The Numerical INJection Analysis (NINJA) project is a collaborative effort between members of the numerical relativity and gravitational-wave (GW) astrophysics communities. The purpose of NINJA is to study the ability to detect GWs emitted from merging binary black holes (BBH) and recover their parameters with next-generation GW observatories. We report here on the results of the second NINJA project, NINJA-2, which employs 60 complete BBH hybrid waveforms consisting of a numerical portion modelling the late inspiral, merger, and ringdown stitched to a post-Newtonian portion modelling the early inspiral. In a 'blind injection challenge' similar to that conducted in recent Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo science runs, we added seven hybrid waveforms to two months of data recoloured to predictions of Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) and Advanced Virgo (AdV) sensitivity curves during their first observing runs. The resulting data was analysed by GW detection algorithms and 6 of the waveforms were recovered with false alarm rates smaller than 1 in a thousand years. Parameter-estimation algorithms were run on each of these waveforms to explore the ability to constrain the masses, component angular momenta and sky position of these waveforms. We find that the strong degeneracy between the mass ratio and the BHs' angular momenta will make it difficult to precisely estimate these parameters with aLIGO and AdV. We also perform a large-scale Monte Carlo study to assess the ability to recover each of the 60 hybrid waveforms with early aLIGO and AdV sensitivity curves. Our results predict that early aLIGO and AdV will have a volume-weighted average sensitive distance of 300 Mpc (1 Gpc) for 10M circle dot + 10M circle dot (50M circle dot + 50M circle dot) BBH coalescences. We demonstrate that neglecting the component angular momenta in the waveform models used in matched-filtering will result in a reduction in sensitivity for systems with large component angular momenta. This reduction is estimated to be up to similar to 15% for 50M circle dot + 50M circle dot BBH coalescences with almost maximal angular momenta aligned with the orbit when using early aLIGO and AdV sensitivity curves.

Electronic properties of disordered binary alloys are studied via the calculation of the average Density of States (DOS) in two and three dimensions. We propose a new approximate scheme that allows for the inclusion of local order effects in finite geometries and extrapolates the behavior of infinite systems following finite-size scaling ideas. We particularly investigate the limit of the Quantum Site Percolation regime described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian. This limit was chosen to probe the role of short range order (SRO) properties under extreme conditions. The method is numerically highly efficient and asymptotically exact in important limits, predicting the correct DOS structure as a function of the SRO parameters. Magnetic field effects can also be included in our model to study the interplay of local order and the shifted quantum interference driven by the field. The average DOS is highly sensitive to changes in the SRO properties and striking effects are observed when a magnetic field is applied near the segregated regime. The new effects observed are twofold: there is a reduction of the band width and the formation of a gap in the middle of the band, both as a consequence of destructive interference of electronic paths and the loss of coherence for particular values of the magnetic field. The above phenomena are periodic in the magnetic flux. For other limits that imply strong localization, the magnetic field produces minor changes in the structure of the average DOS. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reactivity and polymerization kinetics behavior of a model dental adhesive resin with water-soluble initiator systems. Methods. A monomer blend based on Bis-GMA, TEGDMA and HEMA was used as a model dental adhesive resin, which was polymerized using a thioxanthone type (QTX) as a photoinitiator. Binary and ternary photoinitiator systems were formulated using 1 mol% of each initiator. The co-initiators used in this study were ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB), diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (BARB), p-toluenesulfinic acid and sodium salt hydrate (SULF). Absorption spectra of the initiators were measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and the photon absorption energy (PAE) was calculated. The binary system camphorquinone (CQ)/amine was used as a reference group (control). Twelve groups were tested in triplicate. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the polymerization reaction during the photoactivation period to obtain the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (R-p(max)) profile of the model resin. Results. In the analyzed absorption profiles, the absorption spectrum of QTX is almost entirely localized in the UV region, whereas that of CQ is in the visible range. With respect to binary systems, CQ + EDAB exhibited higher DC and R-p(max) values. In formulations that contained ternary initiator systems, the group CQ + QTX + EDAB was the only one of the investigated experimental groups that exhibited an R-p(max) value greater than that of CQ + EDAB. The groups QTX + EDAB + DPIHFP and QTX + DPIHFP + SULF exhibited values similar to those of CQ + EDAB with respect to the final DC; however, they also exhibited lower reactivity. Significance. Water-soluble initiator systems should be considered as alternatives to the widely used CQ/amine system in dentin adhesive formulations. (C) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Aims. Our goal is to study the circumstellar environment associated with each component of the wide intermediate-mass pre-main sequence binary system PDS 144 using broadband polarimetry. Methods. We present near-infrared (NIR) linear polarimetric observations of PDS 144 gathered with the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter along with the CamIV infrared camera at the Observatorio do Pico dos Dias (OPD). In addition, we re-analyzed OPD archive optical polarization to separate the binary and estimate the interstellar polarization using foreground stars. Results. After discounting the interstellar component, we found that both stars of the binary system are intrinsically polarized. The polarization vectors at optical and NIR bands of both components are aligned with the local magnetic field and the jet axis. These findings indicate an interplay between the interstellar magnetic field and the formation of the binary system. We also found that the PDS 144N is less polarized than its southern companion in the optical. However, in the NIR PDS 144N is more polarized. Our polarization data can only be explained by high inclinations (i greater than or similar to 80 degrees) for the disks of both members. In particular, comparisons of our NIR data with young stellar objects disk models suggest predominantly small grains in the circumstellar environment of PDS 144N. In spite of the different grain types in each component, the infrared spectral indexes indicate a coeval system. We also found evidence of coplanarity between the disks.

