Current Learning Management Systems focus on the management of students, keeping track of their progress across all types of training activities. This type of systems lacks integration with other e-Learning systems. For instance, learning objects stored in a centralized repository are unavailable throughout an organization for potential reuse. In this paper we present the interoperability features of crimsonHex - a service oriented repository of learning objects - highlighting the use of XML languages. Its nteroperability features are compliant with the existing standards and we propose extensions to the IMS interoperability recommendation, adding new functions, formalizing an XML message interchange and providing also a REST interface. To validate the proposed extensions and its implementation in crimsonHex we designed two repository plugins for Moodle 2.0, the first of which is already implemented and is expected to be included in the next release of this popular learning management system.

The LMS plays an indisputable role in the majority of the eLearning environments. This eLearning system type is often used for presenting, solving and grading simple exercises. However, exercises from complex domains, such as computer programming, require heterogeneous systems such as evaluation engines, learning objects repositories and exercise resolution environments. The coordination of networks of such disparate systems is rather complex. This work presents a standard approach for the coordination of a network of eLearning systems supporting the resolution of exercises. The proposed approach use a pivot component embedded in the LMS with two roles: provide an exercise resolution environment and coordinate the communication between the LMS and other systems exposing their functions as web services. The integration of the pivot component with the LMS relies on the Learning Tools Interoperability. The validation of this approach is made through the integration of the component with LMSs from two vendors.

The LMS plays a decisive role in most eLearning environments. Although they integrate many useful tools for managing eLearning activities, they must also be effectively integrated with other specialized systems typically found in an educational environment such as Repositories of Learning Objects or ePortfolio Systems. Both types of systems evolved separately but in recent years the trend is to combine them, allowing the LMS to benefit from using the ePortfolio assessment features. This paper details the most common strategies for integrating an ePortfolio system into an LMS: the data, the API and the tool integration strategies. It presents a comparative study of strategies based on the technical skills, degree of coupling, security features, batch integration, development effort, status and standardization. This study is validated through the integration of two of the most representative systems on each category - respectively Mahara and Moodle.

Since 1989, five parliamentary elections have been the stage for the foundation and demise of political parties aspiring to govern the new democratic Polish state. The demise of the AWS before the 2001 elections after ten years of attempts to create a centre-right core party resulted in a new splintering of the right-wing, and the centre-right became again devoid of a pivotal formation. While Eurosceptic parties in average gain 8 percent of the vote, in the 2001 Polish parliamentary elections Eurosceptic parties gained around 20 percent of the vote. In Poland right-wing parties show an unusual propensity for Euroscepticism. The persistence and increased importance of nationalism in Poland, which has prevented the development of a strong Christian democratic party, effectively explains the levels of Euroscepticism on the right. After the autumn 2005 parliamentary elections the national conservative party, Law and Justice, formed a governing coalition with the national Catholic League of Polish Families, creating one of the first Eurosceptic governments. Although this work does not intend to provide a theorisation of party systems development, it shows that the context of European integration fostered nationalists’ divisiveness of, and provoked the splitting of the right the unusual propensity of parties for Euroscepticism makes Poland a paradigmatic case of the kind of conflicts over European integration emerging in Central and Eastern European party systems.

