Transforming meteorological data into linked data

This paper describes the process followed in order to make some of the public meterological data from the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET, Spanish Meteorological Office) available as Linked Data. The method followed has been already used to publish geographical, statistical, and leisure data. The data selected for publication are generated every ten minutes by the 250 automatic stations that belong to AEMET and that are deployed across Spain. These data are available as spreadsheets in the AEMET data catalog, and contain more than twenty types of measurements per station. Spreadsheets are retrieved from the website, processed with Python scripts, transformed to RDF according to an ontology network about meteorology that reuses the W3C SSN Ontology, published in a triple store and visualized in maps with Map4rdf.

OrCGDB: a database of genes involved in oral cancer

The Oral Cancer Gene Database (OrCGDB; http://www.tumor-gene.org/Oral/oral.html) was developed to provide the biomedical community with easy access to the latest information on the genes involved in oral cancer. The information is stored in a relational database and accessed through a WWW interface. The OrCGDB is organized by gene name, which is linked to information describing properties of the gene. This information is stored as a collection of findings (‘facts’) that are entered by the database curator in a semi-structured format from information in primary publications using a WWW interface. These facts include causes of oncogenic activation, chromosomal localization of the gene, mutations associated with the gene, the biochemical identity and activity of the gene product, synonyms for the gene name and a variety of clinical information. Each fact is associated with a MEDLINE citation. The user can search the OrCGDB by gene name or by entering a textword. The OrCGDB is part of a larger WWW-based tumor gene database and represents a new approach to catalog and display the research literature.

Azudes y acueductos del sistema de riego tradicional de la Vega Baja del Segura (Alicante, España)

En el presente trabajo se describen y analizan las principales obras hidráulicas del sistema de riego tradicional de la comarca de la Vega Baja del Segura, concretamente, los azudes y los acueductos. Los azudes de toma, construidos en el cauce del río Segura, representan el inicio del sistema, desde donde parte una extensa y compleja red de acueductos constituida por acequias y azarbes, como elementos fundamentales, que distribuyen el agua para el regadío. En este estudio se ha llevado a cabo una amplia y profunda investigación documental, tomado datos de campo y captado imágenes in situ que, junto con los diagramas aportados, resultan imprescindibles para comprender la magnitud del sistema. Los resultados obtenidos han servido no sólo para catalogar y caracterizar los elementos que integran el sistema hidráulico del regadío tradicional de la Vega Baja del Segura, sino también para poner de manifiesto un ejemplo real de optimización de recursos hídricos en una zona del sureste peninsular español de escasa e irregular pluviometría. Asimismo, el estudio efectuado revela un sistema de riego sumamente eficiente desde un punto de vista cuantitativo y no tanto desde el cualitativo, debido a la presencia, entre otros contaminantes, de altas concentraciones de sales.

Republished and sold by W. Norman, book and chart-seller ca. 1800. Scale [ca. 1:25,500]. Covers Boston Harbor and adjacent lands. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows coastal features such as rocks, channels, points, coves, islands, and more. Depths are shown by soundings and shading. It also shows land features such as roads, drainage, and more. Relief is shown pictorially and by hachures. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps of Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates (1755-1922), scales, and purposes. The digitized selection includes maps of: the state, Massachusetts counties, town surveys, coastal features, real property, parks, cemeteries, railroads, roads, public works projects, etc.
