A population-based study was conducted to validate gender- and age-specific indexes of socio-economic status (SES) and to investigate the associations between these indexes and a range of health outcomes in 2 age cohorts of women. Data from 11,637 women aged 45 to 50 and 9,5 10 women aged 70 to 75 were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis produced four domains of SES among the mid-aged cohort (employment, family unit, education, and migration) and four domains among the older cohort (family unit, income, education, and migration). Overall, the results supported the factor structures derived from another population-based study (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1995), reinforcing the argument that SES domains differ across age groups. In general, the findings also supported the hypotheses that women with low SES would have poorer health outcomes than higher SES women, and that the magnitude of these effects would differ according to the specific SES domain and by age group, with fewer and smaller differences observed among older women. The main exception was that in the older cohort, the education domain was significantly associated with specific health conditions. Results suggest that relations between SES and health are highly complex and vary by age, SES domain, and the health outcome under study.

In this paper, we present the results of a qualitative study of subordinate perceptions of leaders. The study represents a preliminary test of a model based on Affective Events Theory, which posits that leaders who are seen to be effective shape the affective events that determine employees' attitudes and behaviours in the workplace. Within this framework, we argue that effective leaders ameliorate employees' hassles by providing frequent, small emotional uplifts. The resulting positive affective states are then proposed to lead to more positive employee attitudes and behaviours, and more positive regard for the leader. Importantly, leaders who demonstrate these ameliorating behaviours are likely to require high levels of emotional intelligence, defined in terms of the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions in self and others. To investigate this model, we conducted interviews and focus groups with 10 leaders and 24 employees. Results confirmed that these processes do indeed exist in the workplace. In particular, leaders who were seen by employees to provide continuous small emotional uplifts were consistently held to be the most effective. Study participants were especially affected by negative events (or hassles). Leaders who failed to deal with hassles or, worse still, were the source of hassles, were consistently seen to be less effective. We conclude with a discussion of implications for practicing managers, and suggest that our exploratory findings provide justification for emotional intelligence training as a means to improve leader perceptions and effectiveness. Objective: To explore relationships between physical activity and mental health cross-sectionally and longitudinally in a large cohort of older Australian women. Method: Women in their 70s participating in the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health responded in 1996 (aged 70-75) and in 1999 (aged 73-78). Cross-sectional data were analyzed for 10,063 women and longitudinal data for 6472. Self-reports were used to categorize women into four categories of physical activity at each time point as well as to define four physical activity transition categories across the 3-year period. Outcome variables for the cross-sectional analyses were the mental health component score (MCS) and mental health subscales of the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-36). The longitudinal analyses focused on changes in these variables. Confounders included the physical health component scale (PCS) of the SF-36, marital status, body mass index (BMI) and life events. Adjustment for baseline scores was included for the longitudinal analyses. Results: Cross-sectionally, higher levels of physical activity were associated with higher scores on all dependent variables, both with and without adjustment for confounders. Longitudinally, the effects were weaker, but women who had made a transition from some physical activity to none generally showed more negative changes in emotional well-being than those who had always been sedentary, while those who maintained or adopted physical activity had better outcomes. Conclusion: Physical activity is associated with emotional well-being among a population cohort of older women both cross-sectionally and longitudinally, supporting the need for the promotion of appropriate physical activity in this age group. Background: Gestational trophoblastic disease is a fascinating group of pregnancy disorders characterised by abnormal proliferation of trophoblast, ranging from benign to malignant. Because the disease is uncommon, there is a need to formulate management with the assistance of collective information. Methodology: A review of available information from English written literature was undertaken especially data reported by registries around the world (Charing Cross Hospital in England, the North-western University and the New England area in the USA as well as our own experience in Queensland, Australia). Where possible, collated data from relevant studies were analysed to answer some of the questions posed in clinical practice, with reference to metastatic disease to liver and brain, twinning of molar gestation and coexisting fetus, and placental-site tumour. Results: We found that molar gestation can be classified according to its clinical presentation which influences the time taken to reach human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 'negativity' and the risk of persisting disease. Categorisation of risk is the basis for choice of chemotherapy to achieve good outcomes. Metastases to liver and brain remain problems in management; the development of 'new' metastases during chemotherapy is a very poor prognostic factor. In the variant of twinning with molar gestation and coexisting fetus, it is important to elucidate the fetal karyotype in planning management: a 69XXX fetus is not salvageable but a normal 46XX or 46XY fetus faces the prospect of early preterm delivery. The placental-site tumour is very rare; localised disease is curable by surgery; chemotherapy is less effective in disseminated disease. From collated worldwide data, the recurrence rate after one mole is 1.3% and after two or more is 20%. Reproductive outcome in subsequent pregnancies, even after multidrug chemotherapy, is not different from the general population. Because of the increased risk long-term of second tumours after multidrug chemotherapy a closer surveillance of these patients is necessary Conclusion: In general, the disease in its persisting or malignant form is 'a cancer model par excellence' because of an identifiable precursor condition, a reliable HCG marker, and sensitivity of the disease to cytotoxic drugs. With current management, retention of fertility is possible and normal reproductive outcome assured.

