A process for preparing three-layer piezoelectrets from fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) copolymer films is introduced. Samples are made from commercial FEP films by means of laser cutting, laser bonding, electrode evaporation, and high-field poling. The observed dielectric-resonance spectra demonstrate the piezoelectricity of the FEP sandwiches. Piezoelectric d (33) coefficients up to a few hundred pC/N are achieved. Charging at elevated temperatures can increase the thermal stability of the piezoelectrets. Isothermal experiments for approximately 15 min demonstrate that samples charged at 140A degrees C keep their piezoelectric activity up to at least 120A degrees C and retain 70% of their initial d (33) even at 130A degrees C. Acoustical measurements show a relatively flat frequency response in the range between 300 Hz and 20 kHz.

The glass-forming ability (GFA) of metallic alloys is associated with a topological instability criterion combined with a new parameter based on the average electronegativity difference of an element and its surrounding neighbours. In this model, we assume that during solidification the glassy phase competes directly with the supersaturated solid solution having the lowest topological instability factor for a given composition. This criterion is combined with the average electronegativity difference among the elements in the alloy, which reflects the strength of the liquid. The GFA is successfully correlated with this combined criterion in several binary glass-forming systems.

In this work, a criterion considering the topological instability (lambda) and the differences in the electronegativity of the constituent elements (Delta e) was applied to the Al-La and Al-Ni-La systems in order to predict the best glass-forming compositions. The results were compared with literature data and with our own experimental data for the Al-La-Ni system. The alloy described in the literature as the best glass former in the Al-La system is located near the point with local maximum for the lambda.Delta e criterion. A good agreement was found between the predictions of the lambda.Delta e criterion and literature data in the Al-La-Ni system, with the region of the best glass-forming ability (GFA) and largest supercooled liquid region (Delta T(x)) coinciding with the best compositional region for amorphization indicated by the lambda.Delta e criterion. Four new glassy compositions were found in the Al-La-Ni system, with the best predicted composition presenting the best glass-forming ability observed so far for this system. Although the lambda.Delta e criterion needs further refinements for completely describe the glass-forming ability in the Al-La and Al-La-Ni systems, the results demonstrated that this criterion is a good tool to predict new glass-forming compositions. Hybrid latices of poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) were synthesized via in situ miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of 3 and 6 wt % organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT). Three different ammonium salts: cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (Dodigen), and distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (Praepagen), were investigated as organic modifiers. Increased affinity for organic liquids was observed after organic modification of the MMT. Stable hybrid latices were obtained even though miniemulsion stability was disturbed to some extent by the presence of the OMMTs during the synthesis. Highly intercalated and exfoliated polymer-MMT nanocomposites films were produced with good MMT dispersion throughout the polymeric matrix. Materials containing MMT modified with the 16 carbons alkyl chain salt (CTAC) resulted in the largest increments of storage modulus, indicating that single chain quaternary salts provide higher increments on mechanical properties. Films presenting exfoliated structure resulted in the largest increments in the onset temperature of decomposition. For the range of OMMT loading studied, the nanocomposite structure influenced more significantly the thermal stability properties of the hybrid material than did the OMMT loading. The film containing 3 wt % MMT modified with the two 18 carbons alkyl chains salt (Praepagen) provided the highest increment of onset temperature of decomposition. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic-martensitic steels are potential candidates for applications in future fusion power plants. High creep resistance, good oxidation resistance, reduced neutron activation and microstructural long-term stability at temperatures of about 650-700 degrees C are required in this context. In order to evaluate its thermal stability in the ferritic phase field, samples of the reduced activation ferritic-martensitic 9%Cr-ODS-Eurofer steel were cold rolled to 50% and 80% reductions and further annealed in vacuum from 300 to 800 degrees C for 1 h. The characterization in the annealed state was performed by scanning electron microscopy in the backscattered electron mode, high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the fine dispersion of Y-based particles (about 10 nm in size) is effective to prevent recrystallization. The low recrystallized volume fraction (<0.1) is associated to the nuclei found at prior grain boundaries and around large M(23)C(6) particles. Static recovery was found to be the predominant softening mechanism of this steel in the investigated temperature range. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanocomposite membranes containing polysulfone (PSI) and sodium montmorillonite from Wyoming (MMT) were prepared by a combination of solution dispersion and the immersion step of the wet-phase inversion method. The purpose was to study the MMT addition with contents of 0.5 and 3.0 mass% MMT in the preparation of nanocomposite membranes by means of morphology, thermal, mechanical and hydrophilic properties of nanocomposite membranes and to compare these properties to the pure PSf membrane ones. Small-angle X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of intercalated clay mineral layers in the PSf matrix and TEM images also presented an exfoliated structure. A good dispersion of the clay mineral particles was detected by SEM images. Tensile tests showed that both elongation at break and tensile strength of the nanocomposites were improved in comparison to the pristine PSf. The thermal stability of the nanocomposite membranes, evaluated by onset and final temperatures of degradation, was also enhanced. The hydrophilicity of the nanocomposite membranes, determined by water contact angle measurements, was higher; therefore, the MMT addition was useful to produce more hydrophilic membranes. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic/martensitic (FM) steels are promising candidates for structural applications in future fusion power reactors. In order to evaluate the thermal stability of 80% cold-rolled ODS-EUROFER, samples were annealed for 1 h at temperatures up to about 0.9 T(m), where T(m) is the absolute melting point. The characterization of the annealed samples was performed using transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. Results show that static recovery is the main softening mechanism of this steel when annealed below 800 degrees C. The volume fraction of recrystallized grains is quite small (below 0.10). Above 900 degrees C, martensitic transformation takes place causing pronounced hardening. Large M(23)C(6) particles are found at the grain boundaries after tempering at 750 degrees C for 2 h.

