Along most of the U.S. east and gulf coasts from Long Island to the Mexican Border, bottom profiles extending over the Inner Continental Shelves normal from the coast display a characteristic two-sector shape. Near the coast, the 'shoreface' profile sector is steep and concave-up; the seaward 'ramp' sector is planar with a gradual slope away from the coast. As part of the Beach Evaluation Program at this Center, 9 profiles extending from the coast 30.5 km (19 miles) seaward at each of 49 localities were averaged to mathematically characterize the profiles and to develop and test criteria for discriminating among groups of profiles. Results indicate Inner Continental Shelf profiles can be mathematically defined by 4 parameters: a = ramp slope (0 - 0.00107); b = depth of the ramp at the shoreline, when the ramp is extended as a straight line below the shoreface sector (0 - 24.7 meters, 0 - 81 feet); c = distance from the shoreline to the shoreface-ramp boundary (0.2 - 20.6 km, 0.12 - 12.9 miles); and f = index of concavity of the shoreface sector (0.21 - 1.72). Values in parentheses are the range of values obtained for the 49 averaged profiles. An equation was developed to define bottom depth as a function of distance from shore incorporating these four parameters. Computed depths using the equation were found to be generally within 5% of actual profile depths. In most cases, no relationship was found between the geometric characteristics of the shoreface and the ramp.

The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of catheter-drawn and peripheral blood cultures. Paired blood culture samples collected over a 44-month period from a 280 bed Brisbane metropolitan hospital were analysed, using standard clinical and microbiological criteria, to determine whether blood culture isolates represented true bacteraemias or contamination. Catheter-collected cultures had a specificity of 85% compared with 97% for peripheral cultures. In only two instances (0.2%) was the diagnosis of clinically significant bacteraemia made on the basis of catheter culture alone. This study concluded that catheter-collected samples are not a good test for true bacteraemia, and that peripheral. cultures are more reliable when the results of the paired cultures are discordant. 1. Standard and high-performance anion-exchange-chromatographic techniques have been used to purify myo-[3H]inositol pentakisphosphates from various myo-[3H]inositol-prelabelled cells. Slime mould (Dictyostelium discoideum) contained 8 microM-myo-[3H]inositol 1,3,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate 16 microM-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,3,4,6-pentakisphosphate and 36 microM-D-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate [calculated intracellular concentrations; Stephens & Irvine (1990) Nature (London) 346 580-583]; germinating mung-bean (Phaseolus aureus) seedlings contained both D- and L-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate (which was characterized by 31P and two-dimensional proton n.m.r.) and D- and/or L-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,3,4,5-pentakisphosphate; HL60 cells contained myo-[3H]inositol 1,3,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate (in a 500-fold excess over the other species), myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,3,4,6-pentakisphosphate and D- and/or L-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate; and NG-115-401L-C3 cells contained myo-[3H]inositol 1,3,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate (in a 100-fold excess over the other species), D- and/or L-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,4,5,6-pentakisphosphate, myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,3,4,6-pentakisphosphate and D- and/or L-myo-[3H]inositol 1,2,3,4,5-pentakisphosphate. 2. Multiple soluble ATP-dependent myo-inositol pentakisphosphate kinase activities have been detected in slime mould, rat brain and germinating mung-bean seedling homogenates. In slime-mould cytosolic fractions, the three myo-inositol pentakisphosphates that were present in intact slime moulds could be phosphorylated to myo-[3H]inositol hexakisphosphate: the relative first-order rate constants for these reactions were, in the order listed above, 1:8:31 respectively (with first-order rate constants in the intact cell of 0.1, 0.8 and 3.1 s-1, assuming a cytosolic protein concentration of 50 mg/ml), and the Km values of the activities for their respective inositol phosphate substrates (in the presence of 5 mM-ATP) were 1.6 microM, 3.8 microM and 1.4 microM. At least two forms of myo-inositol pentakisphosphate kinase activity could be resolved from a slime-mould cytosolic fraction by both pharmacological and chromatographic criteria. Rat brain cytosol and a soluble fraction derived from germinating mung-bean seedlings could phosphorylate myo-inositol D/L-1,2,4,5,6-, D/L-1,2,3,4,5-, 1,2,3,4,6- and 1,3,4,5,6-pentakisphosphates to myo-inositol hexakisphosphate: the relative first-order rate constants were 57:27:77:1 respectively for brain cytosol (with first-order rate constants in the intact cell of 0.0041, 0.0019, 0.0056 and 0.000073 s-1 respectively, assuming a cytosolic protein concentration of 50 mg/ml) and 1:11:12:33 respectively for mung-bean cytosol (with first-order rate constants in a supernatant fraction with a protein concentration of 10 mg/ml of 0.0002, 0.0022, 0.0024 and 0.0066 s-1 respectively).

Purpose - Despite the increasing sophistication of new product development (NPD) research, the reliance on traditional approaches to studying NPD has left several areas in need of further research. The authors propose addressing some of these gaps, especially the limited focus on consumer brands, evaluation criteria used across different project-review points in the NPD process, and the distinction between "kills", "successes", and "failures". Moreover, they propose investigating how screening criteria change across project-review points, using real-time NPD projects. Design/methodology/approach - A postal survey generated 172 usable questionnaires from a sample of European, North American, Far Eastern and Australian consumer packaged-goods firms, providing data on 314 new product projects covering different development and post-commercialization review points. Findings - The results confirm that acceptance-rejection criteria vary through the NPD process. However, financial criteria dominate across all the project-review points. Initial screening is coarse, focusing predominantly on financial criteria. Fit with organizational, product, brand, promotional, and market requirements dominate in the detailed screen and pre-development evaluation points. At pre-launch, decision-makers focus on product, brand, and promotional criteria. Commercial fit, production synergies, and reliability of the firm's market intelligence are significant discriminators in the post-launch review. Moreover, the importance of marketing and channel issues makes the criteria for screening brands different from those of industrial markets. Originality/value - The study, although largely descriptive and involves a relatively small sample of consumer goods firms, offers new insights into NPD project evaluation behavior. Future, larger-scale investigations covering a broader spectrum of consumer product sectors are needed to validate our results and to explain the reasons behind managers' decisions. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Symbiotic design methods aim to take into account technical, social and organizational criteria simultaneously. Over the years, many symbiotic methods have been developed and applied in various countries. Nevertheless, the diagnosis that only technical criteria receive attention in the design of production systems, is still made repeatedly. Examples of symbiotic approaches are presented at three different levels: technical systems, organizations, and the process. From these, discussion points are generated concerning the character of the approaches, the importance of economic motives, the impact of national environments, the necessity of a guided design process, the use of symbiotic methods, and the roles of participants in the design process.
