The electrochemical behavior of benznidazole has been investigated in dimethylsulfoxide by cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential electrolysis. The reduction occurs in two one-electron steps, where the first electron transfer corresponds to the reversible formation of the radical anion followed by a slow chemical reaction. The second electron transfer is attributed to the reduction of the radical anion to a dianion by an electrodic process involving a Very fast cleavage of the dianion with the formation of a lactam derivative as the principal product of reduction in aprotic medium. The reduction of phenyl benzoates with nitro substituents at the 2-,3- and 4-positions of the benzoates in N,N-dimethylformamide is reported. The phenyl 4- and 3-nitrobenzoate are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first one, at about -0.9 V vs. SCE, a reversible one-electron process, gives a rather stable anion radical. The second reduction step at potentials between -1.5 and -2.0 V vs. SCE leads to formation of the dianion, which decomposes giving free phenol in good yields (> 80%). on the other hand, the phenyl 2-nitrobenzoate is reduced in one cathodic step. This step occurs at -0.9 V with formation of an unstable anion radical which decomposes via C-O bond cleavage, giving phenol with a yield of ca. 80%. The mechanisms of the reduction of these compounds are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. S.A.

The applicability of the nitrobenzoyl group [NO2C6H4CO-] to protecting the functional hydroxyl group was investigated through study of the electrochemical behaviour of the butyl 4-, 3- and 2-nitrobenzoate compounds. These isomers are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first, at potentials of ca. -0.9 V vs. SCE, is attributed to the formation of rather stable anion radicals, involving one-electron transfer. The second, at potentials of ca. -1.7 V vs. SCE, occurs with a two-electron transfer in an ECE process, in which the dianion produced undergoes scission of the C-O bond giving n-butanoate ions with high yields (similar to 80%)

Chagas' disease is a serious health problem for Latin America. The situation is worsened by the lack of efficient chemotherapy. The two available commercial drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox, are more effective in the acute phase of the disease. Nitrofurazone is active against Trypanosoma cruzi, however its high toxicity precludes its current use in parasitosis. Hydroxymethylnitrofurazone is a prodrug of nitrofurazone. It is more active against Trypanosoma cruzi than nitrofurazone, besides being less toxic. This work shows the voltammetric behavior of nitrofurazone and a comparison with those of metronidazole and chloramphenicol using cyclic, linear sweep and differential pulse voltammetries. For these drugs also the prediction of the diffusion coefficients using Wilke-Chang equation was performed. The reduction of nitrofurazone is pH-dependent and in acidic medium the hydroxylamine derivative, involving four electrons, is the principal product formed. In aqueous-alkaline medium and with a glassy carbon electrode pre-treatment the reduction of nitrofurazone occurs in two steps, the first involving one electron to form the nitro-radical anion and the second corresponding to the hydroxylamine derivative formation. Hydroxymethylnitrofurazone presented the same voltammetric behavior and electroactivity, indicating that the molecular modification performed in nitrofurazone did not change its capacity to be reduced. A brief discussion regarding the differences in biological activity between the two compounds is also presented. ©2005 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.
Electrochemical reduction and voltammetric determination of diloxanide furoate in non-aqueous medium
Resumo:
The electrochemical reduction of diloxanide furoate (DF) in acetonitrile on glassy carbon electrode was studied in this work. It was observed that DF is reduced after a reversible one-electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction, diagnosed as C-Cl bond cleavage. Its reduction was followed by linear (LSV), differential pulse (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). Analytical curves were obtained for DF determination using all the investigated voltammetric techniques. For LSV was obtained a linear range (LR) from 5.0 × 10-4 to 1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1, with detection limit (DL) of 1.5 × 10-4 mol L-1 and sensitivity (S) of 2.1 × 104 μA mol-1 L. The analytical parameters obtained by DPV were: LR = 5.0 × 10-4 to 2.2 × 10-3 mol L-1, DL = 7.8 × 10-5 mol L-1, S = 3.7 × 104 μA mol-1 L. For SWV were obtained a LR = 7.5 × 10-6 to 1.2 × 10 -3 mol L-1, DL = 5.5 × 10-6 mol L -1 and S = 2.8 × 105 μA mol-1 L. Thus, the SWV was the most sensible technique, which can be used for DF determination at low concentration levels. Statistics methods were used to evaluate the analytical procedure, where recovery around to 100% was obtained for all voltammetric techniques. Relative standard deviations were lower than 5.0% (N=5). The obtained t values evaluating all the three voltammetric methods were less than the tabulated ones, indicating that there are no evidences of systematic error. ©2005 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The mass of the top quark is measured using a sample of t̄t candidate events with one electron or muon and at least four jets in the final state, collected by CMS in pp collisions at √s =7 TeV at the LHC. A total of 5174 candidate events is selected from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1. For each event the mass is reconstructed from a kinematic fit of the decay products to a t̄t hypothesis. The top-quark mass is determined simultaneously with the jet energy scale (JES), constrained by the known mass of the W boson in q̄q decays, to be 173.49 ± 0.43 (stat. + JES) ±0.98 (syst.) GeV. © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Results are presented from a search for the pair-production of heavy quarks, QQ̄, that decay exclusively into a top quark and a W or Z boson. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1, collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment. The signal region is defined using a sample of events containing one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets with large transverse momenta, where one jet is likely to originate from the decay of a bottom quark. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model expectations. Assuming a strong pair-production mechanism, quark masses below 675 (625) GeV decaying into tW (tZ) are excluded at the 95 % confidence level.[Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

