The objective of the present work is to propose a constitutive model for ice by considering the influence of important parameters such as strain rate dependence and pressure sensitivity on the response of the material. In this regard, the constitutive model proposed by Carney et al. (2006) is considered as a starting basis and subsequently modified to incorporate the effect of brittle cracking within a continuum damage mechanics framework. The damage is taken to occur in the form of distributed cracking within the material during impact which is consistent with experimental observations. At the point of failure, the material is assumed to be fluid-like with deviatoric stress almost dropping down to zero. The constitutive model is implemented in a general purpose finite element code using an explicit formulation. Several single element tests under uniaxial tension and compression, as well as biaxial loading are conducted in order to understand the performance of the model. Few large size simulations are also performed to understand the capability of the model to predict brittle damage evolution in un-notched and notched three point bend specimens. The proposed model predicts lower strength under tensile loading as compared to compressive loading which is in tune with experimental observations. Further the model also asserts the strain rate dependency of the strength behavior under both compressive as well as tensile loading, which also corroborates well with experimental results. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on Ti-6Al-4V specimens in the strain-rate range df 0.001 to 1 s(-1) and temperature range of 298 to 673 K. The stress-strain curves exhibited a peak flow stress followed by flow softening. Up to 523 K, the specimens cracked catastrophically after the flow softening started. Adiabatic shear banding was observed in this regime. The fracture surface exhibited both mode I and II fracture features. The state of stress existing in a compression test specimen when bulging occurs is responsible for this fracture. The instabilities observed in the present tests are classified as ''geometric'' in nature and are state-of-stress dependant, unlike the ''intrinsic'' instabilities, which are dependant on the dynamic constitutive behavior of the material.

Cylindrical specimens of textured commercial pure alpha-titanium plate, cut with the cylinder axis along the rolling direction for one set of experiments and in the long transverse direction for the other set, were compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.001 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates greater-than-or-equal-to 1 s-1, both sets of specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands, but the intensity of shear bands was found to be higher in the rolling direction specimens than in the long transverse direction specimens. At strain rates -0.1 s-1, the material deformed in a microstructurally inhomogeneous fashion. For the rolling direction specimens, cracking was observed at 100-degrees-C and at strain rates -0.1 s-1. This is attributed to dynamic strain aging. Such cracking was not observed in the long transverse specimens. The differences in the intensity of adiabatic shear bands and that of dynamic strain aging between the two sets of test specimens are attributed to the strong crystallographic texture present in these plates.

The influence of strain rate and state-of-stress on the formation of ferrite in stainless steel type AISI 304L, 304 and 304 as-cast, during hot working has been studied. Compression and torsion tests were conducted in the temperature range 1100 to 1250 degrees C and strain rate range 0.001 to 100 s(-1) on these materials, Ferrite formation occurs during deformation at temperatures above 1150 degrees C and strain rates above 10 s(-1), in stainless steel type AISI 304L and 304. The tendency for the formation of ferrite is more in as-cast 304 than in wrought 304, In as-cast 304 the ferrite forms at lower temperatures and strain rates, The tendency for the ferrite formation is more in torsion than in compression.

A novel approach for lossless as well as lossy compression of monochrome images using Boolean minimization is proposed. The image is split into bit planes. Each bit plane is divided into windows or blocks of variable size. Each block is transformed into a Boolean switching function in cubical form, treating the pixel values as output of the function. Compression is performed by minimizing these switching functions using ESPRESSO, a cube based two level function minimizer. The minimized cubes are encoded using a code set which satisfies the prefix property. Our technique of lossless compression involves linear prediction as a preprocessing step and has compression ratio comparable to that of JPEG lossless compression technique. Our lossy compression technique involves reducing the number of bit planes as a preprocessing step which incurs minimal loss in the information of the image. The bit planes that remain after preprocessing are compressed using our lossless compression technique based on Boolean minimization. Qualitatively one cannot visually distinguish between the original image and the lossy image and the value of mean square error is kept low. For mean square error value close to that of JPEG lossy compression technique, our method gives better compression ratio. The compression scheme is relatively slower while the decompression time is comparable to that of JPEG.

