The present study was carried out in Northeastern Region of Brazil, in order to investigate the use of stingless bee Melipona subnitida Ducke in the pollination of greenhouse sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Treatments of hand cross-pollination, hand self-pollination, pollination by bees and restricted pollination were performed. Results showed that despite sweet pepper flowers are considered autogamous, this crop benefits from pollination by M. subnitida, producing fruits significantly heavier and wider, containing a greater number of seeds and of better quality (lower percentage of malformed fruits) than self-pollinated sweet pepper. Thus, M. subnitida can be considered an efficient pollinator of greenhouse sweet pepper.

The present work aimed at evaluating the divergence among common bean accessions by their agronomic, morphological and molecular traits, based on the Ward-MLM procedure. A collection of 57 accessions from the gene bank of Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo was used in this study, from which: 31 were landraces belonging to the community Fortaleza, in the municipality of Muqui, ES, Brazil; 20 accessions were provided by Embrapa Trigo; and 6 were commercial cultivars. Five agronomic traits (plant cycle, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, weight of 100 seeds, and grain yield), five morphological traits (growth habit, plant size, seed shape, seed color, and commercial group) and 16 microsatellite primers were evaluated. High genetic variability was detected considering morphological, agronomic and molecular traits in the 57 common bean accessions studied. The Ward-MLM procedure showed that the ideal number of groups was five, according to the pseudo F and pseudo t² criteria. The accessions from Andean origin had heavier seeds than others and formed a cluster. The Ward-MLM statistical procedure is a useful technique to detect genetic divergence and to cluster genotypes by simultaneously using morphological, agronomic and molecular data.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the morphological diversity of oil palm seeds and to cluster the accessions according to their morphological characteristics. Forty-one accessions from the oil palm germplasm bank of Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental were evaluated - 18 of Elaeis oleifera and 23 of E. guineensis. The groups were formed based on morphological characteristics, by principal component analysis. In E. oleifera, four groups were formed, tied to their region of origin, but with significant morphological differences between accessions from the same population. For tenera-type E. guineensis seeds, three widely divergent groups were formed, especially as to external parameters, which differentiated them from the other ones. The parameter endocarp thickness stood out in intra- and inter-population differentiation. For dura-type E. guineensis, three groups were formed, with larger seeds and thicker endocarps, which differed from all the other ones. The variability observed for seed characteristics in the analyzed accessions allows the establishment of different groups, to define strategies for genetic improvement.

The involvement of lipoxygenase isozymes in several physiological processes of plants has been described but their role is not well understood and more biochemical studies are needed to elucidate the role of the "Lipoxygenase Pathway" in plant physiology. Thus, the biochemical and kinetic characterization of a lipoxygenases "pool" from soybean leaves was carried out. Two genotypes were used: IAC-100 (a normal variety having lipoxygenases in the seeds) and IAC-100 TN (genetically modified genotype, which is devoid of lipoxygenases in the seeds). The plants were submitted to the application of fatty acids (lipoxygenase substrates) on leaves. The results of the biochemical and kinetic studies of lipoxygenase isozymes from leaves of the two genotypes analysed showed that genetic removal of lipoxygenase from seeds did not affect the response of the plant to the treatment, since both genotypes showed similar results.

Growing knowledge on the health-promoting impact of antioxidants in everyday foods, combined with the assumption that a number of common synthetic preservatives may have hazardous side effects has led to increased investigations in the field of natural antioxidants, principally those found in plants. Food industries normally discard plant residues that could benefit the human health and diminish undesirable environmental impact. Once estimated the content of antioxidants in these residues, advantageous economical and social alternatives to the discard are possible, for example, their use for preparation of nutraceuticals to be offered to low-income populations. We present here a broad, although not complete, account of the continuously growing knowledge on the antioxidant capacity of whole fruits, seeds and peels, cereals, vegetal oils and aromatic plants, at several physical forms, as well as a description of the usual methods for evaluating their antioxidant capacity and examples of agroindustrial processes that could be harnessed for the production of antioxidant supplement food, along with research perspectives in the area.

The present research highlights the macronutrient abundance in the sediments of beaches and cliffs and cultivates in the river Purus and flowing, southwest of Amazon. The concentrations found in leaves and bean seeds and corn leaves reflect the mineralogical and chemical nature of those rich sediments in K2O and Na2O, which are formed by smectite, illite and K-feldspar. The factors of transfer of the elements in the corn leaves and bean (Ca>K>Na) and bean seeds (Na>K>Ca) demonstrate that the nutrient needs of the cultivate were found appropriately in the sediments (soils) of the beaches and cliffs.

Six limonoids were isolated in hexane extract obtained from the seeds and pericarps of Carapa guianensis. The structures of the limonoids were determined based on the analysis of High Resolution Mass Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (uni-and bi-dimensional experiments) data. This is the first report of isolation of the limonoid 6α-acetoxy-7-deacetilgedunin from the seeds of the C. guianensis species. The limonoid 6-hydroxy-methyl angolensate was also described for the first time in this species.

