Benzene adsorbed on highly acidic sulfated TiO2 (S-TiO2) shows an intriguing resonance Raman (RR) effect, with excitation in the blue-violet region. There are very interesting spectral features: the preferential enhancement of the e(2g) mode (1595 cm(-1)) in relation to the a(1g) mode (ring-breathing mode at 995 cm(-1)) and the appearance of bands at 1565 and 1514 cm(-1). The band at 1565 cm(-1) is probably one of the components of the e(2g) split band, originally a doubly degenerate mode (8a, 8b) in neat benzene, and the band at 1514 cm(-1) is assigned to the 19a mode, an inactive mode in neat benzene. These facts indicate a lowering of symmetry in adsorbed benzene, which may be caused by a strong interaction between S-TiO2 and the benzene molecule with formation of a benzene to Ti (IV) charge transfer (CT) complex or by the formation of a benzene radical cation species. However, the RR spectra of the adsorbed benzene cannot be assigned to the benzene radical cation because the observed wavenumber of the ring-breathing mode does not have the value expected for this species. Moreover, it was found by ESR measurements that the amount of radicals was very low, and so it was concluded that a CT complex is the species that originates the RR spectra. The most favorable intensification of the band at 1595 cm(-1) in the RR spectra of benzene/S-TiO2 at higher excitation energy corroborates this hypothesis, as an absorption band in this energy range, assigned to a CT transition, is observed. Asystematic study on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for 3,6-bi-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bptz) adsorbed onto citrate-modified gold nanoparticles (cit-AuNps) was carried out based on electronic and vibrational spectroscopy and density functional methods. The citrate/bptz exchange was carefully controlled by the stepwise addition of bptz to the cit-AuNps, inducing flocculation and leading to the rise of a characteristic plasmon coupling band in the visible region. Such stepwise procedure led to a uniform decrease of the citrate SERS signals and to the rise of characteristic peaks of bptz, consistent with surface binding via the N heterocyclic atoms. In contrast, single addition of a large amount of bptz promoted complete aggregation of the nanoparticles, leading to a strong enhancement of the SERS signals. In this case, from the distinct Raman profiles involved, the formation of a new SERS environment became apparent, conjugating the influence of the local hot spots and charge-transfer (CT) effects. The most strongly enhanced vibrations belong to a(1) and b(2) representations, and were interpreted in terms of the electromagnetic and the CT mechanisms: the latter involving significant contribution of vibronic coupling in the system. This paper studies the selectivity of Well-defined Au and Ag nanostructures as substrates for the SERS, (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) detection of simazine (6-chloro-N,N`-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) and atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N`-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine). Our data showed that simazine and atrazine displayed similar SERS spectra when the Au was employed as substrate. Conversely, distinct SERS signatures were obtained upon the utilization of Ag substrates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and vibrational assignments suggested that, while simazine and atrazine adsorbed on Au via the N3 position of the triazine ring, simazine adsorbed on Ag via N3 and atrazine via N5. The results presented herein demonstrated that the adsorption geometry of analyte molecules can play a central role over substrate selectivity in SERS, which is particularly important in applications involving ultrasensitive analysis of mixtures containing structurally similar molecules.

