Recent experiments have shown that the multimode approach for describing the fission process is compatible with the observed results. Asystematic analysis of the parameters obtained by fitting the fission-fragment mass distribution to the spontaneous and low-energy data has shown that the values for those parameters present a smooth dependence upon the nuclear mass number. In this work, a new methodology is introduced for studying fragment mass distributions through the multimode approach. It is shown that for fission induced by energetic probes (E > 30 MeV) the mass distribution of the fissioning nuclei produced during the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes must be considered in order to have a realistic description of the fission process. The method is applied to study (208)Pb, (238)U, (239)Np and (241)Am fission induced by protons or photons.

Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory provide evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of the cosmic rays with the highest-energies, which are correlated with the positions of relatively nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) [Pierre Auger Collaboration, Science 318 (2007) 938]. The correlation has maximum significance for cosmic rays with energy greater than similar to 6 x 10(19) eV and AGN at a distance less than similar to 75 Mpc. We have confirmed the anisotropy at a confidence level of more than 99% through a test with parameters specified a priori, using an independent data set. The observed correlation is compatible with the hypothesis that cosmic rays with the highest-energies originate from extra-galactic sources close enough so that their flux is not significantly attenuated by interaction with the cosmic background radiation (the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz`min effect). The angular scale of the correlation observed is a few degrees, which suggests a predominantly light composition unless the magnetic fields are very weak outside the thin disk of our galaxy. Our present data do not identify AGN as the sources of cosmic rays unambiguously, and other candidate sources which are distributed as nearby AGN are not ruled out. We discuss the prospect of unequivocal identification of individual sources of the highest-energy cosmic rays within a few years of continued operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We propose a new technique to analyze total reaction cross sections. In this technique, which has been previously applied to fusion reactions, the experimental data are used to build a dimensionless reaction function, which does not depend oil the system size or details of the optical potential. In this way, total reaction cross sections for different systems can be directly compared. We employ this technique to perform a systematic study of reaction cross sections of weakly bound systems in different mass ranges, and compare their reaction functions with the ones of tightly bound systems with similar masses. We show that breakup reactions and neutron transfers in halo systems lead to large reaction functions, well above the ones of typical tightly or weakly bound stable systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. A new technique to analyze fusion data is developed. From experimental cross sections and results of coupled-channel calculations a dimensionless function is constructed. In collisions of strongly bound nuclei this quantity is very close to a universal function of a variable related to the collision energy, whereas for weakly bound projectiles the effects of breakup coupling are measured by the deviations with respect to this universal function. This technique is applied to collisions of stable and unstable weakly bound isotopes.

The elastic channel of the (8)B + (58)Ni system has been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier. An optical potential fi to the experimental angular distributions is obtained. The total reaction cross section consistent with the obtained potential is reported and possible deviations from normal behaviour are discussed.

Cross sections for the (6)Li(p,gamma)(7)Be, (7)Li(n,gamma)(8)Li (8)Li(n,gamma)(9)Li and (8)Li(p,gamma)(9)Be capture reactions have been investigated in the framework of the potential model. The main ingredients of the potential model are the potentials used to generate the continuum and bound-state wave functions and spectroscopic factors of the corresponding bound systems. The spectroscopic factors for the (7)Li circle times n=(8)Li(gs), (8)Li circle times n=(9)Li(gs) bound systems were obtained from a FR-DWBA analysis of neutron transfer reactions induced by (8)Li radioactive beam on a (9)Be target, while spetroscopic factor for the (8)Li circle times n=(9)Be(gs) bound system were obained from a proton transfer reaction. From the obtained capture reaction cross section, reaction rate for the (8)Li(n,gamma)(9)Li and (8)Li(p,gamma)(9)Be direct neutron and proton capture were determined and compared with other experimental and calculated values.

