Le taux de triacylglycerol (TAG) qui s`accumule dans le tissu adipeux depend de 2 mecanismes opposes : la lipogenese et la lipolyse. Nous avons montre anterieurement que le poids des lipides du tissu adipeux de l`epididyme (EPI) de meme que leur taux augmentent chez les rats en croissance soumis a une diete hypoproteique hyperglucidique (HPHG) pendant 15 jours. La presente etude a eu pour but d`examiner les voies impliquees dans la lipogenese et la lipolyse qui regulent l`accumulation des lipides dans le tissu. On a evalue in vivo la synthese de novo des acides gras, qui s`est revelee similaire chez les rats soumis a la diete HPHG ou a une diete temoin; toutefois, chez les rats soumis a la diete HPHG, une diminution de l`activite de la lipoproteine lipase dans le tissus adipeux de l`EPI a ete observee, ce qui laisse croire a une diminution de la capture des acides gras des lipoproteines circulantes. La diete HPHG n`a eu aucun effet sur la synthese du glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) par la glycolyse ou la glyceroneogenese. L`activite de la glycerokinase, c.-a-d. la phosphorylation du glycerol issu de l`hydrolyse du TAG endogene pour former le GP3, n`a pas ete modifiee non plus par la diete HPHG. A l`oppose, les adipocytes des rats HPHG stimules par la norepinephrine ont eu une plus faible reponse lipolytique, meme si le taux lipolytique basal des adipocytes a ete similaire chez les 2 groupes. Ainsi, les resultats donnent a penser que la diminution de l`activite lipolytique stimulee par la norepinephrine joue un role essentiel dans l`augmentation du TAG observee dans le tissu adipeux de l`EPI des animaux HPHG, probablement en perturbant le processus d`activation de la lipolyse.

Acetone is considered to be a substance that can disturb cellular oxidative status, being also associated with the production of glucose during its metabolization. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of chronic treatment with acetone in oxidative stress and metabolic parameters in rats. Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: control (CG) and chronic acetone group (CAG). After 28 days of acetone ingestion in a 5% aqueous solution (CAG) or water (CG) the animals were euthanized and urine, plasma and liver were collected for the determination of acetone, glucose, lipemia, hepatic fat, malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and vitamin E. As expected, urinary and plasma acetone levels were higher in CAG. There was no difference in hepatic MDA values between groups, whereas hepatic GSH was lower in CAG than in CG and hepatic vitamin E was higher in CAG than in CG. There was also an increase in glycemia, cholesterolemia and hepatic fat in CAG compared to CG. Chronic treatment with a 5% acetone solution produced an increase in acetonemia that was able to promote changes in hepatic oxidative metabolism and in lipid content in rats similar to those observed in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

In this work, we take advantage of association rule mining to support two types of medical systems: the Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems and the Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. For content-based retrieval, association rules are employed to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vectors that represent the images and to improve the precision of the similarity queries. We refer to the association rule-based method to improve CBIR systems proposed here as Feature selection through Association Rules (FAR). To improve CAD systems, we propose the Image Diagnosis Enhancement through Association rules (IDEA) method. Association rules are employed to suggest a second opinion to the radiologist or a preliminary diagnosis of a new image. A second opinion automatically obtained can either accelerate the process of diagnosing or to strengthen a hypothesis, increasing the probability of a prescribed treatment be successful. Two new algorithms are proposed to support the IDEA method: to pre-process low-level features and to propose a preliminary diagnosis based on association rules. We performed several experiments to validate the proposed methods. The results indicate that association rules can be successfully applied to improve CBIR and CAD systems, empowering the arsenal of techniques to support medical image analysis in medical systems. Although there is no consensus about the use of glucose and thiamine for the treatment of acute ethanol intoxication, this is a routine practice in many countries. Our objective was to determine the efficacy of this treatment and the changes it causes in the antioxidant status of the liver. Male Wistar rats were intoxicated with an ethanol dose of 5 g/kg and divided into three groups: ethanol (EtOH; untreated), EtOH+G (treated with glucose), and EtOH+B1 (treated with thiamine). Blood and urinary ethanol as well as hepatic malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione and vitamin E were determined in all animals. Blood alcohol levels did not differ between groups, although urinary excretion was about four times higher in the group treated with thiamine (EtOH+B1). The malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione and vitamin E values used here as parameters of the antioxidant system of the liver showed improvement for the thiamine-treated group (EtOH+B1). Treatment with glucose or thiamine was ineffective in reducing blood alcohol levels in rats with acute ethanol intoxication. However, the beneficial effect of thiamine as an antioxidant for ethanol metabolism was demonstrated. Further investigations are necessary to clarify the urinary excretion of ethanol reported here for the first time and the possibility of using thiamine as an antioxidant in situations of chronic alcohol use.