This paper develops an energy management system with integration of smart meters for electricity consumers in a smart grid context. The integration of two types of smart meters (SM) are developed: (i) consumer owned SM and (ii) distributor owned SM. The consumer owned SM runs over a wireless platform - ZigBee protocol and the distributor owned SM uses the wired environment - ModBus protocol. The SM are connected to a SCADA system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) that supervises a network of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). The SCADA system/PLC network integrates different types of information coming from several technologies present in modern buildings. The developed control strategy implements a hierarchical cascade controller where inner loops are performed by local PLCs, and the outer loop is managed by a centralized SCADA system, which interacts with the entire local PLC network. In order to implement advanced controllers, a communication channel was developed to allow the communication between the SCADA system and the MATLAB software. (C) 2014 The Authors. In Portugal, especially starting in the 1970s, women’s studies had implications on the emergency of the concept of gender and the feminist criticism to the prevailing models about differences between sexes. Until then, women had been absent from scientific research both as subject and as object. Feminism brought more reflexivity to the scientific thinking. After the 25th of April 1974, because of the consequent political openness, several innovating themes of research emerged, together with new concepts and fields of study. However, as far as gender and science relationship is concerned, such studies especially concentrate on higher education institutions. The feminist thinking seems to have two main objectives: to give women visibility, on the one hand, and to denunciate men’s domain in the several fields of knowledge. In 1977, the “Feminine Commission” is created and since then it has been publishing studies on women’s condition and contributing to the enhancement of the reflection of female condition at all levels. In the 1980s, the growing feminisation of tertiary education (both of students and academics), favoured the development of women’s studies, especially on their condition within universities with a special focus on the glass ceiling, despite the lack of statistical data by gender, thus making difficult the analysis of women integration in several sectors, namely in educational and scientific research activities. Other agglutinating themes are family, social and legal condition, work, education, and feminine intervention on political and social movements. In the 1990s, Women Studies are institutionalised in the academic context with the creation of the first Master in Women Studies in the Universidade Aberta (Open University), in Lisbon. In 1999, the first Portuguese journal of women studies is created – “Faces de Eva”. Seminars, conferences, thesis, journals, and projects on women’s studies are more and more common. However, results and publications are not so divulgated as they should be, because of lack of comprehensive and coordinated databases. 2. Analysis by topics 2.1. Horizontal and vertical segregation Research questions It is one of the main areas of research in Portugal. Essentially two issues have been considered: - The analysis of vertical gender segregation in educational and professional fields, having reflexes on women professional career progression with special attention to men’s power in control positions and the glass ceiling. - The analysis of horizontal segregation, special in higher education (teaching and research) where women have less visibility than men, and the under-representation of women in technology and technological careers. Research in this area mainly focuses on description, showing the under-representation of women in certain scientific areas and senior positions. Nevertheless, the studies that analyze horizontal segregation in the field of education adopt a more analytical approach which focuses on the analysis of the mechanisms of reproduction of gender stereotypes, especially socialisation, influencing educational and career choices. 1

Lean Thinking is an important pillar in the success of any program of continuous improvement process. Its tools are useful means in the analysis, control and organization of important data for correct decision making in organizations. This project had as main objective the design of a program of quality improvement in Eurico Ferreira, S.A., based on the evaluation of customer satisfaction and the implementation of 5S. Subsequently, we have selected which business area of the company to address. After the selection, there was an initial diagnostic procedure, identifying the various points of improvement to which some tools of Lean Thinking have been applied, in particular Value Stream Mapping and 5S methodology. With the first, we were able to map the current state of the process in which all stakeholders were represented as well as the flow of materials and information throughout the process. The 5S methodology allowed to act on the wastage, identifying and implementing various process improvements.

This paper presents an ongoing project that implements a platform for creating personal learning environments controlled by students, integrating Web 2.0 applications and content management systems, enabling the safe use of content created in Web 2.0 applications, allowing its publication in the infrastructure controlled by the HEI. Using this platform, students can develop their personal learning environment (PLE) integrated with the Learning Management System (LMS) of the HEI, enabling the management of their learning and, simultaneously, creating their e-portfolio with digital content developed for Course Units (CU). All this can be maintained after the student completes his academic studies, since the platform will remain accessible to students even after they leave the HEI and lose access to its infrastructure. The platform will enable the safe use of content created in Web 2.0 applications, allowing its protected publication in the infrastructure controlled by HEI, thus contributing to the adaptation of the L&T paradigm to the Bologna process.

