Evidence of altered prefrontal-thalamic circuitry in schizophrenia: An optimised diffusion MRI study

MRI diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), optimized for measuring the trace of the diffusion tensor, was used to investigate microstructural changes in the brains of 12 individuals with schizophrenia compared with 12 matched control subjects. To control for the effects of anatomic variation between subject groups, all participants' diffusion images were non-linearly registered to standard anatomical space. Significant statistical differences in mean diffusivity (MD) measures between the two groups were determined on a pixel-by-pixel basis, using Gaussian random field theory. We found significantly elevated MD measures within temporal, parietal and prefrontal cortical regions in the schizophrenia group (P > 0.001), especially within the medial frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate. The dorsal medial and anterior nucleus of the thalamus, including the caudate, also exhibited significantly increased MD in the schizophrenia group (P > 0.001). This study has shown for the first time that MD measures offer an alternative strategy for investigating altered prefrontal-thalamic circuitry in schizophrenia. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. Historicamente, em nosso contexto educacional, a atuação de docentes na Educação Infantil (EI) e nas Séries Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental (SIEF) sempre esteve relacionada a um predomínio feminino, porém, muito recentemente, é possível observar um movimento de entrada de alunos do sexo masculino nos cursos de Pedagogia e, consequentemente, em salas de aula na EI e SIEF. Nesse contexto, a presente pesquisa investigou os desafios enfrentados por esses sujeitos que se inserem em um universo predominantemente feminino, buscando desvelar se há indícios de preconceito ou mesmo de estigma, relacionados às questões de gênero. Para tanto, contou com sujeitos homens na graduação em Pedagogia, professores homens na Educação Infantil e nas Séries Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental, atuantes no estado de SP, na capital e cidades do entorno. Com uma breve revisão bibliográfica sobre o conceito de gênero e suas relações e, também, acerca da feminização do magistério, a pesquisa objetivou compreender e problematizar os significados entre as relações de gênero dos locais nos quais se inserem os sujeitos pesquisados. De maneira específica, a investigação buscou responder às seguintes indagações relacionadas aos alunos de pedagogia e aos professores: Por que a escolha pelo curso de Pedagogia? Por que estudar/atuar em um campo predominantemente feminino, podendo, assim, sofrer preconceito? Ser homem nesse campo muda o significado da formação e atuação? Para responder a essas inquietações, a dissertação foi composta por metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa, com a aplicação de questionário para elaboração de perfil, além de entrevistas gravadas com um roteiro previamente estruturado. Foram entrevistados 22 sujeitos: 10 (5 homens e 5 mulheres) são alunos e alunas de cursos de Pedagogia e 12 (6 homens e 6 mulheres) são professores e professoras em escolas de EI e SIEF. As análises realizadas apontam que, de um modo geral, a entrada dos homens na pedagogia e a sua reinserção no exercício docente nesses segmentos da educação provocam reações de preconceito e estigma. Ao constatar isso, nossa indagação ficou em torno de buscar como essas reações ocorrem para com os sujeitos entrevistados, discutindo as relações de gênero, e masculinidade em ambientes feminizados. Através dessas discussões, trouxemos uma pequena contribuição para a área acadêmica, no que diz respeito à masculinidade e docência.

A study was made to determine the conditions under which the optimum droplet size distribution (ie., narrowest size range with a minimum of fines and over-sized agglomerates), is generated in sprays from centrifugal pressure nozzles. A range of non-Newtonian detergent slurries were tested but the results are of wider application and parallel work was undertaken with water, ionic solutions and chalk slurries. Six centrifugal pressure nozzles were used and the drop-size distributions correlated as a function of fluid properties, pressure, fiowrate, feed temperature, and nozzle characteristics. Measurements were made using a Malvern Particle Size Anayser slung across a specially-designed transparent tower section of approximately 1.2m diameter in order to reduce obscuration caused by the spray and improve existing droplet sizing techniques. The results obtained were based upon the Rosin-Rammler distribution model and the Size Analyser provided a direct print-out of size distribution and the parameters characterising it. A Spraying System nozzle, AAASSTC8-8, produced the optimum spray distribution with the detergent slurry at a temperature of 60°C whilst operating at 1200 psi. With other fluids the Delevan 2.2SJ nozzle produced the optimum spray distribution operating at 1200 psi but with the Spraying Systems nozzles there was no clear-cut optimum set of conditions, ie. the nozzle and pressure varied depending upon the fluid being sprayed. The mechanisms of liquid sheet break-up and droplet dispersion were investigated in specially-constructed, scaled-up, transparent nozzles. A mathematical model of centrifugal pressure nozzle atomisation was developed based upon fundamental operating parameters rather than resorting to empirical correlations. This enabled theoretical predictions to be made over a wide range of operating conditions and nozzle types. The model predictions for volumetric fiowrate, liquid sheet length and air core diameter showed good agreement with the experimentally determined results. However, the model predicted smaller droplet sizes than were produced experimentally due to inaccuracies identified in the initial assumptions.

