4 bps/Hz 40 Gb/s carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation is investigated for next-generation datacommunication links. The 40 Gb/s link achieves double the length of a conventional NRZ scheme, despite using a low-bandwidth source. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

The usage of subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) techniques to allow link transmission in excess of the specified fiber bandwidth is described. A series of 200-Mbit/s channels with carrier frequencies of up to more than twenty times the 3-dB fiber bandwidth have been successfully used, the maximum being limited by the available electronics. To assess the transmission of the fiber, digitally modulated channels are placed on high frequency carrier signals and then used to modulate a vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL).

Using a compact, integrated device at 2.488Gb/s, simultaneous NRZ to RZ format conversion and regeneration was achieved. The regenerated signal has a negative BER sensitivity of -1.5dB compared with a data signal transmitted down 101km of standard fiber.

The simultaneous all optical 3R regeneration and format conversion in a simple, single integrated device was examined. The integrated device consisted of a semiconductor optical fiber (SOA) monolithically integrated with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser. Gain saturation was employed for the transmission of a data signal regenerated all-optically in the laser/amplifier device. The regeneration of the electrically filtered eye diagrams was observed by noise removal and extinction ratio-improvement by the device.

This paper presents a wavelength coded optical timedomain reflectometry based on optical heterodyne technique. In this scheme, the probe and reference optical pulses have different wavelengths. This enables optical heterodyne detection to be used to improve the system performances significantly. We demonstrate a spatial resolution of 2.5 m within a range of 60 km in weak-reflection signal detection and direct observation of Brillouin scattering over a long optical fiber, suggesting online fiber sensing possible. The principle of wavelength coding is applicable to other systems like lidar and radar to increase receiver sensitivity and simplify system structure.

Frequency response of a fiber ring resonator (FRR) composed of an ordinary optical coupler and a segment of optical fiber is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The frequency response equation based oil small-signal modulation is derived and studied in detail. It is shown that the shape of the frequency response curve is very sensitive to the wavelength; as a result, the FRR can be applied to measure the wavelength of a lightwave source with high resolution. With this method, we demonstrate the measurement of tiny changes of wavelength of a DFB laser. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. Inc. A silicon-on-insulator (SOI) optical fiber-to-waveguide spot-size converter (SSC) overlaid with specially treated silica is investigated for integrated optical circuits. Unlike the conventional process of simply depositing the hot silica on silicon waveguides, two successive layers of silicon dioxide were grown on etched SSC structures by PECVD (plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition). The two layers have 0.8% index contrast and supply stronger cladding for an incident light beam. Additionally, this process is able to reduce the effective refractive index of the input mode to less than 1.47 (extremely close to that of the fiber), substantially weakening the unwanted back reflection. Exploiting this technology, it was demonstrated that the SSC showed a theoretical low mode mismatch loss of 1.23 dB for a TE-like mode and has an experimental coupling efficiency of 66%.

The electronic band structures and optical gains of InAs1-xNx/GaAs pyramid quantum dots (QDs) are calculated using the ten-band k . p model and the valence force field method. The optical gains are calculated using the zero-dimensional optical gain formula with taking into consideration of both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadenings due to the size fluctuation of quantum dots which follows a normal distribution. With the variation of QD sizes and nitrogen composition, it can be shown that the nitrogen composition and the strains can significantly affect the energy levels especially the conduction band which has repulsion interaction with nitrogen resonant state due to the band anticrossing interaction. It facilitates to achieve emission of longer wavelength (1.33 or 1.55 mu m) lasers for optical fiber communication system. For QD with higher nitrogen composition, it has longer emission wavelength and less detrimental effect of higher excited state transition, but nitrogen composition can affect the maximum gain depending on the factors of transition matrix element and the Fermi-Dirac distributions for electrons in the conduction bands and holes in the valence bands respectively. For larger QD, its maximum optical gain is greater at lower carrier density, but it is slowly surpassed by smaller QD as carrier concentration increases. Larger QD can reach its saturation gain faster, but this saturation gain is smaller than that of smaller QD. So the trade-off between longer wavelength, maximum optical, saturation gain, and differential gain must be considered to select the appropriate QD size according to the specific application requirement. We fabricated a phosphor-conversion white light using an InGaN laser diode that emits 445 nm and phosphor that emit in the yellow. The InGaN laser diode was coupled to an optical fiber firstly and the phosphor was excited by the laser light output from the fiber. At 350 mA injection current the luminous flux and the luminous efficacy was 73 lm and 42.7 lm/W, respectively. The luminance was estimated to be 50 cd/mm(2). The relationship of the luminous flux and the luminous efficacy of the white light with injection current were measured and discussed.

A new packaged fiber Bragg grating using bimetal cantilever beam as the strain agent is presented. The grating is two-point attached on one specific surface of the bimetal beam which consists of two metallic material with different thermal-expansion coefficient. Thereby the grating can be compressed or stretched along with the cantilever beam while temperature varies and temperature compensation can be realized. At the same time, grating chirping can be avoided for the particular attaching method. Experiment results demonstrated that the device is able to automatically compensate temperature induced wavelength shift. The temperature dependence of Bragg wavelength reduced to -0.4 pm/degrees C over the temperature range from -20 to 60 degrees C. This fiber grating package technique is cost effective and can be used in strain sensing. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Semiconductor optical amplifier and electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with dual-waveguide spot-size converters at the input and output ports is demonstrated by means of selective area growth, quantum-well intermixing, and asymmetric twin waveguide technologies. At the wavelength range of 1550 similar to 1600 nm, lossless operation with extinction ratios of 25-dB dc and 11.8-dB radio frequency and more than 10-GHz 3-dB modulation bandwidth is successfully achieved. The output beam divergence angles of the device in the horizontal and vertical directions are as small as 7.3 degrees x 10.6 degrees, respectively, resulting in 3.0-dB coupling loss with cleaved single-mode optical fiber.
