gamma delta T-cell receptor-bearing T cells (gamma delta T cells) are readily activated by intracellular bacterial pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacterial antigens responsible for gamma delta T-cell activation remain poorly characterized. We have found that heat treatment of live M. tuberculosis bacilli released into the supernatant an antigen which stimulated human gamma delta T cells, gamma delta T-cell activation was measured by determining the increase in percentage of gamma delta T cells by flow cytometry in peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with antigen and by proliferation of gamma delta T-cell lines with monocytes as antigen-presenting cells. Supernatant from heat-treated M. tuberculosis was fractionated by fast-performance liquid chromatography (FPLC) on a Superose 12 column. Maximal gamma delta T-cell activation was measured for a fraction of 10 to 14 kDa. Separation of the supernatant by preparative isoelectric focusing demonstrated peak activity at a pi of <4.0. On two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, the 10- to 14-kDa FPLC fraction contained at least seven distinct molecules, of which two had a pi of <4.5. Protease treatment reduced the bioactivity of the 10- to 14-kDa FPLC fraction for both resting and activated gamma delta T cells. Murine antibodies raised to the 10- to 14-kDa fraction reacted by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with antigens of 10 to 14 kDa in lysate of M. tuberculosis. In addition, gamma delta T cells proliferated in response to an antigen of 10 to 14 kDa present in M. tuberculosis lysate. gamma delta T-cell-stimulating antigen was not found in culture filtrate of M. tuberculosis but was associated, vith the bacterial pellet and lysate of M. tuberculosis. These results provide a preliminary characterization of a 10- to 14-kDa, cell-associated, heat-stable, low-pI protein antigen of M. tuberculosis which is a major stimulus for human gamma delta T cells.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds of formula Ni1-xAl(x)(OH)2(CO3)x/2 . nH2O (x = 0.1 to 0.25), having the same structure as that of alpha-Ni(OH)2, have been synthesized by substituting nickel hydroxide with aluminum. Of these, the compounds of compositions x greater-than-or-equal-to 0.2 are found to have prolonged stability in strong alkaline medium. The electrodes comprising stabilized alpha-Ni(OH)2 of x = 0.2 composition are rechargeable with discharge-capacity values of 240 (+/- 15) mAh-g-1 and are attractive for applications in various alkaline secondary cells employing nickel-positive electrodes.

An electrochemically impregnated sintered-nickel porous electrode with a capacity of 225 +/- 10 mAh per g of active material has been developed. This capacity is comparable with any state-of-the-art nickel hydroxide electrode reported in the literature, such as the stabilized alpha-nickel hydroxides that contain aluminium, iron and other trivalent cations. A technical update on various types of nickel positive electrodes is given.

Anatase titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been synthesized from P25 TiO2 powder by alkali hydrothermal method followed by post annealing. The microstructure analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the formation of anatase nanotubes with a diameter of 9-10 nm. These NTs are used to make photo anode in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Layer by layer deposition with curing of each layer at 350 C is employed to realize films of desired thickness. The performance of these cells is studied using photovoltaic measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to quantitatively analyze the effect of thickness on the performance of these cells. These studies revealed that the thickness of TiO2 has a pronounced impact on the cell performance and the optimum thickness lies in the range of 10-14 mu m. In comparison to dye solar cells made of P25, TNTs based cells exhibit an improved open circuit voltage and fill factor (FF) due to an increased electron lifetime, as revealed by EIS analysis. Ferroelectric bismuth vanadate Bi2VO5.5 (BVO) thin films have been grown on LaAlO3 (LAO) and SiO2/Si substrates with LaNiO3 (LNO) base electrodes by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The effect of substrate temperature on the ferroelectric properties of BVO thin films, has been studied by depositing the thin films at different temperatures. The BVO thin films grown on LNO/LAO were textured whereas the thin films grown on LNO/SiO2/Si were polycrystalline. The BVO thin films grown at 450?°C exhibited good ferroelectric properties indicating that LNO acts as a good electrode material. The remanent polarization Pr and coercive field Ec obtained for the BVO thin films grown at 450?°C on LNO/LAO and LNO/SiO2/Si were 2.5 ?C/cm2, 37 kV/cm and 4.6?C/cm2, 93 kV/cm, respectively. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

The internal resistance of a stabilized alpha-nickel hydroxide electrode is found to be lower than that of a beta-nickel hydroxide electrode as shown from studies of the open-circuit potential-time transients at all states-of-charge. Nevertheless, the self-discharge rates of the former is higher. Gasometric studies reveal that the charging efficiency of the alpha-nickel hydroxide electrode is higher than that of the beta-nickel hydroxide electrode.

In the present work a gold modified pencil graphite electrode (GPGE) was used for the determination of L-dopa present in the aqueous extracts of Mucuna pruriens seeds (MPS), Mucuna pruriens leaves (MPL) and Commercial Siddha Product (CSP). The GPGE shows excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of both L-dopa and ascorbic acid (AA), with the separation of peak potential of 98 mV. The differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) results indicated that the detection limit for L-dopa was 1.54 mu M (S/N=3). This method can be successfully applied for the determination of L-dopa in real samples.

Double hydroxides of the formula, Ni1-xZn2x (OH)(2) (CO3)(x). nH(2)O (x = 0.1 to 0.25) having the same structure as that of alpha-nickel hydroxide have been synthesized by partial substitution of zinc for nickel. The hydroxide having the composition x = 0.25 exhibits prolonged stability in 6 M KOH. Pasted electrodes comprising this material are rechargeable with a stabilized reversible discharge capacity of 410 +/- 15 mAh g(-1) of nickel even under suboptimal conditions of electrode fabrication. This compares favorably with the capacity values achieved for beta-nickel hydroxide (221 mAh g(-1)', This work; 297 mAh g(-1), Delahaye-Vidal and Figlarz;(1) 456 mAh g(-1), theoretical). The existence of an optimal feedback law is established for the risk-sensitive optimal control problem with denumerable state space. The main assumptions imposed are irreducibility and a near monotonicity condition on the one-step cost function. A solution can be found constructively using either value iteration or policy iteration under suitable conditions on initial feedback law.

