Basic concept knowledge of children who were deaf/hard of hearing was tested using the Bracken Basic Concept Scale: 3rd Edition. These children were given both the receptive and expressive portions of the test. Results indicate delays in overall basic concept knowledge in children who are deaf compared to their normal-hearing peers.

Samples from 30 deaf probands exhibiting features suggestive of syndromic mitochondrial deafness or from families with maternal transmission of deafness were selected for investigation of mutations in the mitochondrial genes MT-RNR1 and MT-TS1. Patients with mutation m. 1555A>G had been previously excluded from this sample. In the MT-RNR1 gene, five probands presented the m. 827A>G sequence variant, of uncertain pathogenicity. This change was also detected in 66 subjects of an unaffected control sample of 306 Brazilian individuals from various ethnic backgrounds. Given its high frequency, we consider it unlikely to have a pathogenic role on hereditary deafness. As to the MT-TS1 gene, one proband presented the previously known pathogenic m. 7472insC mutation and three probands presented a novel variant, m. 7462C>T, which was absent from the same control sample of 306 individuals. Because of its absence in control samples and association with a family history of hearing impairment, we suggest it might be a novel pathogenic mutation.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of hearing protection devices (HPDs) on the understanding of speech in young adults with normal hearing, both in a silent situation and in the presence of ambient noise. The experimental research was carried out with the following variables: five different conditions of HPD use (without protectors, with two earplugs and with two earmuffs); a type of noise (pink noise); 4 test levels (60, 70, 80 and 90 dB[A]); 6 signal/noise ratios (without noise, + 5, + 10, zero, - 5 and - 10 dB); 5 repetitions for each case, totalling 600 tests with 10 monosyllables in each one. The variable measure was the percentage of correctly heard words (monosyllabic) in the test. The results revealed that, at the lowest levels (60 and 70 dB), the protectors reduced the intelligibility of speech (compared to the tests without protectors) while, in the presence of ambient noise levels of 80 and 90 dB and unfavourable signal/noise ratios (0, -5 and -10 dB), the HPDs improved the intelligibility. A comparison of the effectiveness of earplugs versus earmuffs showed that the former offer greater efficiency in respect to the recognition of speech, providing a 30% improvement over situations in which no protection is used. As might be expected, this study confirmed that the protectors' influence on speech intelligibility is related directly to the spectral curve of the protector's attenuation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Currently, there are several techniques for the rehabilitation of atrophic maxillary ridges in literature. The grafting procedure using autogenous bone is considered ideal by many researchers, as it shows osteogenic capability and causes no antigenic reaction. However, this type of bone graft has some shortcomings, mainly the restricted availability of donor sites. In recent years, several alternatives have been investigated to supply the disadvantages of autogenous bone grafts. In such studies, allogeneic bone grafts, which are obtained from individuals with different genetic load, but from the same species, have been extensively used. They can be indicated in cases of arthroplasty, surgical knee reconstruction, large bone defects, and in oral and maxillofacial reconstruction. Besides showing great applicability and biocompatibility, this type of bone is available in unlimited quantities. on the other hand, allogeneic bone may have the disadvantage of transmitting infectious diseases. Atrophic maxillae can be treated with bone grafts followed by osseointegrated implants to obtain aesthetic and functional oral rehabilitation. This study aimed to show the viability of allogeneic bone grafting in an atrophic maxilla, followed by oral rehabilitation with dental implant and protocol-type prosthesis within a 3-year follow-up period by means of a clinical case report.

The aim of this study was to describe the treatment used in an elderly patient presenting with bruxism and dental erosion, with good gingival health and bone support, but with decreased occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). The oral rehabilitation of elderly patients presenting with bruxism in association with tooth erosion has been a great challenge for dentists. The loss of OVD, the presence of occlusal instability and the absence of an effective anterior guide due excessive dental wear, can damage stomatognathic system (SS) biology, the function and the aesthetics. In the first treatment stage, an overlay removable partial denture (ORPD) was fabricated for the immediate re-establishment of function and aesthetics. After a 2-month follow up, with the patient presenting no symptoms, a second rehabilitation stage was accomplished, with fixed and removable prostheses. Oral rehabilitation with an ORPD was able to re-establish the SS biology, but a correct diagnosis and treatment plan are essential for success. The ORPD is a non-invasive and reversible restoring modality for general dentists that allow the re-establishment of the patient's immediate aesthetics and function at low cost.

Purpose: This work intended to investigate, by means of a literature revision, the techniques and materials used for the rehabilitation of hemimandibular defect patients, prosthetic and occlusal aspects of these patients, and chewing and swallowing.Materials and Methods: For the confection of this revision, we consulted the database indexers Google Scholar, PubMed, and SciELO and found studies published between the periods 1972 and 2008. The terms used for the search had been "to hemimandibular defects," "to temporomandibular joint protheses," and "vascularized cap grafts," which had been searched separately and combined. Conclusions: Diverse techniques and materials used for the reconstruction of hemimandibular defects exist; however, great bone resorption is still observed, which will compromise the prosthetic rehabilitation of these patients. More prospective works and stories of clinical cases duly registered will be able to elucidate in a clearer form the anatomic and functional devolutions of the verbal socket of hemimandibular defect patients.

We report the simultaneous rehabilitation of an edentulous patient with a hybrid (zygomatic and conventional implants) all-on-four implant-supported prosthesis for the maxilla and a standard (conventional implants) all-on-four implant-supported prosthesis for the mandible. The transfer impression was made with a multifunctional guide and the upper and lower prostheses were placed 24 h postoperatively. Clinical and radiographic examinations showed no infection or bony resorption 2 years later. Simultaneous maxillary and mandibular rehabilitation with all-on-four immediate loading is a viable, fast and effective option for edentulous patients. Prosthetic rehabilitation of a bone defect with a teeth-implant supported, removable partial denture

The use of teeth-implant, mucosa-supported removable dentures for rehabilitation of partially edentulous patients involves highly complex biomechanical aspects. This type of prosthesis associates 3 kinds of support that react differently to the functional and parafunctional forces developed in the oral cavity. Although the construction of removable partial dentures may seem paradoxical when osseointegrated implants are placed, in some cases, this option is an excellent alternative to solve difficulties related to the anatomic, biologic, psychomotor, and financial conditions of the patient. This article reports on a case in which a teeth-implant, mucosa-supported removable partial denture was the option of choice for a patient with financial and anatomic limitations, having a large structural loss of the residual alveolar ridge caused by trauma by a gunshot injury at the mandible. The 5-year follow-up did not reveal any type of biomechanical or functional problem. Copyright © 2006 by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins.

The hybrid obturator prosthesis aims to provide a sense of well-being to the patient, offering improvements in speech, chewing, and swallowing. Thus, the retention and stabilization of the prosthesis become decisive factors for the success of the rehabilitation treatment. The objective of this study was to describe the treatment of a 70-year-old man with a congenital maxillary cleft performed through aesthetic and functional prosthetic rehabilitation with hybrid obturator prosthesis. In this study, the fabricated prosthesis achieved its purpose by providing adequate functional and aesthetic conditions to the patient, promoting the reduction of airspace through the sealing of the oronasal communication, with consequent improvement in the quality of life.
