Size dependence of refractive index of Si nanoclusters embedded in SiO2

he complex refractive index of SiO2 layers containing Si nanoclusters (Si-nc) has been measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range from 1.5 to 5.0 eV. It has been correlated with the amount of Si excess accurately measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the nanocluster size determined by energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. The Si-nc embedded in SiO2 have been produced by a fourfold Si+ ion implantation, providing uniform Si excess aimed at a reliable ellipsometric modeling. The complex refractive index of the Si-nc phase has been calculated by the application of the Bruggeman effective-medium approximation to the composite media. The characteristic resonances of the refractive index and extinction coefficient of bulk Si vanish out in Si-nc. In agreement with theoretical simulations, a significant reduction of the refractive index of Si-nc is observed, in comparison with bulk and amorphous silicon. The knowledge of the optical properties of these composite layers is crucial for the realization of Si-based waveguides and light-emitting devices.

Electroluminiscence and optical amplification in silicon nanostructures: towards the integration of electronics and photonics

This line of research of my group intends to establish a Silicon technological platform in the field of photonics allowing the development of a wide set of applications. Particularly, what is still lacking in Silicon Photonics is an efficient and integrable light source such an LED or laser. Nanocrystals in silicon oxide or nitride matrices have been recently demonstrated as competitive materials for both active components (electrically and optically driven light emitters and optical amplifiers) and passive ones (waveguides and modulators). The final goal is the achievement of a complete integration of electronic and optical functions in the same CMOS chip. The first part of this paper will introduce the structural and optical properties of LEDs fabricated from silicon nanostructures. The second will treat the interaction of such nanocrystals with rare-earth elements (Er), which lead to an efficient hybrid system emitting in the third window of optical fibers. I will present the fabrication and assessment of optical waveguide amplifiers at 1.54 ¿m for which we have been able to demonstrate recently optical gain in waveguides made from sputtered silicon suboxide materials.

Ontogeny and covariation in the Toarcian genus Osperleioceras (Ammonoidea)

Starting from embryonic (protoconch-ammonitella) and early juvenile shells, which are indistinguishable at the species level, growth curves of Osperleioceras from the Reynesi Subzone (Upper Toarcian) of the Causses Basin (Aveyron, France) show a continuous radiating range of correlated variation in dimensional and ornamental characters, such as involution, whorl compression, rib strength and rib density. This covariation pattern can be observed among single-horizon assemblages, as well as during individual ontogenetic development. The existence of a continuous intergradational series of shells, ranging from stout coarsely ribbed to smooth suboxycone morphologies, rules out functional or ecological selectivity to explain this non-random variability pattern. The complex interdependence of shape and sculpture can be simulated by a model in which sculpture intensity depends on mantle curvature [GUEX, 1999]. The expression of covariation in subadult specimens since the base of Upper Toarcian reveals a rise in variability, concomitant with a size decrease, both contemporaneous with environmental instability. It developed in successive bursts from a fairly long low variability period spanning the whole Middle Toarcian.

Educational expansion, intergenerational mobility and over-education

[eng] There is a vast literature on intergenerational mobility in sociology and economics. Similar interest has emerged for the phenomenon of over-education in both disciplines. There are no studies, however, linking these two research lines. We study the relationship between social mobility and over-education in a context of educational expansion. Our framework allows for the evaluation of several policies, including those affecting social segregation, early intervention programs and the power of unions. Results show the evolution of social mobility, over-education, income inequality and equality of opportunity under each scenario.

Spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking in the limited enantioselective autocatalysis model: abyssal hydrotermal vents as scenario for the emergence of chirality in prebiotic chemistry

The emergence of chirality in enantioselective autocatalysis for compounds unable to transform according to the Frank-like reaction network is discussed with respect to the controversial limited enantioselectivity (LES) model composed of coupled enantioselective and non-enantioselective autocatalyses. The LES model cannot lead to spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) either in closed systems with a homogeneous temperature distribution or in closed systems with a stationary non-uniform temperature distribution. However, simulations of chemical kinetics in a two-compartment model demonstrate that SMSB may occur if both autocatalytic reactions are spatially separated at different temperatures in different compartments but coupled under the action of a continuous internal flow. In such conditions, the system can evolve, for certain reaction and system parameters, toward a chiral stationary state; that is, the system is able to reach a bifurcation point leading to SMSB. Numerical simulations in which reasonable chemical parameters have been used suggest that an ade- quate scenario for such a SMSB would be that of abyssal hydrothermal vents, by virtue of the typical temper- ature gradients found there and the role of inorganic solids mediating chemical reactions in an enzyme-like role. The spatially average field can be as small as 200 V/cm, when the temperature of the sample is below 20 K. The applied electric field leads to a sharp jump in the value of the current to a value which is nearly five orders of magnitude higher than before. When the applied electric field is reduced to below a critical value, the system switches back to a low conductive state. The effect is reversible, symmetric in voltage, and reproducible for different samples. The switching is, we believe, an electronic glass melting transition and it is due to the disordered, highly charged granular nature of PPy.

Chiroptical measurement of chiral aggregates at liquid-liquid interface in centrifugal liquid membrane cell by Mueller matrix and conventional circular dichroism methods

The centrifugal liquid membrane (CLM) cell has been utilized for chiroptical studies of liquid-liquid interfaces with a conventional circular dichroism (CD) spectropolarimeter. These studies required the characterization of optical properties of the rotating cylindrical CLM glass cell, which was used under the high speed rotation. In the present study, we have measured the circular and linear dichroism (CD and LD) spectra and the circular and linear birefringence (CB and LB) spectra of the CLM cell itself as well as those of porphyrine aggregates formed at the liquid-liquid interface in the CLM cell, applying Mueller matrix measurement method. From the results, it was confirmed that the CLM-CD spectra of the interfacial porphyrin aggregates observed by a conventional CD spectropolarimeter should be correct irrespective of LD and LB signals in the CLM cell.

Choix thérapeutique dans les tumeurs costales primaires [Therapeutic choice in primary costal tumors].

Primary rib tumors constitute a rare entity and have only seldom been studied separately. In a retrospective study based on 21 cases, with the help of the literature, we try to specify the specific problems encountered with rib tumors and the therapeutic consequences that follow. Our series comprises 10 benign tumors, 3 malignant tumors and 8 cartilaginous tumors. The benign tumors were resected and all the patients recovered uneventfully. One of the patients died of a plasmocytoma 92 months after resection. Among the cartilaginous tumors, we observed two recurrences after 9 and 24 months from which the patient died eventually at 20 and 72 months after resection. The histologic diagnosis of a rib tumor must be made through an excisional biopsy. Cartilaginous tumors are potentially malignant. They must be treated as malignant tumors by radical resection and primary reconstruction. The long-term follow-up of every patient carrying a rib tumor is mandatory because of the risk of late recurrence.
