Nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with a soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 500 degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the elevation of annealing temperatures. Uniform and crack free non-patterned phosphor films were obtained, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 70 nm. Using micro-molding in capillaries technique, we obtained homogeneous and defects-free patterned gel and crystalline phosphor films with different stripe widths (5, 10, 20 and 50 mum). Significant shrinkage (50%) was observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped Eu3+ showed its characteristic emission in crystalline Y2O3 phosphor films due to an efficient energy transfer from Y2O3 host to them. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the Eu3+ increased with increasing the annealing temperature from 500 to 900 degreesC, and the optimum concentrations for Eu3+ were determined to be 5 mol%.

Nanocrystalline Gd2O3:A (A = Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with a soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 500 degreesC and that the crystallinity increased with the elevation of annealing temperatures. Uniform and crack free non-patterned phosphor films were obtained by optimizing the composition of the coating sol, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 70 nm and a thickness of 550 nm. Using micro-molding in capillaries technique, we obtained homogeneous and defects-free patterned gel and crystalline phosphor films with different stripe widths (5, 10, 20 and 50 mum). Significant shrinkage (50%) was observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped rare earth ions (A) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline Gd2O3 phosphor films due to an efficient energy transfer from Gd2O3 host to them. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the rare earth ions increased with increasing the annealing temperature from 500 to 900 degreesC, and the optimum concentrations for Eu3+, Dy3+, sm(3+), Er3+ were determined to be 5, 0.25, 1 and 1.5 mol% of Gd3+ in Gd2O3 films, respectively.

earth (Eu3+, Dy3+)-heteropolytungstate thin films were fabricated by self-assembly method successfully. The thin films give off strong fluorescence, which can be observed by eyes upon UV irradiation. The characteristic emission behaviors of the rare earth ions in self-assembled thin film were investigated compared with those of the corresponding solids. It is noticed that the intensity ratio between D-5(0) --> F-7(2) and D-5(0) --> F-7(1) of Eu3+ and the intensity ratio between F-4(9/2) --> H-6(13/2) and F-4(9/2) --> H-6(15/2) of Dy3+ in the self-assembled films are different from those of the corresponding solids. Furthermore, the self-assembled films present shorter fluorescence lifetimes than the corresponding solids. The reasons for these results have been discussed.

In situ synthesis of terbium carboxyl complexes in an organic-inorganic hybrid matrix by a sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of terbium carboxyl complexes in the hybrid matrix is confirmed by the luminescence spectra and IR spectra. It is observed that the location at the amino group in aminobenzoic acid has a large effect on the luminescence properties and lifetimes. Furthermore, the emission intensity decreases with increasing temperature.

Novel soluble rare earth aromatic carboxylates were prepared. The triplet energy level of organic ligand was measured. The photoluminescence properties of the Tb3+ and EU3+ aromatic carboxylates and lifetimes were investigated, which indicated that these rare earth complexes have high quantum efficiency. Because of their excellent solubility, polymer-doping rare earth carboxylates were fabricated as thin Films by spin-coating method and their luminescence properties were studied. Some rare earth organic light-emitting diodes were successfully fabricated which performed high pure color. The maximum luminance of the device of ITO/PVK/PVK :Th (AS)(3)Phen: PBD/PBD/Al is 32 cd(.)m(-2) at 28 V.

By using metal nitrates as starting materials and citric acid as complexing agent, Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and Y3Al5O12:Eu (1 mol%) (YAG:Eu) powder phosphors were prepared by a citrate-gel method. The formation process of YAG and YAG:Eu were investigated by means of XRD, TG-DTA and FT-IR spectra. The purified crystalline phases of YAG and YAG:Eu were obtained at 800 degreesC. The crystalline YAG:Eu phosphors showed an orange-red emission with D-5(0)-F-7(1) (591 nm) as the most prominent group, whose intensity was dependent on the pH value of the starting solution, citric acid content and firing temperature. It has been found that the suitable pH and citric acid/metal ratio are 3 and 2 for obtaining the highest emission intensity, respectively. The emission intensity increases steadily with increasing the annealing temperature from 800 to 1200 degreesC, and nearly remains constant after 1200 degreesC. Furthermore, great differences were observed for the lifetimes and the charge transfer band of Eu3+ in crystalline and amorphous states of YAG.

