio. Advances in the development of heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel synthesis require catalysts with pore architectures designed to improve the accessibility of bulky viscous reactants typical of plant oils. Here we discuss how improvements to active site accessibility and catalyst activity in transesterification or esterification reactions can be achieved either by designing hierarchical pore networks or by pore expansion and use of interconnected pore architectures.

Fatigue crack growth rate tests have been performed on Nimonic AP1, a powder formed Ni-base superalloy, in air and vacuum at room temperature. These show that threshold values are higher, and near-threshold (faceted) crack growth rates are lower, in vacuum than in air, although at high growth rates, in the “structure-insensitive” regime, R-ratio and a dilute environment have little effect. Changing the R-ratio from 0.1 to 0.5 in vacuum does not alter near-threshold crack growth rates very much, despite more extensive secondary cracking being noticeable at R= 0.5. In vacuum, rewelding occurs at contact points across the crack as ΔK falls. This leads to the production of extensive fracture surface damage and bulky fretting debris, and is thought to be a significant contributory factor to the observed increase in threshold values.

Light curable dimethacrylate resin composites undergo free radical photopolymerisation in response to blue light (wavelength 450-500 nm) and may offer superior handling and setting characteristics for novel hard tissue repair materials. The current investigation aims to determine the optimum formulation of bisphenol-A glycidyl methacrylate and triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (bisGMA/TEGDMA) or urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA)/TEGDMA resin mixtures and the effect of Bioglass incorporation on the rate of polymerisation (RP), degree of conversion (DC) and flexural strength (FS) of light-curable filled resin composites (FRCs). Experimental photoactive resins containing a range of bisGMA, UDMA and TEGDMA ratios and/or filled with non-silanised irregular or spherical 45S5-Bioglass (50 μm; 5-40 wt%) and/or silanised silicate glass filler particulates (0.7 μm; 50-70 wt%) were tested. RP and DC were analysed in real-time using nearinfrared spectroscopy. FS of resins and FRCs were determined using three-point flexural strength tests. UDMA/TEGDMA resins exhibited increased DC compared with bisGMA/TEGDMA resins (p<0.05). The addition of spherical particles of Bioglass had a detrimental effect on the FS (p>0.05), whereas they increased DC of UDMA/TEGDMA resins (p<0.05). Addition of irregular shaped Bioglass particles increased the FS of UDMA/TEGDMA resins up to 20 wt% Bioglass (p<0.05). The flexibility and strength conferred by the urethane group in UDMA may result in enhanced physical and mechanical properties compared with conventional resins containing bulky (bisGMA) molecules. Addition of 45S5-Bioglass with specific filler content, size and morphology resulted in enhanced mechanical and physical properties of UDMA/TEGDMA composites. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The combination of dwindling oil reserves and growing concerns over carbon dioxide emissions and associated climate change is driving the urgent development of routes to utilize renewable feedstocks as sustainable sources of fuels. Catalysis has a rich history of facilitating energy efficient selective molecular transformations and contributes to 90% of chemical manufacturing processes and to more than 20% of all industrial products. In a post-petroleum era catalysis will be central to overcoming the engineering and scientific barriers to economically feasible routes to bio-fuels. This article will highlight some of the recent developments in the development of solid acid and base catalysts for the transesterification of oils to biodiesel. Particular attention will be paid to the challenges faced when developing new catalysts and importance of considering the design of pore architectures to improve in-pore diffusion of bulky substrates. © 2011 Materials Research Society.

Novel macroporous solid bases have been developed as alternative clean technologies to existing commercial homogeneous catalysts for the production of biodiesel from triglycerides; the latter suffer process disadvantages including complex separation and associated saponification and engine corrosion, and are unsuitable for continuous operation. To this end, tuneable macroporous MgAl hydrotalcites have been prepared by an alkali-free route and characterised by TGA, XRD, SEM and XPS. The macropore architecture improves diffusion of bulky triglyceride molecules to the active base sites, increasing activity. Lamellar and macroporous hydrotalcites will be compared for the transesterification of both model and plant oil feedstocks, and structure-reactivity relations identified.

There is a pressing need for sustainable transportation fuels to combat both climate change and dwindling fossil fuel reserves. Biodiesel, synthesised from non-food plant (e.g., Jatropha curcas) or algal crops is one possible solution, but its energy efficient production requires design of new solid catalysts optimized for the bulky triglyceride and fatty acid feedstocks. Here we report on the synthesis of hierarchical macroporous-mesoporous silica and alumina architectures, and their subsequent functionalization by propylsulfonic acid groups or alkaline earth oxides to generate novel solid acid and base catalysts. These materials possess high surface areas and well-defined, interconnected macro-mesopore networks with respective narrow pore size distributions tuneable around 300 nm and 5 nm. Their high conductivity and improved mass transport characteristics enhance activity towards transesterification of bulky tricaprylin and palmitic acid esterification, over mesoporous analogues. This opens the way to the wider application of hierarchical catalysts in biofuel synthesis and biomass conversion.