Ultra high energy cosmic ray events presently show a spectrum, which we interpret here as galactic cosmic rays due to a starburst, in the radio galaxy Cen A which is pushed up in energy by the shock of a relativistic jet. The knee feature and the particles with energy immediately higher in galactic cosmic rays then turn into the bulk of ultra high energy cosmic rays. This entails that all ultra high energy cosmic rays are heavy nuclei. This picture is viable if the majority of the observed ultra high energy events come from the radio galaxy Cen A, and are scattered by intergalactic magnetic fields across much of the sky.

In this work we study the contribution of the isoscalar tensor coupling to the realization of pseudospin symmetry in nuclei. Using realistic values for the tensor coupling strength, we show that this coupling reduces noticeably the pseudospin splittings, especially for single-particle levels near the Fermi surface. By using an energy. decomposition of the pseudospin energy splittings, we show that the changes in these splittings come mainly through the changes induced in the lower radial wave function for the low-lying pseudospin partners and through changes in the expectation value of the pseudospin-orbit coupling term for surface partners. This allows us to confirm the conclusion already reached in previous studies, namely that the pseudospin symmetry in nuclei is of a dynamical nature.

The silk glands of bees are a good model for the study of cell death in insects. With the objective to detect the nuclear features during glandular regression stage, larvae at the last instar and pre-pupae were collected and their silk glands were dissected and processed for ultrastructural analysis and histologically for cytochemical and imunocytochemical analysis. The results showed that the cellular nuclei exhibited characteristics of death by atypical apoptosis as well as autophagic cell death. Among the apoptosis characteristic were: nuclear strangulation with bleb formation in some nuclei, DNA fragmentation in most of the nuclei and nucleolar fragmentation. Centripetal chromatin compaction was observed in many nuclei, forming a perichromatin halo differing from typical apoptotic nuclei. With regards to the characteristics of autophagic-programmed cell death, most relevant was the delay in the collapse of many nuclei. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In insects' oocytes, structures called accessory nuclei can be observed. They are similar to the nucleus of the oocyte and have been detected in Hymenoptera as well as in other groups, with their source and functions still under discussion (Cassidy & King 1972). Through the use of histochemical techniques as well as ultrastructural ones, it was possible to observe several accessory nuclei surrounding the oocyte nucleus in the immature oocytes of Pachycondyla (Neoponera) villosa ants. Morphologically they were seen to be round and smaller than the germinal vesicle. When using these histochemical techniques, the only positive reaction was for proteins. Ultrastructurally they have the same morphology as the oocyte nucleus and a fine and electrondense granulation was observed inside them. The function of accessory nuclei in P (Neoponera) villosa is probably as a source of anullate lamellae and as an RNA reservoir in the oocytes. In mature oocytes (stage III), these structures are not observed, suggesting that they disappeared before this stage by releasing their contents into the oocytes' cytoplasm, according to Camargo-Mathias and Caetano (1993).

Cytochemistry studies of the nuclei of the venom glands' cells of worker bees of Apis mellifera indicated that there is a higher activity in the young workers while there is a predominance of degenerative characteristics in the older workers. In addition, we demonstrated that there is an occurrence of differential nuclear synthetic activities between the cells of the distal and the proximal regions of the secretory filament and of the venom reservoir. Signs of a higher nuclear activity were evidenced at the distal regions of this gland in 14-day old workers, while at the more proximal regions of the venom gland of 40-day old workers we identified the most obvious signs of degeneration. Therefore, it was evident that the process of glandular degeneration begins at the distal region of the venom gland instead of beginning at the proximal region as had been established previously. In addition, characteristics of nuclear synthetic activities were noted in the cells of the proximal region of the reservoir; these cells were thought to be non-secretory.

The well-known correlations of low-energy three and four-nucleon observables with a typical three-nucleon scale (e.g., the Tjon line) is extended to light nuclei and nuclear matter. Evidence for the scaling between light nuclei binding energies and the triton one are pointed out. We argue that the saturation energy and density of nuclear matter are correlated to the triton binding energy. The available systematic nuclear matter calculations indicate a possible band structure representing these correlations. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
