A transient 2D axi-symmetric and lumped parameter (LP) model with constant outflow conditions have been developed to study the discharge capacity of an activated carbon bed. The predicted discharge times and variations in bed pressure and temperature are in good agreement with experimental results obtained from a 1.82 l adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage system. Under ambient air conditions, a maximum temperature drop of 29.5 K and 45.5 K are predicted at the bed center for discharge rates of 1.0 l min(-1) and 5.0 l min(-1) respectively. The corresponding discharge efficiencies are 77% and 71.5% respectively with discharge efficiencies improving with decreasing outflow rates. Increasing the LID ratio from 1.9 to 7.8 had only a marginal increase in the discharge efficiency. Forced convection (exhaust gas) heating had a significant effect on the discharge efficiency, leading to efficiencies as high as 92.8% at a discharge of 1.0 l min(-1) and 88.7% at 5 l min(-1). Our study shows that the LP model can be reliably used to obtain discharge times due to the uniform pressure distributions in the bed. Temperature predictions with the LP model were more accurate at ambient conditions and higher discharge rates, due to greater uniformity in bed temperatures. For the low thermal conductivity carbon porous beds, our study shows that exhaust gas heating can be used as an effective and convenient strategy to improve the discharge characteristics and performance of an ANG system. The growth rate of high-speed mixing layer between two dissimilar gases is explored through the model free simulation results. To analyse the cause for the higher mixing layer growth rate in comparison to the existing values reported in literature, the results were compared with the model free simulations of mixing of two high-speed streams of nitrogen (similar gas) at matched temperature and density. The analysis indicates that pressure and density fluctuations no longer remain correlated completely for the mixing layer formed between two dissimilar gases at different temperatures in contrast to the complete pressure density correlation for similar gases. It has been observed that the correlation between temperature and density fluctuations is near -1.0 for dissimilar gases in the mixing layer region and is much higher than for similar gases. It is concluded that mixing layer of similar gases shows a decrease in growth rate due to compressibility effect, while that of dissimilar gases shows a decrease due to dominant temperature effect on density.

Two novel supersonic nozzles Tip Ring Supersonic Nozzle and Elliptic Sharp Tipped Shallow (ESTS) Lobed Nozzle have been developed to enhance mixing at high speeds which is beneficial to supersonic ejectors. A circular ring protruding at the exit of a conical nozzle forms the tip ring nozzle. The innovative ESTS lobed nozzle comprising of four elliptic lobes with sharp tips that do not protrude deep into the core supersonic flow is produced by a novel yet simple methodology. A comparative experimental study is conducted between a conical nozzle, an ESTS lobed nozzle and a tip ring nozzle with exit Mach number of 2.3. For the first time, the three dimensional flow structure from ESTS lobed nozzle and tip ring nozzle is revealed from laser scattering flow visualization experiments on the free jet. A doubling of jet spreading rate is observed in the ESTS lobed nozzle. When applied to a supersonic ejector, both nozzles achieve a 30% increase in entrainment of secondary flow. The loss of compression ratio is 15% for the ESTS lobed nozzle while it is 50% for the tip ring nozzle. Further, the behavior of wall static pressure profile corroborates mixing enhancement. We present here observations on diurnal and seasonal variation of mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2, from an urban station-Bangalore (BLR), India, monitored between October 2008 and December 2011. On a diurnal scale, higher mixing ratio with depleted delta C-13 of air CO2 was found for the samples collected during early morning compared to the samples collected during late afternoon. On a seasonal scale, mixing ratio was found to be higher for dry summer months (April-May) and lower for southwest monsoon months (June-July). The maximum enrichment in delta C-13 of air CO2 (-8.04 +/- 0.02aEuro degrees) was seen in October, then delta C-13 started depleting and maximum depletion (-9.31 +/- 0.07aEuro degrees) was observed during dry summer months. Immediately after that an increasing trend in delta C-13 was monitored coincidental with the advancement of southwest monsoon months and maximum enrichment was seen again in October. Although a similar pattern in seasonal variation was observed for the three consecutive years, the dry summer months of 2011 captured distinctly lower amplitude in both the mixing ratio and delta C-13 of air CO2 compared to the dry summer months of 2009 and 2010. This was explained with reduced biomass burning and increased productivity associated with prominent La Nina condition. While compared with the observations from the nearest coastal and open ocean stations-Cabo de Rama (CRI) and Seychelles (SEY), BLR being located within an urban region captured higher amplitude of seasonal variation. The average delta C-13 value of the end member source CO2 was identified based on both diurnal and seasonal scale variation. The delta C-13 value of source CO2 (-24.9 +/- 3aEuro degrees) determined based on diurnal variation was found to differ drastically from the source value (-14.6 +/- 0.7aEuro degrees) identified based on seasonal scale variation. The source CO2 identified based on diurnal variation incorporated both early morning and late afternoon sample; whereas, the source CO2 identified based on seasonal variation included only afternoon samples. Thus, it is evident from the study that sampling timing is one of the important factors while characterizing the composition of end member source CO2 for a particular station. The difference in delta C-13 value of source CO2 obtained based on both diurnal and seasonal variation might be due to possible contribution from cement industry along with fossil fuel / biomass burning as predominant sources for the station along with differential meteorological conditions prevailed.