Micrometer-sized magnetic particles hosted on network material were successfully prepared by a simple chemical process (ion exchange followed by co-precipitation) from commercial styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) coupled to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed the observation of submicron particles. All the produced spherical beads have presented metallic particles (NiFe2O4, CuFe2O4, CoFe2O4, or MnFe2O4), either as isolated particles or agglomerates, located on their external and internal (within pores) The thermal stability of the composites, evaluated by thermogravimetric techniques, were found to be dependent on the amount of ferrite particles incorporated into them.

Block copolymers containing isosorbide succinate and L-lactic acid repeating units with different mass compositions were synthesized in two steps: bulk ring-opening copolymerization from L-lactide and poli(isosorbide succinate) (PIS) preoligomer, in the presence of tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate as catalyst. followed by chain extension in solution by using hexamethylene diisocyanate. Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and a chain extension product from PIS were also obtained, for comparison. SEC, (1)H and (13)C NMR, MALDI-TOFMS, WAXD, DSC, TG, and contact angle measurements were used in their characterization. The incorporation of isosorbide succinate into PLLA main backbone had minor effect on the thermal stability and the T(g) of the products. However, it reduced the crystallinity and increased the surface energy in relation to PLLA. Nonwoven mats of the block copolymers and PLLA obtained by electrospinning technique were submitted to fibroblasts 3T3-L1 cell culture. The copolymers presented enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation rate as revealed by MTT assay and SEM images. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

PEGylation is one of the most promising and extensively studied strategies for improving the pharmacological properties of proteins as well as their physical and thermal stability. Purified lysozyme obtained from hen egg white by batch mode was modified by PEGylation with methoxypolyethyleneglycol succinimidyl succinato (mPEG-SS, MW 5000). The conjugates produced retained full enzyme activity with the substrate glycol chitosan, independent of degree of enzyme modification, although lysozyme activity with the substrate Micrococcus lysodeikticus was altered according to the degree of modification. The conjugate with a low degree of modification by mPEG-SS retained 67% of its enzyme activity with the M. lysodeikticus substrate. The mPEG-SS was also shown to be a highly reactive polymer. The effects of pH and temperature on PEGylated lysozymes indicated that the conjugate was active over a wide pH range and was stable up to 50 degrees C. This conjugate also showed resistance to proteolytic degradation, remained stable in human serum, and displayed greater antimicrobial activity than native lysozyme against Gram-negative bacteria.

