Densification characteristics of amorphous ZrO2-40 mol% Al2O3 powder with 3 to 15 mu m nominal particle size range, produced by spray pyrolysis, have been studied by conducting hot pressing experiments at 573, 723 and 873 K with uniaxial pressures of 250, 500 and 750 MPa. Most of the increase in relative density from the starting value of similar to 40% occurred during loading up to the desired pressure. The increments in density during 1 hour constant pressure dwells were less than 4% at all temperatures and pressure. Inter-particle bonding was not observed at 573 K. Correlation between the results with a viscous sintering model for hot pressing is not satisfactory for describing the behavior as normal viscous sintering.

The electrical switching behavior of amorphous GexSe35-xTe65 thin film samples has been studied in sandwich geometry of electrodes. It is found that these samples exhibit memory switching behavior, which is similar to that of bulk Ge-Se-Te glasses. As expected, the switching voltages of GexSe35-xTe65 thin film samples are lower compared to those of bulk samples. In both thin film amorphous and bulk glassy samples, the switching voltages are found to increase with the increase in Ge concentration, which is consistent with the increase in network connectivity with the addition of higher coordinated Ge atoms. A sharp increase is seen in the composition dependence of the switching fields of amorphous GexSe35-xTe65 films above x = 21, which can be associated with the stiffness transition. Further, the optical band gap of a-GexSe35-x Te-65 thin film samples, calculated from the absorption spectra, is found to show an increasing trend with the increase in Ge concentration, which is consistent with the variation of switching fields with composition. The increase in structural cross-linking with progressive addition of 4-fold coordinated Ge atoms is one of the main reasons for the observed increase in switching fields as well as band gaps of GexSe35-xTe65 samples. Janus structures have attracted a great deal of interest because of their fascinating properties and potential for applications. In this study, we demonstrate that hyperbranched polymers, bearing randomly placed docosyl (C22 alkyl segment) and PEG segments on their periphery, can readily reconfigure so as to segregate the alkyl and PEG segments, thereby generating Janus-type structures that we have termed Janus hybramers. DSC studies clearly reveal an endothermic transition that corresponds to the melting of the docosyl domains, while Langmuir isotherms demonstrate that these polymers form stable monolayers that appear to undergo a slight densification beyond a critical surface pressure; this suggested possible crystallization of the docosyl segments at the air-water interface. AFM studies of the transferred monolayers reveal various interesting aggregate morphologies at different surface pressures suggestive of island formation at the air-water interface; at the same time they also provided an estimate of the monolayer thickness. These Janus HBPs also form vesicles as evident from TEM and AFM studies; the AFM height of the deposited vesicles, as expected, was roughly 4 times that of the monolayer. SAXS studies revealed the formation of lamellar structures; the interlamellar spacing was largest when the relative mole fractions of docosyl and PEG segments were similar, but the spacing decreased when the mole fraction of either of these peripheral segments is substantially smaller; this suggested the possible presence of interdigitation within the domains of the minor component.

Amorphous thin film Ge15Te85-xSnx (1 <= x <= 5) and Ge17Te83-xSnx (1 <= x <= 4) switching devices have been deposited in sandwich geometry using a flash evaporation technique, with aluminum as the top and bottom electrodes. Electrical switching studies indicate that these films exhibit memory type electrical switching behavior. The switching fields for both the series of samples have been found to decrease with increase in Sn concentration, which confirms that the metallicity effect on switching fields/voltages, commonly seen in bulk glassy chalcogenides, is valid in amorphous chalcogenide thin films also. In addition, there is no manifestation of rigidity percolation in the composition dependence of switching fields of Ge15Te85-xSnx and Ge17Te83-xSnx amorphous thin film samples. The observed composition dependence of switching fields of amorphous Ge15Te85-xSnx and Ge17Te83-xSnx thin films has been understood on the basis of Chemically Ordered Network model. The optical band gap for these samples, calculated from the absorption spectra, has been found to exhibit a decreasing trend with increasing Sn concentration, which is consistent with the composition dependence of switching fields.

