Algae bloom is one of the major consequences of the eutrophication of aquatic systems, including algae capable of producing toxic substances. Among these are several species of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, that have the capacity to adapt themselves to changes in the water column. Thus, the horizontal distribution of cyanobacteria harmful algae blooms (CHABs) is essential, not only to the environment, but also for public health. The use of remote sensing techniques for mapping CHABs has been explored by means of bio-optical modeling of phycocyanin (PC), a unique inland waters cyanobacteria pigment. However, due to the small number of sensors with a spectral band of the PC absorption feature, it is difficult to develop semi-analytical models. This study evaluated the use of an empirical model to identify CHABs using TM and ETM+ sensors aboard Landsat 5 and 7 satellites. Five images were acquired for applying the model. Besides the images, data was also collected in the Guarapiranga Reservoir, in São Paulo Metropolitan Region, regarding the cyanobacteria cell count (cells/mL), which was used as an indicator of CHABs biomass. When model values were analyzed excluding calibration factors for temperate lakes, they showed a medium correlation (R²=0.81, p=0.036), while when the factors were included the model showed a high correlation (R²=0.96, p=0.003) to the cyanobacteria cell count. The empirical model analyzed proved useful as an important tool for policy makers, since it provided information regarding the horizontal distribution of CHABs which could not be acquired from traditional monitoring techniques.

Há uma grande expectativa para o desenvolvimento de biossensores miniaturizados, que permitam análises mais eficientes e rápidas, em matrizes complexas como as encontradas: no ar, alimentos, águas residuais e em medicamentos. Recentemente, filmes poliméricos inteligentes ativados por estímulo externo têm atraído bastante interesse no desenvolvimento desses tais nanosensores para uso em sistemas químicos e bioquímicos. Estes materiais apresentam uma alta sensibilidade a alterações físicas ou químicas ocorridas na sua interface, e respondem seletivamente a essas mudanças para se adaptarem ao meio. Juntando-se as propriedades estímulo-responsivas desses polímeros com a alta seletividade de reações biológicas tem-se uma excelente combinação para a criação de nano biossensores. A esse tipo de sistema: interfaces/material biológico adota-se a nomenclatura biointerface. As biointerfaces são biossensores em potencial, e na preparação dos biossensores a tarefa mais complicada na sua preparação é o desenvolvimento de superfícies adequadas para o interfaceamento com material biológico, de maneira que a parte biológica possa atuar de forma sensível e estável. A primeira etapa consistiu na produção e caracterização dos polímeros escova (P2VP), os quais serão preparados pelo processo de deposição térmica. A caracterização dos mesmos foi realizada por imagens microscopia de força atômica (AFM), via eletroquímica e por transmissão de ressonância plasmônica de superfície. Na etapa posterior foi estudada a imobilização da glicose oxidase para a preparação do biossensor. O dispositivo fabricado foi empregado para a determinação direta de glicose. Desta forma, esperou-se obter uma metodologia de menor custo e tempo de análise. The bone resorption in the anterior maxilla, due to its aesthetic importance, can be considered one of the challenges in implant dentistry. Autogenous bone graft is the most indicated bone augmentation procedure, aiming an implant supported rehabilitation.. Alternatively, some other graft procedures can be done with homogenous and xenogenous bone graft, biomaterials and different associations. Additionally to the mentioned biomaterials, the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), specially the rhBMP-2, which was characterized as a bone osteoinductor, and consecutively, a potential autogenous graft substitute, with previsibility and no necessity of association to other biomaterial. The objective of this study is to present a single case using the rhBMP-2 for bone augmentation.

The development of new dental materials has expanded dental therapeutic modalities ensuring excellence in aesthetic restorative treatments. Thus, the direct restorative procedures have been used in cases of dental reconstruction allowing an effective treatment with a low cost, while preserving healthy tooth structure. However, the clinician must be used to the techniques and the material in order to ensure longevity and success in the direct restorative procedure. The aim of this paper is to descrive, after completion of periodontal surgical procedures, the direct restorative step performed for dental reconstruction and diastema closure. The integration between Restorative Dentistry and periodontics enableb the restoration of a harmonious smile in a conservative manner, ensuring aesthetics and patient stisfaction.

Objective: We investigated the relation between duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and clinical outcomes up to 12 months after Genous (TM) endothelial progenitor cell capturing R stent (TM) placement in patients from the e-HEALING registry. Background: Cessation of (DAPT) has been shown to be associated with the occurrence of stent thrombosis (ST). After Genous placement, 1 month of DAPT is recommended. Methods: Patients were analyzed according to continuation or discontinuation of DAPT at a 30-day and 6-month landmark, excluding patients with events before the landmark. Each landmark was a new baseline, and outcomes were followed up to 12 months after stenting. The main outcome for our current analysis was target vessel failure (TVF), defined as target vessel-related cardiac death or myocardial infarction and target vessel revascularization. Secondary outcomes included ST. (Un)adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for TVF were calculated with Cox regression. Results: No difference was observed in the incidence of TVF [HR: 1.03; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.651.65, P = 0.89] in patients continuing DAPT (n = 4,249) at 30 days versus patients stopped (n = 309), and HR: 0.82 (95% CI: 0.551.23, P = 0.34) in patients continuing DAPT (n = 2,654) at 6 months versus patients stopped [n = 1,408] DAPT). Furthermore, no differences were observed in ST. Even after addition of identified independent predictors for TVF, adjusted TVF hazards were comparable. Conclusions: In a post-hoc analysis of e-HEALING, duration of DAPT was not associated with the occurrence of the outcomes TVF or ST. The Genous stent may be an attractive treatment especially in patients at increased risk for (temporary) cessation of DAPT or bleeding. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of beta-alanine supplementation on exercise capacity and the muscle carnosine content in elderly subjects. Eighteen healthy elderly subjects (60-80 years, 10 female and 4 male) were randomly assigned to receive either beta-alanine (BA, n = 12) or placebo (PL, n = 6) for 12 weeks. The BA group received 3.2 g of beta-alanine per day (2 x 800 mg sustained-release Carnosyn (TM) tablets, given 2 times per day). The PL group received 2 x (2 x 800 mg) of a matched placebo. At baseline (PRE) and after 12 weeks (POST-12) of supplementation, assessments were made of the muscle carnosine content, anaerobic exercise capacity, muscle function, quality of life, physical activity and food intake. A significant increase in the muscle carnosine content of the gastrocnemius muscle was shown in the BA group (+85.4%) when compared with the PL group (+7.2%) (p = 0.004; ES: 1.21). The time-to-exhaustion in the constant-load submaximal test (i.e., TLIM) was significantly improved (p = 0.05; ES: 1.71) in the BA group (+36.5%) versus the PL group (+8.6%). Similarly, time-to-exhaustion in the incremental test was also significantly increased (p = 0.04; ES 1.03) following beta-alanine supplementation (+12.2%) when compared with placebo (+0.1%). Significant positive correlations were also shown between the relative change in the muscle carnosine content and the relative change in the time-to-exhaustion in the TLIM test (r = 0.62; p = 0.01) and in the incremental test (r = 0.48; p = 0.02). In summary, the current data indicate for the first time, that beta-alanine supplementation is effective in increasing the muscle carnosine content in healthy elderly subjects, with subsequent improvement in their exercise capacity.
