The article explores the conceptual complexity and apparent contradictions in the language of mathematics and suggests ways to handle these problems. Mathematics, as described the author, is a formal, artificially constructed language. One problem arises from the changes of gradient and rates of change of gradient, continuous functions. Conceptual conflicts also arise when least upperbounds and greatest lower-bounds in discussing sequences and series, convergence and limits are considered.

The aim of this work is to improve the quality of castings by minimizing defects and scrap through the analysis of the data generated by High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) Machines using computational intelligence techniques. Casting is a complex process that is affected by the interdependence of die casting process parameters on each other such that changes in one parameter results in changes in other parameters. Computational intelligence techniques have the potential to model accurately this complex relationship. The project has the potential to generate optimal configurations for HPDC Machines and explain the relationships between die casting process parameters.

The aim of this study was to assess how demographic variables and personal values are related to people's knowledge and cognitive and behavioural responses towards a major drug recall event that occurred in Australia in 2003. For this purpose, a survey was sent out in 2003 to 1000 households in Victoria, Australia. Households had been randomly selected from the electoral role. A total of 415 respondents participated. Results indicated that higher socioeconomic status was related to better information about the recall event and more trust in manufacturers. Respondents who held traditional or naturalistic values were likely to trust that faults in the system would be regulated by the government or consumers themselves. Parents and older respondents were more likely to be critical of the Therapeutic Goods Administration which co-ordinated the recall. Parental status, education and values were related to subsequent changes in respondents' use of complementary medicines. In light of the worth of the health supplement industry to the Australian economy, the results of this survey suggest that the Therapeutic Goods Administration should adopt a more transparent and accountable role towards the public.

Porous Ti-50.5at.%Ni shape memory alloy (SMA) samples with a range of  porosities were prepared by spacer sintering. The porous structure of the alloy was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase constituents of the porous TiNi alloy were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy was investigated using loading–unloading compression tests. Results indicate that the porous TiNi alloy exhibits superelasticity and the recoverable strain by the superelasticity decreases with the increase of porosity. After a prestrain of 7%, the superelastically recovered strains for the porous TiNi alloy samples with porosities of 46%, 59%, 69% and 77% are 2.0%, 1.8%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively. The pores in the TiNi alloy samples cause stress/strain concentration, as well as crack initiation, which adversely affect the shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy.

In this paper, we consider daily financial data of a collection of different stock market indices, exchange rates, and interest rates, and we analyze their multi-scaling properties by estimating a simple specification of the Markov-switching multifractal (MSM) model. In order to see how well the estimated model captures the temporal dependence of the data, we estimate and compare the scaling exponents H(q) (for q=1,2) for both empirical data and simulated data of the MSM model. In most cases the multifractal model appears to generate ‘apparent’ long memory in agreement with the empirical scaling laws.

Dietary fatty acids are known to modulate fatty acid metabolism in fish. However, the innate capability of fish to bioconvert short chain fatty acids to health promoting long chain fatty acids (LCPUFA) is insufficient to compensate for a reduced dietary intake. While many studies have focused on the dietary regulation of the fatty acid bioconversion pathways, there is little known regarding the effects of the dietary levels of C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on fatty acid metabolism. Here, we show a greater degree of apparent enzyme activity (Δ-6 desaturase) in fish fed a diet with higher amounts of dietary C18 PUFA. In particular, fish receiving high amounts of dietary C18 PUFA had a greater amount of Δ-6 desaturase activity acting on 18:3n-3 than 18:2n-6. However, with the gradual reduction of dietary C18 PUFA there was a shift in substrate preference of Δ-6 desaturase from 18:3n-3 to 18:2n-6. This information will provide valuable insight for the implementation of low fish oil diets, which permit the maintenance of n-3 LCPUFA levels in farmed Murray cod.