This paper investigates the possible link between non-workplace cadmium (Cd) exposure, cytochrome P450 expression and hypertension. We present results of our investigation into the relationships between liver and kidney Cd burdens and the abundance of the CYP isoform 4A11. Our data show associations between non-workplace Cd exposure and changes in the abundance of hepatic and renal cortical CYP4A11. In liver the levels of immunochemically detectable CYP4A11 were positively correlated with tissue Cd content while in contrast CYP4A11 abundance was inversely correlated with kidney Cd burden. These differences are most likely related to the different Cd burden of the tissues. These observations suggest the potential for involvement of Cd as a mediator of CYP4A11 expression in kidney cortex and indicate that elevations in kidney Cd content may be involved in hypertension via alteration of the expression of this particular isoform. Potential mechanisms by which Cd may alter CYP4A11 expression are discussed briefly. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The presence of toxic cyanobacteria in drinking water reservoirs renders the need to develop treatment methods for the 'safe' removal of their associated toxins. Chlorine has been shown to successfully remove a range of cyanotoxins including microcystins, cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxins. Each cyanotoxin requires specific treatment parameters, particularly solution pH and free chlorine residual. However, currently there has not been any investigation into the toxicological effect of solutions treated for the removal of these cyanotoxins by chlorine. Using the P53(def) transgenic mouse model mate and female C57BL/6J hybrid mice were used to investigate potential cancer inducing effects from such oral dosing solutions. Both purified cyanotoxins and toxic cell-free extract cyanobacterial solutions were chlorinated and administered over 90 and 170 days (respectively) in drinking water. No increase in cancer was found in any treatment. The parent cyanotoxins, microcystins, cylindrospermopsin and saxitoxins were readily removed by chlorine. There was no significant increase in the disinfection byproducts trihalomethanes or haloacetic acids, levels found were well below guideline values. Histological examination identified no effect of treatment solutions except male mice treated with chlorinated cylindrospermopsin (as a cell free extract). In this instance 40% of males were found to have fatty vacuolation in their livers, cause unknown. It is recommended that further toxicology be undertaken on chlorinated cyanobacterial solutions, particularly for non-genotoxic carcinogenic compounds, for example the Tg. AC transgenic mouse model. Muitos alimentos são conhecidos apenas em alguns grupos humanos, por diversas razões. Outros, entretanto, tornaram-se praticamente universais, sendo conhecidos e apreciados em quase todas as sociedades humanas com condições econômicas que permitam sua inclusão no âmbito do comércio internacional. Um deles, em especial, está no foco de interesse da presente investigação. Não se trata de alimento relevante para a composição dos hábitos alimentares cotidianos em qualquer grupo humano, mas que ocupa posição privilegiada em termos de preferência em diferentes lugares do mundo: o chocolate. O presente trabalho buscou conhecer e analisar fatores que influenciam o consumo de chocolate de um conjunto de pessoas e as modalidades de explicação ou justificação que apresentam para o seu padrão de consumo e para o tipo de interesse que têm pelo chocolate. Para a coleta de dados foi utilizado um questionário com 62 questões fechadas e 1 questão aberta - que utilizou a técnica da evocação. Participaram 313 homens e mulheres, a maioria na faixa etária entre 16 e 25 anos. Foram exploradas variáveis como situação sócio-econômica, peso corporal, estado de saúde, frequência e quantidade de chocolate consumido, preferência em relação ao consumo de alimentos em geral, além de terem sido verificadas quais situações os participantes admitem estarem associadas a variações no padrão de consumo de chocolate, tendo sido incluídas tanto situações estressantes quanto relaxantes. Foram abordados também alguns pontos considerados controversos a respeito do consumo de chocolate, que são objeto de interesse científico e merecem grande atenção dos meios de comunicação. Houve interesse especial na discussão das diferenças encontradas quando os padrões de consumo de homens e mulheres são comparados. Ficou evidente, no grupo de participantes, que a influência de muitos dos aspectos considerados sobre o consumo do chocolate não se processam de forma idêntica sobre homens e mulheres. Confirma-se a grande difusão cultural da ideia de que mulheres comem mais chocolate que homens e que a seleção de alimentos feminina é mais sensível a fatores associados a variações de estados afetivos, o que pode ter papel na discussão de dependências e transtornos alimentares. Em consonância com a literatura sobre comportamento alimentar, os dados apoiam a proposição de que é insuficiente considerar apenas fatores culturais ou biológicos, de maneira isolada, para explicar os motivos que levam ao consumo de determinados alimentos.