Background: Food portion size estimation involves a complex mental process that may influence food consumption evaluation. Knowing the variables that influence this process can improve the accuracy of dietary assessment. The present study aimed to evaluate the ability of nutrition students to estimate food portions in usual meals and relate food energy content with errors in food portion size estimation. Methods: Seventy-eight nutrition students, who had already studied food energy content, participated in this cross-sectional study on the estimation of food portions, organised into four meals. The participants estimated the quantity of each food, in grams or millilitres, with the food in view. Estimation errors were quantified, and their magnitude were evaluated. Estimated quantities (EQ) lower than 90% and higher than 110% of the weighed quantity (WQ) were considered to represent underestimation and overestimation, respectively. Correlation between food energy content and error on estimation was analysed by the Spearman correlation, and comparison between the mean EQ and WQ was accomplished by means of the Wilcoxon signed rank test (P < 0.05). Results: A low percentage of estimates (18.5%) were considered accurate (+/- 10% of the actual weight). The most frequently underestimated food items were cauliflower, lettuce, apple and papaya; the most often overestimated items were milk, margarine and sugar. A significant positive correlation between food energy density and estimation was found (r = 0.8166; P = 0.0002). Conclusions: The results obtained in the present study revealed a low percentage of acceptable estimations of food portion size by nutrition students, with trends toward overestimation of high-energy food items and underestimation of low-energy items.

To identify genes differentially expressed in a strain of the mold Aspergillus nidulans carrying a loss-of-function mutation in palA, a gene in the pH-responsive signal transduction pathway, suppression subtractive hybridization was performed between RNA isolated from the biA1 and biA1 palA1 strains grown under limiting inorganic phosphate at pH 5.0. We have identified several genes upregulated in the biA1 palA1 mutant strain that play important roles in mitotic fidelity, stress responses, enzyme secretion, signal transduction mechanisms, development, genome stability, phosphate sensing, and transcriptional regulation among others. The upregulation of eight of these transcripts was also validated by Northern blot. Moreover, we show that a loss of function mutation in the palA gene drastically reduced the neutral sugar content of the acid phosphatase PacA secreted by the fungus A. nidulans grown at pH 5.0 compared with a control strain.

Purpose: To determine the influence of rate of polymerization, degree of conversion and volumetric shrinkage on stress development by varying the amount of photoinitiators in a model composite. Methods: Volumetric shrinkage (with a mercury dilatometer), degree of conversion, maximum rate of reaction (RP(max)) (with differential scanning calorimetry) and polymerization stress (with a controlled compliance device) were evaluated. Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (equal mass ratios) were mixed with a tertiary amine (EDMAB) and camphorqpinone, respectively, in three concentrations (wt%): high= 0.8/1.6; intermediate= 0.4/0.8 and low= 0.2/0.4. 80 wt% filler was added. Composites were photoactivated (400 mW/cm(2) x 40 seconds; radiant exposure=16J/cm(2)). A fourth experimental group was included in which the low concentration formulation was exposed for 80 seconds (32 J/cm(2)). Results: For the same radiant exposure, conversion, RP(max) and stress increased with photoinitiator concentration (P< 0.001). When the low concentration group exposed to 32 J/cm(2) was compared with the high and intermediate groups (exposed to 16 J/cm(2)), RPmax Still increased with the photoinitiator concentration between all levels (P< 0.001) but conversion and stress did not vary (P> 0.05). Shrinkage did not vary regardless of the photoinitiator concentration or radiant exposure. For the photoinitiator concentrations used in this study. Polymerization stress was influenced by conversion but not by rate of reaction. (Am J Dent 2009;22:206-210).