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is the most prevalent virus on soybeans (Glycine max) throughout the world. It causes mottling on seeds and has been associated with yield reduction. Recently, a new strain (SMV 95-1) was found infecting resistant cultivars, causing dwarfing and systemic necrosis. In a screening test carried out with the strains SMV 95-1 and SMV 95-2 on the germplasm collection, several resistant cvs. Embrapa 60, Embrapa 61, Embrapa 62, Embrapa 66 , Embrapa 133, Embrapa 134, Embrapa 135, and Embrapa 136 were identified as resistant to both strains. The resistant genotypes may serve in future soybean breeding programs in Brazil.

The currently used forms of cancer therapy are associated with drug resistance and toxicity to healthy tissues. Thus, more efficient methods are needed for cancer-specific induction of growth arrest and programmed cell death, also known as apoptosis. Therapeutic forms of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) are investigated in clinical trials due to the capability of TRAIL to trigger apoptosis specifically in cancer cells by activation of cell surface death receptors. Many tumors, however, have acquired resistance to TRAIL-induced apoptosis and sensitizing drugs for combinatorial treatments are, therefore, in high demand. This study demonstrates that lignans, natural polyphenols enriched in seeds and cereal, have a remarkable sensitizing effect on TRAIL-induced cell death at non-toxic lignan concentrations. In TRAIL-resistant and androgen-dependent prostate cancer cells we observe that lignans repress receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) activity and downregulate cell survival signaling via the Akt pathway, which leads to increased TRAIL sensitivity. A structure-activity relationship analysis reveals that the γ-butyrolactone ring of the dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans is essential for the rapidly reversible TRAIL-sensitizing activity of these compounds. Furthermore, the lignan nortrachelogenin (NTG) is identified as the most efficient of the 27 tested lignans and norlignans in sensitization of androgen-deprived prostate cancer cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. While this combinatorial anticancer approach may leave normal cells unharmed, several efficient cancer drugs are too toxic, insoluble or unstable to be used in systemic therapy. To enable use of such drugs and to protect normal cells from cytotoxic effects, cancer-targeted drug delivery vehicles of nanometer scale have recently been generated. The newly developed nanoparticle system that we tested in vitro for cancer cell targeting combines the efficient drug-loading capacity of mesoporous silica to the versatile particle surface functionalization of hyperbranched poly(ethylene imine), PEI. The mesoporous hybrid silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were functionalized with folic acid to promote targeted internalization by folate receptor overexpressing cancer cells. The presented results demonstrate that the developed carrier system can be employed in vitro for cancer selective delivery of adsorbed or covalently conjugated molecules and furthermore, for selective induction of apoptotic cell death in folate receptor expressing cancer cells. The tested carrier system displays potential for simultaneous delivery of several anticancer agents specifically to cancer cells also in vivo.

In this study, I tested the efficacy of ants as secondary seed dispersers of Ricinus communis in southeastern Brazil. In a natural population of 143 individuals, I determined the ballistic dispersal distance for 62 seeds and 100 additional seeds were experimentally offered to ants in groups of ten seeds along a transect of 50 m. Fifty-three seeds were removed by ants, mainly by the leafcutter Atta sexdens (90.4%). The dispersal distance by ants was high, compared to the global average (4.38 m ± 0.74 m vs. 0.96 m), but was lower than the ballistic distance (7.27 m ± 0.13 m). Ants increased the total dispersal distance (8.66 m ± 0.60 m), but the main benefit for the plant was the directed dispersal, with seed deposition on the enriched soil of ant nests.

This study aimed to study the composition and dynamics of seed bank from soil of coffee plantations associated with grevilea trees in the experimental fields of the Southwest Bahia State University, on Vitória da Conquista campus. The experiments were carried out from September 2006 to May 2007. The coffee trees (Coffea arabica) were sown at three x one m spacing, associated with grevillea trees (Grevillea robusta) and maintained at densities of 277, 139, 123, 69, 62 and 31 plants ha-1, under direct sunlight. One hundred grams of soil were taken from each treatment with four repetitions and later identified and counted with a 10x magnifying glass. To determine seedling emergence, four soil samples of 1000 g were collected from each experimental field and transported to the greenhouse. Seedling emergence was observed by counts after 15, 30 and 45 days. The experimental design was randomized blocks of seven treatments (soil from different tree densities) and four replicates; the experimental unit consisted of a plastic tray (0, 30 x 0.22 x 0.06 m) containing 1.000 g of soil. The variables utilized to characterize the bank and its dynamics were: relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance, importance index and species diversity (Shannon-Weaver index).Increased number of monocotyledon seeds and sprouts were verified in the treatments maintained under full sunlight.

The seed coat influences the early stages of germination of many seeds and sometimes maintains seed dormancy. Early reports have shown that the testa influences the germination response of Cucumis anguria seeds to light although the response to temperature as influenced by the tegument is not well understood. The main purpose of this study was to observe the influence of the testa on the germination of Cucumis anguria by using parameters as germinability and isothermal germination rate. The assays were carried out in a thermal-gradient block with water imbibed seeds kept in darkness. Estimates of the activation enthalpies (deltaH) show |deltaH| < 50 kJ.mol-1 between 26.1 °C and 35.2 °C (intact seeds) and between 25.4 °C and 35.2 °C (scarified seeds), whereas at temperatures greater than 35.2 °C the germination may be limited by processes with |deltaH| > 125 kJ.mol-1. It is suggested that the testa limits embryo expansion rather than interfering with diffusion processes.