Esta tese apresenta os resultados da pesquisa que teve como objetivo analisar como os trabalhadores vivenciam os efeitos subjetivos produzidos pelo processo de trabalho de um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Álcool e Drogas (CAPSad). A pesquisa foi realizada sob uma abordagem qualitativa, em um CAPSad do município de Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. A coleta de dados se deu por meio de cinco etapas: 1. Análise documental das políticas vigentes sobre uso de drogas; 2. Análise de prontuários; 3. Entrevista coletiva com dez trabalhadores; 4. Oitenta horas de observação do cotidiano de trabalho; 5. Entrevista em profundidade com treze trabalhadores. Para análise de dados foi utilizada a técnica da Análise Temática. Constatamos que no plano das políticas sobre o assunto,há prevalência de ideias relacionadas à repressão dos usuários, apesar da tentativa do Ministério da Saúde (MS) em abordar a redução de danos como uma estratégia que valoriza o sujeito e sua singularidade. A análise ainda apontou as dificuldades que os profissionais enfrentam neste município para atuar segundo as diretrizes do MS, uma vez que as ações municipais dão ênfase à repressão, à religiosidade e ao amedrontamento como estratégia de prevenção, com apoio da justiça e da polícia. Enfatizamos que tais ambiguidades repercutem no trabalho e para o trabalhador. Apontamos ainda outros aspectos que geram efeitos para os trabalhadores: condições de trabalho precárias (devido à estrutura do serviço, baixos salários e rede de atenção inexistente), falta de reconhecimento (devido à omissão da gerência e à ausência de normas) e sobrecarga (devido à falta de profissionais e aos conflitos nas divisões de tarefas). Essas situações levam a efeitos subjetivos como: desgaste, adoecimento, medo, incapacidade de agir, apatia, desvalorização, desmotivação e no aprisionamento do trabalhador. Notamos que estes efeitos são todos negativos e que os profissionais os vivenciam por meio do distanciamento afetivo no processo de trabalho, o que repercute negativamente na possibilidade de produção de um cuidado efetivo. Sugerimos que haja investimentos na formação de todos os trabalhadores que atuam nesse local, com foco na educação permanente, uma vez que por meio desta há o incentivo da aprendizagem e o enfrentamento criativo dos efeitos vivenciados no cotidiano.É preciso que haja diálogo, seja entre os trabalhadores e a gestão, entre os próprios trabalhadores e entre trabalhadores e usuários.

The HCI community is actively seeking novel methodologies to gain insight into the user’s experience during interaction with both the application and the content. We propose an emotional recognition engine capable of automatically recognizing a set of human emotional states using psychophysiological measures of the autonomous nervous system, including galvanic skin response, respiration, and heart rate. A novel pattern recognition system, based on discriminant analysis and support vector machine classifiers is trained using movies’ scenes selected to induce emotions ranging from the positive to the negative valence dimension, including happiness, anger, disgust, sadness, and fear. In this paper we introduce an emotion recognition system and evaluate its accuracy by presenting the results of an experiment conducted with three physiologic sensors.

Emotions play a central role in our daily lives, influencing the way we think and act, our health and sense of well-being, and films are by excellence the form of art that exploits our affective, perceptual and intellectual activity, holding the potential for a significant impact. Video is becoming a dominant and pervasive medium, and online video a growing entertainment activity on the web and iTV, mainly due to technological developments and the trends for media convergence. In addition, the improvement of new techniques for gathering emotional information about videos, both through content analysis or user implicit feedback through user physiological signals complemented in manual labeling from users, is revealing new ways for exploring emotional information in videos, films or TV series, and brings out new perspectives to enrich and personalize video access. In this work, we reflect on the power that emotions have in our lives, on the emotional impact of movies, and on how to address this emotional dimension in the way we classify and access movies, by exploring and evaluating the design of iFelt in its different ways to classify, access, browse and visualize movies based on their emotional impac
