Carles Riba’s activity as a translator of Greek classics (Xenophon, Plutarch, Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus) and works of important authors who wrote in Latin (Virgil), English (Edgar A. Poe) and German (Rilke, Hölderlin) is well known and has been widely studied. In contrast, the great humanist’s translations of books of the Bible -Song of Songs and the Book of Ruth- from Hebrew to Catalan have never been the subject of a monographic study. This piece of work is an edition and a detailed analysis of his version of the Song of Solomon. The notes in the text point out the translator’s contributions and uncertainties in a work published at a pivotal time in the Catalan language’s history

Performance of small wind turbines: simulation of electricity supply to loads connected to the public or isolated grid

ABSTRACT The successful in the implementation of wind turbines depends on several factors, including: the wind resource at the installation site, the equipment used, project acquisition and operational costs. In this paper, the production of electricity from two small wind turbines was compared through simulation using the computer software HOMER - a national model of 6kW and an imported one of 5kW. The wind resources in three different cities were considered: Campinas (SP/BR), Cubatão (São Paulo/BR) and Roscoe (Texas/ USA). A wind power system connected to the grid and a wind isolated system - batteries were evaluated. The results showed that the energy cost ($/kWh) is strongly dependent on the windmill characteristics and local wind resource. Regarding the isolated wind system – batteries, the full supply guarantee to the simulated electrical load is only achieved with a battery bank with many units and high number of wind turbines, due to the intermittency of wind power.

Maalämpöpumpun ja aurinkosähköjärjestelmän yhteiskäyttö pientalon lämpimän käyttöveden tuotannossa

Tässä kandidaatintyössä tutkitaan maalämpöpumpun ja aurinkosähköjärjestelmän yhteis-käyttöä pientalon lämpimän käyttöveden tuotannossa. Tarkoituksena on tuottaa päivittäin tarvittava lämmin käyttövesi maalämpöpumpulla, jonka tarvitsema sähkö tuotetaan aurin-kosähköjärjestelmän avulla keskimäärin kello 12–15. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmän tuotto simuloidaan kuvitteelliselle Lappeenrannassa sijaitsevalle omakotitalolle Homer-ohjelmistolla. Maalämpöpumpun koko pidetään vakiona ja vertai-lussa on 4, 5 ja 6 kW:n kokoiset aurinkosähköjärjestelmät. Yli 5 kW:n aurinkosähköjärjestelmällä saadaan katettua talon peruskuorman lisäksi, myös maalämpöpumpun tarvitsema teho kyseisenä ajanjaksona. 4 kW:n aurinkosähköjärjestel-mällä ja maalämpöpumpulla saadaan tuotettua päivässä riittävästi energiaa neljän henkilön tarvitsemaan käyttöveteen, mutta tällöin maalämpöpumppua täytyy käyttää pidempi ajan-jakso, jos lämmitykseen halutaan käyttää vain tuotettua aurinkosähköä.

Aurinkovoimalaitoksen mitoittaminen suunnitteilla olevaan kerrostaloon

Aurinkopaneelien ja inverttereiden hinnat ovat laskeneet viime vuosina, joten au-rinkosähköstä on tullut kannattava sähköntuotantomuoto kiinteistöille. Tässä kandidaatintyössä kerrotaan, kuinka arvioida suunnitteilla olevan rakennuksen peruskuormaa aurinkopaneeleiden asennuksen näkökulmasta. Voimalaitoksen sijoituskohde sijaitsee Järvenpäässä. Kohteessa on 69 huoneistoa 8 kerroksessa ja yhteiset tilat 9. kerroksessa. Voimalaitoksen kannattavuutta tutkitaan simuloimalla tuotantoja ja arvioimalla kulutusta. Tuotantoja simuloidaan HOMER-ohjelmistolla. Rakennuksen kulutusta arvioidaan suunnittelijoilta saatujen tietojen perusteella, ja vanhempien samankaltaisten kohteiden kulutusten perusteella, jotka saadaan Nuuka-portaalista. Saaduista tuloksista huomataan, että nykyisillä sähkönhinnoilla aurinkopaneelit ovat kannattava investointi, vaikka sähköä tuotettaisiin hieman ylimääräistä, joten paneelit voidaan mitoittaa hieman kulutusta suuremmaksi. Takaisinmaksuaika on noin 20 vuotta. Tulokset ovat linjassa vanhempien tutkimusten kanssa. Tuloksista huomataan, myös että paneeleita jakamalla eri ilmansuuntiin saadaan tuotannon huipputeho pienemmäksi ja samalla tuotanto jakautumaan laajemmalle ajanjaksolle. Paneelien hintojen laskettua on kannattavaa asentaa paneeleja epäedullisempiin suuntiin, täten saadaan tuotantoa ajoitettua mahdollisesti paremmin kulutus-ta vastaavaksi. Mitoituksen voi tarkistaa rakennuksen valmistuttua, sillä raken-nuksesta tullaan mittaamaan paneeleiden tuottama sähkö ja kohteen kiinteistösähkönkulutus.