The coherent flame model uses the strain rate to predict reaction rate per unit flame surface area and some procedure that solves for the dynamics of flame surfaces to predict species distributions. The strainrate formula for the reaction rate is obtained from the analytical solution for a flame in a laminar, plane stagnation point flow. Here, the formula's effectiveness is examined by comparisons with data from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a round jetlike flow that undergoes transition to turbulence. Significant differences due to general flow features can be understood qualitatively: Model predictions are good in the braids between vortex rings, which are present in the near field of round jets, as the strain rate is extensional and reaction surfaces are isolated. In several other regions, the strain rate is compressive or flame surfaces are folded close together. There, the predictions are poor as the local flow no longer resembles the model flow. Quantitative comparisons showed some discrepancies. A modified, consistent application of the strain-rate solution did not show significant changes in the prediction of mean reaction rate distributions.

The evolution of microstructure and texture during room temperature compression of commercially pure Ti with four different initial orientations were studied under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. At a low strain rate (epsilon)over dot = 3 x 10(-4) s(-1) the different initial textures yielded the same end texture, despite different microstructural evolution in terms of twin boundaries. High strain rate deformation at (epsilon)over dot = 1.5 x 10(3) s(-1) was characterized by extensive twinning and evolution of a texture that was similar to that at low strain rate with minor differences. However, there was a significant difference in the strength of the texture for different orientations that was absent for low strain rate deformed samples at high strain rate. A viscoplastic self-consistent model with a secant approach was used to corroborate the experimental results by simulation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc.

The deformation behavior of an FeAl alloy processed by hot extrusion of water atomized powder has been investigated. Compression tests are performed in the temperature range 1073–1423 K and in the strain rate range 0.001–100 s−1 up to a true plastic strain of 0.5. The flow stress has been found to be strongly dependent on temperature as well as strain rate. The stress exponent in the power law rate equation is estimated to be in the range 7.0–4.0, decreasing with temperature. The activation energy for plastic flow in the range 1073–1373 K varies from 430 kJ mol−1 at low stresses to 340 kJ mol−1 at high stresses. However, it is fairly independent of strain rate and strain. The activation area has similarly shown a stress dependence and lies in the range 160–45b2. At 1423 K and at strain rates lower than 0.1 s−1 a strain rate sensitivity of 0.3 is observed with an associated activation energy of 375 kJ mol−1. The plastic flow in the entire range of temperature and strain rate investigated appears to be controlled by a diffusion mechanism. The results have revealed that it is possible to process the alloy by superplastic forming in the range 1373–1423 K at strain rates lower than 0.1 s−1.

The applicability of Artificial Neural Networks for predicting the stress-strain response of jointed rocks at varied confining pressures, strength properties and joint properties (frequency, orientation and strength of joints) has been studied in the present paper. The database is formed from the triaxial compression tests on different jointed rocks with different confining pressures and different joint properties reported by various researchers. This input data covers a wide range of rock strengths, varying from very soft to very hard. The network was trained using a 3 layered network with feed forward back propagation algorithm. About 85% of the data was used for training and remaining15% for testing the predicting capabilities of the network. Results from the analyses were very encouraging and demonstrated that the neural network approach is efficient in capturing the complex stress-strain behaviour of jointed rocks. A single neural network is demonstrated to be capable of predicting the stress-strain response of different rocks, whose intact strength vary from 11.32 MPa to 123 MPa and spacing of joints vary from 10 cm to 100 cm for confining pressures ranging from 0 to 13.8 MPa.

The composites consisting of amorphous matrix reinforced with crystalline dendrites offer extraordinary combinations of strength, stiffness, and toughness and can be processed in bulk. Hence, they have been receiving intense research interest, with a primary focus to study their mechanical properties. In this paper, the temperature and strain rate effects on the uniaxial compression response of a tailored bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite has been investigated. Experimental results show that at temperatures ranging between ambient to 500 K and at all strain rates; the onset of plastic deformation in the composite is controlled by that in the dendrites. As the temperature is increased to the glass transition temperature of the matrix and beyond, flow in the amorphous matrix occurs readily and hence it dictates the composite's response. The role of the constituent phases in controlling the deformation mechanism of the composite has been verified by assessing the strain rate sensitivity and the activation volume for deformation. The composite is rate sensitive at room temperature with values of strain rate sensitivity and activation volume being similar to that of the dendrites. At test temperatures near to the glass transition temperature, the composite however becomes rate-insensitive corresponding to that of the matrix phase. At low strain rates, serrated flow akin to that of dynamic strain ageing in crystalline alloys was observed and the serration magnitude decreases with increasing temperature. Initiation of the shear bands at the dendrite/matrix interface and propagation of them through the matrix ligaments until their arrest at another interface is the responsible mechanism for this. The effect of base dissipation on the granular flow down an inclined plane is examined by altering the coefficient of restitution between the moving and base particles in discrete element (DE) simulations. The interaction laws between two moving particles are kept fixed, and the coefficient of restitution (damping constant in the DE simulations) between the base and moving particles are altered to reduce dissipation, and inject energy from the base. The energy injection does result in an increase in the strain rate by up to an order of magnitude, and the temperature by up to two orders of magnitude at the base. However, the volume fraction, strain rate and temperature profiles in the bulk (above about 15 particle diameters from the base) are altered very little by the energy injection at the base. We also examine the variation of h(stop), the minimum height at the cessation of flow, with energy injection from the base. It is found that at a fixed angle of inclination, h(stop) decreases as the energy dissipation at the base decreases.

