Siliceous mesostructured cellular foam with three-dimensional (3D) wormhole structure (MSU-type) is prepared by using triblock copolymer (poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b- styrene), SBS) with both hydrophobic head and tail group as template in strong acid condition via microemulsion method. The effects of SBS addition and temperature on the morphology and physicochemical properties, such as pore diameters, surface areas and pore volumes of the materials have been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. The results show that the pore volumes, pore sizes and specific surface areas depend strongly on the SBS amount and forming micelles temperature. Moreover, the materials obtained with high wall thickness exhibit a relatively good thermal stability.

The surface morphology and crystallization behavior of a weakly segregated symmetric diblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-6-caprolactone) (PS-b-PCL), in thin films were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). When the samples were annealed in the molten state, surface-induced ordering, that is, relief structures with uniform thickness or droplets in the adsorbed monolayer, were observed depending on the annealing temperature. The polar PCL block preferred to wet the surface of a silicon wafer, while the PS block wet the air interface. This asymmetric wetting behavior led to the adsorbed monolayer with a PCL block layer having a thickness of around 4.0 nm. The crystallization of PCL blocks could overwhelm the microphase-separated structure because of the weak segregation. In situ observation of crystal growth indicated that the nucleation process preferred to occur at the edge of the thick parts of the film, that is, the relief structures or droplets. The crystal growth rate was presented by the time dependence of the distance between the tip of crystal clusters and the edge. At 22 and 17 degreesC, the average crystal growth rates were 55 +/- 10 and 18 +/- 4 nm/min, respectively.

In a previous study, we reported observation of the novel inverted phase (the minority blocks comprising the continuum phase) in kinetically controlled phase separating solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) triblock copolymer films [Zhang et al. Macromolecules 2000, 33, 9561-7]. In this study, we adopt the same approach to investigate the formation of inverted phase in a series of solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene) (SB) asymmetric diblock copolymers having nearly equal polystyrene (PS) weight fraction (about 30 wt %) but different molecular weights. The microstructure of the solution-cast block copolymer films resulting from different solvent evaporation rates, R, was inspected, from which the kinetically frozen-in phase structures at qualitatively different block copolymer concentrations and correspondingly different effective interaction parameter, chieff, can be deduced. Our result shows that there is a threshold molecular weight or range of molecular weight below which the unusual inverted phase is accessible by controlling the solvent evaporation rate. In comparing the present result with that of our previous study on the SBS triblock copolymer, we find that the formation of the inverted phase has little bearing on the chain architecture. We performed numerical calculations for the free energy of block copolymer cylinders and found that the normal phase is always preferred irrespective of the interaction parameter and molecular weight, which suggests the formation of the inverted phase to have a kinetic origin.

The pressure-dependent glass-transition temperatures (T-g's) of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) blends were determined by pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) dilatometry via an isobaric cooling procedure. The Gordon-Taylor and Fox equations were used to evaluate the relationships between the T-g's and compositions of the PMMA/SAN system at different pressures. The relationships were well fitted by the Gordon-Taylor equation, and the experimental data for T-g positively deviated from the values calculated with the Fox equation. Also, the influence of the cooling rate (during the PVT measurements) on T-g was examined.

Blends of polyamide-6 (PA6) with syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) were prepared using a series of styrene/glycidyl methacrylate (SG) copolymers as compatibilizers. These copolymers are miscible with sPS, and the epoxide units in SG are capable of reacting with PA6 end groups. These copolymers thus have the potential to form SG-g-PA6 graft copolymers at the PA6/sPS interface during melt processing. This study focuses on the effects of functionality and concentration of the compatibilizer on the morphological, mechanical and crystallization behaviors of the blends.. In general, SG copolymers are effective in reducing the sPS domain size and improving the interfacial adhesion. About 5 wt% glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is the optimum content in SG copolymer that produces the best compatibilization. Both the strength and modulus of the blend have been improved on addition of the SG copolymers, accompanying a loss in toughness when higher concentration copolymer is added. Incorporation of SG compatibilizers to PA6/sPS blend has little influence on the crystallization behavior of PA6 component but resulted in a steady reduction in intensity of crystallinity peak of sPS and simultaneous crystallization of sPS with PA6 is observed.

