Vacuum ultraviolet excitation spectra of LnAl(3)B(4)O(12):Re (Ln = Y, Gd; Re = Eu, To), along with X-ray photoelectron spectra, were measured. The spectra are tentatively interpreted in terms of the optical properties of the rare earth ions and the band structure. It was found that there is an energy transfer from the hosts to the rare earth ions. It was also found that the top of the valence band in the Gd compound is mainly formed by the 2p levels of O2- and the 4f levels of Gd3+, and in the Y compound mainly by the 2p levels of O2-. The spectroscopic feature of divalent Sm2+, Eu2+, Tm2+ and Yb2+ is discussed in this paper. Especially the spectroscopic properties of some berates containing tetrahedral BO4 group such as SrB4O7, SrB6O10 and BaB8O13 doped with these divalent ions are reported. When the divalent alkaline earth ion in these berates is replaced partially by the above trivalent rare earth ion, the charge carried in the produced defects can be used as reductant to reduce the doped rare earth ion into divalent state at high temperature even in air. Therefore, a convenient and safe method is provided to prepared phosphors doped with these divalent rare earths.

The excitation and emission spectra of the BaLiF3:Ce3+ phosphors synthesized through solid state reaction have been measured. By investigating the properties of the excitation spectra we point out that the variation in the excitation spectra with the amount of CeF3 dopant results from the different patterns of charge compensation in the matrices. The vacancies of Li+ ions are the favorable charge compensation pattern at low concentration of CeF3 doped, but interstitial F- ions are the major charge compensation pattern when the concentration of CeF3 doped goes beyond a certain value. The BaMA(10)O(17) (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Li) system has been synthesized by solid state method and characterized by XRD. The results show that when M is Mg, Zn, Mn, Co, Li, there exists the structure of beta-Al2O3 for BaMAl10O17 system, and when M indicates Cd, beta-Al2O3 structure is formed accompanying alpha-Al2O3 phase, and when M represents Be and Ca, beta-Al2O3 structure cannot be formed. This demonstrates that the condition forming beta-Al2O3 structure compounds for the system BaMAl10O17 is 0.05nm < R-M < 0.09nm (R-M represents the radius of M). The thought that if a M ion can form a stable spinel structure there exsits a corresponding magnetoplumbite and beta-alumina structure is proposed for BaMAl10O17 system according to the experimental results. When M is Li, Be, Zn, Eu2+ activator produces an emission of nearly 450 nm with half height width about 50 nm, when M is Mn, there are simultaneously the emissions of Eu2+ and Mn2+ and the excitation energy of Eu2+ can transfer to Mn2+ in the host, when M is Cd, Eu2+ displays a double-emission band, which can be explained by the Jahn-Teller's effect. It is possible for the system BaMAl10O17 with M being Li, Be, Zn to become blue-emitting component in three colour lamp through further study.

The variations of emission intensities of SrB4O7:Eu2+ and Sr2B5O9Cl:Eu2+ prepared in different atmospheres are discussed in view of the structure of host compounds. A model of substitution defects is proposed to explain the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres of N-2, air and O-2. Experiment results show that SrB4O7:Eu2+ phosphor sample prepared in N-2 atmosphere has an emission intensity of 94% as high as that of the sample prepared in H-2 gas. This implies that the reduction of Eu2+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres could be potentially used in preparing phosphors, such as SrB4O7:Eu2+. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. When CaS:Sm3+, Eu2+ is excited at 476.5 nm (Ar+), the emission spectra taken at room temperature and at 77 K are different, indicating that there are two competitive energy transfer processes-Sm3+ --> Eu2+ and Eu2+ --> Sm3+ with phonon participation. So, the luminescence intensity of Sm3+ increases first, and then decreases as the concentration of Eu2+ is increasing. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The photochromism in CaS:Sm (from white to pink) was observed for the first time by exposing it to ultraviolet light. The experiments results show that the absorption intensity of Sm2+ in the range of 500 similar to 600nm was strongly increased after irradiation. This reveals that there is the valence changing of Sm. If the sample was excited by visible light again, the pink color turned to white, indicating that CaS:Sm has potential application in the field of storage material.

Emission of europium(II) and europium(III) have been observed in SrMgF4 : xEu, yTb phosphors which are synthesized in Ar or Ar/H-2 flow. The valence state of Eu is influenced by terbium. It is notable that the intensities of the ESR peaks corresponding to EU(2+) are regularly changed when terbium ion is incorporated. The typical Tb3d XPS spectrum belonging to Tb4+ is also found when Eu is codoped. This phenomena can be explained by electron transfer mechanism Eu3+ + Tb3+-->EU(2+) + Tb4+. And its equilibrium constant is studied by ESR technique.

The BaB4O7:Eu, Tb phosphors are first synthesized in air atmosphere. We investigate their luminescent properties, and find that europium(II) and europium(III) can coexist in the BaB4O7:Eu phosphor. We observed that the relative intensity of europium(II) is increased when terbium(III) is incorporated. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra are carried out. The intensity of ESR peaks corresponding to europium(II) is also increased when terbium(III) is increased, so the valency state of europium is influenced by terbium(III). We explain these phenomena by an electron transfer mechanism. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

Europium(II) and terbium(LV) drive boon observed in SrMgF4: Eu3+, Tb5+ phosphors which are synthesized in Ar stream. The valence state of europium is influenced by terbium. It is notable that the intensities of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) peaks corresponding to Eu2+ are increased when Tb3+ ion is incorporated in SrMgF4:Eu3+ phosphors, while X-ray photoelectron spectra of Tb-8d5/2 in SrMgF4:Eu3+,Tb3+ shows an additional peak at high energy to that of Tb-3d5/2 in SrMgF4: Tb3+, which is due to Tb4+. These phenomena can be explained by an electron transfer mechanism.

The phosphors MMgF(4)(M = Ca, Sr, Ba) doped with samarium ions are synthesized in different atmospheres using solid phase reaction at high temperature. Samarium has been first stabilized in the divalent state in SrMgF4 and BaMgF4 matrices. Effects of matrices on the valent state of samarium ions are briefly discussed.
