Chronic renal failure (CRF) leads in the majority of instances to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring renal replacement therapy. Age, gender, genetics, race, hypertension, and smoking among others are factors associated with ESRD. Our interest was to evaluate the possible associations of class I and II HLA antigens with ESRD renal disease independent of other factors, among patients with CRF, having various diagnoses in the Brazilian population of the Sao Paulo state. So 21 HLA-A, 31 HLA-B, and 13 HLA-DR were detected in 105 patients who were compared with 160 healthy controls of both sexes who were not related to the patients evaluated until 2005. We calculated allelic frequencies, haplotypes frequencies, etiological fractions (EF), preventive fractions, and relative risks (RR). We compared demographic data of patients and controls. The antigens positively associated with ESRD were: HLA-A78 (RR = 30.31 and EF = 0.96) and HLA-DR11 (RR = 18.87 and EF = 0.65). The antigens HLAB14 (RR = 29.90 and EF = 0.75) was present at a significantly lower frequency among patients compared with controls. In contrast, no haplotype frequency showed statically significant associations. Further molecular studies may clarify types and subtypes of alleles involved with ESRD progression.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in cardiac remodeling and are encoded by genes showing genetic polymorphisms that have functional implications. We examined whether MMP-9 genetic polymorphisms are associated with hypertension and with left ventricular (LV) remodeling in hypertensive patients. Methods: We studied 173 hypertensive patients and 137 age, race and gender matched healthy controls. Heart echocardiography was performed in all patients and the following MMP-9 genetic polymorphisms were analyzed: C-(1562)T (rs3918242). -90 (CA)(14-24) (rs2234681) and Q279R (rs17576). Haplo.stats analysis was used to assess whether MMP-9 haplotypes are associated with hypertension. Linear regression analysis was performed to assess whether MMP-9 haplotypes affect LV mass index (LVMI) and other echocardiography parameters. Results: MMP-9 90 (CA)14-24 ""HH"" genotype (H allele defined by number of CA repeats >= 21) was associated with hypertension (P = 0.0085; OR = 2.321, 95% confidence interval = 1.250 to 4.309). While one MMP-9 haplotype (""C. H, Q"") protects against LVMI and end-diastolic diameter increases due to remodeling (P = 0.0490 and P = 0.0367), another MMP-9 haplotype apparently has detrimental effects over both parameters in hypertensive patients (""T, H. Q"", P = 0.0015 and P = 0.0057. respectively). Conclusion: Genetic polymorphisms in MMP-9 gene may modify the susceptibility of hypertensive patients to LV remodeling. Further studies are necessary to examine whether these polymorphisms affect clinical events in hypertensive patients. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This chapter examines the relationship between globalisation and technological progress. It computes an annual and country specific measure of technological gap, the technology ratio (TGR), using a recently proposed method known as metafrontiers. The TGR is measured as the distance from a group frontier to the global (or meta) frontier. The TGRs provide a measure to compare technological capability across countries. The ranking obtained from the metafrontiers method is first compared to other methods based on the direct measure of patents, science articles, schooling etc. The TGRs are then related to levels of trade openness and inbound and outbound foreign direct investment within regions and overtime in an effort to identify the relationship between technological gap and outward orientation.

Objective To compare the cardiorespiratory, anesthetic-sparing effects and quality of anesthetic recovery after epidural and constant rate intravenous (IV) infusion of dexmedetomidine (DEX) in cats given a low dose of epidural lidocaine under propofol-isoflurane anesthesia and submitted to elective ovariohysterectomy. Study design Randomized, blinded clinical trial. Animals Twenty-one adult female cats ( mean body weight: 3.1 +/- 0.4 kg). Methods Cats received DEX (4 mu g kg(-1), IM). Fifteen minutes later, anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane. Cats were divided into three groups. In GI cats received epidural lidocaine (1 mg kg(-1), n = 7), in GII cats were given epidural lidocaine (1 mg kg(-1)) + DEX (4 mu g kg(-1), n = 7), and in GIII cats were given epidural lidocaine (1 mg kg(-1)) + IV constant rate infusion (CRI) of DEX (0.25 mu g kg(-1) minute(-1), n = 7). Variables evaluated included heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (f(R)), systemic arterial pressures, rectal temperature (RT), end-tidal CO(2), end-tidal isoflurane concentration (E`ISO), arterial blood gases, and muscle tone. Anesthetic recovery was compared among groups by evaluation of times to recovery, HR, f(R), RT, and degree of analgesia. A paired t-test was used to evaluate pre-medication variables and blood gases within groups. ANOVA was used to compare parametric data, whereas Friedman test was used to compare muscle relaxation. Results Epidural and CRI of DEX reduced HR during anesthesia maintenance. Mean +/- SD E/ISO ranged from 0.86 +/- 0.28% to 1.91 +/- 0.63% in GI, from 0.70 +/- 0.12% to 0.97 +/- 0.20% in GII, and from 0.69 +/- 0.12% to 1.17 +/- 0.25% in GIII. Cats in GII and GIII had longer recovery periods than in GI. Conclusions and clinical relevance Epidural and CRI of DEX significantly decreased isoflurane consumption and resulted in recovery of better quality and longer duration, despite bradycardia, without changes in systemic blood pressure.