Sugar is widely consumed worldwide and Brazil is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of this product. To guarantee proper development and productivity of sugar cane crops, it is necessary to apply large quantities of agrochemicals, especially herbicides and pesticides. The herbicide tebuthiuron (TBH) prevents pre- and post-emergence of infesting weed in sugarcane cultures. Considering that it is important to ensure food safety for the population, this paper proposes a reliable method to analyse TBH in sugar matrixes (brown and crystal) using square wave voltammetry (SWV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at bare glassy carbon electrode and investigate the electrochemical behavior of this herbicide by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Our results suggest that TBH or the product of its reaction with a supporting electrolyte is oxidized through irreversible transfer of one electron between the analyte and the working electrode, at a potential close to +1.16 V vs. Ag |AgClsat in 0.10 mol L-1 KOH as supporting electrolyte solution. Both DPV and SWV are satisfactory for the quantitative analysis of the analyte. DPV is more sensitive and selective, with detection limits of 0.902, 0.815 and 0.578 mg kg-1, and quantification limits of 0.009, 0.010 and 0.008 mg kg-1 in the absence of the matrix and in the presence of crystal and brown sugar matrix, respectively. Repeatability lay between 0.53 and 13.8%, precision ranged between 4.14 and 15.0%, and recovery remained between 84.2 and 113% in the case of DPV conducted in the absence of matrix and in the presence of the crystal sugar matrix, respectively.

The deposition of Cu2+ and Zn2+ from aqueous solution has been investigated by a combination of classical molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and a theory developed by the authors. For both cases, the reaction proceeds through two one-electron steps. The monovalent ions can get close to the electrode surface without losing hydration energy, while the divalent ions, which have a stronger solvation sheath, cannot. The 4s orbital of Cu interacts strongly with the sp band and more weakly with the d band of the copper surface, while the Zn4s orbital couples only to the sp band of Zn. At the equilibrium potential for the overall reaction, the energy of the intermediate Cu+ ion is only a little higher than that of the divalent ion, so that the first electron transfer can occur in an outer-sphere mode. In contrast, the energy of the Zn+ ion lies too high for a simple outer-sphere reaction to be favorable; in accord with experimental data this suggests that this step is affected by anions.

Ruthenium complexes including nitrosyl or nitrite complexes are particularly interesting because they can not only scavenge but also release nitric oxide in a controlled manner, regulating the NO-level in vivo. The judicious choice of ligands attached to the [RuNO] core has been shown to be a suitable strategy to modulate NO reactivity in these complexes. In order to understand the influence of different equatorial ligands on the electronic structure of the Ru-NO chemical bonding, and thus on the reactivity of the coordinated NO, we propose an investigation of the nature of the Ru-NO chemical bond by means of energy decomposition analysis (EDA), considering tetraamine and tetraazamacrocycles as equatorial ligands, prior to and after the reduction of the {RuNO}(6) moiety by one electron. This investigation provides a deep insight into the Ru-NO bonding situation, which is fundamental in designing new ruthenium nitrosyl complexes with potential biological applications.

Hypertension is a disorder affecting millions worldwide, and is a leading cause of death and debilitation in the United States. It is widely accepted that during hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases the vasculature exhibits endothelial dysfunction; a deficit in the relaxatory ability of the vessel, attributed to a lack of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. Recently, the one electron redox variant of NO, nitroxyl anion (NO-) has emerged as an endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) and a candidate for endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDRF). NO- is thought to exist protonated (HNO) in vivo, which would make this species more resistant to scavenging. However, no studies have investigated the role of this redox species during hypertension, and whether the vasculature loses the ability to relax to HNO. Thus, we hypothesize that aorta from angiotensin II (AngII)-hypertensive mice will exhibit a preserved relaxation response to Angeli's Salt, an HNO donor. Male C57B16 mice, aged 12-14 weeks were implanted with mini-osmotic pumps containing AngII (90 ng/min, 14 days plus high salt chow) or sham surgery. Aorta were excised, cleaned and used to perform functional studies in a myograph. We found that aorta from AngII-hypertensive mice exhibited a significant endothelial dysfunction as demonstrated by a decrease in acetylcholine (ACh)-mediated relaxation. However, vessels from hypertensive mice exhibited a preserved response to Angeli's Salt (AS), the HNO donor. To confirm that relaxation responses to HNO were maintained, concentration response curves (CRCs) to ACh were performed in the presence of scavengers to both NO and HNO (carboxy-PTIO and L-cys, resp.). We found that ACh-mediated relaxation responses were significantly decreased in aorta from sham and almost completely abolished in aorta from AngII-treated mice. Vessels incubated with L-cys exhibited a modest decrease in ACh-mediated relaxations responses. These data demonstrate that aorta from AngII-treated hypertensive mice exhibit a preserved relaxation response to AS, an HNO donor, regardless of a significant endothelial dysfunction.