Mesoporous Ti-substituted aluminophosphates (AlPOs) with a hexagonal, cubic and lamellar pore structure, characteristic of MCM-41, MCM-48. and MCM-50, respectively, were synthesized. The stability of these mesophases upon template removal was studied. The pore structures, surface properties, and local atom environments of Al, P, and Ti of the hexagonal and cubic Ti-containing mesoporous products were extensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, AAS, XPS, ultraviolet-visible, and adsorption of nitrogen and water vapor techniques while the lamellar mesophase was not further characterized due to its very poor thermal stability. Ti-containing mesoporous AlPO materials show a reasonable thermal stability upon template removal, a hydrophilic surface property, and high porosity showing application potentials in catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons. Metal oxide pillared clay (PILC) possesses several interesting properties, such as large surface area, high pore volume and tunable pore size (from micropore to mesopore), high thermal stability, strong surface acidity and catalytic active substrates/metal oxide pillars. These unique characteristics make PILC an attractive material in catalytic reactions. It can be made either as catalyst support or directly used as catalyst. This paper is a continuous work from Kloprogge's review (J.T. Kloprogge, J. Porous Mater. 5, 5 1998) on the synthesis and properties of smectites and related PILCs and will focus on the diverse applications of clay pillared with different types of metal oxides in the heterogeneous catalysis area and adsorption area. The relation between the performance of the PILC and its physico-chemical features will be addressed.

The phase and microstructural evolution of multi-cation Sm-Ca-alpha-sialon ceramics was investigated. Six samples were prepared, ranging from a pure Sm-sialon to a pure Ca-sialon, with calcium replacing samarium in 20 eq% increments, thus maintaining an equivalent design composition in all samples. After pressureless sintering at 1820 degreesC for 2 It, all samples were subsequently heat treated up to 192 h at 1450 and 1300 degreesC. The amount of grain boundary glass in the samples after sintering was observed to decrease with increasing calcium levels. A M-ss' or M-ss',-gehlenite solid solution was observed to form during the 1450 degreesC heat treatment of all Sm-containing samples, and this phase forms in clusters in the high-Sm samples. The thermal stability of the alpha-sialon phase was improved in the multi-cation systems. Heat treatment at 1300 degreesC produces SmAlO3 in the high-Sm samples, a M-ss',-gehlenite solid solution in the high-Ca samples, and a Sm-Ca-apatite phase in some intermediate samples. Aspergillus terricola and Aspergillus ochraceus, isolated from Brazilian soil, were cultivated in Vogel and Adams media supplemented with 20 different carbon sources, at 30 A degrees C, under static conditions, for 120 and 144 h, respectively. High levels of cellulase-free xylanase were produced in birchwood or oat spelt xylan-media. Wheat bran was the most favorable agricultural residue for xylanase production. Maximum activity was obtained at 60 A degrees C and pH 6.5 for A. terricola, and 65 A degrees C and pH 5.0 for A. ochraceus. A. terricola xylanase was stable for 1 h at 60 A degrees C and retained 50% activity after 80 min, while A. ochraceus xylanase presented a t (50) of 10 min. The xylanases were stable in an alkali pH range. Biobleaching of 10 U/g dry cellulose pulp resulted in 14.3% delignification (A. terricola) and 36.4% (A. ochraceus). The brightness was 2.4-3.4% ISO higher than the control. Analysis in SEM showed defibrillation of the microfibrils. Arabinase traces and beta-xylosidase were detected which might act synergistically with xylanase.

A mycelial beta-glucosidase from the thermophilic mold Humicola insolens was purified and biochemically characterized. The enzyme showed carbohydrate content of 21% and apparent molecular mass of 94 kDa, as estimated by gel filtration. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed a single polypeptide band of 55 kDa, suggesting that the native enzyme was a homodimer. Mass spectrometry analysis showed amino acid sequence similarity with a P-glucosidase from Humicola grisea var. thermoidea, with about 22% coverage. Optima of temperature and pH were 60 degrees C and 6.0-6.5, respectively. The enzyme was stable up to I h at 50 degrees C and showed a half-life of approximately 44 min at 55 degrees C. The beta-glucosidase hydrolyzed cellobiose, lactose, p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-fucopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside, p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside, o-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside, and salicin. Kinetic studies showed that p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-fucopyranoside and cellobiose were the best enzyme substrates. Enzyme activity was stimulated by glucose or xylose at concentrations up to 400 mM, with maximal stimulatory effect (about 2-fold) around 40 mM. The high catalytic efficiency for the natural substrate, good thermal stability, strong stimulation by glucose or xylose, and tolerance to elevated concentrations of these monosaccharides qualify this enzyme for application in the hydrolysis of cellulosic materials.
