Since the last decade the problem of surface inspection has been receiving great attention from the scientific community, the quality control and the maintenance of products are key points in several industrial applications. The railway associations spent much money to check the railway infrastructure. The railway infrastructure is a particular field in which the periodical surface inspection can help the operator to prevent critical situations. The maintenance and monitoring of this infrastructure is an important aspect for railway association. That is why the surface inspection of railway also makes importance to the railroad authority to investigate track components, identify problems and finding out the way that how to solve these problems. In railway industry, usually the problems find in railway sleepers, overhead, fastener, rail head, switching and crossing and in ballast section as well. In this thesis work, I have reviewed some research papers based on AI techniques together with NDT techniques which are able to collect data from the test object without making any damage. The research works which I have reviewed and demonstrated that by adopting the AI based system, it is almost possible to solve all the problems and this system is very much reliable and efficient for diagnose problems of this transportation domain. I have reviewed solutions provided by different companies based on AI techniques, their products and reviewed some white papers provided by some of those companies. AI based techniques likemachine vision, stereo vision, laser based techniques and neural network are used in most cases to solve the problems which are performed by the railway engineers. The problems in railway handled by the AI based techniques performed by NDT approach which is a very broad, interdisciplinary field that plays a critical role in assuring that structural components and systems perform their function in a reliable and cost effective fashion. The NDT approach ensures the uniformity, quality and serviceability of materials without causing any damage of that materials is being tested. This testing methods use some way to test product like, Visual and Optical testing, Radiography, Magnetic particle testing, Ultrasonic testing, Penetrate testing, electro mechanic testing and acoustic emission testing etc. The inspection procedure has done periodically because of better maintenance. This inspection procedure done by the railway engineers manually with the aid of AI based techniques. The main idea of thesis work is to demonstrate how the problems can be reduced of thistransportation area based on the works done by different researchers and companies. And I have also provided some ideas and comments according to those works and trying to provide some proposal to use better inspection method where it is needed. The scope of this thesis work is automatic interpretation of data from NDT, with the goal of detecting flaws accurately and efficiently. AI techniques such as neural networks, machine vision, knowledge-based systems and fuzzy logic were applied to a wide spectrum of problems in this area. Another scope is to provide an insight into possible research methods concerning railway sleeper, fastener, ballast and overhead inspection by automatic interpretation of data.In this thesis work, I have discussed about problems which are arise in railway sleepers, fastener, and overhead and ballasted track. For this reason I have reviewed some research papers related with these areas and demonstrated how their systems works and the results of those systems. After all the demonstrations were taking place of the advantages of using AI techniques in contrast with those manual systems exist previously. This work aims to summarize the findings of a large number of research papers deploying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for the automatic interpretation of data from nondestructive testing (NDT). Problems in rail transport domain are mainly discussed in this work. The overall work of this paper goes to the inspection of railway sleepers, fastener, ballast and overhead.

The eigenvector associated with the smallest eigenvalue of the autocorrelation matrix of input signals is called minor component. Minor component analysis (MCA) is a statistical approach for extracting minor component from input signals and has been applied in many fields of signal processing and data analysis. In this letter, we propose a neural networks learning algorithm for estimating adaptively minor component from input signals. Dynamics of the proposed algorithm are analyzed via a deterministic discrete time (DDT) method. Some sufficient conditions are obtained to guarantee convergence of the proposed algorithm.

It has been an important and challenging task to classify and evaluate the contents in wool blends. Quantitative characterisation of animal fibre scale patterns has attracted considerable attention, since it is the major evidence for identification and subsequent classification purpose. Although techniques such as imaging processing and linear demarcation functions have been used to identify unknown fibre type with some success, a more comprehensive approach is required to perform this task. In this paper, a new approach is presented, which employs non-linear demarcation functions by using an artificial neural network (ANN). Based on scale pattern features extracted by using image processing techniques the artificial neural network (ANN) model is to classify mohair and merino fibres. It is observed that the techniques developed in this work are very effective and have the potential to be applied to other animal fibres.

Successfully determining competitive optimal schedules for electricity generation intimately hinges on the forecasts of loads. The nonstationarity and high volatility of loads make their accurate prediction somewhat problematic. Presence of uncertainty in data also significantly degrades accuracy of point predictions produced by deterministic load forecasting models. Therefore, operation planning utilizing these predictions will be unreliable. This paper aims at developing prediction intervals rather than producing exact point prediction. Prediction intervals are theatrically more reliable and practical than predicted values. The delta and Bayesian techniques for constructing prediction intervals for forecasted loads are implemented here. To objectively and comprehensively assess quality of constructed prediction intervals, a new index based on length and coverage probability of prediction intervals is developed. In experiments with real data, and through calculation of global statistics, it is shown that neural network point prediction performance is unreliable. In contrast, prediction intervals developed using the delta and Bayesian techniques are satisfactorily narrow, with a high coverage probability.

This paper presents some results on the global exponential stabilization for neural networks with various activation functions and time-varying continuously distributed delays. Based on augmented time-varying Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, new delay-dependent conditions for the global exponential stabilization are obtained in terms of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is given to illustrate the feasibility of our results.

Genetic Algorithm is an important optimization technique, though its application in Fuzzy system is usually limited by problems like local optimal and premature convergence. With an aim to improve the performance of simple Genetic Algorithm, we propose a multi-population genetic algorithm MP-GA which uses two populations collaborating with each other, and apply it to fuzzy controller design to optimize its control rules. The simulation results of Inverted Pendulum demonstrate the effectiveness of this proposed method.

This paper presents a novel conflict-resolving neural network classifier that combines the ordering algorithm, fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM), and the dynamic decay adjustment (DDA) algorithm, into a unified framework. The hybrid classifier, known as Ordered FAMDDA, applies the DDA algorithm to overcome the limitations of FAM and ordered FAM in achieving a good generalization/performance. Prior to network learning, the ordering algorithm is first used to identify a fixed order of training patterns. The main aim is to reduce and/or avoid the formation of overlapping prototypes of different classes in FAM during learning. However, the effectiveness of the ordering algorithm in resolving overlapping prototypes of different classes is compromised when dealing with complex datasets. Ordered FAMDDA not only is able to determine a fixed order of training patterns for yielding good generalization, but also is able to reduce/resolve overlapping regions of different classes in the feature space for minimizing misclassification during the network learning phase. To illustrate the effectiveness of Ordered FAMDDA, a total of ten benchmark datasets are experimented. The results are analyzed and compared with those from FAM and Ordered FAM. The outcomes demonstrate that Ordered FAMDDA, in general, outperforms FAM and Ordered FAM in tackling pattern classification problems.

Identifying an appropriate architecture of an artificial neural network (ANN) for a given task is important because learning and generalisation of an ANN is affected by its structure. In this paper, an online pruning strategy is proposed to participate in the learning process of two constructive networks, i.e. fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) and fuzzy ARTMAP with dynamic decay adjustment (FAMDDA), and the resulting hybrid networks are called FAM/FAMDDA with temporary nodes (i.e. FAM-T and FAMDDA-T, respectively). FAM-T and FAMDDA-T possess a capability of reducing the network complexity online by removing unrepresentative neurons. The performances of FAM-T and FAMDDA-T are evaluated and compared with those of FAM and FAMDDA using a total of 13 benchmark data sets. To demonstrate the applicability of FAM-T and FAMDDA-T, a real fault detection and diagnosis task in a power plant is tested. The results from both benchmark studies and real-world application show that FAMDDA-T and FAM-T are able to yield satisfactory classification performances, with the advantage of having parsimonious network structures.