The immobilization of metal nanoparticles in magnetic responsive solids allows the easy, fast, and clean separation of catalysts; however, the efficiency of this separation process depends on a strong metalsupport interaction. This interaction can be enhanced by functionalizing the support surface with amino groups. Our catalyst support contains an inner core of magnetite that enables the magnetic separation from liquid systems and an external surface of silica suitable for further modification with organosilanes. We report herein that a magnetically recoverable amino-functionalized support captured iridium species from liquid solutions and produced a highly active hydrogenation catalyst with negligible metal leaching. An analogous Ir0 catalyst prepared with use of a nonfunctionalized support shows a higher degree of metal leaching into the liquid products. The catalytic performance in the hydrogenation of alkenes is compared with that of Rh and Pt catalysts.

Dapsone (DAP) is a synthetic sulfone drug with bacteriostatic activity, mainly against Mycobacterium leprae. In this study we have investigated the interactions of DAP with cyclodextrins, 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP beta CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta CD), in the presence and absence of water-soluble polymers, in order to improve its solubility and bioavailability. Solid systems DAP/HP beta CD and DAP/beta CD, in the presence or absence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K30) or hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), were prepared. The binary and ternary systems were evaluated and characterized by SEM, DSC, XRD and NMR analysis as well as phase solubility assays, in order to investigate the interactions between DAP and the excipients in aqueous solution. This study revealed that inclusion complexes of DAP and cyclodextrins (HP beta CD and beta CD) can be produced in order to improve DAP solubility and bioavailability in the presence or absence of polymers (PVP K30 and HPMC). The more stable inclusion complex was obtained with HP beta CD, and consequently HP beta CD was more efficient in improving DAP solubility than beta CD, and the addition of polymers had no influence on DAP solubility or on the stability of the DAP/CDs complexes.

OSCILLATORY DYNAMICS IN SYSTEMS CONTAINING BROMATE AND 1,4-CYCLOHEXANEDIONE IN ACIDIC MEDIA. I. THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE. We present in this work the influence of temperature on the dynamics of homogeneous chemical systems containing bromate and 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD) in acidic media. In particular, the following systems were studied: bromate/1,4-CHD/acid, bromate/1,4-CHD/ferroin/acid and bromate/1,4-CHD/trisbipyridine ruthenium/acid. Investigations were carried out by means of an electrochemical probe, at five temperatures between 5 and 45 degrees C. Activation energies (E-a) were estimated in different ways for the pre-oscillatory and oscillatory regimes. In any case, the E-a was found to depend on the catalyst, composition and initial concentrations. In addition, it was observed that ferroin and trisbipyridine ruthenium act as catalysts only during the transition between the induction period and oscillatory regime.

Binary and ternary systems of Ni2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ were investigated at initial metal concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mM as competitive adsorbates using Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris as biosorbents. The experimental results were evaluated in terms of equilibrium sorption capacity and metal removal efficiency and fitted to the multi-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The pseudo second order model of Ho and McKay described well the adsorption kinetics, and the FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed metal binding to both biomasses. Ni2+ and Zn2+ interference on Pb2+ sorption was lower than the contrary, likely due to biosorbent preference to Pb. In general, the higher the total initial metal concentration, the lower the adsorption capacity. The results of this study demonstrated that dry biomass of C. vulgaris behaved as better biosorbent than A. platensis and suggest its use as an effective alternative sorbent for metal removal from wastewater. In multi-label classification, examples can be associated with multiple labels simultaneously. The task of learning from multi-label data can be addressed by methods that transform the multi-label classification problem into several single-label classification problems. The binary relevance approach is one of these methods, where the multi-label learning task is decomposed into several independent binary classification problems, one for each label in the set of labels, and the final labels for each example are determined by aggregating the predictions from all binary classifiers. However, this approach fails to consider any dependency among the labels. Aiming to accurately predict label combinations, in this paper we propose a simple approach that enables the binary classifiers to discover existing label dependency by themselves. An experimental study using decision trees, a kernel method as well as Naive Bayes as base-learning techniques shows the potential of the proposed approach to improve the multi-label classification performance.

[EN]Experimental solubility data are presented for a set of binary systems composed of ionic liquids (IL) derived from pyridium, with the tetrafluoroborate anion, and normal alcohols ranging from ethanol to decanol, in the temperature interval of 275 420 K, at atmospheric pressure. For each case, the miscibility curve and the upper critical solubility temperature (UCST) values are presented. The effects of the ILs on the behavior of solutions with alkanols are analyzed, paying special attention to the pyridine derivatives, and considering a series of structural characteristics of the compounds involved.
