Changes in the local freshwater budget over the last 22,000 years have been estimated from a sediment core located in the southern South China Sea (SCS) using a combined approach of Mg/Ca and oxygen isotopes on the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white) sensu stricto (s.s.). Core MD01-2390 (06°28,12N, 113°24,56E; water depth 1591 m) is located near the glacial paleo-river mouths of the Baram, Rajang and North Sunda/Molengraaff Rivers that drained the exposed Sunda Shelf. The delta18Oseawater record reveals lower average values (-0.96±0.18 per mil) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) when compared with modern values (-0.54±0.18 per mil). Low salinity during the LGM is interpreted to reflect a higher freshwater contribution due to a greater proximity of the core site to the mouths of the Baram, Rajang and North Sunda/Molengraaff Rivers at that time. A general deglacial increasing trend in salinity due to the progressive landward displacement of the coastline during deglacial shelf flooding is punctuated by several short-term shifts towards higher and lower salinity that are likely related to abrupt changes in the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon. Thus, the deglacial delta18Oseawater changes reflect the combined effects of sea-level-induced environmental changes on the shelf (e.g. phases of retreat and breakdown of the shelf drainage systems) and East Asian monsoon climate change. Lower salinity than at present during the Early Holocene may be attributed to an increase in summer monsoonal precipitation that is corroborated by previous marine and terrestrial studies that report a Preboreal-Early Holocene monsoon optimum in the Asian monsoon region.

The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) data set contains monthly discharge measurements for 1018 stations located throughout the world. The period of record varies widely from station to station, with a mean of 21.5 years. These data were digitized from published UNESCO archives by Charles Voromarty, Balaze Fekete, and B.A. Tucker of the Complex Systems Research Center (CSRC) at the University of New Hampshire. River discharge is typically measured through the use of a rating curve that relates local water level height to discharge. This rating curve is used to estimate discharge from the observed water level. The rating curves are periodically rechecked and recalibrated through on-site measurement of discharge and river stage.

This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Map of San Francisco, drawn on stone by F.W. Creen. It was published by W. B. Cooke & Co. ca. 1849. Scale [ca. 1:12,848]. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the California Zone III State Plane Coordinate System NAD83 (in Feet) (Fipszone 0403). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as roads, drainage, property lots and numbers, reserved government properties, and more. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from The Harvard Map Collection as part of the Imaging the Urban Environment project. Maps selected for this project represent major urban areas and cities of the world, at various time periods. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features at a large scale. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates, scales, and purposes.

Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and stable isotope measurements have been performed on tests from the planktonic foraminifers Globigerinoides ruber (white), Globigerina bulloides, and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (right coiling) in samples from Ocean Drilling Program site 977A in the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean). The evolution of different water masses between 250 and 150 ka is described. Warm substages were characterized by strong seasonality and thermal stratification of the water column. By contrast, less pronounced seasonality and basin stratification seem to prevail during cold substages. Several periods of stratification due to the low salinity of the upper water mass occurred during the formation of organic-rich layers and also during a possible Heinrich-like event at 220 ka. The three foraminifer species studied show a common and large shell Sr/Ca variability in short timescales, suggesting changes in the global ocean Sr/Ca ratio as one of the main causes of variations in shell composition.