An attempt has been made to study the film-substrate interface by using a sensitive, non- conventional tool. Because of the prospective use of gate oxide in MOSFET devices, we have chosen to study alumina films grown on silicon. Film-substrate interface of alumina grown by MOCVD on Si(100) was studied systematically using spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range 1.5-5.0 eV, supported by cross-sectional SEM, and SIMS. The (ε1,ε2) versus energy data obtained for films grown at 600°C, 700°C, and 750°C were modeled to fit a substrate/interface/film “sandwich”. The experimental results reveal (as may be expected) that the nature of the substrate -film interface depends strongly on the growth temperature. The simulated (ε1,ε2) patterns are in excellent agreement with observed ellipsometric data. The MOCVD precursors results the presence of carbon in the films. Theoretical simulation was able to account for the ellipsometry data by invoking the presence of “free” carbon in the alumina films.

Homogeneous composite thin films of Fe2O3-carbon nanotube were synthesized in a novel, single-step process by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using ferric acetyl acetonate as precursor. The deposition of composite takes place in a narrow range of CVD conditions, beyond which the deposition either multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) only or hematite (α-Fe2O3) only takes place. The composite film formed on stainless steel substrates were tested for their supercapacitive properties in various aqueous electrolytes.

Context-sensitive points-to analysis is critical for several program optimizations. However, as the number of contexts grows exponentially, storage requirements for the analysis increase tremendously for large programs, making the analysis non-scalable. We propose a scalable flow-insensitive context-sensitive inclusion-based points-to analysis that uses a specially designed multi-dimensional bloom filter to store the points-to information. Two key observations motivate our proposal: (i) points-to information (between pointer-object and between pointer-pointer) is sparse, and (ii) moving from an exact to an approximate representation of points-to information only leads to reduced precision without affecting correctness of the (may-points-to) analysis. By using an approximate representation a multi-dimensional bloom filter can significantly reduce the memory requirements with a probabilistic bound on loss in precision. Experimental evaluation on SPEC 2000 benchmarks and two large open source programs reveals that with an average storage requirement of 4MB, our approach achieves almost the same precision (98.6%) as the exact implementation. By increasing the average memory to 27MB, it achieves precision upto 99.7% for these benchmarks. Using Mod/Ref analysis as the client, we find that the client analysis is not affected that often even when there is some loss of precision in the points-to representation. We find that the NoModRef percentage is within 2% of the exact analysis while requiring 4MB (maximum 15MB) memory and less than 4 minutes on average for the points-to analysis. Another major advantage of our technique is that it allows to trade off precision for memory usage of the analysis.

A force-torque sensor capable of accurate measurement of the three components of externally applied forces and moments is required for force control in robotic applications involving assembly operations. The goal in this paper is to design a Stewart platform based force torque sensor at a near-singular configuration sensitive to externally applied moments. In such a configuration, we show an enhanced mechanical amplification of leg forces and thereby higher sensitivity for the applied external moments. In other directions, the sensitivity will be that of a normal load sensor determined by the sensitivity of the sensing element and the associated electronic amplification, and all the six components of the force and torque can be sensed. In a sensor application, the friction, backlash and other non-linearities at the passive spherical joints of the Stewart platform will affect the measurements in unpredictable ways. In this sensor, we use flexural hinges at the leg interfaces of the base and platform of the sensor. The design dimensions of the flexure joints in the sensor have been arrived at using FEA. The sensor has been fabricated, assembled and instrumented. It has been calibrated for low level loads and is found to show linearity and marked sensitivity to moments about the three orthogonal X, Y and Z axes. This sensor is compatible for usage as a wrist sensor for a robot under development at ISRO Satellite Centre.

In this study we have employed multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), decorated with platinum as catalytic layer for the reduction of tri-iodide ions in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). MWCNTs have been prepared by a simple one step pyrolysis method using ferrocene as the catalyst and xylene as the carbon source. Platinum decorated MWCNTs have been prepared by chemical reduction method. The as prepared MWCNTs and Pt/MWCNTs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In combination with a dye adsorbed TiO(2) photoanode and an organic liquid electrolyte, Pt/MWCNT composite showed an enhanced short circuit current density of 16.12 mA/cm(2) leading to a cell efficiency of 6.50% which is comparable to that of Platinum. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of Active Fiber Composites (AFC) as sensors for detecting damage, a pretwisted strip made of AFC with symmetric free-edge delamination is considered in this paper. The strain developed on the top/bottom of the strip is measured to detect and assess delamination. Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) is used in the development of a non-classical non-linear cross sectional model of the strip. The original three dimensional (3D) problem is simplified by the decomposition into two simpler problems: a two-dimensional (2D) problem, which provides in a compact form the cross-sectional properties using VAM, and a non-linear one-dimensional (1D) problem along the length of the beam. This procedure gives the non-linear stiffnesses, which are very sensitive to damage, at any given cross-section of the strip. The developed model is used to study a special case of cantilevered laminated strip with antisymmetric layup, loaded only by an axial force at the tip. The charge generated in the AFC lamina is derived in closed form in terms of the 1D strain measures. It is observed that delamination length and location have a definite influence on the charge developed in the AFC lamina. Also, sensor voltage output distribution along the length of the beam is obtained using evenly distributed electrode strip. These data could in turn be used to detect the presence of damage.