Two different experimental studies of polymer dynamics based on single-molecule fluorescence imaging have recently found evidence of heterogeneities in the widths of the putative tubes that surround filaments of F-actin during their motion in concentrated solution. In one J. Glaser, D. Chakraborty, K. Kroy, I. Lauter, M. Degawa, N. Kirchesner, B. Hoffmann, R. Merkel, and M. Giesen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037801 (2010)], the observations were explained in terms of the statistics of a worm-like chain confined to a potential determined self-consistently by a binary collision approximation, and in the other B. Wang, J. Guan, S. M. Anthony, S. C. Bae, K. S. Schweizer, and S. Granick, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 118301 (2010)], they were explained in terms of the scaling properties of a random fluid of thin rods. In this paper, we show, using an exact path integral calculation, that the distribution of the length-averaged transverse fluctuations of a harmonically confined weakly bendable rod (one possible realization of a semiflexible chain in a tube), is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data, although it is qualitatively different in analytic structure from the earlier theoretical predictions. We also show that similar path integral techniques can be used to obtain an exact expression for the time correlation function of fluctuations in the tube cross section. Herein, a new aromatic carboxylate ligand, namely, 4-(dipyridin-2-yl)aminobenzoic acid (HL), has been designed and employed for the construction of a series of lanthanide complexes (Eu3+ = 1, Tb3+ = 2, and Gd3+ = 3). Complexes of 1 and 2 were structurally authenticated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and were found to exist as infinite 1D coordination polymers with the general formulas {Eu(L)(3)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (1) and {Tb(L)(3)(H2O)]center dot(H2O)}(n) (2). Both compounds crystallize in monoclinic space group C2/c. The photophysical properties demonstrated that the developed 4-(dipyridin-2-yl)aminobenzoate ligand is well suited for the sensitization of Tb3+ emission (Phi(overall) = 64%) thanks to the favorable position of the triplet state ((3)pi pi*) of the ligand the energy difference between the triplet state of the ligand and the excited state of Tb3+ (Delta E) = (3)pi pi* - D-5(4) = 3197 cm(-1)], as investigated in the Gd3+ complex. On the other hand, the corresponding Eu3+ complex shows weak luminescence efficiency (Phi(overall) = 7%) due to poor matching of the triplet state of the ligand with that of the emissive excited states of the metal ion (Delta E = (3)pi pi* - D-5(0) = 6447 cm(-1)). Furthermore, in the present work, a mixed lanthanide system featuring Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions with the general formula {Eu0.5Tb0.5(L)(3)(H2O)(2)]}(n) (4) was also synthesized, and the luminescent properties were evaluated and compared with those of the analogous single-lanthanide-ion systems (1 and 2). The lifetime measurements for 4 strongly support the premise that efficient energy transfer occurs between Tb3+ and Eu3+ in a mixed lanthanide system (eta = 86%).

Electrical switching studies on amorphous Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) has been done to find their suitability for Phase Change Memory application; Bulk ingots in glassy form are prepared using conventional melt quenching technique and the thin films are coated using flash evaporation technique. Samples are found to exhibit memory type of electrical switching behavior. The switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx thin films have been found to decrease with increase in Sn concentration. The comparatively lower switching voltages of Ge17Te83−xSnx samples, make them suitable candidates for phase change memory applications.

Three pi-electron rich fluorescent supramolecular polymers (1-3) have been synthesized incorporating 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol groups in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling. They were characterized by multinuclear NMR (H-1, C-13), ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses 1 = 1( 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene; 2 = 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol) anthracene; 3 = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(2methyl- 3-butyn-2-ol) pyrene]. Single crystal structures of 1-3 indicated that the incorporation of hydroxy (-OH) groups on the peripheral of the fluorophores helps them to self-associate into an infinite supramolecular polymeric network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the adjacent discrete fluorophore units. All these compounds showed fluorescence characteristics in chloroform solution due to the extended pi-conjugation and were used as selective fluorescent sensors for the detection of electron deficient nitroaromatics. The changes in photophysical properties of fluorophores (1-3) upon complex formation with electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives were studied in chloroform solution by using fluorescence spectroscopy. All these fluorophores showed the largest quenching response with moderate selectivity for nitroaromatics over various other electron deficient/ rich aromatic compounds tested (Chart 1). Analysis of the fluorescence titration profile of 9,10-bis(2-methyl-3butyn- 2-ol) anthracene fluorophore (2) with 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene/ 2,4-dinitrotoluene provided evidence that this particular fluorophore detects nitroaromatics in the nanomolar range 2.0 ppb for TNT, 13.7 ppb for DNT]. Moreover, sharp visual color change was observed upon mixing nitroaromatic (DNT) with fluorophores (1-3) both in solution as well as in solid phase. Furthermore, the vapor-phase sensing study of thin film of fluorophores (1-3) showed efficient quenching responses for DNT and this sensing process is reproducible. Selective fluorescence quenching response including a sharp visual color change for nitroaromatics make these tested fluorophores (1-3) as potential sensors for nitroaromatic compounds with a detection limit of ppb level.