Melancolia e náusea: do destino enquanto fundamento do caráter trágico ao absurdo existencial

A partir da perspectiva intelectualista grega, na qual o dualismo entre corpo e alma requer o primado do discurso racional [lógos] em detrimento do páthos filosófico, busca-se com este artigo associar a noção de "desmedida" [hybris] com a noção de melancolia. Essa associação ganha ainda mais relevo, quando a aproximamos da interpretação de Simone Weil para o poema épico de Homero, a Ilíada. Se essa aproximação se justifica, então é patente a aproximação entre o caráter trágico que o destino adquire, na perspectiva clássica, e a noção de contingência enquanto fundamento do absurdo existencial, no pensamento existencialista.

Keskikokoisen maatilan biokaasu- ja aurinkosähköratkaisujen kannattavuus Etelä-Savossa

Tässä kandidaatintyössä perehdytään biokaasun syntyprosessiin ja sen hyödyntämismahdollisuuksiin, sekä vertaillaan biokaasun tuotannon määrää Suomessa ja Saksassa. Työssä tarkastellaan biokaasuvoimalan kannattavuutta keskikokoisen maatilan yhteydessä Etelä-Savossa ja käydään läpi biokaasuvoimalalle Suomessa myönnettäviä tukimuotoja. Tukimuotojen lisäksi käydään läpi erilaisia lupia ja hyväksyntöjä, joita maatilan yhteyteen rakennettava biokaasu-voimalaitos tarvitsee. Työn toisessa osassa käydään läpi aurinkoenergian hyödyntämismahdollisuuksia, aurinkosähköjärjestelmän komponentteja, sekä perehdytään aurinkopaneelin toimintaperiaatteeseen. Tarkastellaan biokaasuvoimalan lisäksi myös aurinkovoimalan kannattavuutta maatilan yhteydessä ja vertaillaan biokaasu- ja aurinkovoimalan ominaisuuksia keskenään. Lisäksi vertaillaan aurinkosähkön tuotantoa Suomessa ja Saksassa. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää biokaasu- ja aurinkosähkövoimalan kannattavuus esimerkkimaatilalla. Biokaasulaitoksen hinta-arvio saatiin vastauksena tarjouspyyntöön ja aurinkosähköjärjestelmän hinta arvioitiin kotimaisten toimittajien aurinkosähköpakettien hintojen avulla. Biokaasuvoimalan sähköntuottoennuste sekä huolto- ja käyttökustannukset perustuvat kirjallisuudesta saatuihin arvoihin. Aurinkovoimalan sähköntuottoennuste ja paneelien suuntauksen vaikutusta tuotantoon laskettiin PVGIS:n laskurilla sekä HOMER-ohjelmistolla. Kannattavuuslaskelmien perusteella kumpikaan voimalaitostyyppi ei tutkituilla voimalaitosten suuruuksilla ole kannattava 20 tai edes 30 vuoden pitoajalla esimerkkimaatilalla nykyisellä sähkönhinnalla ja tukitasolla. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmälle saadaan kuitenkin 20 vuoden takaisinmaksuaika, jos se hankitaan ilman lainarahaa. Tällöin voidaan ajatella, että laitos on kannattava. Biokaasulaitoksen kannattavuutta parantaisivat tukien ja sähkön hinnan nousun ohella kaasun ja lämmön myyntimahdollisuudet, joita esimerkkimaatilalla ei ole. Aurinkovoimalan kannattavuutta parantaisivat puolestaan tukien ja korkeamman sähkön hinnan lisäksi paremmin paneelien tuotantoa seuraava kulutus, jolloin pienempi osuus sähköstä päätyisi myyntiin.

