This article reports an analytical method for separating, identifying and quantitating sulfur-containing compounds and their groups in diesel oils (170-400degreesC) using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with a sulfur chemiluminescence detector. The identification of target compounds and their groups was based on standard substances, the group separation feature and the-effect of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography. The quantitative analysis on major sulfur compounds and total sulfur was carried out based on the linear response of sulfur chemiluminescence detector and the internal standards method. The results of total sulfur determination in the samples were compared with those from ASTM D 4294 standard method, the R.S.D. percentage were <6.02%, correctness of this method can meet the industrial requirement. To the end, the method developed was used to investigate the sulfur-containing compounds in different diesel oils, the result shows that the distribution of sulfur-containing compounds in diesel oils from different process units are apparently different. The sulfur compounds in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), residuum fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) diesel oils mainly exist in the form of alkyl-substituted dibenzothiophenes that add up to about 40-50% of the total sulfur, while this number is only 6-8 and 20-28% in visbreaking (VB) and delayed-coking (DC) diesel oils, respectively. The transport processes of components in capillary electrochromatographic column was investigated based on the basic model of relaxation theory. A principal transport equation of chromatographic relaxation theory was established and mathematical expressions for eluting curves were obtained under the situations of both capillary electrophoresis and chromatography. Characteristics of peak symmetry and its effecting factors are discussed. Tailing peaks, symmetrical peaks and fronting peaks would be observed simultaneously, which was further proved with reversed capillary electrochromatographic experiments.

An on-chip disk electrode based on sol-gel-derived carbon composite material could be easily and reproducibly fabricated. Unlike other carbon-based electrodes reported previously, this detector is rigid, convenient to fabricate, and amenable to chemical modifications. Based on the stable and reproducible characters of this detector, a copper particle-modified detector was developed for the detection of carbohydrates which extends the application of the carbon-based electrode. In our experiments, the performance of the new integrated detector for rapid on-chip measurement of epinephrine and glucose was illustrated. Experimental procedures including the fabrication of this detector, the configuration of separation channel outlet and electrode verge, and the performance characteristics of this new electrochemical detector were investigated.

Both absolute molecular weight and molecular sizes (radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius) of a vinyl-type polynorbornene eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns were determined by combined with a static and dynamic laser light scattering detector. The hydrodynamic radius of polymer fraction eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns was obtained from dynamic laser light scattering measurements at only a single angle of 900 by introducing a correction factor. According to the scaling relationship between molecular sizes and molecular weight and the ratio between radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius, the vinyl-type polynorbornene took a random coil conformation in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 150 degreesC.

The instrumental spreading of a high temperature gel permeation chromatograph (GPC) was evaluated by coupling with a two-angle laser light scattering (TALLS) detector, using narrow polystyrene, polyethylene, and syndiotactic polypropylene samples. The determined spreading factor increased with increasing molecular weight of polymers, and no maximum for spreading 174 tor was observed in the studied retention volume, while the spreading factors for single low molecular weight alkanes are independent of their molecular weight. Neglecting of the spreading effect for GPC would not introduce much error in molecular weight calculation when high quality high performance columns were used, especially when equipped with a laser light scattering detector. The scaling relationship between radius of gyration and molecular weight of polymer, determined by GPC with a TALLS detector, was independent of the instrumental spreading.

This paper describes an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode-based Ru(bPY)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminecence (ECL) detector for a microchip capillary electrophoresis (CE). The microchip CE-ECL system described in this article consists of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer containing separation and injection channels and an electrode plate with an ITO electrode fabricated by a photolithographic method. The PDMS layer was reversibly bound to the ITO electrode plate, which greatly simplified the alignment of the separation channel with the working electrode and enhanced the photon-capturing efficiency. In our study, the high separation electric field had no significant influence on the ECL detector, and decouplers for isolating the separation electric field were not needed in the microchip CE-ECL system. The ITO electrodes employed in the experiments displayed good durability and stability in the analytical procedures. Proline was selected to perform the microchip device with a limit of detection of 1.2 muM (S/N = 3) and a linear range from 5 to 600 muM.

Flow-mode static and dynamic laser light scattering (SLS/DLS) studies of polymers, including polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) at 150 degreesC were performed on a high temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC) coupled with a SLS/DLS detector. Both absolute molecular weight (M) and molecular sizes (radius of gyration, R-g and hydrodynamic radius, R-h) of polymers eluting from the GPC columns were obtained simultaneously. The conformation of different polymers in TCB at 150 degreesC were discussed according to the scaling relationships between R-g, R-h and M and the rho-ratio (p = R-g/R-h). Flow-mode DLS results of PDMS were verified by batch-mode DLS study of the same sample. The presented technique was proved to be a convenient and quick method to study the shape and conformation of polymers in solution at high temperature. However, the flow-mode DLS was only applicable for high molecular weight polymers with a higher refractive index increment such as PDMS.

We report capillary electrophoresis coupling to a solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detector for the first time. The solid-state ECL detector was fabricated by immobilizing the ECL reagent tris(2,2'-bipyridyf)ruthenium (TBR) in poly-(p-styrenesulfonate)-silica-poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymer films. The excellent stability of the solid-state ECL detector in the phosphate solution satisfied application in CE. The CE with solid-state ECL detector system was characterized using tripropylamine (TPA) and proline. The influences of detection potential, the concentration of TBR in the film, and pH value of ECL buffer were investigated. The linear range for TPA and proline was 0.005-10 muM and 5-10 mM with correlation coefficients of 0.997 and 0.998, respectively. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio S/N = 3) was estimated to be 0.002 and 2.0 muM for TPA and proline, respectively. The relative standard deviations for 1.0 pm TPA and 1.0 mm proline were 8.7% and 7.5% with theoretical plate numbers of 70 000 and 16 000, respectively. Compared with the CE-ECL of TBR in aqueous solution, the CE coupling with solid-state ECL detector system gave the same sensitivity of analysis.

Three cellulose derivatives were synthesized and used as chiral stationary phases based on silica gel. The effects of adsorbances on the column numbers and stabilities have been investigated. These stationary phases exhibited high chiral recognition for various racemates. At the same time, the on-line curves of polarimeter were obtained by high performance liquid chromatography with polarimeter as on-line detector.

Target transformation factor analysis was used to correct spectral interference in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-BES) for the determination of rare earth impurities in high purity thulium oxide. Data matrix was constructed with pure and mixture vectors and background vector. A method based on an error evaluation function was proposed to optimize the peak position, so the influence of the peak position shift in spectral scans on the determination was eliminated or reduced. Satisfactory results were obtained using factor analysis and the proposed peak position optimization method.

A new electrochemical cell assembly with the combination of UV and amperometric detector (AD) based on their complementarity was described. A Nafion tubing junction was used to decouple the high voltage from the separation capillary in the rear of on-column UV detector. In this mode, the electroactive and inert compounds could be detected by UV and AD at the same time. Aromatic amines were determined with the UV and the end-column AD detection to evaluate the performances of the cell assembly. Such an improved electrochemical detector could match the capillary with different diameters. By simple adjustment of the screws, the positioning of the working electrode and the detection capillary was easily gained without microscope. It is also very easy to assemble and disassemble the working electrode when needed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