Recently, superior cervical ganglionectomy has been performed to investigate a variety of scientific topics from regulation of intraocular pressure to suppression of lingual tumour growth. Despite these recent advances in our understanding of the functional mechanisms underlying superior cervical ganglion (SCG) growth and development after surgical ablation, there still exists a need for information concerning the quantitative nature of the relationships between the removed SCG and its remaining contralateral ganglion and between the remaining SCG and its modified innervation territory. To this end, using design-based stereological methods, we have investigated the structural changes induced by unilateral ganglionectomy in sheep at three distinct timepoints (2, 7 and 12 weeks) after surgery. The effects of time, and lateral (left-right) differences, were examined by two-way analyses of variance and paired t-tests. Following removal of the left SCG, the main findings were: (i) the remaining right SCG was bigger at shorter survival times, i.e. 74% at 2 weeks, 55% at 7 weeks and no increase by 12 weeks, (ii) by 7 weeks after surgery, the right SCG contained fewer neurons (no decrease at 2 weeks, 6% fewer by 7 weeks and 17% fewer by 12 weeks) and (iii) by 7 weeks, right SCG neurons were also larger and the magnitude of this increase grew substantially with time (no rise at 2 weeks, 77% by 7 weeks and 215% by 12 weeks). Interaction effects between time and ganglionectomy-induced changes were significant for SCG volume and mean perikaryal volume. These findings show that unilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy has profound effects on the contralateral ganglion. For future investigations, it would be interesting to examine the interaction between SCGs and their innervation targets after ganglionectomy. Is the ganglionectomy-induced imbalance between the sizes of innervation territories the milieu in which morphoquantitative changes, particularly changes in perikaryal volume and neuron number, occur? Mechanistically, how would those changes arise? Are there any grounds for believing in a ganglionectomy-triggered SCG cross-innervation and neuroplasticity? (C) 2011 ISDN. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The study evaluated the efficiency of diagnostic laboratory methods to detect anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in paired serum and aqueous humour samples from experimentally infected pigs. 18-mixed breed pigs were used during the experiment; these were divided into two groups, G I (infected group, n = 10) and G2 (uninfected group, n = 8). Infection was performed with 4 x 10(4) VEG strain oocysts at day 0 by the oral route in G1 animals. All pigs were euthanized at day 60, when retina, aqueous humour, and blood samples were collected. Anti-T gondii antibody levels were assessed in serum (s) and aqueous humour (ah) by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA), modified agglutination test (MAT), m-ELISA (using crude membranes from T gondii tachyzoites as antigen) and r-ELISA (using rhoptries from T gondii tachyzoites as antigen). Polymerase chain reactions (PCR) of samples from the retina were performed by using Tox4 and Tox5 primers. Antibody titers of G1 animals ranged from 128 to 1024 and from 16 to 256 in serum and aqueous humour, respectively. There were differences in the correlation coefficients between IFA(s) x IFA (ah) (r = 0.62, P = 0.05), MAT(s) x MAT (ah) (r = 0.97, P < 0.0001); however, there was no significant difference between r-ELISA(s) x r-ELISA (ah) (r = 0. 14, P = 0.7). Antibodies present in serum and aqueous humour recognized similar antigens. Samples of retina were positive by PCR in 30% (3/10) of infected pigs. G2 animals remained without antibody levels and were PCR negative throughout the experiment. These results suggest that the use of a combination of tests and immunoblotting for paired aqueous humour and serum samples could improve the sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis.