The combination of dwindling oil reserves and growing concerns over carbon dioxide emissions and associated climate change is driving the urgent development of clean, sustainable energy supplies. Biodiesel is a non-toxic and biodegradable fuel, with the potential for closed CO2 cycles and thus vastly reduced carbon footprints compared with petroleum. However, current manufacturing routes employing soluble catalysts are very energy inefficient, with their removal necessitating an energy intensive separation to purify biodiesel, which in turn produces copious amounts of contaminated aqueous waste. The introduction of non-food based feedstocks and technical advances in heterogeneous catalyst and reactor design are required to ensure that biodiesel remains a key player in the renewable energy sector for the 21st century. Here we report on the development of tuneable solid acid and bases for biodiesel synthesis, which offer several process advantages by eliminating the quenching step and allowing operation in a continuous reactor. Significant progress has been made towards developing tuneable solid base catalysts for biodiesel synthesis, including Li/CaO [1], Mg-Al hydrotalcites [2] and calcined dolomite [3] which exhibit excellent activity for triglyceride transesterification. However, the effects of solid base strength on catalytic activity in biodiesel synthesis remains poorly understood, hampering material optimisation and commercial exploitation. To improve our understanding of factors influencing solid base catalysts for biodiesel synthesis, we have applied a simple spectroscopic method for the quantitative determination of surface basicity which is independent of adsorption probes. Such measurements reveal how the morphology and basicity of MgO nanocrystals correlate with their biodiesel synthesis activity [4]. While diverse solid acids and bases have been investigated for TAG transesterification, the micro and mesoporous nature of catalyst systems investigated to date are not optimal for the diffusion of bulky and viscous C16-C18 TAGs typical of plant oils. The final part of this presentation will address the benefits of designing porous networks comprising interconnected hierarchical macroporous and mesoporous channels (Figure 1) to enhance mass-transport properties of viscous plant oils during biodiesel synthesis [5]. The quest for sustainable sources of fuels and chemicals to meet the demands of a rapidly rising global population represents one of this century's grand challenges. Biomass offers the most readily implemented, and low cost, solution for transportation fuels, and the only non-petroleum route to organic molecules for the manufacture of bulk, fine and speciality chemicals and polymers. Chemical processing of such biomass-derived building blocks requires catalysts compatible with hydrophilic, bulky substrates to facilitate the selective deoxygenation of highly functional bio-molecules to their target products. This chapter addresses the challenges associated with carbohydrate utilisation as a sustainable feedstock, highlighting innovations in catalyst and process design that are needed to deliver high-value chemicals from biomass-derived building blocks. © 2014 Woodhead Publishing Limited. Blends of PET with the different commercial co(ter)polymer compatibilisers were prepared and the effect of their glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) content and viscosity on the blend properties was determined. The efficiency of compatibilisation of the commercial co(ter)polymer in the ternary blends was examined and compared. For all the ternary blends (PET/EPR/co(ter)polymer, the PET content was fixed at 70 wt% of the total weight of the blends. Higher compatibilisation effect was found in PET/EPR blends compatibilised with the commercial copolymer ethylene glycidyl methacrylate (E-GMA8(5)) containing 8% GMA and MFI = 5 (g/10min) was achieved as reflected in the observed higher elongation at break when compared to corresponding blends compatibilised with the methyl acrylate containing terpolymer ethylene methyl acrylate glycidyl methacrylate EM-GMA8(6) containing 8% GMA and MFI = 6 (g/10min). The presence of methyl acrylate ester groups in the commercial terpolymer EM-GMA (containing similar amount of GMA and same MFI) resulted in low level of compatibilisation due to the possibility of a higher extent of branching and crosslinking resulting from the presence of the ester groups and this would be responsible for the observed lower elongation, and the less favourable morphology observed. Further, the more bulky structure of the terpolymer compared to the copolymer would give rise to a more difficult migration to the interface, thus lowering the efficiency of compatibilisation. However, the morphology of both blends compatibilised with either the terpolymer or the copolymer were not significantly different.

Electrolytic capacitors are extensively used in power converters but they are bulky, unreliable, and have short lifetimes. This paper proposes a new capacitor-free high step-up dc-dc converter design for renewable energy applications such as photovoltaics (PVs) and fuel cells. The primary side of the converter includes three interleaved inductors, three main switches, and an active clamp circuit. As a result, the input current ripple is greatly reduced, eliminating the necessity for an input capacitor. In addition, zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved during switching transitions for all active switches, so that switching losses can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, a three-phase modular structure and six pulse rectifiers are employed to reduce the output voltage ripple. Since magnetic energy stored in the leakage inductance is recovered, the reverse-recovery issue of the diodes is effectively solved. The proposed converter is justified by simulation and experimental tests on a 1-kW prototype.

A novel highly efficient, fiber-compatible spectrally encoded imaging (SEI) system using a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The TFG serves as an in-fiber lateral diffraction element, eliminating the need for bulky and lossy free-space diffraction gratings in conventional SEI systems. Under proper polarization control, due to the strong tilted reflection, the 45° TFG offers a diffraction efficiency as high as 93.5%. Our new design significantly reduces the volume of the SEI system and improves energy efficiency and system stability. As a proof-ofprinciple experiment, spectrally encoded imaging of a customer-designed sample (9.6 mm x 3.0 mm) using the TFG-based system is demonstrated. The lateral resolution of the SEI system is measured to be 42 μm in our experiment.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop new techniques to generate segmental assessments of body composition based on Segmental Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (SBIA). An equally important consideration was the design, simulation, development, and the software and hardware integration of the SBIA system. This integration was carried out with a Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) microcontroller that analyzed the measurements obtained from segments of the body, and provided full body and segmental Fat Free Mass (FFM) and Fat Mass (FM) percentages. Also, the issues related to the estimate of the body's composition in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) were addressed and investigated. This investigation demonstrated that the SBIA methodology provided accurate segmental body composition measurements. Disabled individuals are expected to benefit from these SBIA evaluations, as they are non-invasive methods, suitable for paralyzed individuals. The SBIA VLSI system may replace bulky, non flexible electronic modules attached to human bodies. ^
