Doubly charged ion mass spectra of alkyl-substituted furans and pyrroles were obtained using a double-focusing magnetic mass spectrometer operated at 3.2 kV accelerating voltage. Molecular ions were the dominant species found in doubly charged spectra of lower molecular weight heterocydic compounds, whereas the spectra of the higher weight homologues were typified by abundant fragment ions from extensive decomposition. Measured doubly charged ionization and appearance energies ranged from 22.8 to 47.9 eV. Ionization energies were correlated with values calculated using self-consistent field–molecular orbital techniques. A multichannel diabatic curve-crossing model was developed to investigate the fundamental organic ion reactions responsible for development of doubly charged ion mass spectra. Probabilities for Landau–Zener type transitions between reactant and product curves were determined and used in the collision model to predict charge-transfer cross-sections, which compared favorably with experimental cross-sections obtained using time-of-flight techniques.

In this study, we demonstrate the power of applying complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray technology to identifying candidate loci that exhibit subtle differences in expression levels associated with a complex trait in natural populations of a nonmodel organism. Using a highly replicated experimental design involving 180 cDNA microarray experiments, we measured gene-expression levels from 1098 transcript probes in 90 individuals originating from six brown trout (Salmo trutta) and one Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population, which follow either a migratory or a sedentary life history. We identified several candidate genes associated with preparatory adaptations to different life histories in salmonids, including genes encoding for transaldolase 1, constitutive heat-shock protein HSC70-1 and endozepine. Some of these genes clustered into functional groups, providing insight into the physiological pathways potentially involved in the expression of life-history related phenotypic differences. Such differences included the down-regulation of genes involved in the respiratory system of future migratory individuals. In addition, we used linear discriminant analysis to identify a set of 12 genes that correctly classified immature individuals as migratory or sedentary with high accuracy. Using the expression levels of these 12 genes, 17 out of 18 individuals used for cross-validation were correctly assigned to their respective life-history phenotype. Finally, we found various candidate genes associated with physiological changes that are likely to be involved in preadaptations to seawater in anadromous populations of the genus Salmo, one of which was identified to encode for nucleophosmin 1. Our findings thus provide new molecular insights into salmonid life-history variation, opening new perspectives in the study of this complex trait.

This study presents the first consolidation of palaeoclimate proxy records from multiple archives to develop statistical rainfall reconstructions for southern Africa covering the last two centuries. State-of-the-art ensemble reconstructions reveal multi-decadal rainfall variability in the summer and winter rainfall zones. A decrease in precipitation amount over time is identified in the summer rainfall zone. No significant change in precipitation amount occurred in the winter rainfall zone, but rainfall variability has increased over time. Generally synchronous rainfall fluctuations between the two zones are identified on decadal scales, with common wet (dry) periods reconstructed around 1890 (1930). A strong relationship between seasonal rainfall and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the surrounding oceans is confirmed. Coherence among decadal-scale fluctuations of southern African rainfall, regional SST, SSTs in the Pacific Ocean and rainfall in south-eastern Australia suggest SST-rainfall teleconnections across the southern hemisphere. Temporal breakdowns of the SST-rainfall relationship in the southern African regions and the connection between the two rainfall zones are observed, for example during the 1950s. Our results confirm the complex interplay between large-scale teleconnections, regional SSTs and local effects in modulating multi-decadal southern African rainfall variability over long timescales.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 126, we recovered three expanded Pleistocene sections from the active backarc rift (Sumisu Rift) and three expanded Oligocene-Miocene sections from the forearc basin of the Izu-Bonin volcanic island arc. Quantitative analysis of the Pleistocene nannofossils revealed five major assemblages between 0 and LO Ma: Assemblage 1 (Holocene-0.085 Ma) contains dominant Emiliania huxleyi; Assemblage 2 (ca. 0.085-0.275 Ma) contains dominant small Gephyrocapsa and common E. huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica; Assemblage 3 (ca. 0.275-0.6 Ma) contains dominant Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica; Assemblage 4 (ca. 0.6-0.9 Ma) contains a peak abundance of small Gephyrocapsa in the middle part, and dominant occurrences of two types of G. caribbeanica in the lower and upper parts; and Assemblage 5 (ca. 0.9-1.0 Ma) contains dominant small Gephyrocapsa and common G. caribbeanica and Reticulofenestra asanoi. These assemblages are largely synchronous with similar assemblages recognized from tropical and subtropical regions, and can be used for finer subdivision of the Pleistocene than that based on standard Pleistocene nannofossil datums. The Oligocene-Miocene sections contain several hiatuses: up to 3 m.y. may be missing from the uppermost Oligocene (Zone CP19) at Sites 792 and 793; all of Zone CN2 is missing at Sites 792 and 793; part of Zone CN3 and all of Zone CN4 are missing at Site 792. Biochronology of several nannofossil datums at Leg 126 sites indicate that Sphenolithus distentus, Sphenolithus ciperoensis, Cyclicargolithus floridanus, and Discoaster kugleri have diachronous occurrences compared with other sites in the western Pacific Ocean and Philippine Sea.