Nanocrystalline YVO4:A (A = Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a Pechini sol-gel process combined with soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopy, UV/vis transmission and absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 400 degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the increase of annealing temperatures. Transparent nonpatterned phosphor films were uniform and crack-free, which mainly consisted of grains with an average size of 90 nm. Patterned gel and crystalline phosphor film bands with different widths (5-60 mum) were obtained. Significant shrinkage and a few defects were observed in the patterned films during the heat treatment process. The doped rare earth ions (A) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline YVO4 phosphor films because of an efficient energy transfer from vanadate groups to them. The Sm3+ and Er3+ ions also showed upconversion luminescence in a YVO4 film host. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the rare earth ions increased with increasing annealing temperature from 400 to 800 degreesC, and the optimum concentration for Eu3+ was determined to be 7 mol % and those for Dy3+, Sm3-, and Er3+ were 2 Mol % of Y3- in YVO4 films, respectively.

RE3+ (Eu3+, Tb3+) complexes with carboxylic acid (salicylic acid and benzoic acid) were introduced into the sol, which was prepared by the hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). A sol-gel luminescent thin film (SG-LTF) was then prepared by dispersing the sol onto a silica substrate by a spin coating method. Multi-layer luminescent thin films were prepared by repeating the same process. The luminescent spectra, fluorescence lifetime and thermal stability of the SG-LTFs were investigated. For the reason of comparison polyvinylbutyral (PVB) was added into a N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution in which the comparative RE3+ carboxylic acid complexes were previously dissolved to form the DMF/PVB solution and the PVB luminescent thin film (PVB-LTF) was prepared. The results show that a broad excitation band indicates the formation of RE complexes in the solid SG-LTFs. RE ions, which are restrained in the silica matrix, present longer lifetimes and higher thermal stability than that in the PVB-LTF containing the corresponding pure complexes. The different doping concentration of RE (III) complexes in the SG-LTFs and the different change of the emission intensities with the heat treatment temperature in the sol-gel thin film and the sol-gel bulk gel were also discussed in this paper.

Rare earth complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1.10-phenanthroline) hits been incorporated into unmodified MCM-41 and modified MCM-41s by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or N-[(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine(TEPED). Thus, the assemblies of unmodified or modified MCM-41s with rare earth (RE) complex have been obtained. XRD spectra. NMR spectra. diffuse reflectance spectra. and the luminescence spectra were used to characterize the pure RE complex and the corresponding assemblies. The assemblies have better luminescence properties under UV irradiation. and their fluorescence lifetimes on the excited state are longer than that of the corresponding pure complex. The possible mechanisms are also discussed in the context.

Two kinds of rare earth (RE) complexes were intercalated into zirconium bis(monohydrogenphosphate) (alpha -ZrP) by exchanging the RE complexes into the p-methyoxyaniline (PMA) preintercalated compound Zr(O3POH)(2). 2PMA (alpha -ZrP . 2PMA). Powder X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) and Tb(AA)(3)phen (AA: acetylacetone) intercalated into alpha -ZrP . 2PMA. This was confirmed by the UV-visible spectra of both the RE complexes and the assemblies. At the same time, the assemblies have better luminescent properties, and the fluorescent lifetimes of RE3+ in the excited state in the assemblies are much longer than those in the complexes. The stabilities of the assemblies under UV radiation are much better than those of the RE complexes.

Terbium complexes with benzoic acid and its derivatives o-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were in situ synthesized in sol-gel derived silica matrix via a two-step sol-gel process. The formation process of the complex was characterized by fluorescence spectra, absorption spectra and IR spectra. The gels that contain in situ synthesized complexes exhibit the characteristic emission bands of terbium ion. The fluorescence lifetimes of Tb3+ in the silica gels are longer than those in the pure complexes and in the solutions that contain the corresponding complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)(3)Phen, Tb(Sal)(3)) were prepared via the sol-gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic-inorganic semiinterpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA-SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper described a laser-excited time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay set. It made lanthanide ion to couple the anhydrde of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPAA) for labeling antibodies. The experiment used polystyrene tap coated with HCV antigen as the solid phase and a chelate of the rare earth metal europium as fluorescent label. A nitrogen laser beam was used to excite the Eu3+ chelates and after 60 ys delay time, the emission fluorescence was measured. Background fluorescence of short lifetimes caused by serum components and Raman scattering can be eliminated by set the delay rime. In the system condition, fluorescent spectra and fluorescent lifetimes of Eu3+ beta-naphthoyltrifluroacetone (NTA) chelates were measured. The fluorescent lifetime value is 650 mu s. The maximum emssion wavelength is 613 nm. The linear range of europium ion concentration is 1 x 10(-7)- 1 x 10(-11) g.mL(-1) and the detection limit is 1 x 10(-13) g.mL(-1). The relative standard deviation of determination ( n = 12) for samples at 0.01 ng.mL(-1) magnitude is 6.4%. Laser-TRFIA was also found to be suitable for diagnosis of HCV. The sensitvity and specificity were comparable to enzyme immunoassay. The result was obtained with laser-TRFIA for 29 human correlated well with enzyme immunoassay.