The behaviour of turbulent Prandtl/Schmidt number is explored through the model-free simulation results. It has been observed that compressibility affects the Reynolds scalar flux vectors. Reduced peak values are also observed for compressible convective Mach number mixing layer as compared with the incompressible convective Mach number counterpart, indicating a reduction in the mixing of enthalpy and species. Pr-t and Sc-t variations also indicate a reduction in mixing. It is observed that unlike the incompressible case, it is difficult to assign a constant value to these numbers due to their continuous variation in space. Modelling of Pr-t and Sc-t would be necessary to cater for this continuous spatial variation. However, the turbulent Lewis number is evaluated to be near unity for the compressible case, making it necessary to model only one of the Pr-t and Sc-t..

The issue of growth rate reduction of high speed mixing layer with convective Mach number is examined for similar and dissimilar gases using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methodology with k- turbulence model. It is observed that the growth rate predicted using RANS simulations closely matches with that predicted using model free simulations. Velocity profiles do not depend on the modelled value of Pr-t and Sc-t; while the temperature and species mass fraction distributions depend heavily on them. Although basic k- turbulence model could not capture the reduced growth rate for the mixing layer formed between similar gases, it predicts very well the reduced growth rate for the mixing layer for the dissimilar gases. It appears that density ratio changes caused by temperature changes for the dissimilar gases have profound effect on the growth rate reduction.

Illegal harvest rates of wildlife populations are often unknown or difficult to estimate from field data due to under-reporting or incomplete detection of carcasses. This is especially true for elephants that are killed for ivory or in conflicts with people. We describe a method to infer harvest rates from coarse field data of three population parameters, namely, adult female to male ratio, male old-adult to young-adult ratio, and proportion of adult males in the population using Jensen's (2000) 2-sex, density-dependent Leslie matrix model. The specific combination of male and female harvest rates and numbers can be determined from the history of harvest and estimate of population size. We applied this technique to two populations of elephants for which data on age structure and records of mortality were available-a forest-dwelling population of the Asian elephant (at Nagarahole, India) and an African savannah elephant population (at Samburu, Kenya) that had experienced male-biased harvest regimes over 2-3 decades. For the Nagarahole population, the recorded numbers of male and female elephants killed illegally during 1981-2000 were 64% and 88% of the values predicted by the model, respectively, implying some non-detection or incomplete reporting while for the Samburu population the recorded and modeled numbers of harvest during 1990-1999 closely matched. This technique, applicable to any animal population following logistic growth model, can be especially useful for inferring illegal harvest numbers of forest elephants in Africa and Asia. The room-temperature synthesis of mono-dispersed gold nanoparticles, by the reduction of chlorauric acid (HAuCl4) with tannic acid as the reducing and stabilizing agent, is carried out in a microchannel. The microchannel is fabricated with one soft wall, so that there is a spontaneous transition to turbulence, and thereby enhanced mixing, when the flow Reynolds number increases beyond a critical value. The objective of the study is to examine whether the nanoparticle size and polydispersity can be modified by enhancing the mixing in the microchannel device. The flow rates are varied in order to study nanoparticle formation both in laminar flow and in the chaotic flow after transition, and the molar ratio of the chlorauric acid to tannic acid is also varied to study the effect of molar ratio on nanoparticle size. The formation of gold nanoparticles is examined by UV-visual spectroscopy and the size distribution is determined using scanning electron microscopy. The synthesized nanoparticles size decreases from a parts per thousand yen6 nm to a parts per thousand currency sign4 nm when the molar ratio of chlorauric acid to tannic acid is increased from 1 to 20. It is found that there is no systematic variation of nanoparticle size with flow velocity, and the nanoparticle size is not altered when the flow changes from laminar to turbulent. However, the standard deviation of the size distribution decreases by about 30% after transition, indicating that the enhanced mixing results in uniformity of particle size.