Highly dispersed nanocomposites of polyaniline(PANI) and oxidized single wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been prepared using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. The materials were characterized via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The behavior of the composites as a function of the applied potential was also investigated using in situ Raman electrochemical measurements. The results obtained at E(laser) = 1.17 eV suggest that a charge-transfer process occur between PANI and semiconducting nanotubes for samples where the metallic tubes are previously oxidized. The spectroelectrochemical data show that the presence of SWNTs prevents the oxidation of PANI rings. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was obtained by employing a bi-layer gold substrate, assembled by the reduction of Au(III) over gold-seeded nanoparticles immobilized on functionalized glass substrates. The SERS signal was linear with the logarithm of the solution concentrations between 1.0 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) and 1.0 x 10(-3) mol L(-1), indicating that the bi-layer gold substrate affords a significant dynamic range for SERS, providing an excellent analytical response within this concentration range, and revealing the high sensitivity of the gold surface towards such analyte. In addition, using the same gold substrate, a similar calibration curve was obtained for crystal-violet (CV), and it was possible to identify the concentration limit corresponding to the transition from the average SERS to the nonlinear SERS response. Time-dependent fluctuations in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensities were recorded from a roughened silver electrode immersed in diluted solutions of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and congo red (CR). These fluctuations were attributed to a small number of SERS-active molecules probing regions of extremely high electromagnetic field (hot spots) at the nanostructured surface. The time-dependent distribution of SERS intensities followed a tailed statistics at certain applied potentials, which has been linked to single-molecule dynamics. The shape of the distribution was reversibly tuned by the applied voltage. Mixtures of both dyes, R6G and CR, at low concentrations were also investigated. Since R6G is a cationic dye and CR is an anionic dye, the statistics of the SERS intensity distribution of either dye in a mixture were independently controlled by adjusting the applied potential. The potential-controlled distribution of SERS intensities was interpreted by considering the modulation of the surface coverage of the adsorbed dye by the interfacial electric field. This interpretation was supported by a two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation that took into account the time evolution of the surface configuration of the adsorbed species and their probability to populate a hypothetical hot spot. The potential-controlled SERS dynamics reported here is a first step toward the spectroelectrochemical investigation of redox processes at the single-molecule level by SERS.

Polycarbonate membranes (PCM) of various pores sizes (400, 200, 100 and 50 nm) were used as templates for gold deposition. The electrodeposition from gold ions resulted in the formation of gold nanotubes when large pores size PCMs (400 and 200 nm) were used. On the other hand, gold nanowires were predominant for the PCMs with smaller pores size (100 and 50 nm). Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from the probe molecule 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy) was obtained from all these nanostructures. The SERS efficiency of the substrates produced using the PC M templates were compared to two commonly used SERS platforms: a roughened gold electrode and gold nanostructures electrodeposited through organized polystyrene spheres (PSS). The SERS signal of the probe molecule increased as the pore diameter of the PCM template decreased. Moreover, the SERS efficiency from the nanostructures produced using 50 nm PCM templates was four and two times better than the signal from the roughened gold electrode and the PSS template, respectively. The SERS substrates prepared using PCM templates were more homogenous over a larger area (ca. 1 cm(2)), presented better spatial and sample to sample reproducibility than the other substrates. These results show that SERS substrates prepared using PCM templates are promising for the fabrication of planar SERS platforms for analytical/bioanalytical applications.

Alkali niobium tellurite glasses have been prepared and some of their properties measured by differential scanning calorimetry and Raman scattering. The vitreous domain was established in the pseudo ternary phases diagram for the system TeO2-Nb2O5-(0.5K(2)O-0.5Li(2)O). Raman scattering shows that for samples in the TeO2 rich part of the phase diagram the vitreous structure is composed essentially of (TeO4) units connected by the vertices, as in the alpha-TeO2 crystal. The addition of alkali and niobium oxides causes depolymerization to occur with structures composed essentially of (TeO3) and (NbO6) units. Samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing up to 10% mol Nd3+. The addition of this oxide increases the rigidity of the vitreous network shifting characteristic temperatures to higher temperatures. For the 10% Nd3+ sample amorphous phase separation is assumed to exist from the observation of two glass transition temperatures. Spectroscopic properties such as Judd-Ofelt Omega(lambda) intensity parameters, radiative emission probabilities, and induced emission cross sections were calculated. From these results and also from the emission quenching observed as a function of Nd3+ concentration, we suggest that these glasses could be utilized in optical amplifying devices. The chemistry of the pentadentate edta complexes of ruthenium(III) and (II) with 2-mercaptopyridine (HSpy) has been investigated based on spectroscopic, kinetic and electrochemical techniques. The reaction of [Ru(III)(edta)H2O]- with HSpy proceeds with a specific rate of 1.05 × 104 M-1 S -1 (25°C, I = 0.10 M, acetate buffer), forming a red complex (λmax = 550 nm) which undergoes a relaxation process as a function of pH, with an apparent pKa = 4.35 and kobs = 0.31 S -1. The second reaction depends on the concentration of HSpy and leads to a stable green product (λmax = 630 mn). A pronounced enhancement has been observed in the Raman spectra of the complexes, particularly in the region of the metal-ligand vibrations. The electronic and resonance Raman spectra are consistent with the coordination of HSpy via the sulfur atom in the red complex, and with a chelate binding in the green species. © 1987.