We report the results of an experimental and numerical study conducted on a closed-cell aluminium foam that was subjected to uniaxial compression with lateral constraint. X-ray computed tomography was utilized to gain access into the three-dimensional (3-D) structure of the foam and some aspects of the deformation mechanisms. A series of advanced 3-D image analyses are conducted on the 3-D images aimed at characterizing the strain localization regions. We identify the morphological/geometrical features that are responsible for the collapse of the cells and the strain localization. A novel mathematical approach based on a Minkowski tensor analysis along with the mean intercept length technique were utilized to search for signatures of anisotropy across the foam sample and its evolution as a function of loading. Our results show that regions with higher degrees of anisotropy in the undeformed foam have a tendency to initiate the onset of cell collapse. Furthermore, we show that strain hardening occurs predominantly in regions with large cells and high anisotropy. We combine the finite element method with the tomographic images to simulate the mechanical response of the foam. We predict further deformation in regions where the foam is already deformed. Particle simulations based on the discrete element method are used to examine the effect of base roughness on the granular flow down an inclined plane. The base is composed of a random configuration of fixed particles, and the base roughness is decreased by decreasing the ratio of diameters of the base and moving particles. A discontinuous transition from a disordered to an ordered flow state is observed when the ratio of diameters of base and moving particles is decreased below a critical value. The ordered flowing state consists of hexagonally close packed layers of particles sliding over each other. The ordered state is denser (higher volume fraction) and has a lower coordination number than the disordered state, and there are discontinuous changes in both the volume fraction and the coordination number at transition. The Bagnold law, which states that the stress is proportional to the square of the strain rate, is valid in both states. However, the Bagnold coefficients in the ordered flowing state are lower, by more than two orders of magnitude, in comparison to those of the disordered state. The critical ratio of base and moving particle diameters is independent of the angle of inclination, and varies very little when the height of the flowing layer is doubled from about 35 to about 70 particle diameters. While flow in the disordered state ceases when the angle of inclination decreases below 20 degrees, there is flow in the ordered state at lower angles of inclination upto 14 degrees. The surface texture of a die plays an important role in friction during metal forming. In the present study, unidirectional and random surface finishes were produced on hardened steel plate surfaces. To understand the influence of surface texture on friction, experiments were conducted using Al-Mg alloy pins that slid against steel plates of different surface textures. In the sliding experiments, a high coefficient of friction was observed when the pins slid perpendicular to the unidirectional grinding marks and low friction occurred when the pins slid on the random surfaces. Finite element simulations were performed using the measured friction values to understand the stress and strain evolutions in the deforming material using dies with various friction. The numerical results showed that the states of stress and strain rates are strongly influenced by the friction at the interface and hence would influence the final material microstructure. To substantiate the numerical results, laboratory compression tests were conducted. Different surface textures were obtained in order to experience different friction values at different locations. A large variation in the microstructure at these locations was observed during experiments, verifying that surface texture and die friction significantly influence fundamental material formation behavior.

The component and system reliability based design of bridge abutments under earthquake loading is presented in the paper. Planar failure surface has been used in conjunction with pseudo-dynamic approach to compute seismic active earth pressures on an abutment. The pseudo-dynamic method, considers the effect of phase difference in shear waves, soil amplification along with the horizontal seismic accelerations, strain localization in backfill soil and associated post-peak reduction in the shear resistance from peak to residual values along a previously formed failure plane. Four modes of stability viz. sliding, overturning, eccentricity and bearing capacity of the foundation soil are considered in the analysis. The series system reliability is computed with an assumption of independent failure modes. The lower and upper bounds of system reliability are also computed by taking into account the correlations between four failure modes, which is evaluated using the direction cosines of the tangent planes at the most probable points of failure.