We perform two and three dimensional numerical simulations of plume formation in density and viscosity stratified fluid systems. We show that the ambient to plume fluid viscosity ratio strongly affects the near wall plume structures (line or sheet plumes) such as plume spacing and shape of plumes. We observe that where mushroom-like plumes are observed for lower viscosity ratios, taller plumes with bulbous heads form for high viscosity ratios. Plume structure and spacing are in good agreement with experimental results. By studying the geometry of the line plumes and the flow in the circulation cells, we discuss the mechanisms of their formation and the dynamics of merging. We show that an increase in the viscosity ratio decreases the total length of line plumes in the planform which indicates a decreased mixing at higher viscosity ratios. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The link between atmospheric CO2 level and ventilation state of the deep ocean is poorly understood due to the lack of coherent observations on the partitioning of carbon between atmosphere and ocean. In this Southern Ocean study, we have classified the Southern Ocean into different zones based on its hydrological features and have binned the variability in latitudinal air-CO2 concentration and its isotopic ratios. Together with air-CO2, we analysed the surface water for the isotopic ratios in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Using the binary mixing approach on the isotopic ratio of atmospheric CO2 and its concentration, we identified the delta C-13 value of source CO2. The isotopic composition of source CO2 was around -9.22 +/- 0.26 parts per thousand for the year 2011 and 2012, while a composition of -13.49 +/- 4.07 parts per thousand was registered for the year 2013. We used the delta C-13 of DIC to predict the CO2 composition in air under equilibrium and compared our estimates with actual observations. We suggest that the degeneration of the DIC in presence of warm water in the region was the factor responsible for adding the CO2 to the atmosphere above. The place of observation coincides with the zone of high wind speed which promotes the process of CO2 exsolution from sea water. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The current work reports quantitative OH species concentration in the cavity of a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) in the context of mixing and flame stabilization studies using both syngas and methane fuels. Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements of OH radical obtained using a Nd: YAG pumped dye laser are quantified using a flat flame McKenna burner. The momentum flux ratio (MFR), defined as the ratio of the cavity fuel jet momentum to that of the guide vane air stream, is observed to be a key governing parameter. At high MFRs similar to 4.5, the flame front is observed to form at the interface of the fuel jet and the air jet stream. This is substantiated by velocity vector field measurements. For syngas, as the MFR is lowered to similar to 0.3, the fuel-air mixing increases and a flame front is formed at the bottom and downstream edge of the cavity where a stratified charge is present. This trend is observed for different velocities at similar equivalence ratios. In case of methane combustion in the cavity, where the MFRs employed are extremely low at similar to 0.01, a different mechanism is observed. A fuel-rich mixture is now observed at the center of the cavity and this mixture undergoes combustion. On further increase of the cavity equivalence ratio, the rich mixture exceeds the flammability limit and forms a thin reaction zone at the interface with air stream. As a consequence, a shear layer flame at the top of the cavity interface with the mainstream is also observed. The equivalence ratio in the cavity also determines the combustion characteristics in the case of fuel-air mixtures that are formed as a result of the mixing. Overall, flame stabilization mechanisms have been proposed, which account for the wide range of MFRs and premixing in the mainstream as well.

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC have performed analyses on the existing data sets, studying the case of one vector-like fermion or multiplet coupling to the standard model Yukawa sector. In the near future, with more data available, these experimental collaborations will start to investigate more realistic cases. The presence of more than one extra vector-like multiplet is indeed a common situation in many extensions of the standard model. The interplay of these vector-like multiplet between precision electroweak bounds, flavour and collider phenomenology is a important question in view of establishing bounds or for the discovery of physics beyond the standard model. In this work we study the phenomenological consequences of the presence of two vector-like multiplets. We analyse the constraints on such scenarios from tree-level data and oblique corrections for the case of mixing to each of the SM generations. In the present work, we limit to scenarios with two top-like partners and no mixing in the down-sector.

Analytical and numerical studies of secondary electro-osmotic flow EOF and its mixing in microchannels with heterogeneous zeta potentials are carried out in the present work. The secondary EOFs are analyzed by solving the Stokes equation with heterogeneous slip velocity boundary conditions. The analytical results obtained are compared with the direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The secondary EOFs could transport scalar in larger areas and increase the scalar gradients, which significantly improve the mixing rate of scalars. It is shown that the heterogeneous zeta potentials could generate complex flow patterns and be used to enhance scalar mixing.

A theoretical expression for vertical profile-of horizontal velocity in terms of its depth-average is derived based on oscillatory boundary layer theory and estuarine flow characteristics. The derived theoretical profile is then incorporated into a vertical quasi-two-dimensional model, which is proved advantageous in more physical implications and less CPU time demand. To validate the proposed model, the calculated results are compared to the field data in the Yangtze River Estuary, exhibiting good agreement with observations. The proposed quasi-two-dimensional vertical model is used to study mixing process, especially dependence of salinity distribution and salt front strength on runoff and tides in estuaries.

The three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are approximated by a fifth order upwind compact and a sixth order symmetrical compact difference relations combined with three-stage Ronge-Kutta method. The computed results are presented for convective Mach number Mc = 0.8 and Re = 200 with initial data which have equal and opposite oblique waves. From the computed results we can see the variation of coherent structures with time integration and full process of instability, formation of Lambda-vortices, double horseshoe vortices and mushroom structures. The large structures break into small and smaller vortex structures. Finally, the movement of small structure becomes dominant, and flow field turns into turbulence. It is noted that production of small vortex structures is combined with turning of symmetrical structures to unsymmetrical ones. It is shown in the present computation that the flow field turns into turbulence directly from initial instability and there is not vortex pairing in process of transition. It means that for large convective Mach number the transition mechanism for compressible mixing layer differs from that in incompressible mixing layer.
