Siloxane-polymethyl methacrylate hybrid films containing functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were deposited by dip-coating on carbon steel substrates from a sol prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-methacryloxy propyl-trimethoxysilane, followed by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane. The correlation between the structural properties and corrosion protection efficiency was studied as a function of the molar ratio of nanotubes carbon to silicon, varied in the range between 0.1% and 5%. 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric measurements have shown that hybrids containing carbon nanotubes have a similar degree of polycondensation and thermal stability as the undoped matrix and exhibit and excellent adhesion to the substrate. Microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed a very good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix and the presence of carboxylic groups allowing covalent bonding with the end-siloxane nodes. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate that CNTs containing coatings maintain the excellent corrosion protection efficiency of the hybrids, showing even a superior performance in acidic solution. The nanocomposite structure acts as efficient corrosion barrier, increasing the total impedance by 4 orders of magnitude and reducing the current densities by more than 3 orders of magnitude, compared to the bare steel electrode. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The glassy carbon is a material with a huge technological evolution. Due to its lightness, biocompatibility and their thermal and electrical properties this material finds applications in several industrial fields such as electronics, medical, aerospace and chemical. In order to explore the conductive properties of glassy carbon for use as modified electrodes, the present work aims the processing of monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon with colloidal copper for use in electrochemical applications. First, the best parameters for the cure of furfuryl alcohol resin doped were established through viscosimetry measurements and pressurized differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis of the micrographs of the cured resins show that copper concentrations above 3% weight, generate higher porosity in the material. The characterizations of the monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon resulting from carbonization were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and although it was not possible to detect the presence of copper by SEM, the influence of these particles have been observed by Raman and FT-IR spectra and electrochemical behavior of the material. The decrease in conductivity of monolithic and reticulated glassy carbon in the presence of copper may be related to the defects caused by the presence of copper in the structure of the material.

Among the many methods developed for the synthesis of titanium dioxide, cathodic electrosynthesis has not received much attention because the resulting amorphous oxy-hydroxide matrix demands a further thermal annealing step to be transformed into crystalline titania. However, the possibility of filling deep recessed templates by the control of the solidliquid interface makes it a potentially suitable technique for the fabrication of porous scaffolds for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Furthermore, a careful control of the crystallization process enables the growth of larger grains with lower density of grain boundaries, which act as electron traps that slow down electronic transport and promote charge recombination. In this report, well crystallized titania deposits were obtained by thermal annealing of amorphous deposits fabricated by cathodically assisted electrosynthesis on indium-tin oxide (ITO)substrates. The combined use of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the crystallization process is more intricate than previously assumed. It is shown that the amorphous matrix evolves into a rutile-free mixture of brookite and anatase at temperatures as low as 200 degrees C that persists up to 800 degrees C, when pure anatase dominates. The amount of brookite in the brookiteanatase mixture reaches a maximum at 400 degrees C. This very simple method for obtaining a brookiteanatase mixture and the ability to tune their proportions by thermal annealing is a promising alternative whose potential for solar cells and photocatalysis deserves a careful evaluation. Improving the charge capacity, electrochemical reversibility and stability of anode materials are main challenges for the development of Ni-based rechargeable batteries and devices. The combination of cobalt, as additive, and electrode material nanostructuration revealed a very promising approach for this purpose. The new alpha-NiCo mixed hydroxide based electrodes exhibited high specific charge/discharge capacity (355-714 C g(-1)) and outstanding structural stability, withstanding up to 700 redox cycles without any significant phase transformation, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and X-ray diffractometry. In short, the nanostructured alpha-NiCo mixed hydroxide materials possess superior electrochemical properties and stability, being strong candidates for application in high performance batteries and devices. Polymer electrolytes (PEs) are currently the focus of much attention as potential electrolytes in electrochemical devices such as batteries, display devices and sensors. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as an important biological macromolecule has electric conducting electrochemical properties and unique three dimensional structures. With the goal of developing a new family of environmentally friendly multifunctional biohybrid materials displaying simultaneously high ionic conductivity we have produced in the present work, flexible films based on DNA, incorporating ionic liquids (ILs). Over the last decade ILs have been employed as a new media in electrochemistry and electroanalysis. The materials studied here have been characterized by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Complex Impedance Spectroscopy and Cyclic Voltammetry. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work consisted in the preparation of platinum-based catalysts supported on carbon (Vulcan XC-72) and investigation of their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Catalysts of the C/Pt-Ni-Sn-Me (Me = Ru or Ir) type were prepared by the Pechini method at temperature of 350 degrees C. Four different compositions were homemade: C/Pt60Sn10Ni30, C/Pt60Sn10Ni20Ru10, C/Pt60Sn10Ni10Ru20, and C/Pt60Sn10Ni10Ir20. These catalysts were electrochemically and physically characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) in the presence of glycerol 1.0 mol dm(-3), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). XRD results showed the main peaks of face-centered cubic Pt. The particle sizes obtained from XRD and HRTEM experiments were close to values ranging from 3 to 8.5 nm. The CV results indicate behavior typical of Pt-based catalysts in acid medium. The CV and CA data reveal that quaternary catalysts present the highest current density for the electrooxidation of glycerol.

The control of the properties of materials at the molecular level is pursued for many applications, especially those associated with nanostructures. In this paper, we show that the coordination compound [Ni(dmit)(2)], where (dmit) is the 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate ligand, can induce doping of poly(2-methoxyaniline) (POMA) in molecularly ordered Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Doping was associated with interactions between the components and the compression of the Langmuir film at the air-water interface, according to polarization-modulated infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) data. Taking these results together with in situ UV-Vis absorption measurements, we could identify the molecular groups involved in the interaction, including the way they were reoriented upon film compression. The Langmuir films were sufficiently stable to be transferred as Y-type LB films, while the hybrid POMA/[Ni(dmit)(2)] films remain doped in the solid state. As expected, the molecular charges affected the film morphology, as observed from combined atomic and electric force microscopy measurements. In summary, with adequate spectroscopy and microscopy tools we characterized molecular-level interactions, which may allow one to design molecular electronic devices with controlled electrical properties.

Silver containing heavy metal oxide glasses and glass ceramics of the system WO3-SbPO4-PbO-AgCl with different AgCl contents have been prepared and their thermal, structural and optical properties characterized. Glass ceramics containing metallic silver nanoparticles have been prepared by annealing glass samples at temperatures above the glass transition and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The presence of the metallic clusters has been also confirmed by the observation of a surface plasmon resonimce band in the visible range. Cyclic voltammetric measurements indicated the presence of metallic silver into the glasses, even before to perform the thermal treatment.