The casing layer is an essential component of the system employed in the culture of Agaricus bisporus. The literature appropriate to the casing layer is fully reviewed, including aspects relating to fructification and morphogenesis in A.bisporus, together with an appraisal of the various media employed, their properties and functions, and the commercial significance of the casing layer. Equipment is described for use in experiments in mushroom culture, based on a scaled-down version of normal growing technique, allowing the analysis of both weights and number of fruitbodies forming, which was useful in assessing the effects of different casing treatments. The basic steps in the production of fruitbodies in A.bisporus.are described, including a photographic study of the colonisation of casing and fructification. Various alterations to the physical structure of peat/chalk casing mixtures were found to have an effect on fructification; those causing an opening-out of the casing structure tended to give better yields, especially in the early stages of production. It was shown that, in order to obtain greater yield through casing amendment, fructification must be stimulated, giving increased numbers of fruitbodies, disproportionate to their total weight and consequently of lower mean weight. A synthetic casing medium based on the light glass-like mineral, perlite, was developed. The best formula obtained was -.1 part perlite: 1 part montmorillonite clay (by weight): 3 parts 0.01% glucose solution. Perlite/montmorillonite casing could be improved by adding compost colonised by mycelium of A.bisporus, or adding a peat-chalk casing extract. Perlite was also found to be suitable for admixture with the standard casing medium and a mixture of equal parts by volume performed as well as the peat/chalk casing normally used.

Effluent from pulp and paper production at the Kemsley mill of Bowaters U.K. Paper Company Limited passes through two treatment stages before its discharge into the Swale estuary. Suspended material removed during treatment is deposited on wasteground as a thin sludge. The solids it contains are mainly wood components lost during pulp production, whilst it also has a high salt content, derived from chemicals used in pulping processes. After deposition the sludge undergoes an ageing process during which it dries out and its salt content is reduced. This ageing can be reproduced and accelerated by improved drainage under controlled conditions. The paper mill sludge was investigated as a casing medium in the culture of Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Pilat, the cultivated mushroom. It was unsuitable up to one year from deposition due largely to the inhibitory effect of its salt content on fruiting. Material eighteen months or more in age gave yields comparable to standard peat casing. Before use as a casing the material must be shredded to a satisfactory structure, neutralised with chalk, and pasteurised to eliminate organisms harmful to the crop. The prepared medium has a high water holding capacity and a structure resilient to management procedures, important requirements of a good casing. A passive movement of salts from the compost to the casing was shown to occur during culture, capable of enhancing the natural decline in cropping if sufficiently great. The ions chloride, potassium, sodium and sulphate were shown to be responsible, their damaging effects being due to high conductivity created in the casing. Studies of elements available during culture suggested phosphate availability in the compost could limit crop potential, whilst iron released by mycelium of A.bisporus in the casing may be utilised by associated micro-organisms.

Audio feedback remains little used in most graphical user interfaces despite its potential to greatly enhance interaction. Not only does sonic enhancement of interfaces permit more natural human-computer communication but it also allows users to employ an appropriate sense to solve a problem rather than having to rely solely on vision. Research shows that designers do not typically know how to use sound effectively; subsequently, their ad hoc use of sound often leads to audio feedback being considered an annoying distraction. Unlike the design of purely graphical user interfaces for which guidelines are common, the audio-enhancement of graphical user interfaces has (until now) been plagued by a lack of suitable guidance. This paper presents a series of empirically substantiated guidelines for the design and use of audio-enhanced graphical user interface widgets.
