The influence of the chemical composition and silylation of mesoporous MCM-41 materials on the photochromic behaviour of adsorbed spiropyran (BIPS) and 6-nitrospiropyran was studied. Upon incorporation, the spiropyrans underwent ring opening to form either zwitterionic merocyanine or its corresponding O-protonated form. In all silica MCM-41 or in the MCM-41 containing aluminium, the O-protonated merocyanine was predominantly formed. In the case of MCM-41 modified by silylation of the OH groups, a mixture of zwitterionic merocyanine and spiropyran was present. The photochromic response was studied by means of steady-state irradiation and by laser flash photolysis. Steady-state irradiation (λ > 450 nm) of the solid samples gives rise in all cases to an intensity decrease of the absorption bands corresponding to either the protonated or the unprotonated merocyanine form (reverse photochromism). In contrast, laser flash photolysis at 308 nm of spiropyrans supported on silylated MCM-41 allows observation of the photochemical ring opening of residual spiropyran to the corresponding zwitterionic form (normal photochromism).

The present work describes the immobilization of α-amylase over well ordered mesoporous molecular sieve SBA-15 with different pore diameters synthesized by post synthesis treatment (PST) hydrothermally after reaction at 40°C. The materials were characterized by N 2 adsorption–desorption studies, small angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Since α-amylase obtained from Bacillus subtilis has dimensions of 35 × 40 × 70 Å it is expected that the protein have access to the pore of SBA-15 (PST-120°C) with diameter 74 Å. The pore dimension is appropriate to prevent considerable leaching. The rate of adsorption of the enzyme on silica of various pore sizes revealed the influence of morphology, pore diameter, pore volume and pH.

The synthesis of highly ordered mesoporous tungsteno-silicas in which a high percentage of tungsten is introduced into a silica framework is reported hereafter. Powder XRD and TEM have been used to characterize the materials synthesized at room temperature. The materials are shown to be homogeneous as there is no evidence for any crystalline species other than the silica framework. The pore diameter and the surface area of the materials, evaluated from the nitrogen adsorption isotherms and unit cell parameter indicate a pore diameter of about 2 nm and a surface area of 1400 m(2) g(-1) for a content of 10% tungsten. Catalyzed dehydration of 2-propanol has been investigated and the activity of the materials synthesized is significant, even for low tungsten content W-MCM-41 materials. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. This work describes the covalent grafting of 3,4,9,10-perylenediimides (PDI), which are fluorescent dyes with very interesting optical properties, onto the walls of mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and SBA-15. The mesoporous materials were first treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in anhydrous toluene, generating amine-containing surfaces. The amine-containing materials were then reacted with 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCA), generating surface-grafted PDI. Infrared spectra of the materials showed that the reaction with amino groups took place at both anhydride ends of the PTCA molecule, resulting in surface attached diimides. No sign of unreacted anhydride groups were found. The new materials, designated as MCMN2PDI and SBAN(2)PDI, presented absorption and emission spectra corresponding to weakly coupled PDI chromophores, in contrast to the strongly coupled rings usually found in solid PDI samples. The materials showed a red fluorescence, which could be observed by the naked eye under UV irradiation or with a fluorescence microscope. The PDI-modified mesoporous materials showed electrical conductivity when pressed into a pellet. The results presented here show that the new materials are potentially useful in the design of nanowires. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The performance of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with SBA-15 nanostructured silica organofunctionalised with 2-benzothiazolethiol in the simultaneous determination of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions in natural water and sugar cane spirit (cachaca) is described. Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) were pre-concentrated on the surface of the modified electrode by complexing with 2-benzothiazolethiol and reduced at a negative potential (-0.80 V). Then the reduced products were oxidised by DPASV procedure. The fact that three stripping peaks appeared on the voltammograms at the potentials of -0.48 V (Pb2+), -0.03 V (Cu2+) and +0.36 V (Hg2+) in relation to the SCE, demonstrates the possibility of simultaneous determination of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+. The best results were obtained under the following optimised conditions: 100 mV pulse amplitude, 3 min accumulation time, 25 mV s(-1) scan rate in phosphate solution pH 3.0. Using such parameters, calibration graphs were linear in the concentration ranges of 3.00-70.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Pb2+), 8.00-100.0 X 10(-7) mol L-1 (Cu2+) and 2.00-10.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 (Hg2+). Detection limits of 4.0 x 10(-8) mol L-1 (Pb2+), 2.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Cu2+) and 4.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Hg2+) were obtained at the signal noise ratio (SNR) of 3. The results indicate that this electrode is sensitive and effective for simultaneous determination of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ in the analysed samples. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this work, mesoporous titania is prepared by templating latex sphere arrays with four different sphere diameters at the micrometric scale (phi > 1 mu m). The mesoporous titania homogeneously covers the latex spheres and substrate, forming a thin coating characterized by N-2 adsorption isotherm, small angle X-rays scattering, atomic force, field emission and transmission electronic microscopies. Mesoporous titania has been templated into different shapes such as hollow particles and monoliths according to the amount of sol used to fill the voids of the close packed latex spheres. Titania topography strongly depends on the adsorption of polymeric segments over latex spheres surface, which could be decreased by changing the dimensions of latex spheres (phi = 9.5 mu m) generating a lamellar architecture. Thus, micrometric latex sphere arrays can be used to achieve new surface patterns for mesoporous materials via a fast and inexpensive chemical route for construction of functional devices in different technological fields such as energy conversion, inclusion chemistry and biomaterials. Development of new silica membranes properties, e.g., molecular sieving properties, has been increasingly gaining importance in the last few years. A novel unsupported silica membrane, referred to as hydrophobic metal-doped silica, was developed by cobalt-doping within the organic templated silica matrix. The novel material was prepared by the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation process of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), which is the precursor for methyl ligand covalently bounded to the silica matrix. The synthesis and surface properties of the novel unsupported silica membrane as well as the unsupported blank silica and modified silica membranes were revealed by surface and microstructural techniques, such as water contact angle measurement, FTIR, X-ray, Solid-state 29Si MAS NMR, TGA and N2 and CO2 adsorption measurements. The results showed that the thermal stability of the organic templated silica matrix was enhanced by cobalt-doping process. A hydrophobic microporous silica membrane material with high thermal stability up to ∼560 °C in oxidizing atmosphere and a narrow pore size distribution centered at 1.1 nm was obtained. Therefore, a novel precursor material for molecular sieve silica membranes applications has been achieved and developed.

