A low-pressure methane plasma generated by electron cyclotron wave resonance was characterized in terms of electron temperature, plasma density and composition. Methane plasmas were commonly used in the deposition of hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films. Little variation in the plasma chemistry was observed by mass spectrometry measurements of the gas phase with increasing electron temperature. The results show that direct electron-impact reactions exert greater influence on the plasma chemistry than secondary ion-neutral reactions.

A formulation for coupled flow-deformation analysis of methane-hydrate extraction problems is presented. By assuming that the hydrate does not flow, a two phase flow formulation is considered, based on Darcy's law and capillary pressure relation. The formulation is implemented in the finite difference code FLAC. The code was used to investigate the stability of a methane extraction well by depressurizing the well. © 2005 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In this paper we study the effect of population age distribution upon private consumption expenditure in Spain from 1964 to 1997 using aggregate data. We obtain four main results. First, changes in the population pyramid have substantial effects upon the behaviour of private consumption. Second, the pattern of the coefficients of the demographic variables is not consistent with the simplest version of the life cycle hypothesis. Third, we estimate the impact of the demographic transition upon consumption and find positive values associated with episodes in which the shares of groups of individuals with expenditure levels higher (lower) than the mean increased (decreased). Fourth, the results are robust to alternative specifications for the population age distribution.

We extend the classic Merton (1969, 1971) problem that investigates the joint consumption-savings and portfolio-selection problem under capital risk by assuming sophisticated but time-inconsistent agents. We introduce stochastic hyperbolic preferences as in Harris and Laibson (2013) and find closed-form solutions for Merton's optimal consumption and portfolio selection problem in continuous time. We find that the portfolio rule remains identical to the time-consistent solution with power utility and no borrowing constraints. However,the marginal propensity to consume out of wealth is unambiguously greater than the time-consistent, exponential case and,importantly, it is also more responsive to changes in risk. These results suggest that hyperbolic discounting with sophisticated agents offers promise for contributing to explaining important aspects of asset market data.

En la presente tesis doctoral se ha estudiado la integración del proceso de producción de hidrógeno con su purificación mediante el empleo de membranas selectivas de hidrógeno. La producción de hidrógeno se realiza empleando catalizadores no convencionales de níquel soportado sobre magnesia y alúmina en un reactor catalítico. Se analiza la actividad de los catalizadores y la producción de hidrógeno mediante distintos procesos con metano como son la oxidación parcial catalítica (OPC), OPC húmeda y reformadoLa purificación de hidrógeno se realiza en un módulo provisto de una membrana selectiva de hidrógeno de PdCu depositado en un soporte poroso cerámico. Una vez optimizada su preparación mediante deposición no electrolítica se caracterizan. Para ello se determina su permeabilidad a distintas temperaturas y realizando ciclos térmicos en atmósferas inerte y de hidrógeno, que puede fragilizar el metal. Una vez preparados los catalizadores y las membranas se integran los dos sistemas y se determinan los parámetros de operación óptimos como la presión de la línea de alimentación y el caudal de gas de arrastre en el módulo de membrana. Ambos parámetros se optimizan para lograr la máxima recuperación de hidrógeno en el módulo de membrana. Por últimos se realizan ensayos completos de producción y purificación, que permiten observar el rendimiento del sistema y también el efecto que los compuestos de la mezcla compleja alimentada a las membranas tienen en su comportamiento. Para concluir la integración de procesos se realizan ensayos añadiendo azufre de forma que el sistema sea más similar al proceso real. Esto permite también analizar el efecto del azufre tanto en los catalizadores como en las membranas.

Effects of flame stretch on the laminar burning velocities of near-limit fuel-lean methane/air flames have been studied experimentally using a microgravity environment to minimize the complications of buoyancy. Outwardly propagating spherical flames were employed to assess the sensitivities of the laminar burning velocity to flame stretch, represented by Markstein lengths, and the fundamental laminar burning velocities of unstretched flames. Resulting data were reported for methane/air mixtures at ambient temperature and pressure, over the specific range of equivalence ratio that extended from 0.512 (the microgravity flammability limit found in the combustion chamber) to 0.601. Present measurements of unstretched laminar burning velocities were in good agreement with the unique existing microgravity data set at all measured equivalence ratios. Most of previous 1-g experiments using a variety of experimental techniques, however, appeared to give significantly higher burning velocities than the microgravity results. Furthermore, the burning velocities predicted by three chemical reaction mechanisms, which have been tuned primarily under off-limit conditions, were also considerably higher than the present experimental data. Additional results of the present investigation were derived for the overall activation energy and corresponding Zeldovich numbers, and the variation of the global flame Lewis numbers with equivalence ratio. The findings are presented of a nutrition survey carried out in the framework of the Nigerian-German Kainji Lake Fisheries Promotion Project in March/April 1995. The major aim of the study was to obtain closer information on the food habits and food consumption patterns of the fishing population, especially the quantification of fish and small fish in particular, consumed at the household level. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect relevant information on demographic, education and occupational profiles; the information was collected in 39 villages in the southern sector of Kainji Lake.