We report on first-order micro-Raman and resonant micro-Raman scattering measurements on c-InxGa1-xN (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.31) epitaxial layers. We have found that both, the transverse-optical (TO) and longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons of InxGa1-xN alloy exhibit a one-mode-type behavior. Their frequencies at Γ lie on straight lines connecting the corresponding values obtained for the c-GaN and c-InN binary compounds. Evidence for phase separation is shown in the sample with the alloy composition x = 0.31. The Raman spectra, with excitation energy close to 2.4 eV, show an enhanced additional peak, with frequency between the values found for the LO and TO phonon modes of the C-In0.31Ga0.69N epitaxial layer. We ascribed this peak to the LO phonon mode of a minority phase with In content of ≈0.80.

In this paper we present a Raman-scattering study of the phase transitions in the PbZr1-xTixO3 systems around the morphotropic phase boundary over a wide temperature range. The boundary between rhombohedral and monoclinic phases was found to be a quasivertical line between x = 0.46 and x = 0.47. We also studied the monoclinic-tetragonal phase boundary and our spectroscopic results agree very well with those reported by using x-ray diffraction.

SiO2 (1-x) - TiO2 (x) waveguides, with the mole fraction x in the range 0.07 - 0.20 and thickness of about 0.4 μm, were deposited on silica substrates by a dip-coating technique. The thermal treatments at 700-900°C, used to fully densify the xerogels, produce nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals even for the lowest TiO2 content. The nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals and their growth by thermal annealing up to 1300°C were studied by waveguide Raman spectroscopy, for the SiO2 (0.8) - TiO2 (0.2) composition. By increasing the annealing temperature, the Raman spectrum evolves from that typical of the silica-titania glass to that of anatase, but brookite phase is dominant at intermediate temperatures. In the low. frequency region (5-50 cm-1) of the Raman spectra, acoustic vibrations of the nanocrystals are observed. From the measured line shapes, we can deduce the size distribution of the particles. The results are compared with those obtained from the line widths in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Nanocrystals with a mean size in the range 4-20 nm are obtained, by thermal annealing in a corresponding range of 800-1300°C.

The inelastic scattering of light, Raman scattering, presents a very low cross section. However, the signal can be amplified by several orders of magnitude, leading to the so-called surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) phenomenon. Basically, the SERS effect is achieved when the target molecule (analyte) is adsorbed onto metallic nanoparticles, usually noble metals. This article presents an overview of the applications of SERS to cancer diagnosis and the detection of pesticides, explosives, and drugs (illicit and pharmacological). SERS is routinely applied nowadays to detect and identify analytes at very low concentrations, including for single-molecule detection. However, the application of SERS as an analytical tool requires reliable and reproducible SERS substrates, in terms of enhancement factors, which depends on the size, shape, and aggregation of the metallic nanoparticles. Therefore, the production of reliable and reproducible SERS substrates is a challenge in the field. Besides, the metallic nanoparticles can also induce changes in the system by possible interactions with the analyte under investigation, which must be taken into account. This review will present work in which, under certain specific experimental conditions, SERS has been analytically applied.