Two series of mesoporous hybrid iron(III) complex–silica aerogels were prepared in one-pot synthesis by using the sol–gel coordination chemistry approach. The use of the ligands 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane and 2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyltriethoxysilane, both with terminal triethoxysilyl groups, were used to incorporate metal complexes in situ into the framework of silica, through their co-condensation with a silicon alkoxide during the aerogel formation. This methodology yielded optically translucent hybrid mesoporous gels with homogeneous metal incorporation and excellent textural properties. The catalytic performance of these materials was tested in the direct amination of allylic alcohols in water as a target reaction, with activities comparable or even higher than those corresponding to the homogeneous iron(III) complex. Furthermore, these catalysts were stable and maintained their catalytic activity after six reaction cycles.

We study here the adsorption of hexane on nanoporous MCM-41 silica at 303, 313, and 323 K, for various pore diameters between 2.40 and 4.24 nm. Adsorption equilibria, measured thermogravimetrically, show that all the isotherms, that are somewhat akin to those of type V, exhibit remarkably sharp capillary adsorption phase transition steps and are reversible. The position of the phase transition step gradually shifts from low to high relative pressure with an increase in the temperature as well as the pore sizes. The isosteric heats of adsorption derived from the equilibrium information using the Clapeyron equation reveal a gradual decrease with increasing adsorbed amount because of the surface heterogeneity but approach a constant value near the phase transition. A decrease in the pore size results in an increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption because of the increased dispersion forces. A simple strategy, based on the Broekhoff and De Boer adsorption theory, successfully interprets the hexane adsorption isotherms for the different pore size MCM-41 samples. The parameters of an empirical expression, used to represent the potential of interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, are obtained by fitting the monolayer region prior to capillary condensation and the experimental phase transition simultaneously, for some pore sizes. Subsequently, the parameters are used to predict the adsorption isotherm on other pore size samples, which showed good agreement with experimental data.

Highly ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) with different compositions have been synthesized by a combination of surfactant templating, sol-gel method and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) processes. The texture properties and compositional homogeneity of MBGs have been characterized and compared with conventional bioactive glasses (BGs) synthesized in the absence of surfactants by evaporation method. The formation mechanism (pore - composition dependence) and compositional homogeneity in the case of MBG materials are different from those in conventional BGs. Unlike conventional sol-gel-derived BGs that shows a direct correlation between their composition and pore architecture, MBGs with different compositions may possess similar pore volume and uniformly distributed pore size when the same structure-directing agent is utilized. The framework of MBG is homogeneously distributed in composition at the nanoscale and the inorganic species generally exists in the form of amorphous phase. MBGs calcined at temperatures

A systematic study on the structural properties and external morphologies of large-pore mesoporous organosilicas synthesized using triblock copolymer EO20PO70EO20 as a template under low-acid conditions was carried out. By employing the characterization techniques of SAXS, FE-SEM, and physical adsorption of N-2 in combination with alpha(s)-plot method, the structural properties and external morphologies of large-pore mesoporous organosilicas were critically examined and compared with that of their pure-silica counterparts synthesized under similar conditions. It has been observed that unlike mesoporous pure silicas, the structural and morphological properties of mesoporous organosilicas are highly acid-sensitive. High-quality mesoporous organosilicas can only be obtained from synthesis gels with the molar ratios of HCl/H2O between 7.08 x 10(-4) and 6.33 x 10(-3), whereas mesoporous pure silicas with well-ordered structure can be obtained in a wider range of acid concentration. Simply by adjusting the HCl/H2O molar ratios, the micro-, meso-, and macroporosities of the organosilica materials can be finely tuned without obvious effect on their structural order. Such a behavior is closely related to their acid-controlled morphological evolution: from necklacelike fibers to cobweb-supported pearl-like particles and to nanosized particulates.

Nitrogen adsorption on a surface of a non-porous reference material is widely used in the characterization. Traditionally, the enhancement of solid-fluid potential in a porous solid is accounted for by incorporating the surface curvature into the solid-fluid Potential of the flat reference surface. However, this calculation procedure has not been justified experimentally. In this paper, we derive the solid-fluid potential of mesoporous MCM-41 solid by using solely the adsorption isotherm of that solid. This solid-fluid potential is then compared with that of the non-porous reference surface. In derivation of the solid-fluid potential for both reference surface and mesoporous MCM-41 silica (diameter ranging front 3 to 6.5 nm) we employ the nonlocal density functional theory developed for amorphous solids. It is found that, to out, surprise, the solid-fluid potential of a porous solid is practically the same as that for the reference surface, indicating that there is no enhancement due to Surface curvature. This requires further investigations to explain this unusual departure from our conventional wisdom of curvature-induced enhancement. Accepting the curvature-independent solid-fluid potential derived from the non-porous reference surface, we analyze the hysteresis features of a series of MCM-41 samples. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc.