Hurry up and slow down : education to close the ingenuity gap /

To explore the idea of education to close the ingenuity gap I use Thomas Homer-Dixon's work to define ingenuity. The notion that the supply of ingenuity to solve our technical and social problems is not keeping pace with the ingenuity required to solve those problems is called the ingenuity gap. Man-made technological developments are increasing the density, intensity, and pace of globalisation. People must reorganise decision-making organisations and problem-solving methods to pragmatically combat the growing ingenuity gap. John Dewey's work illustrates the fundamental attitudes for the thinking and judgment associated with educating for ingenuity. Howard Gardner's idea that truth, beauty, and morality ought to form the core values and tenets of the philosophy of educating for ingenuity is integral to this thesis. The act of teaching facilitates the invitation to the communication necessary to foster ingenuity. John Novak-discusses the five relationships of educational leadership that enhance an environment of ingenuity. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an existing model of global education, one that defines some of the school experiences and academic development of core values of educating for ingenuity. Expanding upon the structure of the IB and other research within this thesis, I speculate upon what my school, where educating for ingenuity so as to close the ingenuity gap is the goal, would be like.

Pigment orientation changes detected by low temperature linear dichroism spectroscopy: cold-hardening transition in phycobilisome-containing organisms

Low temperature (77K) linear dichroism spectroscopy was used to characterize pigment orientation changes accompanying the light state transition in the cyanobacterium, Synechococcus sp. pee 6301, and cold-hardening in winter rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Puma). Samples were oriented for spectroscopy using the gel squeezing method (Abdourakhmanov et aI., 1979) and brought to 77K in liquid nitrogen. The linear dichroism (LD) spectra of Synechococcus 6301 phycobilisome/thylakoid membrane fragments cross-linked in light state 1 and light state 2 with glutaraldehyde showed differences in both chlorophyll a and phycobilin orientation. A decrease in the relative amplitude of the 681nm chlorophyll a positive LD peak was observed in membrane fragments in state 2. Reorientation of the phycobilisome (PBS) during the transition to state 2 resulted in an increase in core allophycocyanin absorption parallel to the membrane, and a decrease in rod phycocyanin parallel absorption. This result supports the "spillover" and "PBS detachment" models of the light state transition in PBS-containing organisms, but not the "mobile PBS" model. A model was proposed for PBS reorientation upon transition to state 2, consisting of a tilt in the antenna complex with respect to the membrane plane. Linear dichroism spectra of PBS/thylakoid fragments from the red alga, Porphyridium cruentum, grown in green light (containing relatively more PSI) and red light (containing relatively more PSll) were compared to identify chlorophyll a absorption bands associated with each photosystem. Spectra from red light - grown samples had a larger positive LD signal on the short wavelength side of the 686nm chlorophyll a peak than those from green light - grown fragments. These results support the identification of the difference in linear dichroism seen at 681nm in Synechococcus spectra as a reorientation of PSll chromophores. Linear dichroism spectra were taken of thylakoid membranes isolated from winter rye grown at 20°C (non-hardened) and 5°C (cold-hardened). Differences were seen in the orientation of chlorophyll b relative to chlorophyll a. An increase in parallel absorption was identified at the long-wavelength chlorophyll a absorption peak, along with a decrease in parallel absorption from chlorophyll b chromophores. The same changes in relative pigment orientation were seen in the LD of isolated hardened and non-hardened light-harvesting antenna complexes (LHCII). It was concluded that orientational differences in LHCII pigments were responsible for thylakoid LD differences. Changes in pigment orientation, along with differences observed in long-wavelength absorption and in the overall magnitude of LD in hardened and non-hardened complexes, could be explained by the higher LHCII monomer:oligomer ratio in hardened rye (Huner et ai., 1987) if differences in this ratio affect differential light scattering properties, or fluctuation of chromophore orientation in the isolated LHCII sample.