Objectives. To determine the stress corrosion susceptibility coefficient, n, of seven dental porcelains (A: Ceramco I; B: Ceramco-II; C: Ceramco-III; D: d.Sign; E: Cerabien; F: Vitadur-Alpha; and G: Ultropaline) after aging in air or artificial saliva, and correlate results with leucite content (LC). Methods. Bars were fired according to manufacturers` instructions and polished before induction of cracks by a Vickers indenter (19.6 N, 20 s). Four specimens were stored in air/room temperature, and three in saliva/37 degrees C. Five indentations were made per specimen and crack lengths measured at the following times: similar to 0; 1; 3; 10; 30; 100; 300; 1000 and 3000 h. The stress corrosion coefficient n was calculated by linear regression analysis after plotting crack length as a function of time, considering that the slope of the curve was (2/(3n + 2)]. Microstructural analysis was performed to determine LC. Results. LC of the porcelains were 22% (A and B); 6% (C); 15% (D); 0% (E and F); and 13% (G). Except for porcelains A and D, all materials showed a decrease in their n values when stored in artificial saliva. However, the decrease was more pronounced for porcelains B, F, and G. Ranking of materials varied according to storage media (in air, porcelain G showed higher n compared to A, while in saliva both showed similar coefficients). No correlation was found between n values and LC in air or saliva. Significance. Storage media influenced the n value obtained for most of the materials. This study evaluated the biomechanical and microscopic response of previously grafted bone to titanium implants. The lower incisors of 16 rabbits were surgically extracted, and bilateral perforations communicating with the remaining sockets were created distally. A socket/perforation defect on each mandible was chosen at random to be immediately filled with a xenogenic graft, whereas the contralateral perforation was left to heal naturally and served as a paired control. After 60 days, titanium implants were installed in the previously operated areas. After periods of 2 and 6 months, the animals were killed, and the force necessary to retrieve implants as well as the bone-implant contact (BIC) and bone mass (BM) were quantified and statistically compared by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey`s test (alpha = .05). No significant differences in removal torque were observed, either by time or by treatment condition. Differences in BIC and BM between experimental and control groups were not statistically significant through the intervals studied (P < .05). The presence of a xenogenic graft did not influence the microscopic tissue response to titanium implants or fixation into newly formed or mature bone.

it has been demonstrated that the effect of GH on bone tissue is reduced with aging. In this study we tested the hypothesis that the action of GH on osteoblastic cells is donor-age-dependent by investigating the effect of GH on the development of osteoblastic phenotype in cultures of cells from adolescents (13-16 years old), young adults (18-35 years old), and adults (36-49 years old). Osteoblastic cells derived from human alveolar bone were cultured with or without GH for periods of up to 21 days, and parameters of in vitro osteogenesis and gene expression of osteoblastic markers were evaluated. GH increased culture growth, collagen content and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in cultures from adolescents and young adults, whereas non-significant effect was observed in cultures from adults. While GH significantly increased the bone-like formation in cultures from adolescents, a slightly effect was observed in cultures from young adults and no alteration was detected in cultures from adults. Results from real-time PCR demonstrated that GH upregulated ALP, osteocalcin, type I collagen, and Cbfa1 mRNA levels in cultures from adolescents. In addition, cultures from young adults showed higher ALP mRNA expression and the expression of all evaluated genes was not affected by GH in cultures from adults. These results indicate that the GH effect on both in vitro osteogenesis and gene expression of osteoblastic markers is donor-age-dependent, being more pronounced on cultures from adolescents.

The Upper Newlands Seam in the northern Bowen Basin, Queensland, Australia consists of six benches (A-F) that have different petrographic assemblages. Benches C and E contain relatively abundant inertodetrinite and mineral matter, as well as anomalously high reflectance values; these characteristics support a largely allochthonous, detrital origin for the C and E benches. Fractures and cleats in the seam show a consistent orientation of northeast- southwest for face cleats, and a wide range of orientations for fractures. Cleat systems are well developed in bright bands, with poor continuity in the dull coal. Both maceral content and cleat character are suggested to influence gas drainage in the Upper Newlands Seam. A pronounced positive correlation between vitrinite abundance and gas desorption data suggests more efficient drainage from benches with abundant vitrinite. Conversely, inertinite-rich benches are suggested to have less efficient drainage, and possibly retain gas within pore spaces, which could increase the outburst potential of the coal.