In this article, we report on the preparation and cell culture performance of a novel fibrous matrix that has an interbonded fiber architecture, excellent pore interconnectivity, and controlled pore size and porosity. The fibrous matrices were prepared by combining melt-bonding of short synthetic fibers with a template leaching technique. The microcomputed tomography and scanning electron microscopy imaging verified that the fibers in the matrix were highly bonded, forming unique isotropic pore architectures. The average pore size and porosity of the fibrous matrices were controlled by the fiber/template ratio. The matrices having the average pore size of 120, 207, 813, and 994 mm, with the respective porosity of 73%, 88%, 96%, and 97%, were investigated. The applicability of the matrix as a three-dimensional (3D) tissue scaffold for cell culture was demonstrated with two cell lines, rat skin fibroblast and Chinese hamster ovary, and the influences of the matrix porosity and surface area on the cell culture performance were examined. Both cell lines grew successfully in the matrices, but they showed different preferences in pore size and porosity. Compared with two-dimensional tissue culture plates, the cell number on 3D fibrous matrices was increased by 97.27% for the Chinese hamster ovary cells and 49.46% for the fibroblasts after 21 days of culture. The fibroblasts in the matrices not only grew along the fiber surface but also bridged among the fibers, which was much different from those on two-dimensional scaffolds. Such an interbonded fibrous matrix may be useful for developing new fiber-based 3D tissue scaffolds for various cell culture applications.

Planning for resilience is the focus of many marine conservation programs and initiatives. These efforts aim to inform conservation strategies for marine regions to ensure they have inbuilt capacity to retain biological diversity and ecological function in the face of global environmental change – particularly changes in climate and resource exploitation. In the absence of direct biological and ecological information for many marine species, scientists are increasingly using spatially-explicit, predictive-modeling approaches. Through the improved access to multibeam sonar and underwater video technology these models provide spatial predictions of the most suitable regions for an organism at resolutions previously not possible. However, sensible-looking, well-performing models can provide very different predictions of distribution depending on which occurrence dataset is used. To examine this, we construct species distribution models for nine temperate marine sedentary fishes for a 25.7 km2 study region off the coast of southeastern Australia. We use generalized linear model (GLM), generalized additive model (GAM) and maximum entropy (MAXENT) to build models based on co-located occurrence datasets derived from two underwater video methods (i.e. baited and towed video) and fine-scale multibeam sonar based seafloor habitat variables. Overall, this study found that the choice of modeling approach did not considerably influence the prediction of distributions based on the same occurrence dataset. However, greater dissimilarity between model predictions was observed across the nine fish taxa when the two occurrence datasets were compared (relative to models based on the same dataset). Based on these results it is difficult to draw any general trends in regards to which video method provides more reliable occurrence datasets. Nonetheless, we suggest predictions reflecting the species apparent distribution (i.e. a combination of species distribution and the probability of detecting it). Consequently, we also encourage researchers and marine managers to carefully interpret model predictions.

Toxic prey warn their predators about their unprofitability with conspicuous colour patterns that are easily learned and remembered by predators if they are uniform within a population. I studied a variable, warningly-coloured poison frog in the wild and found that such variation in colours may be related to mating advantages, parental duties, microhabitat selection and different behavioural strategies.

Here we report a facile method for controlling the morphology and porosity of porous siloxane membranes through manipulation of the water content of precursor microemulsions. The polymerizable microemulsion precursors consisted of a methacrylate-terminated siloxane macromonomer (MTSM) as the oil phase, nonionic surfactant (Teric G9A8), water, and cosurfactant (isopropanol). Photo-polymerization of the oil phase in the parent microemulsion solutions resulted in polymeric solids, and subsequent removal of the extractable components yielded porous PDMS membranes. The pre-cured parent microemulsion solutions and post-cured polymers were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) while the nanostructures of extracted porous polymer membranes were characterized by SAXS, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry. The results indicated that nano- and micro-structures of the membranes could be modulated by the water content of the precursor microemulsions. Further, in situ photo-rheometry was used to follow the microemulsion polymerization process. The rate of polymerization and the mechanical properties of the resulting PDMS membranes also depend on the water content of precursor microemulsions. This study demonstrates a simple approach to the fabrication of a variety of novel porous PDMS membranes with controllable morphology and porosity.