The Effects of Body Posture on Emotion Perception: A Developmental and Theoretical Analysis

Previously, studies investigating emotional face perception - regardless of whether they involved adults or children - presented participants with static photos of faces in isolation. In the natural world, faces are rarely encountered in isolation. In the few studies that have presented faces in context, the perception of emotional facial expressions is altered when paired with an incongruent context. For both adults and 8- year-old children, reaction times increase and accuracy decreases when facial expressions are presented in an incongruent context depicting a similar emotion (e.g., sad face on a fear body) compared to when presented in a congruent context (e.g., sad face on a sad body; Meeren, van Heijnsbergen, & de Gelder, 2005; Mondloch, 2012). This effect is called a congruency effect and does not exist for dissimilar emotions (e.g., happy and sad; Mondloch, 2012). Two models characterize similarity between emotional expressions differently; the emotional seed model bases similarity on physical features, whereas the dimensional model bases similarity on underlying dimensions of valence an . arousal. Study 1 investigated the emergence of an adult-like pattern of congruency effects in pre-school aged children. Using a child-friendly sorting task, we identified the youngest age at which children could accurately sort isolated facial expressions and body postures and then measured whether an incongruent context disrupted the perception of emotional facial expressions. Six-year-old children showed congruency effects for sad/fear but 4-year-old children did not for sad/happy. This pattern of congruency effects is consistent with both models and indicates that an adult-like pattern exists at the youngest age children can reliably sort emotional expressions in isolation. In Study 2, we compared the two models to determine their predictive abilities. The two models make different predictions about the size of congruency effects for three emotions: sad, anger, and fear. The emotional seed model predicts larger congruency effects when sad is paired with either anger or fear compared to when anger and fear are paired with each other. The dimensional model predicts larger congruency effects when anger and fear are paired together compared to when either is paired with sad. In both a speeded and unspeeded task the results failed to support either model, but the pattern of results indicated fearful bodies have a special effect. Fearful bodies reduced accuracy, increased reaction times more than any other posture, and shifted the pattern of errors. To determine whether the results were specific to bodies, we ran the reverse task to determine if faces could disrupt the perception of body postures. This experiment did not produce congruency effects, meaning faces do not influence the perception of body postures. In the final experiment, participants performed a flanker task to determine whether the effect of fearful bodies was specific to faces or whether fearful bodies would also produce a larger effect in an unrelated task in which faces were absent. Reaction times did not differ across trials, meaning fearful bodies' large effect is specific to situations with faces. Collectively, these studies provide novel insights, both developmentally and theoretically, into how emotional faces are perceived in context.

The 19th Century Tombstone Database Project Records, 1790-1890 (non-inclusive)

The 19th Century Tombstone Database project was funded by the program Federal Summer Youth Employment scheme in the summer of 1982 and led by Dr. David W. Rupp, a Professor at the Classics Department, Brock University. The main goal of the project was to collect information related to various cemeteries in Niagara region and burials that took place from 1790-1890. Data was collected and presented in the form of data summary forms of persons, tombstone sketches, photographs of tombstones, maps, and computer printouts. The materials created as a result of a research completed for the 19th Century Tombstone Database project are important as a number of the tombstones have been damaged or gone missing since the research was finished. Before Dr. Rupp retired from Brock University, he donated project materials to the Brock University Special Collections and Archives.

La querelle analogie-anomalie : Cratès de Mallos était-il anomaliste?

Ce mémoire portera sur un aspect négligé de la querelle analogie-anomalie, la position des soi-disant anomalistes. On s'appliquera en effet à confronter le portrait de l'anomaliste présenté par Varron dans son De Lingua Latina, qui passe souvent pour être Cratès de Mallos, à ce que nous connaissons du grammairien à travers les scholies homériques. En un premier temps seront résumés et analysés les livres 8 à 10 du De Lingua Latina, seul témoignage positif au sujet de la querelle. Au deuxième chapitre seront examinés puis rejetées les sources grecques que la critique moderne a jugées perninentes à la reconstruction de la querelle. Une attention particulière sera accordée à l'école empiriste, à laquelle on a voulu associer la supposée école anomaliste. L'attaque de la grammaire par Sextus Empiricus (Adversus Mathematicos I) sera aussi abordée en détail et ce traité antigrammatical sera mis en parallèle avec le livre 8 du De Lingua Latina. Au troisième chapitre la querelle sera enfin remise dans son contexte original, celui des éditions alexandrines et pergaméennes des auteurs classiques, en particulier Homère. Après une historique du développement de la diorthose (correction des manuscrits d'Homère) de Zénodote à Aristarque, un survol des leçons qui sont attribuées à Cratès montrera le désaccord entre les deux protagonistes de la querelle sur la pratique de l'analogie dans l'édition d'un nouveau texte de la poésie homérique. L'apparition d'anomalies grammaticales dans les leçons de Cratès s'explique par la théorie littéraire euphoniste dont il était partisan.