Este estudo tem como objetivos: (1) conhecer as práticas desenvolvidas numa organização do Ensino Superior Público Português; (2) conhecer a tipologia das práticas de GRH de cariz tradicional e de cariz estratégico; (3) perceber em que medida as práticas de GRH estão relacionadas com a área de qualificação dos responsáveis do departamento de RH; (4) averiguar o grau de satisfação que os trabalhadores sentem com as Práticas de Gestão de Recursos Humanos desenvolvidas e a sua relação com a área de qualificação dos responsáveis do departamento de RH. Foi utilizada uma metodologia mista, que possibilita ampliar a obtenção de resultados em abordagens investigativas, proporcionando ganhos relevantes para a pesquisa. É realizado um primeiro estudo exploratório, que utiliza uma metodologia mista quantitativa e qualitativa, com recurso a uma entrevista semiestruturada e inquérito realizados aos responsáveis de RH, e que tem como objetivos identificar e caracterizar as Práticas de GRH vigentes na Organização e, consequentemente, averiguar se se aproximam das designadas na literatura, assim como averiguar o grau de intervenção do DRH no desenvolvimento das PGRH e caraterizar o perfil do responsável de RH na Organização, averiguando se a área de formação de RH influencia as Práticas de GRH desenvolvidas. No segundo estudo, recorremos a uma metodologia quantitativa com recurso ao inquérito por questionário, aplicado aos trabalhadores que exercem funções a tempo integral, para averiguar o grau de satisfação dos trabalhadores em relação às Práticas de Gestão de Recursos Humanos. Na compilação dos dois estudos foi nosso objetivo obter respostas às questões que orientaram a nossa investigação. Na parte final da dissertação são discutidos os principais resultados obtidos e apresentadas as conclusões do estudo aqui levado a cabo. Os resultados sugerem que: 1) as PGRH existentes são essencialmente de cariz tradicional, em especial a gestão administrativa; 2) as PGRH predominantes são: o Planeamento de Recursos Humanos, a Análise e Descrição de Funções, o Recrutamento e Seleção, a Formação e Desenvolvimento, a Gestão Administrativa, a Comunicação e a Partilha de Informação, Ética e Deontologia e o Estatuto Disciplinar; 3) existe pouco recurso ao outsourcing para as PGRH; 4) o grau de intervenção DRH baseia-se em atividades de cariz mais administrativo; 5) as práticas tradicionais de RH são aquelas que requerem mais tempo ao DRH; 6) não existe relação entre o tipo de PGRH e a área de qualificação do responsável do DRH; 7) as PGRH são realizadas seguindo essencialmente as normas legais e regras rígidas da GRH na AP; 8) algumas PGRH não são entendidas em contexto da AP, como importantes pelos gestores, embora já sejam desenvolvidos alguns procedimentos dessas práticas; 9) a PGRH da formação e desenvolvimento não é corretamente desenvolvida e não dá cumprimento ao estipulado na lei; 10) a gestão de carreiras e o sistema de compensação e recompensas são entendidas como inexistentes, porque não existem promoções e progressões desde 2005; 11) a avaliação do desempenho é um sistema burocrático e ritualista com fins de promoção e compensação, sem efeitos práticos no momento atual, e que causa insatisfação e o sentimento de injustiça; 12) existem problemas de comunicação quanto a partilha e uniformização de procedimentos entre UO; 13) a satisfação dos trabalhadores é maior com as PGRH de tipo tradicional, nomeadamente na gestão administrativa, recrutamento e seleção, análise e descrição de funções, acolhimento, integração e socialização 14) a satisfação é menor na gestão de carreiras, no sistema de compensação e recompensas e na avaliação do desempenho; 15) quanto a relação entre o grau de satisfação e as características sócio demográficas e profissionais dos inquiridos, os casos com significância mostram que os trabalhadores com 10 ou mais anos de antiguidade tendem a sentir mais satisfação com as práticas em GRH; 16) existe mais satisfação dos trabalhadores das UO onde o responsável de DRH possui formação na área de RH.