The development of scaffolds for neural tissue engineering application requires an understanding of cell adhesion, proliferation, and migration of neuronal cells. Considering the potential application of carbon as scaffold materials and the lack of understanding of compatibility of amorphous carbon with neuronal cells, the carbon-based materials in the forms of carbon films and continuous electrospun carbon nanofibers having average diameter of approximate to 200 nm are being investigated with or without ultraviolet (UV) and oxy-plasma (OP) treatments for cytocompatibility property using mouse Neuroblastoma (N2a) and rat Schwann cells (RT4-D6P2T). The use of Raman spectroscopy in combination with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction establishes the amorphous nature and surface-bonding characteristics of the studied carbon materials. Although both UV and OP treatments make carbon surfaces more hydrophilic, the cell viability of N2a cells is statistically more significant on OP treated fibers/films compared to UV fiber/film substrates after 4 days in culture. The electrospun carbon fibrous substrate provides the physical guidance to the cultured Schwann cells. Overall, the experimental results of this study demonstrate that the electrospun amorphous carbon nanofibrous scaffolds can be used as a suitable biomaterial substrate for supporting cell adhesion and proliferation of neuronal cells in the context of their applications as artificial nerve implants. This study deals with the influence of Er-doping level and thermal annealing on the optical properties of amorphous Ge-Ga-S thin films. Nominal compositions of (GeS2)(75)(Ga2S3)(25) doped with high concentrations of 2.1 and 2.4 mol% Er2S3 (corresponding to 1.2 and 1.4 at% Er, respectively) have been chosen for this work. The results have been related to those obtained for the un-doped samples. The values of the refractive index, the absorption coefficient and optical band gap have been determined from the transmittance data. It has been found that the optical band gap of un-doped and 2.1 mol% Er2S3-doped films slightly increases with annealing temperature, whereas at 2.4 mol% Er2S3-doping level it is decreased. The dependences of the optical parameters on the erbium concentration and effect of annealing in the temperature range of 100-200 degrees C have been evaluated and discussed in relation to possible structural changes.

Electrical switching studies on amorphous Si15Te75Ge10 thin film devices reveal the existence of two distinct, stable low-resistance, SET states, achieved by varying the electrical input to the device. The multiple resistance levels can be attributed to multi-stage crystallization, as observed from temperature dependant resistance studies. The devices are tested for their ability to be RESET with minimal resistance degradation; further, they exhibit a minimal drift in the SET resistance value even after several months of switching. Recent experimental measurements of the distribution P(w) of transverse chain fluctuations w in concentrated solutions of F-actin filaments B. Wang, J Guan, S. M. Anthony, S. C. Bae, K. S. Schweizer, and S. Granick, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 118301 (2010); J. Glaser, D. Chakraborty, K. Kroy, I. Lauter, M. Degawa, N. Kirchgessner, B. Hoffmann, R. Merkel, and M. Giesen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037801 (2010)] are shown to be well-fit to an expression derived from a model of the conformations of a single harmonically confined weakly bendable rod. The calculation of P(w) is carried out essentially exactly within a path integral approach that was originally applied to the study of one-dimensional randomly growing interfaces. Our results are generally as successful in reproducing experimental trends as earlier approximate results obtained from more elaborate many-chain treatments of the confining tube potential.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis has been carried out on the hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films deposited by DC, pulsed DC (PDC) and RF sputtering process to get insight regarding the total hydrogen concentration (C-H) in the films, configuration of hydrogen bonding, density of the films (decided by the vacancy and void incorporation) and the microstructure factor (R*) which varies with the type of sputtering carried out at the same processing conditions. The hydrogen incorporation is found to be more in RF sputter deposited films as compared to PDC and DC sputter deposited films. All the films were broadly divided into two regions namely vacancy dominated and void dominated regions. At low hydrogen dilutions the films are vacancy dominated and at high hydrogen dilutions they are void dominated. This demarcation is at C-H = 23 at.% H for RF, C-H = 18 at.% H for PDC and C-H = 14 at.% H for DC sputter deposited films. The microstructure structure factor R* is found to be as low as 0.029 for DC sputter deposited films at low C-H. For a given C-H, DC sputter deposited films have low R* as compared to PDC and RF sputter deposited films. Signature of dihydride incorporation is found to be more in DC sputter deposited films at low C-H.

Amorphous thin chalcogenide Si15Te85-xGex films (x: 5, 9, 10, 11, 12) are prepared by flash evaporation and the temperature dependence of resistance of these films has been studied in the temperature range 25-250 degrees C. All the compositions show a linear variation of resistance in this temperature range. Apart from the linear variation, a sharp reduction in resistance at one or at two distinct temperatures (T-TR1/T-TR2) is seen. Thin films annealed at these temperatures, when subjected to X-ray diffraction studies suggest that the dominant crystalline phase at T-TR1 and at T-TR2 is the same and the two dips are associated with varying levels of crystallization. This is also reflected in the atomic force microscopic (AFM) study. Further, the resistance of these two phases shows no drift when the films are annealed for varying lengths of time (10 min to 120 min) suggesting the stability of the phases.