Le rôle de la Télémachie dans l’Odyssée d’Homère

Pour comprendre les différents rôles que joue la Télémachie dans l’Odyssée d’Homère, il faut explorer à fond le thème de l’identité. La structure de la Télémachie et les rôles accessoires qu’elle joue dans l’Odyssée contribuent à définir l’identité de Télémaque et celle d’Ulysse. À la fin du poème, même si Télémaque a intériorisé et accepté son origine filiale, son rôle social et l’identité qui y est associée sont laissés indéterminés au moment du retour de son père et en sont même la conséquence. Cela peut expliquer le manque de consensus chez les auteurs modernes en ce qui a trait au développement de Télémaque, ou à son statut social et héroïque (i.e. épithète, maturité, etc.). La Télémachie agit à titre d’élément déclencheur de l’initiation de Télémaque dans la vie héroïque mais le processus qui se poursuit, à la fin de l’Odyssée, y est laissé incomplet. L’étape finale, l’incorporation, durant laquelle la communauté reconnaît la nouvelle identité de Télémaque en tant que héros et adulte, prêt à assumer de plus grandes responsabilités, n’est pas présentée dans l’œuvre d’Homère.

Efectos de la reducción del nivel del Lago Chad sobre la Seguridad Regional (Nigeria, Níger, Chad y Camerún) durante el período de 2000-2010

El Lago Chad ha sido durante varias décadas, una fuente de supervivencia económica para millones de personas que habitan en cuatro Estados a saber; Nigeria, Níger, Chad y Camerún. No obstante, el cambio climático, el aumento acelerado de la población, la explotación insostenible y la mala regulación de los Estados ribereños han sido los principales factores que han dado lugar, en la última década, a la dramática reducción del nivel del Lago Chad. Teniendo en cuenta que los Estados aledaños al Lago, se encuentran inmersos en una Interdependencia Compleja, este nuevo contexto, ha tenido un impacto directo en la región, debido a que ha agravado otras variables económicas, sociales, ambientales y políticas, dejando un ambiente de inseguridad regional. De esta manera, la reducción de la Cuenca del Lago Chad representa una amenaza compartida que vincula estrechamente a Nigeria, Níger, Chad y Camerún, lo que permite vislumbrar la existencia de un Subcomplejo de Seguridad Regional.

Síntomas musculo esqueléticos en el personal asistencial de una IPS Materno Infantil de III nivel de atención en Bogotá

Introducción: Los dolores y las lesiones musculo esqueléticas que sufren los trabajadores en toda la industria, se han convertido en un problema de preocupación a nivel nacional e internacional. Objetivos: Caracterizar la presencia de sintomatología osteomuscular en el personal asistencial de una IPS Materno Infantil de tercer nivel de atención en la ciudad de Bogotá, mediante la aplicación de la encuesta Nórdica, identificando su relación con el área de trabajo en el cual se desempeñan. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal mediante la aplicación de la encuesta Nórdica a todo el personal asistencial diurno de una IPS Materno Infantil de III nivel de la ciudad de Bogotá que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Resultados: Del 100% de la población estudiada (n: 49), el 65,3% correspondían al género femenino y el 34.7% al masculino, la mayoría de la población laboraba menos de 12 horas. El área del cuerpo en la que manifestaron tener más sintomatología en los últimos 12 meses fue en espalda alta con una prevalencia de 46,9%. El área del cuerpo que más manifestaron les impedía trabajar en los últimos 12 meses fue en mano y muñeca derecha con una prevalencia del 6,1% y el área que manifestaron les impedía trabajar en los últimos 7 días fue en espalda alta con una prevalencia de 16,3%.