The effects of rubber content and temperature on dynamic fracture toughness of ABS materials have been investigated based on the J-integral and crack opening displacement (COD, delta) concepts by an instrumented Charpy impact test. A multiple specimens R-curve method and stop block technique are used. It is shown that the materials exhibit a different toughness behavior, depending on rubber content and temperature. The resistance against stable crack initiation (J(0.2) or delta(0.2)) increases with increasing rubber content. However, J(0.2) first increased with increasing temperature until reaching the maximum value; after that, it decreases with further increasing the temperature. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The graft copolymerization of butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) with eerie ammonium nitrate as redox initiator in a aqueous medium has been investigated. The formation of graft copolymer was confirmed by means of IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The percentage of mononer conversion and percentage of grafting varied with concentrations of initiator, nitric acid, monomer, macromolecular backbone (X-n = 1750, M = 80 000), reaction temperature and reaction time. Some inorganic salts and organic solvents have a great influence upon grafting. The reaction mechanism has been explored, and rate equations for the reaction are established. To obtain a novel support with practical value for metallocene catalyst (eta -C5H5)TiCl3 (CpTiCl3), poly (styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) /SiO2 nanoscale hybrid material (SrP/SiO2) was firstly produced as support. After pretreatment by methylaluminoxane (MAO), the hybrid materials reacted with CpTiCl3. The results from SAXS, SEM and TEM indicated the morphology and structure of organic/inorganic hybrid materials, and the size of inorganic particle in hybrid was nanoscale. The results from IR and XPS showed that there were two possible cationic active species in the hybrid-supported catalyst, the polymerization results of styrene proved this possibility.

Poly(4 - vinylpyridine)/silica( PVP/SiO2) organic - inorganic nanoscale hybrid was prepared using sol - gel method, in which PVP was used as an organic component and TEOS as a SiO2 precusor, This hybrid was used as CpTiCl3 support. The XPS and IR measurements showed that two kinds of catalytic active site were formed through analyzing the interaction mode between support and CpTiCl3. The results of styrene polymerization showed that syndiotactic was the highest at 50 degreesC. The catalytic activity was 1.09 x 10(6) g PS/ (mol Ti . h) at 70 degreesC when n(Al)/n(Ti) = 1500. GPC results showed a bimodal molecular weight distribution.

The fracture behavior of ABS materials with a particle diameter of 110 nm and of 330 nm was studied using instrumented Charpy impact tests. The effects of rubber content and temperature on fracture behavior, deformation mode, stable crack extension, plastic zone size, J-integral value, and crack opening displacement were investigated. In the case of a particle size of 110 nm, the material was found to break in a brittle manner, and the dominant crack mechanism was unstable crack propagation. Fracture toughness increases with increasing rubber content. In the case of a particle size of 330 nm, brittle-to-tough transition was observed. The J-integral value first increases with rubber content, then levels off after the rubber content is greater than 16 wt %. The J-integral value of a particle diameter of 330 nm was found to be much greater than that of 110 nm. The J-integral value of both series first increased with increasing temperature until reaching the maximum value, after which it decreased with further increasing temperature. The conclusion is that a particle diameter of 330 nm is more efficient than that of 110 nm in toughening, but for both series the effectiveness of rubber modification decreases with increasing temperatures higher than 40 degreesC because of intrinsic craze formation in the SAN matrix at temperatures near the glass transition of SAN. In preparing copolymer of the same composition by batch process in two - component copolymerization it is necessary to keep the monomer ratio constant by replenishing the fraction of the more reactive monomer. In this paper a calculation method for monomer feeding is derived, which iscapable of controlling the composition of cooligomer during the course of reaction. Some cooligomers of acrylonitrile and butadiene with relatively the same compositions have been prepared using the replenishing method. The method would be useful for other two - component copolymerization ion process.

The surface structure of the ring-banded spherulites in polymer blends PCL/SAN (90/10) was studied by optical microscopy, SEM, and TEM, respectively. It is interesting to find that the surface structure of the ring-banded spherulites in polymer blends PCL/SAN (90/10) is made up of the convex bands. The landscape of the convex bands on the surface has been little emphasized before. Radial fibrils are arranged on the bands. Details of the radial fibrils on the bands can be observed by TEM. The landscape of the convex bands on the surface and twisting of lamellae in the convex bands for PCL/SAN blends may be useful to explain the formation mechanism of the ring banded spherulites in polymer blends or even in homopolymers. By mechanism-transformation (anionic --> cationic) poly(styrene-6-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, PS-b-PEOx, was synthesized in two steps. The first step is the polymerization of styrene block capped with ethylene oxide and its tosylation; the second step is the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline. The products were thoroughly characterized by various methods, such as H-1-NMR, IR, DMA, TEM and SAXS. The results show that the copolymer obtained possesses high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution.
